It is interesting to know what people of different nations like to be best.
In France, when a woman enters a café or restaurant, she is freely discussed, not only about her appearance but about her past and future as well. She invites looks in the street whether she is beautiful or plain. There is no better way for a woman to get back her self-confidence than a walk in the streets of Paris or Marseilles, and woman really like that.
In Italy, people love talking. They sit about in cafes, exchanging news and discussing politics. They do not hesitate to ask questions about the family, income and private life of anybody who happens to be there.
The Swiss eat as a pastime. Ladies walk into a teashop, eat a couple of ice creams and a large piece of chocolate cake, and then leave, complaining about their weight.
For the Americans, the greatest fondness is said to be the push of buttons. You push a button in the lift, you push a button for cigarette, chewing gums, stamps, even for a life insurance. You can even push a button to get married and another button to get divorced.
In England, waiting in a line is national passion. The English will form a line whether they have the opportunity or not. Long queues can be seen, for example, at stations when the train is practically empty and everybody can have a seat.

One day, I was teaching my daughter how to paint. I saw that a lot of her energy went into 41 her brush into the paint, and then into a bowl of water. But then most of the paint that was on the 42 would just disappear in the water. As an 43 mother, I was thinking, “I am trying to teach you how to paint on paper and what are you doing? This is not what you are 44 to do. You have to do this way.”
But she is three years old so she is probably not going to 45 doing it the right way. She had so much 46 dipping the brush in the paint and in the water bowl. Pretty much within an hour, most of the paint was all over the room and I just sat there with my hands 47 my head thinking, “Oh my god, this girl is hopeless.” Soon after, however, she shouted, “Mama, when I 48 pink and blue, it turns purple!”
I was surprised. 49 I was thinking that she was wasting perfectly good paint and paper, she 50 learned something. What would have been a very theoretical(理论的) experiment turned into a very 51 experiment.
I am a designer and work with software like Photoshop and Illustrator. When my daughter sees me work on the 52 , she is always very curious and she wants to work with me on the same thing that I do. She starts to 53 with buttons, and in that process, sometimes lands up 54 me things! There will be many times when she will find 55 new. I will ask her 56 , and she will tell me, “I pressed this, and I pressed this, and then this happened.”
One of the things I realized from this is that everyone has a(n) 57 way of learning things. When I was growing up, I 58 to literature very well, so everything that was turned into a story became my way of learning and 59 different concepts. Some kids understand through art, some understand through math and games, and it’s the job of a parent or a teacher to watch and 60 how children learn and try their best to make these experiences educational.

China says 16 endangered finless porpoises (江豚) have been found dead since the beginning of the year and experts blame water pollution and climate change for pushing the species toward extinction (灭绝).
The freshwater porpoise — popularly known in Chinese as the “river pig” — mainly lives in China’s Yangtze River and two lakes linked to the river.
Authorities (官方) have discovered 10 dead porpoises in Dongting Lake in the central province of Hunan since March, according to a statement by the government of Yueyang City, which is located on the lake’s shore. Another six dead porpoises have been found in Poyang Lake in the eastern province of Jiangxi since the beginning of the year. Experts warn that the species will be extinct within a matter of years.
Wang Kexiong, a researcher at China’s Institute of Hydrobiology, said water pollution, shipping and sand dredging (挖掘) were all possible contributing factors to the recent deaths.
Many rivers in China have become heavily polluted with poisonous waste from factories and farms — pollution blamed on more than three decades of rapid economic growth and slow enforcement (实施) of environmental protection laws.
The report said climate change also could be to blame as the dry weather has caused water levels to drop and makes it more difficult for the porpoises to find food. Tests have shown that some of the porpoises are believed to have died of starvation.
In 2006, China was estimated (估计) to have only 1,200 finless porpoises left. That same year, the Baiji — a freshwater dolphin also native to the Yangtze River — was declared extinct. Earlier this year, a survey found just 65 “river pigs” in Dongting Lake and 300-400 in Poyang Lake.
Following the recent deaths, Yueyang City promised to investigate and increase protection of the remaining porpoises in Dongting Lake.

“Hello, Earth! Can you hear me?” That’s voice more than 400,000 people received recently. It was from Philae, a space vehicle that landed on a comet(彗星)in 2014. However, its transmissions (传输信号)back home went silent since then.
It took a 1ong time for Philae to make its way across the solar system (太阳系)and reach comet 67P/C-G. The pace vehicle got there aboard the Rosetta probe (探测器), which has been circling around the comet since Philae separated from it in November, 2014.
Philae’s job was to collect materials to study the comet’s composition. And for about two and a half days after landing, it did just that, sending the information back to scientists on Earth. But Philae’s landing on the comet’s icy surface had not been smooth. While touching down, it jumped up and ended up in the shadow of something like a huge rock. Philae runs on solar power, but there was no light in the place where it landed. In the end, it failed to work.
However,as comet 67P/C-G moved closer to the sun, more sunlight reached the space vehicle, allowing it to power up and come back online. Philae then sent something to Rosetta, which passed on the information back to Earth.
“We only received the information for about 85 seconds, but that’s enough to let us know it is alive and well,”says Stephan Ulamec, who works for the European Space Agency.“We hope to work out where it landed exactly on the 4-kilometer-wide comet. Now we plan to change how Rosetta moves so that Philae can keep on communicating and receiving instructions.”

Mary died in October, 2013, whom devoted her whole life to taking care of the homeless. In honor of her, her friend Luke made up his minds to do a good deed every day for a year. He did all that he can to help others. He took out of rubbish for his elderly neighbors. He baked bread and sent them to his friends. He even bought meals for completely strangers. He spent $3, 000 on good deeds, although he was only part-time worker. Some people didn’t understand him, thought he wanted something in return. When hearing this, he said, "Honestly speaking, helping others can help ourselves but it makes us more grateful for that we have."

I’m fat . I’m too skinny. I’d be happy if I were taller, shorter, had curly hair, straight hair, a smaller nose, bigger muscles, longer legs. Do any of these statements sound familiar? Do you often put yourself down? If so, you’re not alone. As a teen, you’re going through a ton of changes in your body. And as your body changes, so does your image of yourself. Lots of people have trouble getting used to it, and this can affect their confidence.
Some people think they need to change how they look or act to feel good about themselves. But actually all you need to do is change the way you see your body and how you think about yourself.
The first thing to do is recognize that your body is your own, no matter what shape, size, or color it comes in. If you’re very worried about your weight or size, go to your doctor to check that things are OK. But it’s no one’s business but your own what your body is like — finally, you have to be happy with yourself.
Next, find which aspects (方面) of your appearance you can change and which you can’t. Everyone, even the most perfect-seeming celebrity (名人), has things about themselves that they can’t change and need to accept — like their height, for example, or their shoe size.
If there are things about yourself that you want to change and can, do this by making goals for yourself. For example, if you want to get fit, make a plan to exercise every day and eat nutritious foods.
When you hear negative comments coming from within yourself, tell yourself to stop. Try building your confidence by listing three things in your day that really gave you pleasure. It can be anything like the way the sun felt on your face, the sound of your favorite band, or the way someone laughed at your jokes.
60. From the first paragraph, we can infer that ______.
A. most teens like to have a special body image
B. many teens can’t accept their body changes easily
C. teens prefer to change their body image quickly
D. teens usually change their opinions on their body image
61. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?
A. Change the way other people look at you.
B. Go to your doctor for advice on how to change your body.
C. Learn from some celebrities on how to change your body.
D. Realize you can’t change everything about yourself.
62. The underlined phrase “put yourself down” in the first paragraph probably means ______.
A. make yourself fall down B. write down your name somewhere
C. force yourself to do something D. say negative things about yourself
63. The passage is mainly about ______.
A. how to adjust to the changes of your body B. how to build confidence by changing your body
C. how to keep an attractive body image D. how to find pleasure in your day
There have always been a lot of commonly believed but false ideas about being fat and doing exercise. Some people believe that they can’t help putting on weight as they get older, while others hold that if they stop exercising, their muscles will turn into fat. Here are some more myths:
I’ll never lose weight – I come from a fat family
Wrong! While we can’t change the body type we are born with, we can’t blame our genes for making us fat. There’s plenty of evidence that fatness runs in families, and the main reason is that they share the same habit of eating too much and exercise too little.
I am fat because I burn calories slowly
Wrong! Fatness is not caused by a slow metabolism (新陈代谢). In fact, although fat people consume more energy than slim people, they also fail to realize how much they eat. Keeping a diary can help you work out your daily food intake more accurately.
Exercise is boring
Wrong! Anything will become boring if you do it repetitively. The key is to develop a balanced and varied program that’s fun as well as progressive. If you enjoy a Sunday walk, take a different route. If you do yoga, try a tai chi class. If you like swiping, set yourself a distance or time challenge.
No pain, no gain
Wrong! Exercise is not meant to hurt. Indeed, pain is your body telling you something’s wrong, and continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury. You may experience mild discomfort as you begin to exercise regularly, but this is your body adapting to the positive changes in your lifestyle and the aches should disappear relatively quickly. If they don’t, rest and seek medical advice.
56. What does the author think about being fat?
A. It is the family genes that make people fat.
B. People are fat because they consume too little energy.
C. A diary of exercise can prevent people from becoming fat.
D. It is the consequence of people’s unbalanced lifestyle.
57. According to the author, how can we make exercise more interesting?
A. By taking varied exercise. B. By choosing simple exercise.
C. By doing regular exercise. D. By sticking to outdoor exercise.
58. What is the author’s opinion about “No pain, no gain” in exercising?
A. Keeping fit is essentially a painful experience.
B. Exercise should be stopped if continuous pain is felt.
C. Pain in exercise is a precondition for reaching your goal.
D. Getting used to pain leads to positive changes in your body.
59 . What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To declare the importance of keeping fit.
B. To clarify some misconceptions about fatness and exercise.
C. To confirm what has long been believed about keeping fit.
D. To explain some medical facts about being fat and doing exercise.
Where to eat
There are a number of different places to eat in the shopping center.
The Noodle House is small, but very popular. The noodle soup tastes very good, and the fried noodles with roast pork are delicious. Everything is clean and the staffs are friendly. Prices are good too, but you may have to wait quite a long time as the restaurant is so busy.
Roma is a new restaurant. It is very smart, but the pizzas here do not taste good. We didn’t eat our fish as it smelled bad. The waiters looked angry and we thought it was very expensive. This restaurant has to improve.
The Tokyo Restaurant has been here for many years, and the staffs bow to customers when they enter and are very kind. The fish is very fresh and most of the food is delicious. The amount of food you get is quite small, but it always looks nice on the plate.
The Golden Dragon is a large Chinese restaurant. It has a lot of different food. The sweet and sour pork is excellent, the Beijing Duck is famous, and the winter melon soup is good. Go there for a really good meal, but expect to pay a lot. Prices are high.
The Come in Coffee Shop is very modern. There are many sorts of coffee and if you like sweet things, wait until you taste their cakes and cookies! You can also have sandwiches —— I enjoyed the egg sandwiches a lot. They have modern music playing , but it is very noisy, so it is quite difficult to have a conversation.

You’ll find that some festivals are celebrated by an entire country, while others may be known only to a single city or region, but either way festivals play an important role in a certain culture. Just enjoy them!

For two weeks in July, millions gather in Boryeong to experience the grey pools and slides. Holi, the Festival of Colors, is a Hindu celebration full of joy and one of India’s most important holidays. During the day of the last full moon of the lunar month, usually late February or early March, the air is full of brightly colored powder (粉末). The festival is celebrated differently throughout the country, with bonfires and music, but the cheerful spirit is common among Hindu people around the world.
