Nowadays, it is very easily to find a student who is nearsighted. What's worse, the number of nearsighted students are still increasing. From my point of view, there are many reason that can cause nearsightedness. First of all, the wrong posture will result from nearsightedness. Read in the dark places can lead to nearsightedness as well as. Moreover, too much reading without a rest can be other important reason. My dear friends, it is high time that we paid attention to protect our eyes. The most useful method is do eye exercises more often and relax for a while after reading. Watching green trees could also do good to the eyes.

We all love bank holidays. In the UK, we only get eight bank holidays in one year, and at least five of those occur around Christmas time and Easter time! A bank holiday is a British English term. This is an official day that is decided by the government, when banks, shops and offices close for the day even though it's a weekday—usually a Monday, and a lot of people have a day off work.

Bank holidays are different in Colombia—firstly, they are called “festivos”. There are twenty festivos for the whole country in one year! In Britain ,people get more holiday allowance(津贴)than Colombians but fewer bank holidays. There can be even more festivos in Colombia, depending on which region of Colombia you live in. This is because different regions have their own holidays. For example, some regions have a patron saint(守护神) in their region, so they have an extra festivo to celebrate that saint.

However, there are some days that are national holidays for historical reasons. There is an Independence Day celebration on July 20 every year. This is just like Bastille Day in France on July 14, or Independence Day in the United States on July 4. Other important festivos in Colombia are :Labour Day, on May 1, and Columbus Day on October 12. Columbus Day is a historical bank holiday that almost every county on the continent of America celebrates. This includes Colombia, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Mexico and the United States. It is a memorialization of the day that the Italian sailor, Christopher Columbus, first reached land on the continent in the year 1492. Many people criticize this day and say it is not something to celebrate because of the way Columbus and his teams treated the people that were already living there.

  1. (1) What is a “bank holiday” according to the text?
A . An official nationwide vacation. B . A holiday only for the bank staff. C . A British traditional religion festival. D . A celebration for Christmas and Easter.
  2. (2) What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A . Colombia and Britain have the same number of festivos. B . All Colombians have the same number of festivos. C . Colombians have less holiday allowance than British people. D . People in most regions celebrate a patron saint.
  3. (3) Why do many Americans refuse to celebrate Columbus Day ?
A . Because Columbus wasn't an American at all. B . Because Columbus once treated the locals badly. C . Because it wasn't Columbus that found America first. D . Because Columbus didn't live in the continent of America.
  4. (4) What is the text mainly about?
A . A British English term. B . Bank holidays in Colombia. C . Important festivos in America. D . Different bank holidays in the world.

The bicycling craze came in when we were just about at the right age to enjoy it. At first even "safety" bicycles were too dangerous and improper for ladies to ride, and they had to have tricycles. My mother had (I believe) the first female tricycle in Cambridge; and I had a little one, and we used to go out for family rides all together; my father in front on a bicycle, and my poor brother Charles standing miserable on the bar behind my mother. I found it very hard work, pounding(轰隆隆行进) away on my hard tyres; a glorious, but not a pleasurable pastime.

Then, one day at lunch, my father said he had just seen a new kind of tyre, filled up with air, and he thought it might be a success. And soon after that everyone had bicycles, ladies and all; and bicycling became the smart thing, and the lords and ladies had their pictures in the papers, riding along in the park, in straw boater hats(硬草帽).

My mother must have fallen off her bicycle pretty often, for I remember seeing the most appalling cuts and bruises(青肿) on her legs. But she never complained, and always kept these mishaps(灾祸) to herself. However, the great Mrs Phillips, our cook, always knew all about them; as indeed she knew practically everything that ever happened. She used to draw us into the servants' hall to tell us privately:"Her Ladyship had a nasty fall yesterday; she cut both her knees and sprained her wrist. But don't let her know I told you. "So we never dared to say anything. Similar little accidents used to occur when, at the age of nearly seventy, she insisted on learning to drive a car. She never mastered the art of reversing(倒车), and was in every way an unconventional and terrifying driver. Mrs Phillips used to tell us:"Her Ladyship ran into the back of a milk-cart yesterday; but it wasn't much hurt"; or "A policeman stopped her Ladyship because she was on the wrong side of the road; but she said she didn't know what the white line on the road meant, so he explained and let her go on. "Mrs Phillips must have had an excellent Intelligence Service at her command, for the stories were always true enough.

  1. (1) According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
A . Bicycling demanded too much hard work for women. B . Bicycling was considered unsafe and unladylike then. C . Women preferred to ride tricycles because tricycles could carry young children as well. D . Tricycles were more convenient for women to ride.
  2. (2) What made it possible for bicycling to become popular among women?
A . The writer's father popularized it. B . Air-filled tyres began to be used. C . Noble people started enjoying it. D . Newspapers had pictures of cyclists.
  3. (3) What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph imply?
A . Mrs Phillips served as a spy as well as a cook. B . Mrs Phillips was in command of all the servants as an Intelligence Service. C . Mrs Phillips was the most knowledgeable cook they had ever met. D . Mrs Phillips had an outstanding ability to gather information.
  4. (4) The writer's mother was stopped by a policeman one day because       .
A . she failed to follow the road system B . she was too old as a driver then C . she could not control the car D . she behaved too proudly

Last month, a study was published that examined climate change's direct effects on Earth's seasons. Scientists found a connection between climate change and the temperature and duration of the summer season. If left unaccounted for, summers in the Northern Hemisphere could last nearly six months by the year 2100 if global warming continues in its tracks, according to the study. With the seasons off-balance, it will further domino with harmful effects for human health and agriculture.

Yuping Guan, a physical oceanographer at the State Key Laboratory of Tropical Oceanography at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his colleagues combined daily climate data from 1952-2011 to get a sense of the start and end of each season in the Northern Hemisphere. Over a nearly 60-year period, they discovered that summers grew, on average 78 to 95 days long, while winters on average shortened from 76-73 days. The spring and autumn seasons also reduced. Guan and his team used the findings from the data to create a model to hypothesize(假设)how the seasons can possibly change in the future. They found that if left untouched summers in the Northern Hemisphere could last nearly six months, while winters could deplete to less than two months.

If Earth's seasons continue to shift, it brings negative risk among human health and agriculture. Longer and hotter summers, for example, can cause mosquitoes and other disease-carrying insects to potentially "expand" their scope and land in places they're usually not found. "Because seasons influence the life cycles of plants and animals, climate change could disrupt species' ability to adapt. Scott Sheridan, a climate scientist also added, "If seasons start changing, everything isn't going to change perfectly as they should. If we take an example of flowers coming out of the ground, those flowers could come out, but bees aren't there to pollinate (授粉) yet or they're already past their peak." With negative effects like these, human health and agriculture face hardships moving forward.

This study further demonstrates how harsh climate change is on humans, plants and animals, reminding us how much we are all connected within the environment we share.

  1. (1) What did scientists find according to the study?
A . Some seasons will disappear in their tracks. B . Global warming will be at its worst in 2100. C . Climate change affects how long summers last. D . Human health remains unharmed by climate change.
  2. (2) What does the underlined word "deplete" in the second paragraph mean?
    A . Extend. B . Add. C . Keep. D . Shorten.
  3. (3) What can we infer about the effects of longer and hotter summers?
A . Mosquitoes can survive in more places. B . The environment will change as we wish. C . Human health and agriculture are hardly affected. D . Some species are more able to adapt to the change.
  4. (4) Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A . Is the earth getting warmer? B . Is summer taking over all seasons? C . Are climate changes affecting humans? D . Are humans to blame for longer summers?

Cultural Center Adds Classes for Young Adults

The Allendale Cultural Center has expanded its arts program to include classes for young adults. Director Leah Martin announced Monday that beginning in September, three new classes will be offered to the Allendale community. The course titles will be Yoga for Teenagers; Hip Hop Dance: Learning the Latest Moves; and Creative Journaling for Teens: Discovering the Writer Within. The latter course will not be held at the Allendale Cultural Center but instead will meet at the Allendale Public Library.

Staff member Tricia Cousins will teach the yoga and hip hop classes. Ms. Cousins is an accomplished choreographer (舞蹈教师) as well as an experienced dance educator. She has an MA in dance education from Teachers College, Columbia University, where she wrote a thesis on the pedagogical (教学法的) effectiveness of dance education. The journaling class will be taught by Betsy Milford. Ms. Milford is the head librarian at the Allendale Public Library as well as a columnist for the professional journal Library Focus.

The courses are part of the Allendale Cultural Center’s Project Teen, which was initiated by Leah Martin, Director of the Cultural Center. According to Martin, this project is a direct result of her efforts to make the center a more essential part of the Allendale community. Over the last several years, the number of people who have visited the cultural center for classes or events has steadily declined. Project Teen is primarily funded by a generous grant from The McGee Arts Foundation, an organization devoted to bringing arts programs to young adults. Martin oversees the Project Teen board, which consists of five board members. Two board members are students at Allendale’s Brookdale High School; the other three are adults with backgrounds in education and the arts.

The creative journaling class will be cosponsored by Brookdale High School, and students who complete the class will be given the opportunity to publish one of their journal entries in Pulse, Brookdale’s student literary magazine. Students who complete the hip hop class will be eligible to participate in the Allendale Review, an annual concert sponsored by the cultural center that features local actors, musicians, and dancers. All classes are scheduled to begin immediately following school dismissal, and transportation will be available from Brookdale High School to the Allendale Cultural Center and the Allendale Public Library. For more information about Project Teen, contact the cultural center’s programming office at 988-0099 or drop by the office after June 1 to pick up a fall course catalog. The office is located on the third floor of the Allendale Town Hall.

47.  Which of the following statements is correct?
A. Tricia Cousins will teach two of the new classes.
B. The new classes will begin on June 1.
C. People who want a complete fall catalogue should stop by the Allendale Public Library.
D. The cultural center’s annual concert is called Pulse.

48.  According to Leah Martin, what was the direct cause of Project Teen?
A. Tricia Cousins was available to teach courses in the fall.
B. Community organizations were ignoring local teenagers.
C. The McGee Arts Foundation wanted to be more involved in Allendale’s arts programming.
D. She wanted to make the cultural center a more important part of the Allendale community.

49.  Which of the following factors is implied as another reason for Project Teen?
A. The number of people visiting the cultural center has declined over the last several years.
B. The cultural center wanted a grant from The McGee Arts Foundation.
C. The young people of Allendale have complained about the cultural center’s offerings.
D. Leah Martin thinks classes for teenagers are more important than classes for adults.

50.  This article is organized in which of the following ways?
A. In time order, from the past to the future.
B. Most important information first, followed by background and details.
C. Background first, followed by the most important information and details.
