Every man wants his son to be somewhat of a clone, not in features but in footsteps. As he grows you also age, and your ambitions become more unachievable. You begin to realize that your boy,in your footsteps, could probably accomplish what you hoped for.But footsteps can be muddied and they can go off in different directions.

My son Jody has hated school since day one in kindergarten.Science projects waited until the last moment.Book reports weren't written until the final threat.

I've been a newspaperman all my adult life.My daughter is a university graduate working toward her master's degree in English. But Jody? When he entered the tenth grade he became a “vo-tech” student(技校学生).They're called “motorheads” by the rest of the student body.

When a secretary in my office first called him “motorhead”,I was shocked.“Hey,he's a good kid,” I wanted to say.“And smart, really.”

I learned later that motorheads are, indeed, different. They usually have dirty hands and wear dirty work clothes. And they don't often make school honor rolls(光荣榜).

But being the parent of a motorhead is itself an experience in education. We who labor in clean shirts in offices don't have the abilities that motorheads have.I began to learn this when I had my car crashed. The cost to repair it was estimated at $800.“Hey,I can fix it,” said Jody.I doubted it ,but let him go ahead, for I had nothing to lose.

My son ,with other motorheads, fixed the car. They got parts(零件)from a junkyard,non-toasting toaster have been fixed.Neighbours and co-workers trust their car repair to him.

Since that first repair job,a broken air-conditioner,a non-functioning washer and a non-toasting toaster have been fixed.Neighbors and co-workers trust their car repairs to him.

These kids are happiest when doing repairs. They joke and laugh and are living in their own relaxed world. And their minds are bright despite their dirty hands and clothes.

I have learned a lot from my motorhead: publishers need printers, engineers need mechanics, and architects need builders. Most important,I have learned that fathers don't need clones in footsteps or anywhere else.

My son may never make the school honor roll. But he made mine.

It was the 9th day of Wuhan lockdown (封锁) starting on January 23. My parents left because they had been running fever for several days and they were showing other symptoms of COVID- 19.

The virus, COVID- 19, is somehow fearsome because it does not discriminate (区别 对待) in choosing who it infects (感 染). And if the older people were infected, the situation could be worse, so I was wondering whether my parents would make it.

On the second day, my parents called and asked me how I was. We talked using Facetime, and the moment I saw mom lying there with an oxygen mask and my dad could not talk without breathing heavily, I realized that I had to live on my own.

But two weeks later, I got a fever and had to go into quarantine (隔离) to be Observed(观察) for 14 days. Fortunately, my illness turned out to be not COVID- 19.      Everything there was busy, and there seemed to be a shortage of medical staff and Materials (材料) were in short supply. Even though the doctors and nurses were covered from head to toe, I could see how tired they were when I looked into their bloodshot eyes.

Most of the patients were really understanding, but of course there were those who were not, and complained (抱怨) loudly, but all the doctors and nurses tried their best to deal with it in a calming way.

When the quarantine was over, every patient thanked the workers for what they had done, but the answer they received was exactly the same: "That's what we're here for."

When I was in my fourth year of teaching, I was also (and am still) a high school track and field coach(田径教练). One year, I had a student, John, who entered my class when he was a junior. John changed to our school from Greece, and seemed to be interested in sports, so I encouraged him to join our track team. I explained to him that even though he had never taken part in it before, I did believe that he could do well in any event, and I would be willing to coach him at whichever ones interested him. He accepted the offer, and began to work hard at every practice.

About a month later, I had found out from other sources that John was a first-class tennis player, winning various junior awards in his home country. I went to him asking, "John, I really appreciate that you came out for the track team, but why didn't you play tennis instead? It seems that would interest you a lot more, since you're so good at it." John answered, "Well, I like tennis, but you told me that you believed in me, and that you thought I could do well in track, so I wanted to try it for that reason."

From then on, I often remember my student's reply. I told it to a friend and she suggested I write it down to share somewhere with more teachers. No matter how critical (不满的) students can be of them-selves, I've found that a simple "I trust that you can do it!" can go a long way!

On a cool morning, Wilson Kasaine walks along a dirt path in southern Kenya. Actually, Kasaine is tracking lions. Particularly, he is tracking one lion called Marti.
Tracking lions on foot may sound dangerous, but Kasaine has been doing it for most of his life. Born in a traditional Maasai family, he understood the beauty and risk of the wildlife. Living with big game forces him to develop a good sense of where animals have been and where they might be going. During his 12-kilometer walks to and from school, he learned how to tell the paw prints of a lion from those of other animals.
Growing up, Kasaine knew that improving his tracking abilities would help him avoid other dangerous animals. But maybe Kasaine didn’t know that, years later, he would be tracking lions specifically to encounter them and to protect them. Today he leads a small group of wide-eyed tourists over a red sandy path in the reserve, searching for the lion that has left upon it his unmistakable prints.
Each year, tens of thousands of tourists come to Kenya’s national parks to try to visit the “big five”: elephants, rhinoceros, leopards, buffaloes, and lions. The attraction of these animals to people all over the world means that the nation’s economy is tied to the protection of its wildlife. If Kenya’s wildlife disappears, so does its second-largest source of income.
Considering the rapid urban development in Kenya, this isn’t unimaginable. In 2016, a study shows that many of the nation’s most treasured species have fallen to less than one-third of their population counting from just 40 years ago. The number of lions fell too. In 1998, the nation was home to over 15,000; only about 2,000 remain today. Several experts have predicted they could disappear entirely from the country in the next two decades.
Wildlife protection efforts in Kenya must be at the sacrifice of other things. People were forced to leave their land and into smaller surrounding regions. Communities like Kasaine’s are now finding it increasingly difficult to maintain a traditional Maasai lifestyle. But they are glad that their sacrifice really makes a difference.
【1】What did Kasaine learn on his way to school and back home?
A. The beauty and risk of the wildlife.
B. The method of telling different plants.
C. The skills of telling different paw prints.
D. The lifestyle of a traditional Maasai family.
【2】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The lion. B. The path.
C. The reserve. D. The group.
【3】Why is Kenya making efforts to protect wildlife?
A. To improve the nation’s economy.
B. To offer more jobs to the local people.
C. To show the importance of the “big five”.
D. To set a good example to other countries.
【4】What do we know from the fifth paragraph?
A. The lions in Kenya are in danger of dying out.
B. The number of species declined seriously in 2016.
C. The nation’s economy is experiencing a very hard period.
D. Species in Kenya decreased every year in the recent ten years.
【5】How does Kasaine feel about his sacrifice?
A. Unpleasant. B. Hopeful.
C. Doubtful. D. Worthwhile.
