A poor boy was selling goods from one door to another to pay for his studies. One day he found that he had almost no money, and he was hungry. So he decided to ask for a meal.

But when a woman opened the door, he only dared to ask for a glass of water. To his surprise, she gave him a large glass of milk. He drank it and then asked how much he should pay her. She said, “You don’t have to pay me anything. Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness” He was deeply moved and was determined to help those in need. The boy’s name was Howard Kelly.

Many years had passed. One day that woman became seriously ill. The local doctors could not help her. So they sent her to a big city where her rare (罕见的) disease would be studied by specialists (专家). Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for advice. When he entered her room in the hospital, he immediately spotted the woman. Howard Kelly was determined to do his best to help her.

The struggle was long, but together they succeeded in the end. After some time the woman received a bill for her treatment. She was worried that the amount would be so large that it would take the rest of her life to pay for it. However, when she looked at the bill, she found words on the side of the bill. They were, “Paid in full with a glass of milk.”

21. The woman came to a big city because .

       A. she was invited by a group of specialists to a study

    B. she was ill and no local doctors could help her

       C. she wanted to visit the poor boy whom she had helped

       D. her rare disease could only be dealt with by Dr. Howard Kelly

22. The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to .

       A. the bill for her treatment     B. a glass of milk

       C. her illness                 D. the rest of her life

23. What can we know about Howard Kelly according to the passage?

       A. He earned a lot of money.

       B. He opened his own hospital in the city.

       C. He was an experienced doctor.

       D. He became the best friend of the woman.

About whether to live in the city or the countryside my friends have different opinions. To avoid the noise, smog, traffic, and crime in the city, most of them are moving outside the city.

One friend says, “The air is heavily polluted in the city, so I prefer to live outside, where the air is clean.”

Another friend is unpleasant with the traffic, “Downtown is crowded with cars! You can’t find a parking place, and the traffic jams are terrible.” Everyone is worried about crime, “The city is full of criminals. ---it’s too dangerous.”

For them, the rural life is a cure for all problems, green grass, flowers, swimming pools, barbecues, and so on. Yet after they have lived there for a year or so, they realize that rural life is not so pleasant as they were expecting. Why? Their gardens! They soon learn that the main part of rural life is yard work. After they work all weekend in their gardens, they’re too tired to swim in their pools or cook some meat on their barbecues. And they can’t live in the countryside without a car. Most of them moved to the countryside to avoid traffic, but now they’re blocked on a busy freeway two hours every day to drive to work downtown.

My opinions about urban life are different---I love to live downtown! Why? First, in the city, I can enjoy nature. I can walk through the park, smell the flowers, sit on the grass and visit the animals in the zoo. Yet I don’t have to do yard work or feed the animals. Also, I can get everywhere by bus; if there is a traffic jam, I can walk home. I think the criminal life will reflect changes in society too; if people are buying homes outside the city, the criminals will soon follow. Criminals want to avoid noise, smog, and pollution, too. Then, overcrowding and crime will be problems of the suburbs instead of the city!

24. The first paragraph is used to ______ .

C. lead to the topic                                         D. give suggestions

26. What is the major problem for those who live in the countryside?

A. Being far from downtown.

B. Having gardens to take care of.

C. Failing to find parking lots.

D. Suffering heavy traffic on the road.

27. What’s the author’s attitude to his city life?

A. Approving.              B. Ambiguous.           C. Grateful.                D. Doubtful.

Polar bears are suffering in a   46  (warm) world than ever before.

Polar bears live in environments too cold for most animals.   47   much of the year, they live and hunt on the frozen Arctic sea ice. Nature has prepared  48  for the cold conditions. But nothing has prepared the bears  49  the danger that threatens the only home they know.

The polar bears’ world is melting. Studies show that the polar ice has reduced by 9.8% every 10 years   50   1978. Now about 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears live in the Arctic. Polar bears depend on the sea ice for their  51   (survive). “The sea ice is more than just this platform that the bears walk over,” says Andrew Derocher,   52   scientist who studies North American polar bear populations. “  53  it, they can’t exist.”

Some melting and refreezing of the polar ice is natural.  54  in a warmer world, these cycles speed up, and bears have less time to hunt. Normally, they have three months in the spring when they gain more weight. The extra fat is used later,    55   the bears are not actively hunting.

New Yorkers and visitors to the Big Apple will get to ring in the Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year in the U.S., in style with a fireworks display on the Hudson River set to music written by Academy Award-winning composer Tan Dun.

The display is part of the second annual “Happy Chinese New Year: Fantastic Art China” festival held in New York on February 5-10, 2016. The China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), the U.S.-China Cultural Institute and the Cultural Associate of the Committee of 100 announced this year’s events on November 18 at a press conference at the Lincoln Center.

The “Fantastic Art China” festival will feature a larger and more diverse series of artistic and cultural events across New York’s top cultural venues (地点) and landmarks, including the Lincoln Center, Empire State Building and Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

This year’s theme focuses on exploring the complicated relationship between sound and image, said Professor Yu Ding from CAFA, who is also president of Fantastic Art China and in charge of the festival’s design. Lunar New Year, which celebrates the “Year of the Monkey” in 2016, is an opportunity to bring China’s modern art to mainstream America, and the festival serves as  an innovative approach to establishing cultural exchange between China and New York City, Yu said.

UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Tan Dun’s music is a new edition that will be featured  at several venues, including a major art exhibition at the Javits Center, events at the Lincoln Center and the fireworks display on the Hudson, which will take place on the evening of February 6. Five barges (游艇) on the river will launch the fireworks designed by CAFA that will tell a story about celebration and conservation.

“We Chinese are fond of nature, so the best way to celebrate the Lunar New Year is to salute with the sounds of nature, such as sounds of water, stone and bamboo,” said Tan Dun at the press conference, “And it will be fun to use the music of water during the firework display.”

In addition to the fireworks, a special lighting show at the Empire State Building will illuminate New York City during the holiday.

Chinese New Year is being recognized as a public school holiday for the first time in New York. Children from the National Dance Institute, which represents 75 schools, will perform traditional Chinese dances at the Lincoln Center and the Javits Center. And, in celebration of the “Year of the Monkey” events will feature a conservation message about the endangered golden monkey in China.

28. The theme of this year’s celebration is centered on ________.

A. diversity of Chinese traditional festivals

B. relationship between sound and image of nature

C. endangered species and environment protection

D. cultural exchange between China and America

29. The coming “Year of the Monkey” is to be celebrated in New York by ________.

A. sailing on the Hudson River along with a new-year speech

B. holding a special concert at the Empire State Building

C. setting off fireworks and holding a special lighting show

30. What does the underlined word “illuminate” (in Para. 7) most probably mean?

A. Lighten.        B. Surround.       C. Decorate.        D. Broaden.

31. This passage is written mainly in order to ________.

A. compare some traditional festivals in China and America

D. report celebration activities for the “Year of the Monkey” in New York

Two recent studies have found that punishment is not the best way to influence behavior.

One showed that adults are much more cooperative if they work in a system based on rewards. Researchers at Harvard University in the United States and the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden did the study.

They had about two hundred college students play a version of the game known as the Prisoner’s Dilemma. The game is based on the tension between the interests of an individual and a group. The students played in groups of four. Each player could win points for the group, so they would all gain equally. But each player could also reward or punish each of the other three players. Harvard researcher David Rand says the most successful behavior proved to be cooperation. The groups that rewarded the most earned about twice as much in the game as the groups that rewarded the least. And the more a group punished itself, the lower its earnings. The study appeared last month in the journal Science.

The other study involved children. It was presented last month in California at a conference on violence and abuse(虐待). Researchers used intelligence tests given to two groups. More than eight hundred children were aged two to four the first time they were tested. More than seven hundred children were aged five to nine. The two groups were retested four years later, and the study compared the results with the first test. Both groups contained children whose parents used physical punishment and children whose parents did not.

The study says the IQs of the younger children who were not spanked were five points higher than those who were. In the older group, the difference was almost three points. The more they are spanked, the slower their mental development.

25. Which of the following is TRUE according to the second study?

     A. Children’s IQs have much to do with physical punishment.

     B. The study is about violence and cooperation of children.

     C. The children tested were divided into groups of four.

     D. Children’s mental development only relies on their IQs.

26. What does the underlined word “spanked” refer to?

     A. punished                B. blamed                   C. tested           D. praised

27. What might be the best title for the text?

     A. The Best Way to Correct Misbehavior

     B. Punishment Is the Best Way of Education

     C. Cooperation Is the Most Successful Behavior

     D. Punishment or Reward: Which Works Better on Behavior?

I can’t swim so I have a strong fear of water. Look back at my childhood, I think that three reasons might explain fear. Firstly, I am not allowed to go near the water when I was a child, as my mother had an unreasonable fear of it. Therefore, I was taught to see to the water as something danger. Secondly, my eyes became bad when I was five. If I took off my glass in the water, I couldn’t see something, and this increased my fear. What’s worse, for a child I once saw a neighbor drowned. Since then I have been more frightening.

In the fall of 1985,I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming for a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed  36  and one with quite a different tale to tell.

My grandma, a (n)  37  woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that  38 . But one year after I entered college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to  39  her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to  40 .

Then I got married with another dream: building my family from a  41  of adopted and biological children(亲生孩子). In 1999, we adopted our first son. A year later came our second adopted boy.  42 , the  following year ,we adopted son number three. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.

You can  43  how totally occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of eight. Our home was a complete zoo---a joyous zoo. Not surprisingly, I never did  44 it back to college full-time. But I never  45 my dream either. I had only one choice: make it work. That meant taking as  46  as one class each semester.

The hardest part was feeling  47  about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to  48   home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to  49 . But I knew I should set a(n)  50  for them to follow through the rest of their lives.

In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree

I am not  51  just single-minded(专心的). It always  52  me that from the  53 , challenges look huge, but when you’re in the midst of them, the same ones seem  54 . Not everything you want arrives in your life in one day. It’s a(n)  55 . Remember: little steps can lead to big dreams.

In front of the enormous Shibuya train station in Tokyo, there is a life - size bronze statue (雕像) of a dog. Even though the statue is very small when compared to the huge neon signs flashing, it isn’t difficult to find. It has been used as a meeting point since 1934 and today you will find hundreds of people waiting there for their friends to arrive—just look for the crowds.

Hachiko, an Akita dog, was born in 1923 and brought to Tokyo in 1924. His owner, Professor Eisaburo Uyeno and he were inseparable friends right from the start. Each day Hachiko would accompany his owner, a professor at the Imperial University, to Shibuya train station when he left for work. When he came back, the professor would always find the dog patiently waiting for him. Sadly, the professor died suddenly at work in 1925 before he could return home.

Although Hachiko was still a young dog, the bond between him and his owner was very strong and he continued to wait at the station every day. Sometimes, he would stay there for days at a time, though some believe that he kept returning because of the food he was given by street vendors (商贩). He became a familiar sight to commuters over time. In 1934, a statue of him was put outside the station. In 1935, Hachiko died at the place he last saw his friend alive.
