We have talked about snails(蜗牛) and their slow move. But much of the time nails don’t move at all. They are in their shells--- sleeping.
Hot sun will dry out a snail’s body. So at the least sign of hot sun, a snail draws its body into its shell. A snail will die in a heavy rain. So when it rains, a snail does the same thing, too. A snail can sleep for as long as it needs to. It spends all the winter months in its shell, asleep.
In spring the snail wakes up. Its body, about three inches long, comes out of the shell. When hungry, the snail looks for food. Its eyes, at the end of the top feelers(触角), are very weak. But its sense(感觉) of smell is very strong. It helps the snail to find food and new greens.
A snail’s mouth is no bigger than the point of a pin(大头针). Yet it has 256,000 teeth! The teeth are very small, and you can’t see them. If you put a snail in a hard paper box, it will eat its way out! And if a snail wears out its teeth, it will grow new ones.

There are several ways from which to choose for you to keep your kids safe in your neighborhood. But the first step to keep your child safe in your neighborhood is to know your neighbors.
Knowing your neighbors can save you a lot of worry. It lets you know that the car that has just driven down the street belongs to “the yellow house on the corner”, or the truck that has just driven by the playground looks unfamiliar, but the guy in the passenger seat resides two doors down. It’s these simple things that keep you from going_out_of_your_mind whenever you see someone driving by where children are playing.
But you shouldn’t just know what they look like. The next step is to know them well. What do they do?How do they act?You might be OK with them driving by the playground since they live in the neighborhood, but are you OK with them being on the playground? Knowing your neighbors solves several things. First you find out what kind of people they are. This helps you know if you should let your child go out in an area where they gather. Let us face it: you do not want your child to play around people or people’s children that curse (咒骂) or hit each other. Sometimes you have to protect your child against your own neighbors.
Knowing them also makes them know you. Being neighbors is an interesting thing. You might not like them or have the same views as them, but we all usually protect those that we consider our own. If you know your neighbors, they know you. They are more likely to look after the child of the nice lady down the street in the brick (砖) house, than the people, in the house on the corner, who no one ever sees.
54. This passage is mainly to tell us________.
A. how to keep your child safe in the neighborhood

C. how to get along with your neighbors
D. how to teach your child to protect himself
55. If someone resides two doors down, he________.
A. studies at the same school with your kid
B. often comes to the neighborhood to offer help
C. lives in the same neighborhood as you

A. becoming very excited
B. becoming very worried
C. becoming very disappointed
D. becoming very relaxed
57. From the third paragraph we can know that________.
A. it is important for you to be polite to your neighbors
B. people in the same neighborhood are quite different
C. people like enjoying themselves on the playground
D. knowing your neighbors helps to keep your kids safe

If you have a cat,you already know that a cat isn't a dog that doesn't have to be walked. If you're about to bring a cat into your family, you need to understand that basic fact. The common wisdom is that dogs are friendlier than cats.
In recent years, scientists who have done DNA studies have offered a better way to understand cats.Unlike other animals that people feed, cats domesticated themselves, and,in a way, trained humans.Cats decided to live close to humans because doing so benefited the cats themselves.
Studies show that cats have lived with humans for about 12,000 years, since people first settled down and started farming. When people started storing grain, mice arrived and started eating the grain.Clever cats figured out that the mice settlements where people stored grain were easy for hunting,so they started hanging around.Cats did what they needed to do to get the people to let them stay, but they kept up their independence.Over time, cats allowed humans to get a bit closer to them.Later, the farmers did befriend the cats.Certainly,it didn't do them any harm because they could see that the cats were really helping them out by eating mice.
Today, about a third of American families have cats.In most of those homes, the cats are still more interested in pleasing themselves than in pleasing their human families.A dog may do anything it can to make you happy, but kitty will teach you to make kitty happy.

No one can tell you how to adjust to life in the United States. You must make the adjustment through experience, and sometimes, emotional distress. This is the way it usually happens.
First, of course, you experience a period of excitement. You have a sense of freedom—you feel liberated from the rules and customs of your own culture, and immensely interested in those of American culture. This period is sometimes called the “the honeymoon” stage.
Then certain customs in the United States began to irritate you. For example, we shall consider punctuality—the need to be “on time”. Americans look at their watches frequently. They try to be on time for work, for class, for meetings, for games, for religious services, and even for certain events. If you arrange to meet Americans for lunch at 12 but to be there at 12:30, you will probably find that they have either (a) left (b) eaten without you, or (c) become very annoyed (even if they are not hungry).
Perhaps you are annoyed that American friendliness seems superficial; or that Americans always act as though they are in a hurry; or that the food never seems to be prepared in the right way. Perhaps you do not even feel annoyed, just homesick. The reaction can set in within two weeks of your arrival, or six months later, and its symptoms vary greatly. You might have trouble sleeping; you might on the other hand sleep too much. You might find yourself angry at the time, or depressed, or suffering from a vague physical illness. You may begin to dislike the United States and its people.
Nothing is really wrong with you. You are simply suffering cultural shock. You have a lot of familiar signs and signals, you have discovered that some of your assumptions about human beings are incorrect, and you wish you could make sense of the United States. Then another change comes over you. Sooner or later you begin to laugh at yourself or at the strange things you see in American life, and at that point you begin to recover. Soon, you find yourself living, peacefully, with the same American customs that used to upset you. You have become bicultural.
24. Which of the following makes newcomers in the United States very angry?
A. Americans’ punctuality and superficial friendliness.
B. Americans’ complaint.
C. Americans’ education.
D. Americans’ impatience.
25. The following are the possible symptoms of cultural shock EXCEPT _____.
A. sleeping difficulty B. sleeping too much
C. a vague physical illness D. a dislike for one’s own culture
26. According to the passage, which of the following is the best way of surviving in the United States?
A. By ignoring the differences. B. By becoming bicultural.
C. By becoming an American . D. By forgetting one’s own culture.
27. Which of the following best summarizes the passage?
A. Life in the United States.
B. Customs in the United States.
C. Causes and symptoms of cultural shock.
D. Traveling in the United States.
