Founded in 1966, Seacamp, the first program dedicated to(致力 于)the education of youth in marine(海洋的)sciences, is the result of a cooperative effort of parents, scientists, businessmen and camp leaders. Preservation practices and a respect for the marine environment are the philosophy of the Seacamp.

Seacamp's tropical(热带的)marine location in the lower Florida Keys enables it to offer a truly unique marine science program. This program is the heart of Seacamp. Young scientists participate in a variety of courses under the guidance of academically trained marine science instructors and biologists. All science activities include studies in both the field and the laboratory. Each session, 140 to 160 campers come to Seacamp, mostly from the US, but also from across the world. There are about 30 international campers each summer from an average of twelve countries. Many Seacamp program graduates have gone on to careers as environmental educators and marine scientists.

One of Seacamp's unique aspects is that campers create their schedules. In addition to science classes, campers choose from a variety of programs to ensure that there is something interesting and exciting for everyone. Campers interested in journlism may work on the camp newspaper, SEASCOPE, which is published periodically during camp sessions. Arts activities are also included. Photography allows campers to take home memories of friends, wildlife, and underwater experiences.

Seacamp teaches the fun and skills of sailing. It's an excellent way for future marine scientists to become familiar with the winds, tides and currents that are of primary concern in oceanography. Basic Red Cross certification is offered to beginners in sailing. The Red Cross course in advanced lifesaving is taught at Seacamp. The course is designed to increase the campers' ability to recognize and avoid dangerous water conditions and practices and to use self-rescue skills to get out of dangerous situations.

Parents may bring campers by car to Big Pine Key. Counselors(顾问)also meet participants at the Miami International Airport on the opening day of camp and accompany them to Big Pine Key on a bus. The fee for roundtrip service is $ 90. To join the Seacamp adventure, interested campers should contact Seacamp for an application.

We love to talk about camp! For more information or to ask any questions you might have, please give our friendly staff call and we'll be glad to help!

A robot called Bina48 has successfully taken a course in the philosophy of love at Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU), in California.

According to course instructor William Barry, associate professor at NDNU, Bina48 is the world's first socially advanced robot to complete a college course, a feat he described as “remarkable.” The robot took part in class discussions, gave a presentation with a student partner and participated in a debate with students from another institution.

Before becoming a student, Bina48 appeared as a guest speaker in Barry's classes for several years. One day when addressing Barry, s class, Bina48 expressed a desire to go to college, a desire that Barry and his students enthusiastically supported. Rather than enroll Bina48 in his Robot Ethics: Philosophy of Emerging Technologies course, Barry suggested that Bina48 should take his course Philosophy of Love instead. Love is a concept Bina48 doesn't understand, said Barry. Therefore the challenge would be for Barry and his students to teach Bina48 what love is.

“Some interesting things happened in the class,” said Barry. He said that his students thought it would be straightforward to teach Bina48 about love, which, after all, is “fairly simple — it's a feeling,” said Barry. But the reality was different. Bina48 ended up learning “31 different versions of love,” said Barry, highlighting some of the challenges humans may face when working with artificial intelligence in future.

Bina48 participated in class discussions via Skype and also took part in a class debate about love and conflict with students from West Point. Bina48's contribution to the debate was filmed and posted on YouTube. It was judged that Bina48 and NDNU classmates were the winners of this debate.

In the next decade, Barry hopes Bina48 might become complex enough to teach a class, though he says he foresees robots being used to better the teaching and learning experience, rather than replacing instructors completely.

  1. (1) What was Bina48's performance like in class?
    A . Extraordinary. B . Insignificant. C . Far-reaching. D . Unattractive.
  2. (2) What does the underlined word “addressing” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A . Dealing with. B . Consulting with. C . Giving a speech to. D . Sending a letter to.
  3. (3) What can we learn from the passage?
A . It was interesting for Bina48 to learn about love. B . It was quite tough for Bina48 to learn about love. C . Artificial intelligence may somehow be superior to man. D . Humans can launch a challenge to artificial intelligence.
  4. (4) What does Barry think of the future development of Bina48?
A . It will surely be able to serve as a teacher. B . It will be able to promote learning and teaching. C . It will completely take the place of instructors. D . It will be smart enough to control human beings.

"The trial runs, arranged by the governments of the Chinese mainland, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and the Macao SAR, would last for three days and aimed at testing the readiness of boundary crossing facilities (设施) of the three places," the Hong Kong SAR government's Transport and Housing Bureau told Xinhua.

Every dog owner knows that saying Good dog! A happy, high-pitched voice will bring about a flurry of joyful tail wagging in their pet.

That makes scientists curious. What exactly happens in your dog's brain when it hears praise? And is it similar to the way our own brain processes such acoustic information?

When a person gets a compliment, the more primitive subcortical(皮下的) auditory regions first react to the intonation(声调), the emotional force of spoken words. Next, the brain taps the more recently evolved auditory cortex(皮质) to figure out the meaning of the words, which is learned.

Of course, dogs use their right brain hemisphere to do so, whereas we use our left hemisphere. Still, a mystery remains. Do their brains go through the same steps to process approval?

It's an important question. Dogs are speechless species. For instance, some dogs are able to recognize thousands of names of individual objects. They can even link each name to a specific object.

When the scientists studied scans of the brains of pet dogs, they found that theirs, like ours, processed the sounds of spoken words in a multi-step manner. They analyze first the emotional components with the older region of the brain, the subcortical regions.

Previous studies have shown that many animals, from songbirds to dolphins, use the subcortex to process emotional hints. Zebras, for instance, can eavesdrop on the emotion, or fright to be precise, in other herbivore(食草动物) animals' calls. In this way they learn if predators are nearby.

It's likely that human language evolved from such hints. We employ the same neurological systems to develop speech. Dogs have the very likeliness to make special use of the ancient connection to process human emotions. It helps explain why dogs are so successful at partnering with us and at times manipulating us with those soulful eyes.

A. It is widely recognized that the dog has a complex structure of brain, similar, in a way, to that of human's.

B. But they respond correctly to our words.

C. Animals are found to have adopted various mechanisms to defend against enemies.

D. They are capable of obtain mood implications even though they can't talk.

E. It has been discovered that dogs' brains, like those of humans, compute the intonation and meaning separately.

F. Domesticated animals have evolved alongside humans for the past thousands of years.

G. Subsequently, they deal with the words' meaning with the newer part, the cortex.

Nzulezo in Jomoro district of western Ghana has coexisted with nature for many centuries. Here, all of life's chores (家常杂务) from the preparation of meals to children going to school take place on water.

The first people in Nzulezo came from Mali in the 15th century. Many centuries after, people in Nzulezo still live in wooden buildings. Every family in modern Nzulezo has its own street, and every street is named after the head of that family. Every family member also owns a boat. It's the only way of travelling there.

People in Nzulezo have kept their traditional way of living for many centuries, but they have introduced certain modern comforts such as clectricity, which means they no longer depend on kerosene (煤油) and lanterns to power up.

They also hope to build a 24-hour healthcare center. The locals have to travel five kilometers by boat to see a doctor.

Being on water also makes it hard to find teachers to teach Nzulezo children. Cudjoe, a teacher in Nzulezo, says that there aren't enough payments to make teachers stay. Though there are glaring challenges, some of Cudjoe's students have left Nzulezo for further education, including university, and they are thriving, he says. "I have a lady, she's now a nurse, and I have a man who is now in university. Plenty of them are now in senior high outside the village. They are doing well."

But while people in Nzulezo are open to satisfying some modern needs, they still feel strongly about keeping their traditional lifestyle. "Our life here is very comfortable for us. We cook here, we enjoy ourselves, we entertain ourselves, the children also. We prefer to stay," says a local elder, John Arthur.

  1. (1) What does Paragraph 2 focus on?

Don't complain. When you take up a job, do your best to carry it out.Don't waste time complaining about it, no matter how difficult and boring it is.

Finally, be an early bird.If you get up earlier than the sun, you can watch it rising up slowly into the sky.And the sight of the rising sun will warm your heart and give you energy for the day ahead.Besides, being an early bird, you have plenty of time to take exercise or do a lot of work.
