The 15-year-old actor Reese Hartwig stars in this summer's newest movie, Earth to Echo. Recently Jack and Jill interviewed this kid actor.
JJ: How did you get started in acting?
Reese: My family and I moved from Arizona to California because my dad worked for a company that provides cars for movies like Transformers. He was already in the business. When we came to California, I decided to give acting a shot.
JJ: How was your first audition (试演)?
Reese: My brother Ryan and I auditioned in the same building and on his birthday. Our agent said, “Why don't you each try out for both parts? ” I ended up booking the part he went in for, and he booked mine. That's how it started.
JJ: Is acting your dream job?
Reese: I've always wanted to be a plastic surgeon (整形外科医生), but I will need money from acting to get through college and medical school. Acting has been really fun, but you need a backup plan just in case.
JJ: Tell us about your new movie: Earth to Echo.
Reese: The movie's about three friends who live in a neighborhood that's being torn down to build a freeway. Soon, the friends begin receiving strange messages on their cell phones. It turns out they find an alien, Echo, and try to help the alien and save the neighborhood.
JJ: How was this — your first big acting role — different from other projects you've done?
Reese: Very different. The movie was filmed as if we, the characters, were holding the cameras and filming the scenes. It was an interesting shooting scene with the alien, Echo, because you acted with an inanimate (无生命的) object, and then the technical staff developed the character on the computer.

A booking came in a few weeks ago with a note attached that a guest would be travelling with her deaf father. This note helped us in preparing for their arrival. As they would be here for a number of days, his daughter wanted to make his trip to Ireland as smooth as possible.
Upon seeing this note and knowing I would be the one to check them in, I decided to learn some very basic sign language. I greeted the guest in my usual fashion, asking for the surname on the booking. Once I heard the name,I immediately realized who was standing in front of me.
I had been learning for two weeks how to say: "Welcome to Ireland. My sign language is terrible, but please, if you need anything during your stay, just let me know and we will help you."
I smiled at the father and daughter in front of me. Turning to the father, I greeted him in ASL (American Sign Language) and began the bit I had learned for him. His daughter broke down crying and told me I was sweet. But the father just smiled and was so happy. Honestly, seeing his reaction was enough for me. It was absolutely worth the last few weeks of learning basic ASL.
Sadly, I wasn't working the day they checked out, but they left a gift for me, a small box with some chocolates and a book on ASL. Inside was a note saying: "Thank you very much for what you did. My father has been in amazing spirits from the time you checked us in and insisted we get you a gift before we left. You have no idea how much this meant to my father and me, and we can't thank you enough. You've made his trip very special with one simple gesture."
I cried for a solid five minutes when I came into work the next day and found this gift in my locker.

One of the many great lines in the movie Apollo 13 came from Ed Harris, who played NASA Director of Operations, Gene Kranz. The famous line was, “Gentleman, failure is not an option.” He said the words because he had a clear purpose that the three astronauts trapped in space must be sent home safely. The driving force behind their seeking of a solution was motivated by a true purpose.
Here is the simple principle. If you have a big enough 'why' in life, you will always figure out the 'how.' A person without a purpose in life is like a boat without a rudder, floating aimlessly without a direction and going nowhere. In all walks of life, when referring to someone's success, we often hear the words “focus and determination”. But Merriam Webster defines the word “purpose” as the reason why something is done, a feeling of being determined to achieve an outcome. There are many talented and intelligent people in the world that are unsuccessful because they lack direction. I believe that our life depends on our purpose. Whether you're single or in a team, having a purpose allows you to start, evaluate, and improve your talents or abilities helps you find your path in life and achieve your success finally.
A friend of mine once told me that the most motivating speech he had ever heard was just three short words. It came from his wife when she said, “Honey I'm pregnant.” He said those few words instantly motivated him because he now had a big “why” in his life, a purpose to work hard to support his family. In fact, when your “why” gets bigger, you get better because you stop holding back and you'll go all out. It's why you often hear about some great people perform superhuman actions when failure is not an option!
To be successful people
Here are some opinions about successful and unsuccessful people.
Make life plans and set goals
You can't be successful without knowing where you are going. A life vision board, 10 years' plan and daily goals are useful tools of the successful people.
Keep a "To-be" list for the future
A "To-be" list is a great way to plan for the future. I want to be an elected official in the future. I want to be the CEO of a public company. Unsuccessful people have no idea what they want to be. How can you achieve success if you don't know what you want to be?
Study every day
Whether you are reading a magazine or a good book. You can learn and become knowledgeable as you read. While watching television may be good entertainment, you will hardly get anything out of TV to help you become more successful.
Want others to succeed
When you are in an organization with a group of people, in order to be successful, you all have to be successful. If you wish for their failures, why even work with them at all?
Accept responsibly for your failures
Where there are ups, there are most always downs. Being successful persons means always having to accept responsibly for your failures. It just puts other people down and no good comes from it.
A. Blaming others solves nothing. B. Your failures help your successes. C. I want to be a great father and husband. D. We want to make our life plans and goal. E. Get your vision and goals down on paper. F. Studying everyday educates you on new subjects. G. You need to want to see your co-workers improve and succeed. |
The earth became so violent whether the shape would last or not.
Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it?Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power?Start writing.
By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic behind what you think, feel,or only partly understand.Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explain power”.
Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many,if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep a journal of your ideas, the next time you're working on a big project, you'll probably have more success.
Want to understand a topic?Write a book about it.That's an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it,and you will understand it better.Want to invent something?Write an explanation of the problem—why you want to solve it,and why it is worth solving, and you're halfway there.
Writers don't always write because they clearly understand something beforehand.Often, they write about something because they want to understand it.You can do the same.Writing will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try.
Forests are always losers at the Olympics, and that's unlikely to change anytime soon.
For the winter games in PyeongChang, South Korea, virgin forest was destroyed on Mount Gariwang to accommodate ski runs. For the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, a ski run is set to wipe out part of the Songshan National Nature Reserve. And let's not forget the 240 acres of Atlantic Forest that were leveled for the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro to make way for a golf course.
For the upcoming Tokyo games, environmental and human rights advocates have been raising alarms about the use of tropical (热带的) wood to build the New National stadium. Activists have fought against such environmental destruction. The damage is often permanent, threatens endangered plants and animals and in some cases, causes conflicts with native people. But frequently the country's organizing committee, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have found ways to make it reasonable — despite a paragraph in the Olympic Charter (宪章) that states that the IOC's role is to "encourage and support a responsible concern for environmental issues".
"As it stands now, the IOC has little authority over a city's local organizing committee, which finally plans the event," Chappelet, professor of public management at the University of Lausanne, told Earther. "Even if the IOC is dissatisfied with the way host cities have prepared for the games, they have no built-in systems to watch them so that they strictly follow the Olympic Charter." The only thing they can do if they're not happy is to withdraw (= take back) the right to organize the game. "But the IOC could include more enforcement (执行) systems into the contract they make with the host city," he added. That contract must be signed and obeyed by everyone and those who break it must be fined.
Boykoff, the author of several books on the Olympics, suggested a similar solution. "The IOC could insist that host cities take their ecological (生态的) promises into account first, but instead they look the other way, time and time again," he said.
Ants have the ability to sniff out cancer cells in humans, a new study has discovered, suggesting they could be used for cancer diagnosis in future.
Researchers from the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) discovered that ant species Formica fusca (丝光褐林蚁) has a well - developed sense of smell. It was able to distinguish cancer cells from healthy cells in humans, thanks to their sense of smell, limited trials revealed. But more clinical tests must be carried out before they could be used in clinical settings like hospitals, the team said.
To conduct their research, the scientists performed tests with 36 ants, smelling cells under a laboratory setting. First, the specialists exposed the ants to the smell of a sample of cancerous human cells. This smell was then associated with a reward of sugar solution. In a second step, the researchers exposed the ants to two different smells. One was a new smell and the second was the smell of the cancer cells. Once this test was successful, the researchers exposed the ants to different cancer cells. As such, the scientists found that ants distinguished between cancer and healthy cells.
After training, Formica fusca ants are able to detect organic compounds (混合物) released by cancer cells. "This first study shows that ants have high potential, are capable of learning very quickly, at lower cost, and are efficient," points out CNRS. This isn't the first time that scientists have used the animal sense of smell to locate cancer cells. "Dogs' noses are well suited for medical diagnosis and used for the specific detection of cancer," the researchers explained. However, training them to do so requires several months to a year. "On the other hand, insects can be easily raised in controlled conditions, and hundreds of individuals can be trained with very few trials," the researchers pointed out. "Our approach could potentially be applied to a range of other complex smell detection tasks including the detection of explosives, spoiled food, or other diseases."

In our culture, the sources of what we call a sense of “mastery” —feeling important and
worthwhile—and the sources of what we call a sense of “pleasure”—finding life enjoyable—are not always the same. Women often are told “You can’t have it all.” Sometimes what the speaker really is saying is: “You choose a career, so you can’t expect to have closer relationships or a happy family life.” or “You have a wonderful husband and children—what’s all this about wanting a career?” But women need to understand and develop both aspects of well-being, if they are to feel good about themselves.
Our study shows that, for women, well-being has two aspects. One is mastery, which includes self-respect, a sense of control over your life, and low levels of anxiety and depression. Mastery is closely related to the “doing” side of life, to work and activity. Pleasure is the other aspect, and it is made up of happiness, satisfaction and optimism. It is tied more closely to the “feeling” side of life. The two are independent of each other. A woman could be high in mastery and low in pleasure, and vice versa(反之亦然). For example, a woman who has a good job, but whose mother has just died, might be feeling very good about herself and in control of her work life, but the pleasure side could be damaged for a time.
The concepts of mastery and pleasure can help us identify the sources of well-being for women, and correct past mistakes. In the past, women were encouraged to look only at the feeling side of life as the source of all well-being. But we know that both mastery and pleasure are important. And mastery seems to be achieved largely through work. In our study, all the groups of employed women were valued significantly higher in mastery than women who were not employed.
A woman’s well-being is developed when she takes on multiple(多项的)roles. At least by middle adulthood, the women who were involved in a combination of roles—marriages, motherhood, and employment—were the highest in well-being, in spite of warnings about stress and strain.
