Pop music is the name for different forms of popular, commercial (商业) music. It had its beginning in the USA and spread throughout the whole world during the 1950s and 1960s. It is widely liked by the young people. The best known early form of pop music was “rock' n' roll”; another was “blues”. A more recent development is “folk-rock”.
Pop music has taken the place of native music in many parts of the world; it has caused the number of people for jazz to become much smaller than it was in the 1950s and earlier, and it has now begun to rule musical stage productions. It's a big industry. Much pop music is without artistic value, but the work of some pop singers, e.g. the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the groups like Floyd and Crosby, Stills and Nash, is on a higher musical level. And there is still a great interest in it today. Pop music concerts and festivals take place all over the world.

According to a survey, in Washington, DC, only 69 percent of public school students graduate from high school on time. Many factors influence that low rate. One of the most important ones is whether the people around the students expect them to succeed.
So, for the past 40 years, a DC organization has stepped in to give around 10,000 students the support and positive environment they need to thrive. This organization, called Higher Achievement, provides students with a welcoming space, help with class work, and caring teachers. More than 95 percent of students who complete Higher Achievement graduate from high school on time.
Katherine Roboff is the group's executive director in the DC area. She gives several reasons for the group's success. One is timing. Higher Achievement does not work with students who are already in high school. It works with students in middle school. They start High Achievement at fifth or sixth grade-in the US, that is usually age 11 or 12.
Robolf says research shows that if students are doing well academically in eighth grade-around age 13-they will have a greater chance of graduating from high school and going to college. In other words, what happens in middle school has a huge effect. The years between ages 10 and 13 may affect a student's future more than anything that happens academically in high school.
Roboff explains that students participate in Higher Achievement after school and during the summer, when public schools take a break of about two months. High Achievement students do homework, have community meetings, and work one-on-one with a mentor (导师).
The purpose of the programme is to help them use those after school and summer hours to become better prepared academically and to develop their leadership skills and confidence so that by the time they get into eighth grade they are ready to get into some of the top high school."
Tips to Increase Your Productivity
Want to get more done in your day? Of course you do. The good news is that everyone can increase the amount of tasks they accomplish in a day. Here are some tips to help you have a more productive day.
Make a plan for your day. Make sure you know how you want your day to go in advance, even before you start. To work best, create the next day's plan the night before so that every morning you spend time performing, not planning.
Break large tasks down into bits accomplished easily. Do you have a large project that's just so big that you keep putting it off? Or maybe you're just unsure of where to begin, so you put it off. Therefore, you will feel a sense of accomplishment as you check the items of your list.
Always set your priorities (优先事项). Figure out what must be done, do that first and rank the rest of your work according to importance. If you don't get to the items at the end of your list, it won't be a big problem, and you can do them another time.
If you are the most productive in the morning, that's when you should hit it hard and do as much as you can. If you work better in the afternoon, take care of some things like emails in the morning and then accomplish the important projects in the afternoon. Keep on top of your work habits, and you'll be more productive.
A. Reward yourself if you are productive.
B. This can provide you a roadmap for the day.
C. Be aware of when you are the most productive.
D. It's tough to meet depressed people who are productive.
E. It's important to accomplish the most important tasks first.
F. A good way is to break the project down into more manageable ones.
G. To stay competitive in any industry, you need to improve your productivity.
One night recently, I was driving down a two-lane highway at about 60 miles an hour. A car approached from the opposite direction at about the same speed. As we passed each other, I caught the other driver’s eye for only a second. I wondered whether he might be thinking as I was. How dependent we were on each other at that moment. I was relying on him not to fall asleep, not to be put off by a phone conversation, not to cross over into my lane and bring my life to a sudden end. Though we had never spoken a word to each other,he relied on me in just the same way.
Multiplied a million times over, I believe that is the way the world works. At some level,we all depend on one another. Sometimes that dependence requires us simply not to do something like crossing over the double yellow line. And sometimes it requires us to act cooperatively, with friends or even with strangers.
As technology shrinks our world, the need increases for cooperative action among nations. In 2003, doctors in five nations were quickly organized to identify the SARS virus, which saved thousands of lives. The threat of international terrorism has shown itself to be a similar problem, one requiring team action by police and intelligence forces across the world. We must recognize that our fates are not ours alone to control.
In my own life, I’ve put great stock in personal responsibility. But, as time has passed, I’ve also come to believe that there are moments when one must rely upon the good faith and judgment of others. So, while each of us faces the case of driving alone down a dark road, what we must learn is that the approaching light may not be a threat, but a shared moment of trust.

A. Because the approaching car was very dangerous
B. Because they both drove their car at a terrific speed

30. The author considers it very important_____________
A. to drive with a company B. to have personal independence
C. to gain certain responsibility D. to share trust and cooperation
31. From the second paragraph we know the author drew the important lesson from_______
A. only one experience B. many similar experiences
C. a driver on a dark road D. many friends and strangers
32. What do the underlined words“put great stock in”in the last paragraph most probably mean?
A. to have little trust in B. to feel good about
C. to lose faith in D. to have belief in
I ______ to go to see my former class teacher, but it was raining cats and dogs that night.
A. have intended B. had intended
C. will intend D. was intended
You may have experienced the annoyance of being fined because of parking illegally or finding your car towed away(拖走)after leaving it parked somewhere for a couple of minutes. But now a high-tech car sticker that’s designed to be stuck to a car’s windscreen could help motorists avoid such a situation.
The TowStop sticker sends a text message to a driver when touched by a traffic policeman,to allow motorists to send a reply and give them time to move their cars immediately. Frankfurt-based IT consultant, Daniel Kalliontzis, came up with the idea and is raising money to put his £43sticker into production.
Car owners can put the sticker inside their car’s windscreen, having set it up with key information, such as their phone number. The slim design will include a sensor(传感器)that, when touched by a traffic policeman, will send a text message warning a driver of a possible fine. The driver could then type a reply for the policeman using a smartphone, which will appear on the sticker’s screen.
The smart sticker system will rely on the good will of traffic policemen and in a way, a German law. The law states: an officer has to choose the most efficient and inexpensive way for the car owner to remove the vehicle. It could be cheaper for the government to call the driver than to tow his car.
Mail Online asked the Department of Transport whether the sticker could be used in the UK in a similar way. A spokesman said, “In England there is no legal duty to warn the motorist before issuing the ticket. However, a policeman does have the discretion not to issue a ticket if he doesn’t think the situation is that bad or he just wants to issue a warning. ”
So far, Mr. Kalliontzis has raised just over£2,362of his£39,381goal. If he manages to raise the money, the stickers will be shipped in June 2015. But it appears that car owners using the smart system could get some unnecessary warning messages, because anyone could touch the smart sticker.
8. The author wrote the third paragraph to _______________.
A. explain how a smart car sticker works B. advise drivers to buy a car sticker
C. show the importance of a sensor D. tell drivers how to park a car
9. We may infer from the text that in Britain _______________.
A. car owners don’t have to worry about a parking ticket
B. smart car stickers wouldn’t work as well as in Germany
C. traffic policemen prefer to call a driver rather than tow his car
D. the Department of Transport thinks highly of smart car stickers
10.The underlined word “discretion” in Paragraph 5 can best be replaced by“____________”.
A. trouble B. pressure C. freedom D. opportunity
11. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Daniel Kalliontzis -a great inventor B. Environment-friendly car stickers
C. Parking systems in Europe D. End of the parking ticket
