Looking back at my younger years, I am sometimes amazed at how life has turned out. Nothing is exactly what I had originally planned for. The only thing that stays the same is who I am, my values, and my interests. If I could go back in time and hang out with my younger self for a day, here's what I would tell her.

    ⒈Everything happens for a reason.

Without mistakes and failure, you would never have learned. Without pain, you would never have grown. So don't stress or think that life is unfair, because everything happens for a reason. And only time will tell what it will teach us.

⒉Focus on one thing at a time. You can have it all but not all at once.

It is not surprising that many of us are doing too many things at once. We need to make ends meet. But if you are working three jobs at a time, it is not likely that you will succeed at any of them. You have to keep your eyes on the big picture. You have to ask yourself what exactly do you want to achieve for the next 10 years? Focus on one thing at a time. Achieve your goals one by one.

⒊You can plan ahead, but your plan will definitely change when the time comes.

You can plan ahead because sometimes planning ahead can give you a clearer direction of where you want to go. However, plans will almost always change, so be prepared!

    ⒋Trust your instincts.(直觉)

Don't worry too much about a decision you have to make. Just do what feels right. You know what you want. You might consult other people. But deep down, you know what you want. Do what makes you happy. Because at the end of the day, even if you follow logic, you will want to quit and follow your heart.

⒌It's okay to be unsure about your purpose in life.

You might be graduating or have hit a turning point with your career. You might feel a bit lost and unsure of where to go. It's okay. Go out there and try as many different things as you can. Don't ever feel like you're wasting your time. Enjoy the journey. Don't rush. Every little path will lead you somewhere. And looking back, you will be able to connect the dots. It will all make sense.

⒍Don't try too hard with people.

Don't worry if you feel like it's hard to make new friends. Just be yourself and be as open as you can. It might take a while until you find new best friends and a mate for life, but when you do, you will know it. It's not hard work. So, just do your thing and be yourself.

Apple and Google have teamed up to launch a mobile phone tool to follow the contacts of people infected with coronavirus (冠状病毒). The technology is a form of contact tracing, a method used to identify people who may have had contact with infected individuals in an attempt to prevent additional spread of disease. If a device user becomes infected with the virus and agrees to share that information, the record could be used to inform other people that the user could have infected.

Major technology companies—including Google and Facebook—have been denounced in recent years for not protecting user privacy. In some cases, companies have been accused of secretly selling user data. In the past, Apple chief Tim Cook has criticized Facebook and Google for putting profits ahead of user privacy.

However, now numerous technology companies and organizations have been seeking to develop tools to help fight COVID-19. Health and government officials have called for such technology to help fight the current crisis.

In announcing the new system, Apple and Google said its developers had built in "strong protections around user privacy." The companies said the technology would not identify personal information or record user movements. It is designed to only catch data about when users' phones have been near each other. Data will not be kept on company servers, Apple and Google added. The two companies also said they would "openly publish information" about their work for others to examine.

Pam Dixon is director of the not-for-profit World Privacy Forum. She told The Associated Press that after discussing the new system with a top Apple official, she is convinced that people's privacy will be protected.

"I think they've taken care of some of the really big problems," she said. Dixon notes that the companies are able to turn of the system when it is no longer needed. The government is not going to have identity information of those testing positive.

Betty and Harold have been married for years. But one-thing still puzzles old Harold. How is it that he can leave Betty and her friend Joan sitting on the sofa, talking, go out to a ballgame, come back three and a half hours later, and they're still sitting on the sofa?

Talking? What in the world, Harold wonders, do they have to talk about?

Betty shrugs(耸肩). Talk? We're friends.

Researching this matter called friendship, psychologist Lillian Rubin spent two years interviewing more than two hundred women and men. No matter what their age, their job, their sex, the results were completely clear: women have more friendships than men, and the difference in the content and the quality of those friendships is "marked and unmistakable."

More than two-thirds of the single men Rubin interviewed could not name a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman. Yet three-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, and almost always it was a woman. More married men than women named their wife/husband as a best friend, most trusted person, or the one they would turn to in time of emotional distress(痛苦). "Most women," says Rubin, "identified at least one, usually more, trusted friends to whom they could turn in a troubled moment, and they spoke openly about the importance of these relationships in their lives."

"In general," writes Rubin in her new book, "women's friendships with each other rest on shared emotions and support, but men's relationships are marked by shared activities. ""For the most part", Rubin says, "interactions between men are emotionally controlled-a good fit with the social requirements of "manly behavior. "

"Even when a man is said to be a best friend," Rubin writes, "the two share little about their innermost feelings. While a woman's closest female friend might be-the first to tell her to leave a failing marriage, it wasn't unusual to hear a man say he didn't know his friend's marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa. "

  1. (1) What old Harold cannot understand or explain is the fact that : ___
A . women have so much to share B . he finds his wife difficult to talk to C . women show little interest in ballgames D . he is treated as an outsider rather than a husband

    A . her parents B . her husband C . a male friend D . a female friend
  3. (3) According to the passage, which type of behavior is NOT expected of a man by society?
A . Going out to ballgames too often. B . Complaining about his marriage trouble. C . Spending too much time with his friends. D . Ending his marriage without good reason.
  4. (4) Which of the following statements is best supported by the last paragraph?

Recently a growing number of foreign universities, such as the University of Cambridge, are accepting China's gaokao results as one of their admission standards. Is the Chinese college entrance exam being recognized globally? Forum readers share their opinions:

Cecilia Zhang (China)

The gaokao is a really tough exam. If possible, it can be used as one of the indicators(指标) for foreign universities, in addition to other indicators, such as how well they speak the target language. The students, who perform well in the gaokao, also have the ability to successfully adapt to Western styles of education. I believe accepting the gaokao as an indicator is a win-win for Chinese students and overseas universities.

Wchao 37 (US)

In fact gaokao is perhaps much more difficult than the S   AT or ACT exams. You can get a perfect score of 1600 on the SAT but not in the gaokao, partly because the SAT is a machine-scored multiple-choice exam. Do you know anyone that has ever achieved a perfect score in the gaokao?

Harry 01 (UK)

Hundreds of students from China have entered universities in the UK using their gaokao scores, which require that their knowledge of English be above a certain level. This measure has benefited specific groups of students from various backgrounds in China.

Mbursian (   Canada)

In order to attend a university in an English-speaking country, a student needs to have an acceptable band score on the IELTS. Most importantly, students need an acceptable knowledge of the language spoken in any country they plan to study in. Now the Chinese gaokao is closer to meeting the requirements of different countries.

  1. (1) Who believes accepting the Chinese gaokao benefits both native students and universities abroad?
    A . Cecilia Zhang. B . Wchao 37. C . Harry 01. D . Mbursian.
  2. (2) What is most important for Chinese students planning to study abroad?
A . The IELTS score. B . Enough test preparation. C . The Chinese gaokao score. D . Knowledge of the native language
  3. (3) What does the text intend to tell the readers?
A . The gaokao will replace other tests. B . The gaokao is becoming globally accepted. C . The gaokao is the most difficult of all tests. D . The University of Cambridge made a good decision.

I can proudly say that last year I broke the record for the oldest person in the world to ride a roller-coaster. I'm 105, but I feel younger. Even the doctor agrees I'm in good condition. I'm a bit deaf and my legs feel weak, but they are the only issue.

I rode the Twistosaurus at Flamingo Land, which spins you round quite fast. I didn't choose to go on that. I'd have preferred a really fast one that went upside down. But I was told I couldn't ride something like that, because my blood pressure could drop and I might have some danger.

I wasn't nervous — I don't get frightened of anything. I was securely fastened, so I knew I wouldn't fall out. The roller-coaster ride went on for three or four minutes, and it couldn't be a better experience. And I raised a lot of money for the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance fund, which was fantastic.

People were saying I'd got a place in the Guinness World Records. Later, someone came to present me with the certificate. I had it on the wall in my living room, with another one that got a year earlier.

My record-breaking ways really began a couple of years ago, with the ice-bucket challenge. It turned out that I was probably the oldest person in the world to do it, and the video was very popular. After that, I stared to think about what else I could do to raise money for different charities.

I'm not sure if anyone admires all the fun I'm having. They just say I'm daft and that's about it. But I've had many good days and many exciting times. I've had a really good life. I don't think I've wasted any of it.

  1. (1) Why didn't the author choose to go on riding the Twistosaurus?
A . Because he was in a bad physical condition. B . Because he was told not to do so. C . Because he considered it too gentle. D . Because he thought it spun too fast.
  2. (2) How did the author most probably react while riding the roller-coaster?
A . He really enjoyed himself. B . He was very worried at first. C . He couldn't think much about it. D . He got frightened as it started moving.
  3. (3) What do you know about the author from Paragraph 4?
A . He was the oldest person in the world. B . He set a record the year before last year. C . He disliked showing off his success. D . He was eager to get certificates.
  4. (4) What does the underlined word “daft” in the last paragraph probably mean?
    A . healthy. B . strong. C . crazy. D . funny.

A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly. The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.

“It's extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just the sum of a bunch of individual components,” said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. A few years ago, his team got the go-ahead to start piecing the components together. “The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own,” he said.

They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependencies on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, and then has to be matched well to everything it's connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation, sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured.

Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day to day basis.”

  1. (1) What was the difficulty for engineers to make the robotic fly?
A . Lacking enough engineers. B . Lacking ready-made components. C . Starling to study the system too late. D . Having no way to fix components together.
  2. (2) What was the system of the robotic fly like?
A . It was huge but solid. B . It was small and changeable. C . It was complex but precise. D . It was fixed and traditional.
  3. (3) What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A . Engineers will fix the system on some animals. B . The system of the robotic fly will have a great effect on our daily life. C . The system of the robotic fly will face lots of scientific questions. D . Engineers will use the findings of the system to do further research.
  4. (4) What can we learn from the text?
A . Robert Wood did the research on his own. B . Wood will produce the system to put it onto the market. C . The robotic system can have some different functions. D . Engineers made the system in order to study power technologies.

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track your performance on your phone.

The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection.

The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a doctor actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.

The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications(应用) on your phone, so developers could, for example, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters(怪物) among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Serval says.

Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes,” but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.

The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, for $99 to $199, depending on features. The U.S. is the first target market.

Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.

7. Which is one of the features of the Kolibree toothbrush?

A. It can sense how users brush their teeth.

B. It can track users’ school performance.

C. It can cause users’ fear of seeing a doctor.

D. It can help users find their phones.

8. What can we learn from Serval’s words in Paragraph 3?

A. You will find it enjoyable to see a doctor.

B. You should see your doctor on a day-to-day basis.

C. You can brush with the Kolibree as if guided by a doctor.

D. You’d like a doctor to watch you brush your teeth every day.

9. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?

A. How Serval found out his kids lied to him.

B. Why Serval thought brushing teeth was necessary.

C. How Serval taught his kids to brush their teeth.

D. What inspired Serval to invent the toothbrush.

10. What can we learn about the future development of the Kolibree?

A. The brush handle will be removed.

B. A mobile phone will be built into it.

C. It will be used to fill holes in teeth.

D. It will be able to check users’ teeth.
