Trees, plants and flowers are all around us and we enjoy their beauty every day. However, we are so used to them we may even take them for granted without (realize) how much inspiration they have given us. In fact, nature has inspired many of the most (fascinate) designs around us, including those in architecture. Nature (present) in various architectural designs.
Today, architects continue to explore ways (capture) the beauty of natural forms, to mimic the way nature works or even to make natural organisms part of a building. ArtScience Museum, Singapore was designed to show the (connect) between nature and the modern city environment in which it sits. Visitors are often amazed to find themselves in an urban building that so (true) captures the beauty of natural forms. Harare's Eastgate Centre is superb example of biomimicry (仿生学). To use biomimicry is to create structures (base) on natural forms and processes. Creating buildings such as these enables us to live closer harmony with our environment.
In the book The Best Little Girl in the World , Kessa has a serious eating disorder (进食障碍) called anorexia nervosa. But she is not alone. Many people have this eating disorder.
In the beginning of her story, Kessa is a normal 15-year-old girl. She is good at many things, especially dancing. She has danced for many years and loves it. One day her dance teacher tells her to continue eating right, but maybe lose a few pounds. Once Kessa hears this, she takes things too far. Instead of cutting down on snacks and junk food, she decides not to eat at all. She does not eat breakfast, lunch or dinner. She begins losing weight and becomes slimmer (更加苗条的) and slimmer. But she loses weight to a point where she is unhealthy.
As her poor eating habits continue, her parents start getting as much help as possible to cure their beautiful daughter. But it is just as hard for Kessa's parents to deal with her disorder as it is for her.
Every day she exercises to lose more pounds and plans what and when she will eat. Her parents try everything, but Kessa decides not to have any fat on her body. Kessa's doctor and parents finally take her to the hospital. She is now so thin that she can hardly walk. There, she is given good care.
In the rest of the book, Kessa goes through a lot of trouble in order to cure her eating disorder. This book, I think, can help to prevent people from doing this to themselves. It shows the trouble that people go through just to be slimmer, and all the terrible things they must experience to be cured. It is a book I think every teenager should read.
As you gaze across the rows of brightly colored fruits and vegetables in the grocery store, you may not be aware that the nutrient levels in these crops (decline) over the past 70 years.
Increasing evidence from scientific studies stows that many fruits, vegetables, and grains grown today carry (little) nutrition than those grown decades ago. This is especially important issue if more people switch to plant-based (diet), as experts nowadays are (high) recommending them for public health.
" Nutrient decline is going to leave our bodies with fewer components they need to increase defenses certain diseases — it's going to devalue food as preventive medicine, " says David, co-author with Anne Biklé of What Your Food Ate.
Scientists say the key reason lies in modern agricultural processes that increase crop yields damage soil health. They interrupt essential interactions between plants and soil fungi(真菌), reduces absorption of nutrients from the soil.
Experts say it's important to look at these declines in the right way and not let this news stop you from eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains (maintain) your health. But they hope the results will motivate more people to care about how their food (grow).

Early birds-people who feel most energetic in the morning-tend to make healthier food choices throughout the day than night owls(夜猫子) , according to a new study.
"Evening types had more irregular meal times," notes study author Mirkka Maukonen, studying human nutrition and obesity(肥胖) in Finland.
Her study focused on people's risk of heart disease and their eating habits. Participants described when and what they had eaten during the past two days.
Maukonen's team then looked at l,854 people's lifestyle. After analyzing the data, the researchers found that both morning and evening people consumed approximately the same number of calories over a whole day. However, night owls tended to eat their meals later than early birds. Before 10:00 am, night owls consumed less food than early birds. More of their calories came from sugar. After 8:00 pm, the night owls ate more sugar and fat. Meanwhile ,early birds ate more protein during both the morning and the evening hours.
"Night owls tend to be less healthy than early risers," notes Courtney Peterson who studies diet and meal timing. "They are more likely to get heart disease or cancer. The fact that night owls tend to eat more junk food probably plays a role," Peterson says. "Other factors(因素) also can ruin a night owl's health. Night owls generally sleep worse," says Peterson. "Poor sleep has been linked to unhealthy food choices. "
Peterson and Maukonen say night owls tend to have poor eating habits. But that doesn't necessarily mean that being a night owl makes a person a poor eater. It could be the reverse- eating poorly could affect people's sleep habits.
"The new findings should serve as a wake-up call to night owls. For them, the new results should encourage paying attention to healthier lifestyle choices," says Maukonen. 28. How did Maukonen do research about people's risk of heart disease?
Phone Soap: Charge and Clean Your Phone
You may charge your phone every day, but do you clean your phone as much? Whatever your hands touch, your phones touch. It has been discovered that some phones have 18 times more bacteria and viruses than any surface in a public restroom. So it probably won't surprise you that a 2011 University of London study found that one in six of our phones have bacteria and viruses on them—specifically, the bacteria called E. coli.
The research on bacteria and viruses led to the invention of Phone Soap. It is not actually liquid like dishwasher soap. It is a phone charger that uses the electromagnetic radiation (辐射) used in hospitals to kill 99.9 percent of bacteria and viruses, cleaning your phone while it charges.
“There are really certain types of bacteria and viruses that we should not be in touch with, and they are really on our phones,” says Wes Barnes, the Phone Soap co-founder. It all started while his cousin and co-founder, Dan LaPorte, was in his cancer research lab at college. “He realized he got the idea of getting rid of bacteria and viruses on the phones,” said Barnes. “In the lab they used UV-C light for destroying them. He realized this would be the fastest, most powerful way to kill any bacteria and viruses living on electronic machines.”
Phone Soap looks like a little metal suitcase. Your phone rests in to charge and get cleaned at the same time. Instead of plugging your phone into the wall, you'd plug it into the Phone Soap charger box. The process only takes a few minutes but, Barnes says, “The idea is that you can leave it in there overnight if you want to keep charging. Reflective paint keeps the light completely around the phone so it cleans the phone fully.”
The co-founders spent 2013 finding the right companies and they started shipping the product in late November. By last week's International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Phone Soap was all grown-up. Both co-founders have left their previous jobs and are selling Phone Soap nonstop. “We're shipping almost more than we can handle each day,” Barnes says. “It's been a great adventure.”
I had just begun my freelance(自由投稿的) writing career. I was determined to be published in Los Angeles Magazine. So I marched into the office of Los Angeles Magazine without an appointment and asked politely to see the editor! The receptionist said, "Nothing doing!"
I returned a week later. "May I see the editor or can I make an appointment?" I got the same response "No".
I must get in to see that editor. But how? The wonderful, crazy idea took form.
I went to the supermarket and as each friend or acquaintance stopped to study the grocery list, I approached. "Would you be interested in subscribing to Los Angeles Magazine and investing(投资) in my career as a freelance writer?" Two days at the market resulted in my gathering twenty-five checks made out to the magazine.
I was now armed. I once again marched into the magazine office. "You again," sighed the receptionist. I explained that I was delivering twenty-five new checks and trusted that the editor might be willing to see me. The receptionist walked back into the inner sanctum(内室) and I heard a booming laugh. He would see me! He was curious enough to want to meet me.
As I put the twenty-five checks and a typed list of subscriber addresses on his desk, the amazed editor said, "We assigned a political story to a writer who can't deliver. We need the article three days from now. If you can get an outline to us by Monday, you have yourself an assignment."
Armed with a camera and notepad(笔记本), I gathered information all day and wrote on Saturday and Sunday night. By Monday morning, everything was ready. Finally, at 5 p.m., the editor called. It was a go!
My friend had a chance to make a trip to Hong KongAugust 15, 2015. He had dreamed about (visit) it since his boyhood and it was the first time that he(be) there. The following was what he had seen.
Arriving there, he was (surprise) by its beautiful scenery and tall (building). As we all know, Hong Kong has the most skyscrapers in the world. Wherever he (go), he saw many smiling faces. People in Hong Kong were kind, generous, easy-going and ready to help others. Much to his surprise, he saw that people there always kept order in public places. Although a great number of people (be)waiting for the next train at the subway station, they were talking in such low voice as not to bother others.
Chinese and English are the official languages of Hong Kong. English is (wide) used in governments, markets, service centers and other fields.
Staying there for a week was a good experience for him, he would never forget.

Last year, around Labor Day, I read a "Happy Ad" in our local newspaper. There was a lady in a local nursing home, who was celebrating her 90th birthday and her family wanted everyone to know about it. It said that if you wanted to drop her a line, here was her address. So I did. I found a birthday card and dropped her a short note, wishing her a happy birthday.
A week or so later, someone knocked at my front door. I opened the door and found a middle-aged man standing on my doorstep. He introduced himself as the son of this woman to whom I had sent the card. He explained that he just wanted to drop by in person and thank me for sending such a nice card to his mom. Apparently, like many older folks, she did not receive much mail and was quite excited to receive mine. I just didn't know what to say. I told him it was my pleasure and that I hoped his mom had enjoyed her birthday.
That year, I did not send out any Christmas cards, except to this lovely old lady in the nursing home. I just told her that I was thinking about her and hoped that she had a nice holiday. I sent her a holiday card and also a couple of notes in between. I just thought she might like to have someone write to her, to get some mail. She passed away a couple of months ago. I never met this lady, but I did keep her and her family in my thoughts. I dropped them a line of sympathy. I hope that my few little notes were enough to brighten a couple of her days here on earth.
