Scientists and marine biologists(海洋生物学家) had something to celebrate last week when two lost humpback whales(座头鲸) returned to the Pacific Ocean. Delta and Dawn — a mother and a baby — had circled the Sacramento Bay area for two weeks before going back to the ocean.

"We all shouted loudly like 'Yay'!" said Jim Oswald, a spokesman for the Marine Mammal Center. "It's been really exciting."

The humpback whales were last spotted on May 29 near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. Scientists are sure that the whales swam into open water during the evening of May 29 or early the next morning, since there have been no further sightings of the whales. Even so, boats were sent out to look for them, just in case the whales made another wrong turn.

Officials spent two weeks trying to get the whales to turn back towards the ocean. Biologists played recordings of whale-feeding as well as unfamiliar sounds to try to make the whales head back to the Pacific Ocean.

However, Delta and Dawn gave scientists an unexpected chance to study humpback whales in the wild. Scientists were able to gather sound recordings and watch their behaviors. This is especially exciting because humpback whales are an endangered species. What's more, scientists don't usually have the chance to observe (观察) them in their natural habitat.

"All those things are very hard to get," said Oswald," So what we are doing is filling up the knowledge blank on humpback whales in the wild." Scientists should be able to use this information to help other lost whales in the future.

At school, I was in the top set for maths. My teachers recommended that I study economics and statistics as my A-level subjects, but I had my mind set on a life fulfilled by the arts.

In fact, I was a victim of a gender stereotype made stronger since birth, that men do science and maths and women do arts or languages. Computer science, technology and physics just did not figure in my teenage world view. Nobody popular in my school chose to study those subjects.

Reality struck hard when I began attending job interviews and interviewers would say: "It's great that you speak foreign languages, but what else do you do?" Nobody asked my friends who had studied science or technology those questions.

A survey recently showed that three of the best-paid jobs for women are in the technology sector. It's a sector that really can change the world. We must show girls that technology has an effect on every industry out there, from fashion to architecture to journalism. Anybody can learn to code and these days it's as important as reading and writing. I've realized that at university I'd achieved the wrong kind of literacy. Not being able to code limit your impact on the world far more than an ignorance of great literature.

Now I have a five-year-old daughter. I don't want her to blindly follow gender roles the way I did. I want her to know the fact that a science or technical degree will not limit her creativity but expand it and broaden her horizons far more than my arts background could. I'm exposing her to Minecraft and apps, which help improve analytical thinking and problem solving skills. I'm hoping that my daughter will discover and accept her potentials in science and want to change the world.

  1. (1) What does the underlined phrase "gender stereotype" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
    A . Personal learning style. B . Sex characteristic. C . Conventional sex concept. D . Profession difference.
  2. (2) According to the author, which may be the benefit of learning science?
    A . Increasing job possibility. B . Winning popularity. C . Improving language competence. D . Enriching imagination.
  3. (3) How did the author feel for her major choice?
    A . Satisfied. B . Active. C . Discouraged. D . Regretful.
  4. (4) What may be the best title for the text?
A . Art or Science, Either is OK B . Good Subjects, Good Future C . Girls, Choose More Wisely D . Catch Chances, Change the World

Bad news sells. If it bleeds,it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are "the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread amt monitored(监控)in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules.By tracking people's e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.

"The ‘if it bleeds 'rule works for mass media,"says Jonah Berger,a scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. "They want your eyeballs and don't care how you're feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don't want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer."

Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication—e-mails,Web posts and reviews,face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative, but that didn't necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility,Dr.Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times' website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the "most e-mailed" list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times' readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.

Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny,or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused(激发)one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad.The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared as Dr.Berger explains in his new book,"Contagious: Why Things Catch On."

  1. (1) What do the classic rules mentioned in the text apply to?
    A . News reports. B . Research papers. C . Private e-mails. D . Daily conversations.
  2. (2) What can we infer about people like Debbie Downer?
    A . They're socially inactive. B . They're good at telling stories. C . They're inconsiderate of others. D . They're careful with their words.
  3. (3) Which tended to be the mast e-mailed according to Dr.Berger's research?
    A . Sports news. B . Science articles. C . Personal accounts. D . Financial reviews.
  4. (4) What can be a suitable title for the text?
A . Sad Stories Travel Far and Wide B . Online News Attracts More People C . Reading Habits Change with the Times D . Good News Beats Bad on Social Networks

Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take the fact of friendship for granted, we often don't clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people,       __71___ .

Moreover, a great many relationships come under the general term “friendship”. In all cases, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of closeness between them and the reasons for their interest in each other change greatly.

At the beginning, much depends on how people meet, and on good first impressions. As we get to know people,      __72___ . Although these factors are not of the greatest importance, it is more difficult to have a good relationship with people when there is a big difference in age and background.

Smiles and soft voices also express friendliness, and it is because they may give the wrong signals that shy people often have difficulty making friends. A friendly look with a wrong facial expression can turn into an unfriendly stare, and nervousness may be wrongly understood as unfriendliness.

Some relationships are a result of argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have the same ideas and beliefs, the same opinions and interests. The more closely involved people become, the more they depend on each other. And     __74___    . Equally, friends have to learn to make allowances for each other, to put up with annoying habits, and to accept differences in opinions.
