They planned weeks ahead of time, asking 47 what they wanted for Christmas. Fortunately, I had saved $120 for 48 to share by all five of us.
The big 49 arrived. I gave each kid a twenty-dollar bill and 50 them to look for gifts of about four dollars each. Then everyone scattered(散开). We had two hours to shop; then we would 51 back at the “Santa’s Workshop”.
Driving home, everyone was in high Christmas spirits, 52 my younger daughter, Ginger, who was unusually 53 . She had only one small, flat bag with a few candies — fifty-cent candies! I was so angry, but I didn’t say anything 54 we got home. I called her into my bedroom and closed the door, 55 to be angry again. This is what she told me.
“I was looking 56 thinking of what to buy, and I 57 to read the little cards on the ‘Giving Trees.’ One was for a little girl, four years old, and all she 58 for Christmas was a doll(玩具娃娃). So I took the card off the tree and 59 the doll for her. We have so much and she doesn’t have anything.”
I never felt so 60 as I did that day.

Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart. They will in a lifetime, push the chromeplated_contraptions many miles. But few
will know—or even think to ask—who it was that invented them.
Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that time he was in the supermarket business. Every day he would see shoppers lugging groceries around in baskets they had to carry.
One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business.
On June 4, 1937, Goldman’s first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn’t wait to see them using his invention.
But Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try.
After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren’t using his carts.“Don’t you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket?”one shopper replied.
But Goldman wasn’t beaten yet. He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try. To this end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony (假的) customers.
As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. But not only did more people come — those who came bought more. With larger easiertohandle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.
Today’s shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman’s original model. Perhaps that’s one reason why Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did before 1937—the coming of the shopping cart.

On the morning of 16th July, we went to a lecture about Pompeii. 38 in the 8th century BC, the city was taken over by the Romans and then became a rich city. 39 , it was destroyed by a volcano, together with all the people in the city. The next day, I was amazed to see the ancient Roman city of Pompeii 40 it was 2,000 years ago. When I walked around the city, I saw streets, stepping stones, several houses with wall paintings, and 41 the bodies of people that had been turned to stone.
On 24th July, we arrived in Loulan after several days of travelling. I ate 42 the noodles nor the rice because I was too tired to eat. Loulan, a small 43 wealthy commercial city, existed almost 2,000 years ago. It disappeared under the sand. No one is quite sure why. There are a few ruins left. Some 44 , such as coins and painted pots, was found.
I am becoming very 45 in ancient civilizations. Maybe I shall become an archaeologist.

When going through major life changes, like changing careers, I would change the people with whom I spent the most time. We’ve all gone through periods when the people in our lives have changed—graduation, moving to a new city, getting a new job, joining a new club, etc. I don’t think I need to convince you just how much influence other people can have over your identity. If you’ve ever experienced a major switch in your people environment, then you know that you change as well.
Most people don’t make these choices consciously though. You might consciously decide to spend more time with a certain friend, or you may ask someone out on a date to begin a new relationship. But few people choose their existing friendships deliberately.
There’s no “getting rid of people”. People are always dropping into and out of each other’s lives. Associations grow into friendships, and friendships fade into associations. You don’t get rid of anyone. The truth is that in order to make room for new people and new experiences, you may need to loosen up some of your existing connections.
What about loyalty? Shouldn’t you always be loyal to your friends? Once you have a close friend, even if their influence on you is slightly harmful, shouldn’t you stick by them?
Loyalty to a friend sometimes means having to let go. It means being loyal to their highest and best as well. If someone is destroying his health by smoking, for example, you aren’t showing loyalty by smoking right along with him. True loyally sometimes requires that you break damaging connections, get yourself back on solid ground, and then decide what you can really do to help your friend.
It can take a lot of courage to tell someone, “I’m sorry, but I can’t have you in my life anymore." But even though this might seem like a selfish act at times, it’s often the best thing for the other person too. If a relationship is holding you back in some way, understand that it is also hurting the other person. For example, if you work for a violent boss, your acceptance of that situation is considered to be silent approval, encouraging your boss to continue to behave violently.
1.When experiencing major life changes, people may ________.

2.What can be concluded from Paragraph 3 in the passage?
A.Everyone has at least one friend.
B.Friendship still exists though there’s less connection.

3.What is the author’s opinion on the loyalty to friends?
A.Never betray your close friends whatever happens.
B.Correct their mistakes while you guard their goodness.
C.Stick by your friends even though they do harm lo you.
D.Break up with your friends immediately if they smoke.
4.How should we behave when employed by a violent boss?
A.We should accept what we are told to do.
B.We should stay silent and be in favor of it.
C.We should bravely disobey him if he is wrong.
D.We should give our boss courage to continue.

Last year I went to America and stayed there with an American family for two months.
As is said, “The best house is in America, the best wife is in Japan, and the best food is in China.” So I 41 pride and pleasure to 42 “the best food” for my American family. Each day, regardless of my poor skill of cooking, I would do something in a 43 way: changing the dishes color, the meat’s type or the soup’s style. Thus, my American friends could discover the 44 of eating Chinese food. Because of my “ 45 ” job, I was often rewarded by their 46 of thanks such as “very delicious”, “excellent”, etc.
47 something funny happened yesterday when I cooked Sichuan style fish for dinner. I was 48 with my work.
When the whole family sat round the table, they first looked 49 at the fish, then looked at me. “Why do all the fish have their 50 ?” they asked,“It’s terrible!”
51 or terrible?I can’t understand. But I do know that fish heads are delicious. The head is the 52 part of fish; in 53 only the important guest can have the 54 of enjoying it.
Another 55 thing is: the American friends often said to me“ 56 ”as they 57 home fruits or other things. According to Chinese tradition I would simply smile in answer to their kindness 58 actually helping myself to any of the food. 59 , I said “help yourself” to them whenever I brought home fruits. Dear me! No matter how much or how often I brought home food, as long as it was nice to their taste, they 60 hesitated (犹豫) to use their hands to “help themselves” until all was finished.

To be successful in any aspect of life, you need to know when to use the carrot or the stick.
Here are a few tips to help you decide whether it’s better to use the carrot or the stick.
l With the kids
The carrot
When it comes to raising a kid, the carrot or the stick dilemma is quickly disappearing as too many parents take the carrot approach to the extreme. In child raising, the carrot should never be materialistic things. If you want to ask for good behavior with a reward, it should be with something that can’t be bought, say, trust.
The stick
Nowadays, no one likes to use the stick any more, or in my father’s case, the belt. I’m not overlooking child abuse, if you ever want to call it that, but I am encouraging parents to toughen up a bit. You don’t want your kid to test your limits only to find out he can get away with it. If you want to raise a kid, raise the hand and let him know it comes down on the second offense.
l At the office
The carrot
People need encouragement and motivation to perform well. However, the carrot only really works well with employees who have already proved themselves. If you’ve got someone who can’t show up at the office before noon, the promise of a raise isn’t going to do much. On the contrary, if there’s a guy with a good work moral, he’ll thrive (grow stronger) when you add a promotion to the picture.
The stick
When considering the carrot or the stick in the office, remember that, overall, the stick is the more practical method in the office. A wise man, who just happened to be an Italian, once said “It’s best to be both loved and feared.” It’s nice to have everyone love you, but running a business isn’t like running a family. You need to have the stick constantly raised.
l With the wife
The carrot
When it comes to marriage, always use the carrot. I’ve had a lovely marriage for many years, and I’ve always stuck to the carrot approach.
Sometimes you catch more flies with honey, and sometimes it’s the crack of a whip (鞭子) that gets the horse moving. Try not to use too many sticks at home; the carrot is much more fun.
