While her mother was cooking, she a good idea.
Aerial performer Jennifer Bricker was born without legs, but she never let it stop her.
Wrapped in a loop of red silk hung from the ceiling Jennifer Bricker climbs and twists to the music. Her head hangs down and her strong arms let go as she balances on her back, high above the ground a move that's all the more daring because she has no legs.
Jennifer was a few months old when she was adopted by Sharon and Gerald Bricker. She had big brown eyes, a bright smile, and huge amounts of energy. When a doctor advised her adoptive parents to carry her around in a kind of bucket, they refused.
Jennifer soon learned to walk — and run — on her hands and bottom, and grew up fearlessly climbing trees and bouncing on the trampoline(蹦床) with her three older brothers. “My parents didn't treat me differently so I didn't grasp the concept that I was different. I knew I didn't have legs but that wasn't stopping me from doing the things I wanted to do.”
At the age of three she was fitted with artificial legs, but she never really took to them — she moved more freely without.
In 1996 the Olympic Games took place in Atlanta. Jennifer loved to watch the women's gymnastics team, and especially adored the 14-year-old Dominique Moceanu who competed for the US. When Moceanu and the women's team won gold, Jennifer decided she was going to be a gymnast, too. She took up power tumbling, which involves performing floor exercises down a runway. But Jennifer did not want any allowances to be made for her disability.
At the age of 10 she took part in the Junior Olympics and by age 11 she was tumbling champion for the state of Illinois.
Jennifer now travels the world as an inspirational speaker and acts as an aerial performer.
A lifetime of active exercise will let you keep the body of a 20-year-old well into your 70s, scientists have found.
The physical decline (衰退) thought to be an unavoidable part of ageing is actually the result of not exercising enough, according to the research, which found that regular cyclists kept the muscles, lungs, and even the immune system (免疫系统) of people years younger. Besides, many serious health problems could be prevented if people became more active, researchers insist.
Janet Lord, a leading researcher, said, “Our findings prove the false belief that ageing automatically makes us weaker. We now have strong evidence that encouraging people to do regular exercise throughout their lives can solve the problem that we are living longer but not healthier.”
She looked at 125 cyclists aged 55 to 79 who had been exercising regularly for 25 years and compared them with 75 ordinary people of a similar age and 55 people aged 20 to 36. On a series of physical measures, the cyclists showed no difference from people much younger in their immune systems and making T cells.
Now Professor Lord aims to discover how much exercise people need to do to stay young. “You needn't work out a lot. It may be intensity (强度) that helps—like going up and down the stairs ten times a day.”
While there is no magic method of staying mentally and physically fit in later life, the benefits of keeping active can never be ignored, whatever your age or state of health.
A group of graduates got together to visit their old university professor.
The conversation soon turned into complaints about 1 in work and life. To offer his2 coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and 3 with a large pot of coffee and a 4 of cups—porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain-looking, some expensive, some beautiful—telling them to 5 themselves to the coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said, “If you have 6all the nice-looking expensive cups have been taken up, 7 the plain and cheap ones. While it is 8 for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the 9 of your problems and stress.”
“Be assured that the cup itself 10 no quality to the coffee. 11 it is just more expensive and in some cases 12 hides what we drink.”
“13 all of you really want is coffee, not the cup, 14 you consciously went for the best cups… And then you began 15 each other's cups.”
Now consider this: 16 is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and 17life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the 18 of life we live. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we 19 to enjoy the coffee. Value the coffee, not the cups! Don't let the cups 20 you...enjoy the coffee instead.
A. When a child should learn to read B. Why it is fun to teach a child reading C. What if a child has reading problems D. How you prepare a young child for reading E. What is the best way to teach a child reading F. Whether reading early promises later achievements |
⑴
Learning to read early has become one of those indicators — in parents' minds at least – that their child is smart. In fact, reading early has very little to do with whether a child is successful academically. Research has shown that difficulty with reading is often due not to inferior intelligence but to differences in the developmental wiring of each individual child. In some cases, there are neurological problems and developmental lags that can be overcome with proper training.
⑵
Traditionally, American schools teach children at age six, but many schools begin teaching informally in kindergarten and pre-kindergarten. If parents start too early to encourage reading, and a child does not immediately succeed, the parent has a hard time relaxing and letting the child go at his or her own pace.
⑶
Over the years, research has proved that the use of both the “whole language" method and the "phonic" method works best for a child to master reading. While the whole language approach, which includes reading to children and getting them interested in both the activity of reading and the story they are reading, is helpful, phonics must be taught. Children must be taught that one of the squiggles they see is a "p" and another a "b". Getting the print off the page requires a different ability than being able to understand the meaning of what is written.
⑷
You can start developing the skills needed in reading at a very young age without putting any pressure on children. Besides reading to them, parents can start "ear training" their child by playing thyme games. This develops the child's ability to recognize different sounds. In reading to children, parents also can point to words as they go, teaching the child that the funny lines on the page are the words you are saying. All this should be a fun activity.
⑸
Once a child is in school, the learning of reading is inevitably more serious. For children who have some kind of reading difficulty, you must get a professional diagnosis. While the teacher might say the child is merely disinterested but will get over it, disinterest or poor performance in reading can stem from a number of things, some being very specific learning disabilities that can be identified and worked on. But it is very tricky for parents to deal with their own child's learning disabilities.
On Oct 8th, 2019, Iceland honored the passing of Okjokull, the first of Iceland's glaciers to disappear on account of climate change. In 1890, the glacier ice covered 16 square kilometers but in 2012, it (measure) just 0.7 square kilometers. A monument is set up at the site of the former glacier, bears the inscription (题词) A Letter to the Future, and is intended (raise) awareness about the decline of glaciers and the effects of climate change.
The world is quickly realizing is necessary to actively pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere to prevent the ill effects of climate change. Scientists and engineers have proposed a (various) of techniques to deal with the change. , most would be extremely expensive — without (bring) any profits. Therefore, no one wants to foot the bill.
One method explored in the past decade might now be a step closer becoming practical. The process (involve) pumping CO2 carried through the air down into methane hydrates (甲烷水合物) right under the seafloor, where the gas will be (permanent) stored, or separated. The incoming CO2 pushes out the methane, which will be piped to the surface and burned to provide electricity, to power the separation operation or to bring in money to pay for it.
“Educational researchers, political scientists and economists are increasingly interested in the characteristics and skills that parents, teachers and schools should foster in children to increase chances of success later in life,” said lead author Marion Spengler, PhD of the University of Tubingen.” Our research found that specific behaviors in high school have long-lasting effects for one's later life.”
Spengler and her co-authors analyzed data collected by the American Institutes for Research from 346, 660 U. S. high school students in 1960, along with follow-up data from 81,912 of those students 11 years later and 1,952 of them 50 years later. The initial high school phase measured a variety of student behaviors and attitudes as well as personality characteristics, cognitive abilities, parental socioeconomic status and demographic(人口统计的)factors. The follow-up surveys measured overall educational attainment, income and occupational prestige(声望).
Being a responsible student, showing an interest in school and having fewer problems with reading and writing were all significantly associated with greater educational attainment and finding a more prestigious job both 11 years and 50 years after high school. These factors were also all associated with higher income at the 50-year mark. Most effects remained even when researchers controlled parental socioeconomic status, cognitive aibility and other broad personality characteristics such as conscientiousness.
While the findings weren't necessarily surprising, Spengler noted how reliably specific behaviors people showed in school were able to predict later success.
Further analysis of the data suggested that much of the effect could be explained by overall educational achievements, according to Spengler.
“Student characteristics and behaviors were rewarded in high school and led to higher educational attainment, which in turn was related to greater occupational prestige and income later in life,” she said. “This study highlights the possibility that certain behaviors at crucial periods could have long-term consequences for a person's life.”
Exercise helps to keep us in good health. Doctors at the American Heart Association suggest getting at least 150 minutes of proper physical activity every week. Many people exercise for a few minutes every day or every other day. So, getting 150 minutes every week is easy.
But what about those times when you are sick? If you do not feel well, should you keep following your exercise habit? Following are the answers from health experts.
Edward R. Laskowski is a doctor at the Mayo Clinic. He and other experts have a general rule about exercising when you are sick. It is usually fine to exercise properly (not hard), he explains, if your symptoms are all "above the neck". These signs may include a runny nose, sneezing or a sore throat.
Geralyn Coopersmith, a physical fitness trainer who has written several books on exercise offers similar advice. However, both Coopersmith and Dr. Laskowski suggest taking a break from exercising if signs of your illness appears "below the neck". Pay special attention to symptoms such as chest congestion, bad cough or pain in the stomach.
There are other symptoms that can tell you to avoid exercise. They include a higher than normal body temperature, a sense of feeling very tired, and widespread muscle pain.
Both Coopersmith and Dr. Laskowski suggest listening to your body. If you feel really bad, take a break and let your body rest. If you don't feel too bad, these experts both suggest cutting down the amount of exercise. For example, if you usually run, take a quick walk instead.
We accomplish our goals one step at a time, doing a little each day. So, starting your day on the right foot is most important.
Get up an hour early.
People who get up early in the morning have a jump on the day. In American English, we like to say, “The early bird gets the worm.”This expressions means that people who rise up early have a head start and, therefore, are more likely to succeed.
Don't answer e-mail or jump into social media as soon as you get up.
We've all done it. You see a Facebook post from a friend you haven't seen for a long time. He is angry about some political issue and the heated discussion pulls you in.You hurry out the door so as not to be late for work. This is not the best way to start your day.
Exercise!
Physical fitness experts and trainers often suggest some form of exercise in the morning because the middle of the day is a busy time for most people. By the day's end, you may not have the time or energy to exercise.
Think about your day at night.
Take time at the end of the day to think back on all the things that have happened. It may help you to prepare if you take a few minutes to think about what you need to do the next day.
A. And spend a little time to think about tomorrow.
B. Here, if you're a bird, the worm is the reward.
C. In fact, the morning may be the most productive part of your day.
D. Exercising in the morning prevents that from happening.
E. Avoid jumping into social media as soon as you get up.
F. Here are four ideas on how to start your day off right.
G. Before you know it, an hour has passed.
