Water is very important to living things. Without water there can be no life on the earth. All animals and plants need water. Man also needs water. We need water to drink, to cook our food and to clean ourselves. Water is needed in offices, factories and schools. Water is needed everywhere.
There is water in seas, rivers and lakes. Water is found almost everywhere. Even in the desert part of the world, there is some water in the air. You can't see or feel it when it is a part of the air. The water in the seas, rivers and lakes is a liquid, the water in the air is a gas, and we call it water vapor (蒸汽).
Clouds are made of water. They may be made of very small drops of water. They may also be made of snow crystals(结晶体). Snow crystals are very small crystals of ice. Ice is frozen water. It is a solid. There can be snow and ice everywhere in winter.
Water may be a solid or a liquid or a gas. When it is a solid, it may be as hard as a stone. When it is a liquid, you can drink it. When it is a gas, you can not see or feel it.
The Children's Groundwater Festival, first organized by the Groundwater Foundation 19 years ago, is celebrated every year in Nebraska, a state of the central United States in the Great Plains. After organizing the festival for 16 years, the foundation passed the program on to the local community of Grand Island, Nebraska. The festival is an annual event for fourth and fifth graders of Nebraska. It is an interesting and energetic day filled with handson education. Water magic, folk singers and musicians, storytellers, and bird shows add to the happy atmosphere during the festival. There are also some educational activities:
Gooey Garbage: Children build a landfill (废物填埋场) and learn how a properlybuilt landfill can protect groundwater.
Water Races: Children learn about water pollution by racing a drop of water through a model.
Well in a Cup: By building a small aquifer (蓄水层) in a cup, children learn about aquifers and drinking water wells.
Taster's Choice: Children drink different types of water, from tap water to bottled water. Then they are taught about the treatment process of each type of water.
There's No New Water: Students are taught to make a special glass container and learn about the water cycle.
The Children's Groundwater Festival not only has a great influence on Nebraska's people. So far, similar festivals have been held in nearly 40 American states, Mexico City, several provinces in Canada, and New Delhi, India. People everywhere are realizing the importance of educating young people to learn and care about groundwater.
For more information about this festival, remember to watch our program tomorrow evening. I'll be waiting for you.

(obvious), a good habit can help us to speed up to reach our destinations. As we can see, developing a good habit is so important that I would like to introduce one kind of good learning habits — keeping learning diary every day. We can start the habit by (write)a learning summary and remember to record something impressive and meaningful. Keep it in mind, . gradually we can gain this good learning habit and benefit from it.
What's (much), I find out that I still have some bad learning habits well. I can only concentrate on reading for a short time, and I will conquer this problem by spending more efforts on concentration practice.
I believe that through my efforts, I can gain good learning results by having good habits.
There is nothing like travel when it comes to gaining perspectives and exposing yourself to other cultures. Here is a list of books that transport readers to another time and place.
ITALY: Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter
This book is written by the popular author Jess Walter. It is a love story that begins on the Italian Coast in the early 60s and eventually appears on the screen in Hollywood. As the settings shift from Italy to Edinburgh to Los Angeles, you will find yourself longing to go as well.
SEATTLE: Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple
Maria Semple's first novel is not exactly a love story to Seattle, but if you read it, you just might want to come here to see if people are really as self-involved as the characters in her book. What really shines through is the strange storytelling and the laugh.
ENGLAND: Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel
You can't travel to Thomas Cromwell's England without a time machine, but reading Mantel's prize-winning novel is the next best thing. It will make you long to see the ancient buildings and green grass of the English countryside, much of which is still there.
NANTUCKER: Here's to Us Elin Hildebrand
Elin Hilderbrand has built a writing career about her hometown island of Nantucker. Her latest is Here's to Us, which, perhaps not surprisingly, is a great beach read that will spice up your vacation. You won't be able to put the page down and desire to get there.

Hacking isn't just for computers and smartphones, According to a study published last week in the journal Science, scientists have found a way to hack a plant's genes in order to make it use sunlight more quickly. Someday, the results could increase the amount of food produced around the world.
Photosynthesis(光合作用)is the word used to describe how plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make their own food. Scientists who conducted the new study say this is a very slow process. Plants use less than 1 percent of the energy available to therm. But by hacking a plant's genes, the scientists were able to increase the amount of leaf growth on plants between 14 and 20 percent.
"Specifically, scientists hacked the plant's protective system. Normally, this system is activated when a plant gets too much sunlight, "said scientist Krishna Niyogi, co-author of the study. When the plant senses the light, it gets rid of extra energy and creates more leaves. When the plant is in shade, the protective system is turned off, but the process is slow.
Stephen Long is the lead author of the study. He compared a plant's protective system to light-adjusting glasses. When a person wears the glasses outside during the day, the lenses(镜片)darken and lighten depending on how sunny it is. Plants do the same thing, he said. But in plants the adjustment can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. This makes it hard for plants to get the right amount of sunlight needed to create food.
The new study sped up the process. By changing the plant's genes, the protective system turned on and off more quickly than normal. As a result, leaf growth on the plants scientists used in the study increased. Leaf growth in two plants increased by 20 percent, while leaf growth on a third plant increased by 14 percent. Scientists conducted the study on tobacco plants. But they think the genetic changes will produce the same results in corn and rice.
The first foreign language I studied was French, and I learnt it at a secondary school between the ages of 11 and 18. It was a compulsory subject for the first three years and I (choose) to continue studying it afterwards because I enjoyed it, found it (interest) and was quite good at it. Outside class I practiced (listen) to the French language radio and reading French books.
Before going to university, I spent three months working on farm in southern France. This helped me become pretty fluent French and acquire a rich farming-related vocabulary.
My French has also been (help) on holiday on Morocco and Portugal. French (use) as a second language in Morocco and in other countries quite a few people speak French in places a lot of tourists visit.
In September 2009 I joined a couple of French conversation (group) in Bangor and I have been going to them ever since. It has resulted in my(improve) in my spoken French.
Now I can still speak French fluently and can also read it well, but my written French is not so good.
Meeting your family's nutritional needs may seem difficult considering today's busy lifestyle. But it doesn't have to 1. Even a new emphasis 2 more fruit and vegetables doesn't necessarily mean more preparation time if you 3 the convenience of canned food.
When you open a 4 of fruit or vegetables at home you have fresh packed nutritional produce at hand, with no man-made ingredients and no preservatives. And all the work has been 5 for you: the slicing, the peeling, even the cooking. Canned fruit and vegetables leave you the 6 to be creative. And with the variety of fruit and vegetables available these days, you can serve different combinations, create new dishes, and 7 new tastes to old recipes. Canned foods are good as well. A United States Department of Agriculture and National Nutritional Foods Association co-sponsored study shows canned vegetables to be just as 8 as fresh or frozen. Because canned vegetables are 9 within hours of being packed, they generally retain 70 to 90 percent of their nutrients.
Fruit and vegetables canning is as 10 as your grandmother "stores up" tomatoes and other things from the garden. Fresh produce is taken from the field at just the right time, 11 to the cannery, checked, washed, sealed, and sterilized. All this generally 12 in less than 24 hours to 13 the best quality and nutritional value without the need for any preservatives.
Use the liquids that vegetables are 14 in as a substitute for water in recipes to get that last drop of good nutrition.
Most major brands of canned fruit and vegetables include nutritional 15 and ingredient statements on their labels. This is especially important to those on calorie-conscious or restricted diets.

Emotions Affect Our Bodies
Sometimes people call each other“scaredy-cat”, but have you ever thought about this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense, and there are changes in the chemicals in its blood stream.
Although the cat doesn’t realize this, its body is getting ready for action.
If the danger continues, this animal will do one of the two things. It will defend itself or it will run away as fast as it can.
Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry, scared, or aroused by other emotions, our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.
Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face. If we give way to our feelings and let them take over, we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger—or hit somebody—and regretted it later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely or said you were in love, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut? It isn’t always wise to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it’s smarter always to hide our feelings? No! If you keep feelings of anger, sadness and bitterness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense. Physical illness can develop, and you can feel churned up inside. It can actually be bad for your health.
Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don’t just go away. It’s as if you bought some bananas and stuck them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you’d smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, chances are that you’d see little fruit flies hovering all over them. They’d be rotten.
You can try to treat emotions as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don’t exist, but they’ll still be around. And at last you will have to deal with them, just like those bananas.
