The secrets of successful listening

"When people talk, listen completely." Those words of Ernest Hemingway might be a pretty good guiding principle for many managers, as might the saying by Zeno of Citium, a Greek philosopher, "We have two ears and one mouth, so we should listen more than we say."

Some firms use a technique known as a "listening circle".  In such a circle, only one person can talk about the issues they face at a time and there is no interruption. A study cited in the Harvard Business Review found that employees who had taken part in a listening circle then suffered less social anxiety and had fewer worries about work-related matters than those who did not.

Listening has been critical to the career of Richard Mullender, who was a hostage (人质) negotiator, dealing with everything from suicide (自杀) prevention to international crimes. He defines listening as "the identification, selection and comprehension of the key words".  Plenty of people think that good listening is about nodding your head or keeping eye contact. But that is not really listening, Mr Mullender argues.

A good listener is always looking for facts, emotions and indications of the speaker's values. Another important point to bear in mind is that, when you talk, you are not listening. The listener's focus should be on analysis.

One approach is to make an assessment of what the other person is telling you and then check it with them ("It seems to me that what you want is X").  The fundamental aim is to build up a relationship so the other person likes you and trusts you, Mr Mullender says.

A. It is vital to all effective communication.

B. However, a listener needs to speak occasionally.

C. For people like listening to others.

D. That gives the other party a sense that they are being understood.

E. Therefore, a listener shouldn't just listen.

F. In it participants are encouraged to talk openly and honestly.

G. For people like being listened to.

An inspiration for poets and authors, explorers and adventurers, the vast Arabian Desert is one of the most beautiful landscapes on the planet. It is hard not to be moved by its dramatic land or its seemingly endless sea of sand dunes (沙丘). However, limiting the physical movement of these natural desert wonders themselves is an almost impossible task.

Strong winds that blow up through these wide-open spaces sweep the surface, reshaping large sand dunes at will. In addition, running water from winter rains carves fresh patterns into the desert floor. The unique geography and constant flow of sand presents a set of challenges to the early settlements, particularly since many of them are situated in remote desert locations.

Fortunately, a discipline exists that traces its roots back to some of the earliest known civilizations, and which has also helped settlers there build safe, stable structures. Known as geotechnical engineering, it involves using geological knowledge to solve engineering problems and it is helping preserve desert operations through breakthroughs in sand and soil stabilization, without harming the natural environment.

Experts have piloted a new method of sand control that involves spraying chemicals onto sand around facilities where there is an absence of vegetation or biodiversity. Thus, a hard coat is created that prevents the sand from moving. This has proven so successful that it will cover a total of 700 square kilometers in the upcoming projects. The chemicals hold sand in place for between three to five years without influencing the environment, at which point another coat can be applied if required. We are now using predictive modeling and satellite imaging to determine the effectiveness of the approach, while trials have been scheduled to assess whether it can be applied to access roads und pipeline routes as well.

But as technology advances, so too must our approach to urban development. And as the science of materials progress, we can expect to see more examples of changing the way we connect with our surroundings.

  1. (1) What is the purpose of the first paragraph of the text?
A . To introduce the theme. B . To present the main idea. C . To show the beauty of desert. D . To emphasize an impossible task.
  2. (2) Which of the following makes it challenging to live in deserts?
A . Sand keeps flowing in a certain pattern. B . Deserts are remote and relatively uninhabited. C . Running water from winter rains is running out. D . Strong winds change the shape of sand dunes at will.
  3. (3) What do we know about the new method of sand control?
A . The chemicals con work for more than 5 years. B . Sand around the facilities is coated with vegetation C . A chemical coat is formed to stop the sand from flowing. D . The method has been applied to 700 square kilometers successfully.
  4. (4) What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A . Our way of life is changing faster than ever. B . Advances in materials are beyond our expectation. C . We are in the hope of setting examples of changing the world. D . The science of materials contributes to our relationship with nature.

"I like photography because it captures amazing things that you might not see again,"Timmy Walsh says.He takes pictures of flowers, sunsets and road signs. But those photos don't usually end up in a scrapbook(剪贴薄)or on his bedroom walls.

When Timmy is at a show,he greets each customer and talks about what he was thinking when he took his photos. And he always shares facts about lung cancer.Sometimes donations and sales are slow, but that doesn't bother him."It doesn't matter how much money we made because we just raised awareness,"he says.Timmy knows that finding a cure for lung cancer will take time and effort. So Timmy will keep doing his part by shooting and selling photos of the things he sees.

Until the 1980s, the American homeless population is mainly made up of older males. Today, homelessness strikes much younger part of society. In fact, a 25-city survey by the U. S. Conference of Mayors in 1987 found that families with children make up the fastest growing part of the homeless population. Many homeless children gather in inner cities; this transient(变化无常的) and frequently frightened student population creates additional problems — both legal and educational — for already overburdened urban school administrators and teachers.
Estimates of the number of homeless Americans range from 350,000 to three million. Likewise, estimates of the number of homeless school children vary radically. A U.S. Department of Education report, based on state estimates, states that there are 220,000 homeless school-age children, about a third of whom do not attend school on a regular basis. But the National Coalition for the Homeless estimates that there are at least two times as many homeless children, and that less than half of them attend school regularly.
One part of the homeless population that is particularly difficult to count consists of the “throwaway” youths who have been cast of their homes. The Elementary School Center in New York City estimates that there are 1.5 million of them, many of whom are not treated as children because they do not stay in family shelters and tend to live by themselves on the streets.
Federal law, the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act of 1987, includes a section that addresses the educational needs of homeless children. The educational provisions
(规定) of the McKinney Act are based on the belief that all homeless children have the right to a free, appropriate education.
53. It is implied in the first paragraph that ____.
 A. the writer himself is homeless, even in his eighties
 B. many older homeless residents are going on strike in 25 cities
 C. there is a serious shortage of academic facilities
 D. homeless children are denied the opportunity of receiving free education
54.The National Coalition for the homeless believes that the number of homeless children is _____.
 A. 350,000    B. 1,500,000       C. 440,000      D. 110,000
55 One part of the homeless population is difficult to estimate. The reason might well be ____.
 A. the homeless children are too young to be treated as children
 B. the homeless population is growing rapidly
 C. the homeless children usually stay outside school
 D. some homeless children are deserted by their families
56.The McKinney Act is mentioned in this passage in order to show that ___.
 A. the educational problems of homeless children are being recognized
 B. the estimates on homeless children are hard to determine
 C. the address of grade-school children should be located
 D. all homeless people should have free education

When I graduated from high school, I wanted to major in comparative literature. But, once I found out my friends were going into “real” majors, like marketing, nursing, and engineering, I figured I needed to do the same to ensure a good career. So I changed my mind and chose Business Management as my major. I forced myself to believe that I would enjoy it and succeed in the future, but eventually I exhausted myself understanding the economy and trying new marketing techniques. Coming out of this experience, I realize it is ok to be different from others and to study things like classcs, art history and other majors offered in the College of Humanities(人文学科)!
The worries most people have about a Humanitie degree and finding a career afterwards are that the majors are too abstract, and one will not obtain any applicable skills. Actually ideas discussed in Humanities classes, which are occasionally different from what people commonly believe, offer a broad perspective(视角). How could one effectively be an unbiased(无偏见的)writer with only a knowledge of the popular opinion of society? How could one speak persuasively ith closed minds? Only seeing the world through a single perspective leads to missed learning, missed friendships, and missed growth! With a broader perspective, we wl be more free, more open-minded, and less limited in what we can become!
STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) graduates learn actual skills in their studie, while humanities majors learn “soft skills” like communicating effectively through writing critically and speaking persuasively, synthesizing(综合)ideas through gathering and interpreting information, and developing cultural awareness. Do those soft skills sound useless and inapplicable to you? Think of it. How often do you communicate with others? Produce ideas? Encounter people from other cultures? Every day. Every SECOND of every day. So why not master these skills?
If you choose a major in the College of Humanities, you will be needed. The job market is quietly creating thousands of openings a week for people who can bring a humanist’s grace to our rapidly evolving high-tech future. Your skills will be valuable to any workplace you hope to be in. Chase after your dream major with all your energy, no matter what other people think.
