Happiness is what everyone looks for.   41   someone says that he is happy. However,   42  makes him happy may not work for others. And even  43   , someone may spend all his life looking for happiness, but in vain.

In the past, I tried my best to make myself happy. I thought if I could   44   get and do what I wanted to,  I would be happy. Certainly, it was  45   , but I was disappointed. Though I could be happy at   46   , I couldn’t keep my happiness for a long time. Why?

One day, when I told a friend of mine what I   47   about happiness, he smiled and said only a few words “Happiness is not a   48   thing but a by-product ( 副产品). ”

I was surprised, but he was really   49  . Someone thinks money can   50   everything, but when he becomes a millionaire after his hard work, perhaps he will find that he has new   51  .  And he has to go to church for   52  . Sometimes love can bring happiness, but at other times it   53   misunderstanding,  tiredness and even quarrelling.

Happiness is only a by-product of all   54   of things you love to do. You can not    55   it in a straight way. That is, it is not a thing   56   in the material form but in your senses.

You should tell yourself, “I do not   57   whether I am happy or not. But I must love     58   ”.  And one day you will   59   find happiness itself has quietly   60   .

As is known to us. The year 2016 has one extra day in it ——February 29th.This is because it’s 61 we call“a leap year”.Every four years .the year has 366 days in  62  instead of 365.

It is called a leap year because hundred of so ago in England ,the extra day wasn’t   63 legalrecognized .there is a well-known tradition in the UK  64 associatewith 29th  February ,introduced many centuries ago .women are allowed to break with tradition and propose (求婚)to their boyfriends on this day .this all started back no the   65 fivecentury ,when a famous lrish saint made a   66  (complain) that women had to wait too long for men to propose .according to the legend,Saint Patrick said any female dreaming of a proposal could ask her boyfriend to marry her on this additional day in February .this so-called tradition was6 67 (write )in law in the thirteenth century .Scotland passed a law allowing women to propose to men in a leap year .it was said that if the men refused .they had to pay a fine !

Now in 2016 .there are calls  68  February 29th to become a public holiday .some people believe that it should be an  69  (office)day off ,because no one gets  70  (many)payments for working an extra day in a leap year .for the moment though .the British still have to go to work on this day.

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say,“ My spoken English is poor.”_36I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.

First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. __37. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if you choose a positive attitude. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.

__.38Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn’t matter.__.39

The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.

Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor.__.40

AThe person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.

BThey may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time.

CObviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary.

DIf you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.

EHowever, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”!

FSecond, they are afraid of making mistakes.

GThe second reason lies in the reluctance of using what has just been learned

The Iranian-American Maz Jobrani knew early in life that he wanted to become an actor or a comedian. Jobrani came to California with his parents from Iran when he was six and attended school there. His introduction to acting was an experience of trying out for a school play. “When I was 12, I tried out for the school play and fell in love with the stage...” said Jobrani, “I have friends who were funnier than I was!”

Jobrani tried an ordinary career path, studying political science in college and even starting a Ph.D. Program at UCLA. But the comedy of Eddie Murphy was a more powerful influence. “I’m a comedian because I’m a fan of comedy. I love watching comedy and I believe I discovered Eddie Murphy probably by watching “Saturday Night Live” and just then I wanted to be like Eddie Murphy,” Jobrani said.

Now as a full-time comedian, Maz Jobrani uses comedy to bridge the cultural divide. His performances both laugh at extremism and challenge American bias(偏见)of Muslims. And his recent movie does the same. He co-wrote and started in “Jimmy Vestvood: American Hero.”

“The movie is about a man who loves America, who wins the green card coming to America from Iran. He wants to be a policeman. But once he comes to America, he realizes America doesn’t accept immigrants(移民)the way he thought they would and the only job he can find is working as a security guard(保安)and from there he has to go on to save the world.”

“This comedy has a message of showing Iranians in a very different light, a fun light that most Americans aren’t used to seeing,” he said. For example, he feared when he first heard the phrase “axis of evil,” which is used to describe such countries as Iran. But he soon realized it could also make a great name for a series of shows. So, in 2005, the “Axis of Evil Comedy” Tour came. The shows featured Jobrani and three other comedians of Middle Eastern descent(血统).The group first appeared on the American television channel Comedy Central.

It’s a good feeling when you realize it’s working. It’s the worst when you’re doing stand-up (单人说笑表演的)comedy and the audience doesn’t relate to you. But their laugh is like a drug keeping feeding you. It’s kind of like I were surfing. So whether it’s doing stand-up comedy or putting on a movie, your goal as a comedian is to make people laugh.

28. By introducing his comedian career, Jobrani tends to tell us that ________.

A. he is actually a born comedian

B. Americans’ lifestyle makes him a comedian

C. Eddie Murphy has a great influence on him

D. Murphy’s plays made him first like comedy

29. What do you know about Jobrani’s film “American Hero”?

A. It is all about his personal experiences.

B. It is about Iranians who are against Americans.

C. It mainly plays a joke on the US immigrant policy.

D. It makes fun of American bias of Muslims.

30. What do you learn about the “Axis of Evil Comedy” Tour?

A. It turns what’s frightening into something funny.

B. It is performed by Jobrani and two Iranians.

C. It blames the US’ unfriendly attitude to Iran.

D. It didn’t work well at the very beginning.

31. To comedians, ________.

A. stand-up comedy is difficult to perform.

B. the audience’s laughter is their power.

C. doing stand-up comedy is just like surfing.

D. they have a long journey to become famous.

It was a late Wednesday night when the dreading phone call reached our home. I sat up, so I could hear the phone call better. To my surprise, I heard my mom burst into tears. "Get the carDean! Andrea has been in a car accident. "
We ran every stop sign on the way to the hospital and our tires screeched around every corner. We got to the hospital, but were not allowed to see Andrea. The next morning, after wearing masks, we were allowed to go to the ICU to see Andrea. Well, the least I could say was that everything was injured in her body and she lost all of her memories. It was a fatal accident.
Over the next two months, I lived more at the hospital than I did at my house. I watched as Andrea worked so hard to gain back everyday motor skills. She never once complained or pitied herself; her determined spirit was shining through. After two weeks in the ICU and two months of the regular hospital treatment, Andrea was able to come home. She missed several months of school, so it was hard for her to catch up. Andrea had tasks to accomplish, and no matter how hard it was, she stuck with them until the job was done. Though busy with dealing with pain and therapy, she always found time to love and play with me.
I'll never forget the impact that this incident made on my life. I admire her strong-willed personality and her determined spirit. Today she is perfectly normal
despite the scars and the pins holding her leg in place. I couldn't ask for a better sister, hero, or best friend
28.The writer sat up to hear the call because he ______
A. sensed that something terrible had happened

B. expected to get the phone call

C. wanted to scold the people who phoned so late

D. was not sure whether the telephone concerned him

29.From the underlined sentence in the second paragraph
we can infer that ______
A. the family did not obey the traffic rules

B. the writer's father was not good at driving

C. the whole family were too anxious to see Andrea

D. their house was very far from the hospital

30. During the treatment, Andrea ______
A. had to give up all her studies
B. stopped playing with the writer

C. refused to be accompanied

D. showed unbelievable strength

31.What would be the best title for the passage

A. A Miracle Happening to my sister
B. My Sister----the Hero in My Life
C. An Accident Which Changed My Sister
D. An Incident Which Influenced Me Much

In the United States, 30 percent of the adult population has a weight problem. To many people, the cause is obvious: we eat too much. But scientific evidence does little to support this idea. Going back to the America of 1910, we find that people were leaner than today, yet they ate more food. In those days people worked hard physically, walked more, used machines much less, and didn’t watch television.

Several modern studies, moreover, have shown that fatter people do not eat more on the average than thinner people. In fact, some investigations, such as a 1979 study of 3,545 London office workers, report that, on balance, fat people eat less than slimmer people.

Studies show that slim people are more active than fat people. A study by a research group at Stanford University School of Medicine found the following interesting fact: The more the man ran, the greater loss of the body fat. The more they ran, the greater increase in food intake.

Thus, those who ran most ate most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.

1. What kind of physical problem do many adult Americans have?

A. They are too fat    B. They work too hard

C. They are too slim          D. They lose too much body fat

2. Based upon the statistics given in the article, suppose there are 5000 adult Americans, about how many of them will have a “weight problem”?

A. 1500     B. 1000     C. 1200     D. 1800

3. In comparison with the adult American population today, the Americans of 1910________.

A. ate less food but had more activities         B. ate more food and had physical activities

C. ate less food and had less physical exercise        D. had more weight problems

4. What have medical and scientific researches reported to us?

A. Thin people run less, but have greater increase in food intake,

B. Fat people eat more food than slim people and are more active.

C. Fat people eat more food than slim people but are less active.

D. Fat people eat less food and are less active.

Speaking in public is most people’s least favorite thing. The reason is that we are all afraid of making fools of ourselves.     36    .

But stop biting your finger-nails. Public speaking is easy. It’s just plain talking, and you talk all the time. Although I’m basically shy (honest!), I’ve been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more than 30 years, and I can tell you that public speaking is not a “gift” like musical talent or being able to draw.     37   . Here are some of the lessons I have learned:

Keep it simple. Your audience is going to come away with one or two of your main ideas. One or two. Not ten or twenty.     38   . And if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to say, there’s no way your audience will.

Get organized.     39     —how you are going to open, what major points you want to make and how you’re going to close.

When I do a radio or TV piece, I often write the last sentence first.    40   . A strong close is critical: the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember.

Keep it short. The standard length of a vaudeville act(杂耍) is usually 12 minutes. If all those performers singing and dancing their hearts out couldn’t go on longer without boring the audience, what makes you think you can?

     A. Some people are born to be good at making speech

     B. Anybody who can talk can speak in public

     C. Try to relax yourself before making the speech

     D. The more important the speech is, the more frightened we become

     E. If you can’t express in a sentence or two what you intend to express, then your speech is not focused well enough

     F. When you know where you’re headed, you can choose any route to get there

   G. No matter how long or short your speech is, you’ve got to get your ducks in a row

Maybe you are an average(一般的) student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:

16         When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule(计划) of your time. First your time for eating , sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying.( Don’t forget to set aside(留出) enough time for entertainment. A weekly(每周的) schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force(强迫) you realize what is happening to your time.

17         . Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but(除了) study materials(材料). No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on(集中精力) the subject.

18         There are other methods that might help you with your studying. Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

19         . When you get home from school, go over (复习)your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful(有意义的), and you’ll remember it longer.

20         . The purpose(目的)of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over-- worried.

A.Study regularly.
