iPads vs Textbooks
What if you could have your whole backpack at the touch of your fingertips? In the first month of the Apple iPads release, 25 million were sold! People all over the world use iPads for all sorts of different things, but one of their finest qualities is the ability to be a textbook.
To begin with, iPads are less expensive. Textbooks become outdated and schools have to buy new books, but with an iPad schools can update them for free. Schools don't have to spend D|S500 every year for iPads because they last a while and can be updated.
Students usually have multiple classes, which results in multiple textbooks. Heavy backpacks filled with books can cause back problem. A solution to that is an iPad, which only weighs 1. 33 pounds and can hold all of a student's textbooks.
Third, schools should get rid of their textbooks and get iPads because they have more capabilities. Some might think all of the apps are distracting, but the apps actually make iPads more efficient. Textbooks cannot do those tasks, but iPads can easily do them with just a tap of the fingertip.
Lastly, iPads are a better choice for schools instead of textbooks because these devices allow students to access their learning anywhere at any time. With iPads, they find it easier to get their homework done.
In conclusion, schools should get rid of their clumsy textbooks and switch to iPads. iPads have allowed this generation to have their entire backpack in the palm of their hands.
A. Second, iPads cost less and are more popular. B. These tablets are perfect for busy students. C. Therefore, they can use the saved money for other programs. D. Moreover, in high school, textbooks have an average of 4. 8 pounds each. E. iPads have already replaced textbooks in over 600 American counties. F. Schools have every reason to do away with their school books and switch to iPads. G. iPads absorb the need to buy calculators, dictionaries, and other items that are found within the device. |
They say after a parents dies, the surviving children can taken on some of their parent's characteristics. I 1becoming anything like my dad for years 2I wanted to be me, not him; but there I sat at his memorial service several months ago, telling myself, “ You've 3a lot more of your dad in you than you think.”
There is this phrase my dad 4, and I know I'm going to sound 5to complain about it, but it used to 6me. “ I am so proud of you,” he told us kids, whether we'd won a race or helped others. That should be a (n) 7thing, but here's what always 8 my mind: “ You are taking credit for what isn't really yours. You can be proud, but the 9 is mine.
Your parent is doing his best to give you 10, but you do not 11it. “ I'm so proud of you.” It came out of my dad's mouth 12, on those calls where I might have 13 something that happened at work or when he and Mom came to visit and we 14the talents of our two boys. I knew the feeling of parental 15well, especially when my boys achieved in ways that were 16my comprehension and ability, but I looked for other ways to 17 it. “ That's an extremely good story you've written!” I would say about the composition. I thought that by making my praise 18, it would feel like I was claiming their achievement less as mine and more as one they could own themselves.
So just the other day when my older son sent me an email about his scholarship, I searched for 19things to say, but finally20he doesn't need my cleverness. They just want what my dad gave me. “ I'm so proud of you,” I wrote. Just like the old man to me.
More than one American child dislike getting advice from their family member. They turn to "strangers". When they need advice, they don't usually go to people they know them. Instead many of them wrote letters to newspapers and magazines that give advice in many different subjects. Most newspapers regular print letters from readers with problems. Along with letters there are answers. The answers are written by people who are supposing to know how to solve so difficult problems. Some of these writers are doctors, and others are lawyers or educators. So two of the most famous writers of advice are women without special training for this kind of work.
According to a recent survey, violence did exist in schools. Students showed their fear and parents and teachers also expressed their great concern about it. Experts hope the whole (social) pay more attention to the mental health of adolescents(青少年).
Nowadays, school violence is a hot issue. I think this is a phenomenon, calls for our great concern. We should try every effort (prevent) violence happening at school for more and more students would drop out of school their personal safety could not (guarantee). In fact, violence can be learned. Children learn violent behavior from adults or from they see on television or on Internet.
If I meet with school violence, I will not answer violence violence, for it will result in (much) fighting. I will tell my teachers or parents about it. I think they will help me deal with it well and they will protect me from the bad guys.
All in all, every student should behave (he) and keep away from violence.
Alison Malmon was a freshman when she got a call from her mother: Her fun, outgoing older brother, Brian, had taken his own 1.
When Malmon returned to school after Brian's funeral that spring of 2000, she was still 2 . But when she looked for help on campus, there was nobody to 3Back then, said Malmon, "Students weren't encouraged to talk about their worries about 4 . I started 5 on the fact that there was a great need to give help."
She was only 19 and had no 6 with mental health issues, but that didn't 7 her from launching Open Minds at Penn. Now, 20 years later and with a new name - Active Minds - it is the largest young adult mental health advocacy 8 in America. "What V m most 9 by is that my generation and the generations coming behind me are taking on mental health as a social justice 10" says Malmon. "Our tools are changing not only their campuses, but they're 11 their families too."
Active Minds' techniques are more 12 than ever. A survey found that 45 percent of students reported feeling so 13 in the previous months that it was difficult to function; 66 percent felt overwhelming anxiety; and 13 percent 14 considered suicide (自杀).
Malmon's goal has always been to 15 the prejudice against mental illness, the language and 16the word we use to talk about it. Take the word suicide for example. You don't say" commit a heart attack or cancer", 17 you will say "commit suicide". Suicide is the only death where we use that pejorative (贬低 的) word, she says. "If we take that 18 out of our conversation, we can make significant changes in how we 19 suicide to the point. If we change, we can give the people the20 they reach out for."

Yellow Robot deliver snacks to your home
A robot makes its way back to a supermarket after making a delivery during a demonstration in Beijing.
Along a street on the outer edges of Beijing, a yellow and black cube about the size of a small washing machine moves leisurely to its destination. This “little yellow horse” is a delivery robot, transporting daily essentials like drinks, fruit and snacks from the local store to the residents. Equipped with GPS system, cameras and radar, the robot is seen by its creator as the future of logistics(物流) in China.
“The weak point is that it can't deliver directly to the door like a human.” said one customer, who does not live on the ground floor. “But it is still quite practical. The robot delivers relatively quickly.”
The robot takes off for Chinese customers' love of cashless payments and smartphone shopping. China is the world's biggest online shopping market with more than half of its population making at least one smartphone purchase per month, according to professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. Whether buying electronics, toilet paper or clothes, Chinese customers are used to simply tapping a button on their smartphone and getting a home delivery.
To get a delivery via the “little yellow horse”, customers select the desired products, tap in the address and pay via their phone. Then, the supermarket staff place the items in the robot.
Liu Zhiyong, founder and CEO of Zhen Robotics, which manufactures the robot, sees a bright future for his creation. “At the moment, there are 100 million packages delivered every day in China. It will be one billion in the future,” Liu said. “ There will not be enough humans to make the deliveries. We need more and more robots to fill this gap and reduce costs.” These costs are especially high in the last kilometer of a delivery.
Life affects friendships. As we grow, marry, fight in wars, move across the country or change jobs, old friendships fall away and new ones form. As long as we live, the things around us change, and as long as things change, friendships are affected.
When we were children, we had best friends. No matter what happened we were still friends. We live our lives, however, and do what life calls for us to do, and as we got older, memories fade, faces blur(变得模糊),and even friend's names from childhood are forgotten.
Do you have a question about friendship? Do you wonder what to do with a friend who is no longer friendly? Perhaps you will see that you can't control others. If someone wants to be your friend, it is their choice. All you can do is treat them well and do the best for them when you are with them. Then you wish them well when they leave.
You can talk to old timers and they will tell you that life is full of incredible(令人难以置信的)joy and incredible sorrow, and that what bothers you today will one day becomes a memory and the pain will be gone. Seniors might tell you that you will learn more as you get older. They will tell you that friendships come and friendships go. Sometimes when they go it will hurt, but you will be okay with it. It's the way life works, after all.
Most people would say the sea is blue and green. But the people who live near the coast of Zhejiang may say it is red. It is not people who caused the colour change, but very small living thing in the sea. They are algae(藻类)and protozoa(原生动物). They come in many different colours; red, yellow or brown. Red is the easiest of those to see so when this happens people call it a “red tide.”
Red tides only happen when conditions in the sea are right. In the past few years, factories and people have been putting more chemicals into the sea. These chemicals help algae and protozoa to grow very quickly. The temperature of the sea is also important. Red tides usually happen at 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. Red tides often happen in dry, warm areas where there is little wind. Living things grow easily in these places. Sometimes fishermen help red tides by mistake. They put small sea animals into the water for food to help fish grow.
Those living things do more than change the colour of the water-they also put poison and mucus(黏液)into the sea. This is had for fish. The poison is bad for their brains. And too much mucus in the sea fills up fish's gills(鳃) so they can't breathe. Lots of dead fish and other sea animals are now washed up on Chinese beaches.
Red tides can be bad for people too. We shouldn't eat fish from red-tide waters. The algae gets inside of fish and it smells bad. It can make your eyes water. If people eat fish with too much algae inside they could die.
Fishermen in Zhejiang are having a hard time right now. Because of the red tide, they are selling 30% less fresh seafood than usual.
In China red tides usually happen in May and June around places like Fujian Guangdong and Hong Kong.
Many other countries sometimes also have red tides. But it seems that we have few ways to stop red tides. They can last as long as 16 months.

Good health is the most precious thing in the world. When you have got it, you never think about it. When you haven’t got it, you think about it all the time. Our biggest enemies are not terrible, diseases and so on. We are our own biggest enemies because we sometimes destroy our own good health. Some of us eat too much, drink too much and smoke too much. And though our reason tells us we should control ourselves, we find it difficult. The fact is that most human beings need stimulation. Who doesn’t enjoy a drink after a busy day? Only a smoker knows the pleasure of a cigarette with a cup of coffee.
So far so good. The danger is when these innocent pleasure run our lives and so destroy our health. When you find yourself eating between meals or eating too much rich food, when you can only keep yourself going by taking frequent drinks or by smoking one cigarette after another, then it’s time to stop and think what you might be doing to yourself. The funny thing is that when we don’t control ourselves, simple pleasures are no longer simple pleasures.
All right, I know what you’re thinking. You’re probably saying: “It’s all very well for him to talk, but I can’t help myself. I need that extra bit of food, that extra drink, that extra cigarette. Life has so many pressures that I can’t manage without them. ” But I’m saying you can help yourself. Not only that you must help yourself. Because if you don’t help yourself, no one else can. So be your own best friend.

Warm weather brought by El Nino has had mixed effects on animals in usually snowy places in North America, including New England, according to an Associated Press article.
Some animals seem to benefit from having a chance to gather more food before winter, and from expending less energy in daily survival mode. Others, like snowshoe hares, are put at center stage in predators’(捕食者) view when they lack snow for disguising(掩饰) their white fur — not a god thing for them, of course.
Black bears, on the other hand, have been keeping busy gathering nuts and apples, when they would normally have settled into their winter homes by now. Vermont and Massachusetts officials have asked residents(居民) to wait till snow falls to take out their bird feeders for the sake of safety, the article said.
“We suggest waiting for 6 or more inches of snow that lasts before taking out your bird feeders, especially if you have been visited in the past by bears or if there are sightings of bears in your neighborhood,” Forrest Hammond, Vermont Fish and Wildlife’s bear biologist, said in the article. “Due to lack of snow and frozen ground, birds are able to seek food in fields and forests for their natural foods.”
Snow amounts can also determine how comfortable bears are and how quickly they consume their accumulated fat during hibernation(冬眠), noted Hammond in the article. This is because snow covers and traps them in their winter homes, and also hides them from predators.
12. What may upset snowshoe hares because of El Nino?
A. Their being caught more easily.
B. Their failing to gather more food.
C. Their consuming more energy.
D. Their losing sight of their enemies.
13. Why did the officials ask people to keep bird feeders until snow falls?
A. They many disturb bears.
B. There’s no need to do so.
C. To avoid attracting bears.
D. For the safety of bears.
14. What do the bear biologist’s words imply?
A. A heavy snow is on the way.
B. Bears are common nowadays.
C. Bears live mainly on birds in winter.
D.
Warm weather benefits birds in winter.
15. Which of the following is the proper title for the passage?
A. Warm Weather Helps Animals Survive
B. Snow Amounts Determine Animals’ Winter Life
C. Measures Should Be Taken To Protect Wildlife
D. Lack of Snow Affects North American Animals
Teachers say the digital age has had a good influence — and a not-so-good influence — on this generation of American teenagers. More than 2,000 middle and high school teachers took an online survey. Researchers also spoke with teachers in focus groups.
Three-quarters of the teachers said the Internet and digital search tools have had a “mostly positive” effect on their students’ research habits and skills. But 87 percent agreed that these technologies are creating an “easily distracted(分心的)generation” . And 64 percent said the technologies “do more to distract students than to help them academically. ” Many students think doing research now means just doing a quick search on Google.
The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the College Board and the National Writing Project. A majority of the teachers came from Advanced Placement classes, which provide college-level work for high school students.
Judy Buchanan is director of the National Writing Project and a co-author of the report. Ms.
Buchanan says digital research tools are helping students learn more, and learn faster.
“Teachers really like these tools because they are ways to make some of learning exciting and engaging. Young people like these tools. And the goal is to really help them become creators of content, and meaningful content, and not just sort of consumers. ”
But one problem the survey found is that many students are lacking in digital literacy. In other words, they trust too much of the information they find on the Internet. Judy Buchanan says these students have not developed the skills they need to judge the quality of online information.
“It’s just a lot to learn about how to distinguish authentic sources. And it’ s something that really has to be taught and paid attention to. It’s like everything else — in a world in which things can happen quickly, you really do need to have a way to step back ,reflect and analyze the information you have. And teachers can do a lot to teach that.,
Another problem the survey found is blamed on something that might not seem like a problem at all : being able to quickly find information online. Teachers say the result is a reduction in the desire and ability of their students to work hard to find answers. They say students are overly dependent on search engines and do not make enough use of printed books or research librarians.
Many teachers are also concerned that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others instead of using their own abilities.
55.Most teachers who took the online survey thought the internet tools help students in_______.
A. becoming more independent
B. being more serious in study
C. doing a quick search on Google
D. developing their research ability
56.According to Ms. Buchanan, the survey aims_______.
A. to help students become more creative
B. to draw students attention away from the internet
C. to make people learn the benefits of the internet tools
D. to persuade students to use traditional ways of research
57. According to the researchers, which of the following do students lack when facing the internet?
A. The ability of doing research online.
B. The interest in using the internet tools.
C.The skills of judging online information.
D.The methods of obtaining online information.
58.Which of the following is the disadvantage of the internet tools?
A.Offering little useful information.
B. Search engines are very convenient.
C.Making students unwilling to work hard.
D.Making students addicted to online information.
