China's future high-speed trains might be self-driving, with a top speed around 600 kilometer per hour and an adjustable interior and entertainment system with high-speed Internet, a senior engineer said on Monday.
Fuxing, which debuted first on the line connecting Beijing and Shanghai, has an operating speed of 350 km/h—the world's fastest. It now serves a dozen major cities, from Chengdu, Sichuan Province, to Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, according to the China Railway Corporation.
Chinese scientists are developing a new model of Fuxing that can adopt to different track widths and still run consistently at 400 km/h, Ding said, an officer of the corporation.
"These new trains can be used effectively in Russia or countries along the Belt and Road Initiative."
"The new model will enter service within five years, about the same period needed to create and launch the Fuxing. In the next 8 to 10 years, China will launch a high-speed bullet train that is suspended from a magnetic rail-nearly twice the speed of the one currently operating in Shanghai." he said.
Chinese engineers also are aiming to make future trains more comfortable, including adding more leg room in all carriages, stronger Internet signals and some high-class seats that might involve adjustable interior and entertainment systems, such as windows that can change color or serve as movie screens.
Artificial intelligence will be included in future trains, using equipment such as scanners that automatically check and deduct fees when passengers board and exit trains without having to deal with tickets.
Trains also will have advanced self-driving systems that can predict abnormal conditions and automatically check slow in case of emergencies. These systems will be finished within three years.
Now, China's high-speed railway network has extended about 25000 kilometers of track, which makes up about 60 percent of the world's total, according to the corporation.

He is quiet and shy. He likes to hide(隐藏) his eyes behind his hair. He doesn't smile very often. However, if you talk to him about music, he'll have a lot to say.
This is Jay Chou, the 24-year-old Taiwanese pop king(天王). His fans are so excited because he will sing songs in Beijing on September 12. Those songs are from his new album (唱片), “Ye Huimei”, and the album was released (发行) in July and was named after his mother.
Chou grew up just with his mother. He did not talk much and did badly in many school subjects.
His mother noticed the boy's special interest in music and sent him to learn piano when he was only three years old. He loved it and kept on practicing.
Chou is not very handsome. He does not speak clearly when he sings or talks. But the singer has huge crowds of fans. “He is really good at music. It makes him attractive(有魅力的) to me,” said Liu Jiajun, a Junior 2 student in No.101 Middle School in Beijing.
“He is true to himself. He never follows others,” said Zhang Yujie, a Junior 1 girl at Huaibei Middle School in Sihong, Jiangsu Province.
If you love chocolate, maybe you have eaten a bar of Cadbury's Bournville chocolate. But Bournville isn't just the name of an English chocolate bar. It's the name of a village which was built especially for workers at the Cadbury's chocolate factory.
George and Richard Cadbury took over the chocolate business from their father in 1861. A few years later, they moved the factory out of the centre of Birmingham, a city in the middle of England, to an area close to the railways and canals so that they could receive milk deliveries easily and send the finished products to stores across the country. More importantly, here, the air was much cleaner than in the city, and the Cadbury brothers thought it would be a much healthier place for their employees to work.
They named the site Bournville after a local river called “The Bourn” and “Ville”,the French word for town, was used because at the time, people thought French chocolate was the highest quality. The new factory opened in 1879. Close to it, they built a village where the factory workers could live. The Cadbury brothers thought their workers deserved to live and work in good conditions. In the factory, workers were given a fair wage, a pension and access to medical treatment. The village provided everything that workers needed including a shop,a school and a community centre where evening classes were held to train young members of the workforce.
The Cadbury brothers were among the first business owners to make sure that their workers had good standards of living. Soon, other British factory owners were copying their ideas by providing homes and communities for their workers designed with convenience and health in mind.
Today, over 25,000 people live in Bournville village. Over a hundred years since the first house here was built, the aims of its founders have still been carried out.
It was Christmas Day 1999. On CNN, talk show host Larry King was interviewing Stephen Hawking.
"What, professor, puzzled you the most?" King asked. "What do you think about the most?"
Hawking immediately replied, "Women."
It's a comfort that Hawking, one of the smartest men in the world, is puzzled by the opposite sex. But, that's not surprising, according to Satoshi Kanazawa. Bright people are no better than anyone else at making smart decisions about common things, he says. These include finding a mate, maintaining family relationships, raising children, finding the way home, and dealing with a variety of basic life needs.
That's because there are several kinds of formal "intelligence", Kanazawa argues. Being smart one way does not necessarily mean smart in another way. This view is sure to cause arguments among scientists who think about thinking. That is because it disagrees with the common view that general intelligence is a single thing. In that view, it is not, as Kanazawa and others say, a set of independent mental areas.
Kanazawa says that some kinds of intelligence developed slowly over time. Many people have heard about what is called "emotional intelligence". Now, psychologists(心理学家) have discovered several other types of intelligence. These include the ability to learn a language, find a mate, recognise faces, and locate oneself in a new environment.
But, is there proof to support the theory that intelligence comes in many forms?" Actually, there is quite a lot of proof, " Kanazawa says. "If there were only one type of intelligence, "he adds, "people with high IQs should be ‘smart' in every way. "
In one test, a psychologist took a group of subjects on a hike, walking into the forest. He then told them to find their way back. The high IQ people were no more likely to be able to find out where they were. In another experiment, a researcher asked people to find their way to a specific location in a computer maze(迷宫). Once again, high IQ did not give them any edge.

Christmas is approaching, but 20 children in Sandy Hook Elementary School in the US will never get to open their Christmas presents.
On Dec. 14, Adam Lanza, 20, killed his mother and then broke into a school in Newtown, Connecticut. He killed 20 students and six adults there before taking his own life.
The tragedy has stunned the people of Newtown, a quiet town of 27,000 residents northeast of New York.
The shooting has also shaken the country and the world. It has made the US think, once again, about gun control issues.
The US constitution(宪法) protects the right of its people to carry guns. Any US citizen over 21 without a criminal background or mental health problems can buy the weapons, which are sold in gun shops and even supermarkets in some states.
“As a result, Americans now carry around 270 million guns, making them the most heavily armed people in the world per capita (人均), “ CNN reported.
This has brought with it a lot of tragedies. UN data shows that the US has the highest per capita rate of gun-related killings among all developed countries, Americans are 20 times more likely to be killed by a gun than people from other developed countries.
Since 1982, there has been more than 61 shootings in the US, according to Mother Jones magazine. The worst incident happened at Virginia Tech in 2007, when 32 people were killed.
Although the US has gun control laws, some want them to be more restrictive, especially after the recent tragedy. But supporters of gun ownership, including the National Rifle Association, argue that the right to own guns has become part of American culture. Gun use can date back to the early days of colonization(殖民地时期), when European settlers used guns for self-defense and hunting.
Despite all this, US President Barack Obama has voiced his concerns and says that he wishes to make a change,
“ We can’t tolerate this any more. These tragedies must be ended. And to end them, we must change,” said Obama after the recent shooting.
32. How many people died in Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting?
A. 26. B. 27. C. 28. D. 32.
33.The underlined word “ stunned” in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to “ ”.
A. interested B. shocked C. annoyed D. amazed
34.What can we learn from the text?
A. In the US, citizens over 21 are all allowed to buy the weapons.
B. Americans are the most heavily armed people in the world.
C. Sandy Hook Elementary School is the worst shooting incident in the US history.
D. Americans face much bigger gun threat than people from other developed countries.
35. What’s Obama’s attitude toward gun control in the US according to the text?
A. It is unnecessary to make a change.
B. It should be more restrictive.
C. It goes against the traditional culture.
D. No students should be allowed to carry a gun any more.
This design is satisfactory. So you’ll have to try your best to better it.
A. nothing but B. anything but C. all but D. everything but
It was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers had lived in the same way for centuries.
Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog’s legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places.
This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was to catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the frogs and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dream didn’t last long.
The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and there seemed to be more insects around lately.
The villagers decided that they couldn’t just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides (杀虫剂) and medicines. Soon there was no money left.
Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn’t been useless. They had been doing an important job—eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading (传播) diseases.
Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning.
25. From Paragraph 1 we learn that the villagers __________.
A. worked very hard for centuries B. were poor but satisfied
C. dreamed of having a better life D. lived a different life from their forefathers
26. Why did the villagers agree to sell frogs?
A. The frogs made too much noise. B. They needed money to buy medicine.
C. They wanted to please the visitors. D. The frogs were easy money.
27. What might be the cause of the children’s sickness?
A. There were too many insects. B. The crops didn’t do well.
C. The visitors brought in diseases. D. There were too many frogs.
28. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Happiness comes from peaceful life in the country.
B. Health is more important than money.
C. The harmony (和谐) between man and nature is important.
D. Good old day will never be forgotten.
