Recently, every morning and evening, many people gather to dance in our community square, where is designed to improve living quality. Although dancing helps to keep healthy, but the long-time dancing and loud noise causing by the loudspeaker really bring inconvenience. I couldn't rest or sleep well, which made me terrible upset. I felt such sleepy in class that I perform worse in study. To solve a problem, I communicated with the organizer and suggested that they should shorten the dance time and reduce the music noise. Only this way can they have fun and let others enjoy life. To their joy, they adopted my suggestion.
When things went wrong, Ittleby Fein always had something nice to say.
When Dad forgot about the pizza and it burned, Ittleby said, “Don't 1. It'll still taste good.” And he was 2. The pizza edges were dark, 3 the middle wasn't bad.
Ittleby looked on the 4 side. And everyone, except Hazel, 5 that about him.
Hazel was the 6 student in class. On her first day, Ittleby said, “Nice to meet you, Hazel. I think you'll like it here.” Hazel looked at him, “I 7 it.” Ittleby didn't know what to do. He'd never8 anyone like Hazel.
9 Mr. D. said they'd have recess (休息) inside 10 the rain, Hazel said, “Bad things come in threes. No outdoor recess is number one. What will the 11 thing be?
The class didn't have to 12 long to find out. Greta was carrying a box of paints during art class. She 13, and paint went flying. Hazel turned to Ittleby, “That was the second 14 thing. What will the third be?”
Ittleby didn't know what to say. Hazel seemed so 15 about the Rule of Three Bad Things.
Emma came to look at Ittleby's 16. She picked it up, not realizing she had paint on her fingers. Hazel pointed, “Ittleby's picture is ruined(破坏)! There's number three.” Emma looked 17. “I'm sorry, Ittleby.” “It's OK, Emma. If I add wings, the fingerprint(指纹) could look like butterflies,” said Ittleby.
So Ittleby added wings. 18 he said, “Everyone, let's make a field of butterflies.”
Everyone put a fingerprint on Ittleby's paper. Only Hazel didn't.
“Want to add one?” Ittleby asked her. Hazel thought about it, and she carefully added wings.
“It looks 19. I like it very much,” said Ittleby. Hazel 20, “You know, I don't really think there's a Rule of Three Bad Things.” Ittleby nodded, “Bad things happen. But good things happen, too. And sometimes, there are good things hiding where you don't expect them.”
When my friend Lesa was diagnosed(诊断) with cancer, another friend and I went to the hospital to spend some time with her. We bought her a small toy and named him Lemon-Aide. We gave Lemon-Aide to Lesa and told her he was to go with her to all of her treatments to remind her that we were thinking of her and caring about her even though we could not always be with her. When the treatments were completed, she said when someone else needed him she would pass him along.
A few months later, much to my surprise, it was me that she passed him to. Lemon-Aide went with me to all of my treatments.
One day while waiting for my doctor I decided we could market the idea to fight cancer. Lesa thought it was a great idea so we founded the organization that came to be known as Lemon-Aide's Friends, Inc. We designed our organization to remind people fighting cancer that there are people who love and care about them all the time. Today we have totally 5013 volunteers. The money raised is donated to cancer patients who do not have insurance. The physicians on our Board of Advisors determine how and where our money is donated.
Lemon-Aide is for men, women, and children of all ages and to date has been sent to 34 states and 33 countries to provide smiling support for people fighting cancer. When life gave us lemons we made Lemon-Aide, a soft smiling toy that represents love, support, and encouragement.

A ship was moving at night. There was thick fog all around and visibility was very poor. The ship lost its course and moved eastwards. The captain and the crew were vigilant(警戒的) and very alert as they were off course. Suddenly they saw a light at a distance. They watched it carefully and were alarmed as it was proceeding directly towards them. The captain was sure that it was another ship that had lost its course in the heavy fog. They sent a stern message to the other ship that was apparently approaching them rapidly, “Divert your course twenty five degrees to the north immediately or you will hit us.” The reply was quick and sharp. “We can not change our course. You must turn twenty five degrees to the south immediately•” The captain was furious. He shouted angrily, “This is the captain warning you. Change your course to the north. Avoid a collision.” The reply was frantic, “There is no way, captain. This is a lighthouse. Turn south and save yourselves.” The captain realized the danger and the gravity of the situation. He put away his ego and promptly turned the ship away from the shore in time and avoided a major accident by his timely action.
We would behave like the captain when we insist that others should change their course to suit our convenience. The situation may become explosive due to the stubbornness of the persons involved. Often a solution to a conflict is easy if one is ready to sacrifice his egotism(自负,自大).
Dale Carnegie, in his famous book entitled How to Win Friends and Influence People says that no one wins in an argument and that the best way to win an argument is to avoid it. A slight flexibility in our behavior may help to avoid serious arguments in life, especially in family life.
Let us remember that “anger” is only one letter short of “danger”. Robert Green Ingersoll said, “Anger blows out the lamp of the mind.” Benjamin Franklin said, “Whatever is begun in anger ends in shame.” Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burnt. There is no excuse for unjustified anger; it can bring about your downfall. Wait and be patient, and later you will be glad you did. If you can not control your anger, you are as helpless as a city without walls, open to attack.
Let us avoid angry arguments with others which increase the distance between the hearts, sometimes to such a great extent that a return to the former state of friendship becomes difficult or impossible.

To move visual technology into the future, sometimes it helps to make a little noise. Researchers have used sound waves to produce floating 3-D images, create a sense of touch and even supply a soundtrack.
Since the 1940s, scientists have toyed with the concept of acoustic levitation(声悬浮), the use of soundwave vibrations to trap tiny things in midair. The technology has gained greater capabilities in the past decade. Some researchers believe this improvement could lead to applications such as contributing to novel 3-D printing methods, or creating displays that would be visible from any angle without requiring a screen.
Other researchers have also worked on visual displays that use acoustic levitation. In addition to visuals, the system can also produce audible noise to give the display a soundtrack. And the ultrasound speakers can also concentrate vibrations in one spot so that a finger might feel a sense pushing back—a little like the object shown by the floating image is really there. Soundwaves create a 3-D display!
Display without a screen is remarkably useful. It means that everybody in the room can see the image—any angle, location—and that’s extremely helpful. As a communications system, such a display might one day allow users to chat with a 3-D projection(投影) of a person who can turn his or her head to follow as they move around a room.
The display will require a lot more work before you can install it in your living room, however. So far, this has been done in the research laboratory. We need to push it a little bit harder. We need to do more analysis to see if it would make sense to create a real display that people would have at home. The current system can only show simple graphics, such as a smiley face or figure eight, in real time.
Still, we are optimistic about the potential for this type of technology. If the system had only one speaker-covered surface instead of two, it could generate images that are bigger than the device itself. We can’t make a TV image that’s bigger than the TV—even a projector has to have a projection screen that’s bigger than the image itself. But with a volumetric(容积的) display, a small, portable device might produce a much larger picture. We can imagine, in the future, having volumetric displays in watches, for example, that create large images that just project out of your watch.

At 23, I was fresh out of graduate school and working in a nursing home, trying to decide my next path in life. My job involved wheeling residents(居民) to the community hall for activities. Elizabeth would wave from her darkened room but refuse to join the gatherings. Nearly blind, and requiring oxygen, she never left her bedside. I soon learned, though, that she loved books, and every day after work I would read to her.
In dim light we made our way through “King Lear,” “Henry IV,” “Jane Eyre,” the poems of Rupert Brooke.
Two golden hours might pass before I’d pack up to return to my apartment. Before I could leave she’d press my hand, saying, “Child — my literary child. You bring me such joy.” Elizabeth’s husband had died ten years earlier, and their only child, a daughter, was estranged(疏远) for what heartbreaking reason I never knew.
One day an old friend of hers visited and brought her some soup. Smiling broadly, Elizabeth squeezed my arm. “Tomorrow, child, we shall feast.”
The next evening I found Elizabeth’s bed empty. “I’m sorry,” the nurse whispered. She handed me a box and nodded. “She left everything to you.” At home, I unpacked it, finding two white sweaters, the dozen leather-bound books and, at the bottom, the can of soup.
That summer I decided my path. I returned to school to study literature(文学).
And for 26 years the soup has stayed in my kitchen. It’s remained unopened, but the memories are preserved.
