Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather's house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa's place.

This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather's village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.

Grandpa's house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door--one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.

One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed (辗转) and turned in bed.

Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung(附着)to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, "It's an earthquake! It's an earthquake!" They ran outside the house. They thought that would be safe.

Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, "The sea is rising! The sea is rising." The villagers started running away from the beach.

Sami watched dumbstruck (呆若木鸡).

The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, "How big the waves are!" He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.

Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago," You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near." He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging (汹涌) in.

Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.

Paragraph 1:

Grandpa held Sami's hand tightly but a huge wave separated them.

Paragraph 2:

"Sami, Sami!" Grandpa cried. "Don't be scared, little one, come to me, quickly."

Older adults with a better sense of smell may live longer than those who have a poor sense of smell, a new study suggests. The study was a project of researchers in the United States that was continuing for over 13 years. They asked nearly 2300 men and women to recognize 12 common smells. All the subjects were from 71 to 82 years of age. The researchers gave the adults marks, from 0 to 12, based on how many smells they recognize correctly.

During the years of follow-up research, over 1200 of the adults died. When the study was started, none of the adults were weak. They could walk about half a kilometre, climb 10 steps and independently complete daily activities. In the latest findings, the researchers noted those with a weak nose were 30% more likely to die than people with a good sense of smell. The findings were reported last month in the scientific publication Annals of Internal Medicine.

Honglei Chen, a doctor with Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, was the lead author of the report on the study. He said the connection between a poor sense of smell and an increased risk of dying was limited to adults who first reported good or excellent health. This suggests that a poor sense of smell is an early and sensitive sign of worsening health before it is recognizable in medical tests. With a poor sense of smell, people are more likely to die of brain and heart diseases, but not of cancer or breathing problems.

The results also suggest that a poor sense of smell may be an early warning of poor health in older age that goes beyond dementia (痴呆) or other neurodegenerative (神经变性的) diseases. These often signal the beginning of the weakening of the mind or body.

  1. (1) What do we know about the study in the passage?
A . All the adults were in their eighties. B . The adults were young and energetic. C . The study lasted for more than 13 years. D . The study involved international researchers.
  2. (2) What was the situation like at the beginning of the study?
A . Over 1200 of the adults passed away. B . One third of the adults had a poor sense of smell. C . Many of the adults were found with health problems. D . All the adults could perform daily activities independently.
  3. (3) What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A . People with a poor sense of smell have heart disease. B . Most older people may have breathing-related disease. C . People with a poor sense of smell won't suffer from cancer. D . Older people should be careful with their health if they smell poorly.
  4. (4) What is the meaning of the underlined word in Paragraph 1?
    A . 主题 B . 科目 C . 实验对象 D . 绘画或拍摄题材

Dear Ralph,

I'm a newcomer here who comes of a small town. I describe myself as shy and quietly. Before my classmates, it seems always difficult for me to do things well as them. I'm sure they will laugh to me and see me as a fool. So I felt unhappy every day. Besides, I have few friends. I don't know that they treat me like this — they talk to each other very well in class, but after class we become stranger right away. I am trying to improve the situation and it doesn't seem to work. Can you tell me what I should do it?

Yours,

Li Hua

The family had just moved to Rhode Island, and the young woman was feeling a little sad on that Sunday in May. After all, it was Mother's Day-and 800 miles separated her from her parents in Ohio.

She had called her mother that morning to wish her a happy Mother's Day, and her mother had mentioned how colorful the yard was now that spring had arrived. As they talked, the younger woman could almost smell the fragrance (香味) of purple lilacs (紫丁香) hanging on the big bush outside her parents' back door. Later, when she mentioned to her husband how she missed those lilacs, he popped up from his chair. “I know where we can find all you want," he said.

So off they went, driving the country roads of northern Rhode Island on the kind of day only mid-may can produce: warm sunshine, unclouded blue skies and vibrant (充满生机的) newness of the green and growing all around.

Before they got halfway up the hill, the fragrance of the lilacs drifted down to them, and the kids started running. Soon, the mother began running, too, until she reached the top. With a smile, the young woman rushed up to the nearest bush and buried her face in the flowers, drinking in the fragrance and the memories it brought back. Carefully, she chose a sprig (小枝) here, another one there. Finally, though, they returned their car for the trip home. While the kids chattered and the man drove, the woman sat smiling, surrounded by her flowers, a faraway look in her eyes.

When they were within three miles for home, she suddenly shouted to her husband, “Stop the car. Stop right here!" The man slammed on the brakes (刹车). Before he could ask her why she wanted to stop, the woman was out of the car and hurrying up a nearby grassy slope (斜坡) with the lilacs still in her arms.

At the top of the hill was a nursing home and, because it was such a beautiful spring day, the patients were outdoors strolling with relatives or sitting on the porch. Among them was an elderly lady, sitting in her wheelchair alone, head bowed, her back to most of the others.

You may have heard that humans only use ten percent of their brain, and that if you could unlock the rest of your brainpower, you could do so much more. You could become a super genius, or acquire psychic powers like mind reading.

This "ten-percent myth" has inspired many references in the cultural imagination. In the 2014 movie Lucy, for example, a woman develops godlike powers thanks to drugs that release the previously inaccessible 90 percent of her brain.

Contrary to the ten-percent myth, however, scientists have shown that humans use their entire brain throughout each day.

Over the years, brain scientists have shown that different parts of the brain are responsible for specific functions, whether it's recognizing colors or problem solving. Contrary to the ten-percent myth, scientists have proven that every part of the brain is integral for our daily functioning.

Research has yet to find a brain area that is completely inactive. Even studies that measure activity at the level of single neurons(神经元) have not revealed any inactive areas of the brain.

Many brain imaging studies that measure brain activity when a person is doing a specific task show how different parts of the brain work together. For example, while you are reading this text on your smartphone, some parts of your brain, including those responsible for vision and reading comprehension, will be more active.

A more direct counter to the ten-percent myth lies in individuals who have suffered brain damage – like through a stroke(中风)– and what they can no longer do, or do as well, as a result of that damage. If the ten percent myth is true, then damage too many parts of our brain shouldn't affect your daily functioning. Studies have shown that damaging a very small part of the brain may have devastating consequences.

If someone experiences damage to Broca's area(布罗卡氏区), for example, they can understand language but can't speak fluently.

In one highly publicized case, a woman in Florida permanently lost her" capacity for thoughts, perceptions, memories, and emotions that are the very essence of being human" when a lack of oxygen destroyed half of her brain.

  1. (1) What is the passage mainly about?
A . The ten percent myth is not true. B . Brain scientists have a long way to go. C . Human brain is much more powerful than we imagine. D . All parts of the brain are equally important.
  2. (2) Why does the writer mention the movie "Lucy"?
A . To show the power of women. B . To introduce an interesting story. C . To fight against the ten percent myth. D . To show the influence of ten percent myth.
  3. (3) It can be inferred that Broca's area is responsible for ____.
    A . listening B . writing C . speaking D . reading

Today is Sunday. I've been in Canada for two months.

This is the first time that I've been away my family for such a long time. With the help of Katia, a roommate of me, I've soon got used to live without my parents around. Katia, like many other Russian girls are nice and lively. We became friends shortly after we meet each other. Although her English is a little hardly to understand, we enjoy chatting and we usually talk a lot about our own family. We're both surprised that Chinese culture or Russian culture are so different. Now, we are planning a small party for the next Sunday. There, Katia will introduce me to some of her friends, one of who has been to China several times. I just can't wait.
