Well, it’s time for Words and Their Stories. We present more expressions about food from Elnir Scardueli, a listener in Brazil.

My mother believes you are what you eat. Then she’d always give us nutritious food. She likes serving us meat and potatoes, which can also mean the most important part of something. Here’s another expression about meat: one man’s meat is another man’s poison—one might like something very much while another person might hate it.

My father’s a good and honest person. People say he’s the salt of the earth. He’d never pour salt on a wound, or make someone feel worse about something. However, sometimes he tells us a story that seems bigger than life. So we have to take it with a grain of salt.

My husband makes enough money to support our family. So we say he brings home the bacon. He can cut the mustard(芥末), or do what is expected of him at work. Besides, he stands almost two meters tall, so it’s easy to find my husband in a crowd. He is a tall drink of water.

I take the train to work. It is not a pleasant ride because the train is so crowded that we are packed like sardines(沙丁鱼).

When we fail to see problems at work, my boss tells us to wake up and smell the coffee. We need to pay more attention and fix the problem.

I once made a big mistake at the office and felt foolish. I had egg on my face.

Over the weekend, my friend invited me to watch a football game on television. But I do not like football. It is not my cup of tea.

We hope this has given you food for thought and stay with us next time. Thank you.

Singapore is building an airport where indoor trees, waterfalls and a ‘rain vortex’ sit alongside check-in queues, waiting rooms and baggage carousels(传送带).

Where once sat a car park, there will soon be thousands of trees and plants across 22,000 sq metres of landscaped indoor parklands. This will be joined by a 40m-high indoor waterfall, expected to be the world’s tallest. These are the plans for the new 3.5 hectare ‘Jewel’ development at Singapore’s Changi Airport, scheduled to open in 2018; a five-storey, 134,000 square metre complex, mixing natural outdoor plants with modern airport facilities.

“The aim behind the introduction of such lush(茂盛的) landscaping is purely to provide all visitors with a memorable experience, one where they are surrounded by nature and greenery,”says Philip Yim, Chief Executive Officer of Jewel Changi Airport Development.

Promised sustainability(持续性) measures include “extensive usage of photovoltaic panels(光电板)”to produce renewable energy, as well as encouraging the use of natural lighting and a “high efficiency” air-conditioning system.

The indoor waterfall, named the “Rain Vortex”, will make use of special lighting effects to change at night into what is promised to be a dramatic light and sound show. “The Rain Vortex is one example of how sustainable design plays an important role in the planning of the attraction,” says Yim. ‘In the event of a rain storm, the power of the rain water will flow naturally through the oculus. The excess rain water collected will be used for irrigation of the landscaping at Jewel.’

Yim quotes the popular reputation Singapore enjoys as “the garden city”, where greenery is recognised as an essential part of the urban landscape, an attractive image which clearly inspires Jewel’s design.

However, it remains to be seen whether, beyond the aesthetic (审美的) appeal, Jewel can add genuine environmental things to something as un-environmental as an international airport.

28.  What can we learn about the “jewel” development Singapore’s change Airport?

A. It is being built on an old car park at present.

B. It has been planned and is being built.

C. It will be the world’s tallest airport.

29.  To keep the airport developing sustainably, it is advised to         .

A. use no electric lights

B. use more air-conditioners

C. make full use of natural water

D. try to produce renewable energy

30. What can we infer about the Rain Vortex?

A. It can transform into a dramatic show at anytime.

B. Its design will be a great success environmentally.

C. It will produce water to irrigate plants.

D. A rain storm may make it look prettier.

Soft winds blew throughout the Windy City today. We welcomed the winds, as it was another hot day in Chicago. The wind blew, bringing us some coolness and making the weather not that hot. But it was a beautiful summer day with a blue sky.

Chicago is a great city for eating, and we have enjoyed tasting the different foods. Last night, we tried one of the city's most famous foods: deep-dish pizza. Chicago is famous for the rich and cheesy thick-crust pizza, covered with a sweet tomato sauce. We topped it with olives and green peppers.

We were touring the city, mainly looking for delicious local foods. Today, we enjoyed a Polish specialty at lunch: Pierogis, an Eastern European dumpling-like dish, filled with foods like potatoes, cheese, mushrooms, cabbage and meat. Polish immigrants started settling in Chicago in the 1850s, and the city has one of the largest Polish communities in the U.S.

We took a break from exploring the city to talk with some of you! Ashley and Caty logged onto the Internet for an on-the-road version of TALK2US. We spoke to an English teacher in Tokyo, Japan, and a graduate student in India.

Meanwhile, Adam searched for some places around the city to shoot some video. He chose a spectacular spot: Navy Pier, Chicago's most-visited attraction. The winds from Lake Michigan keep visitors cool, and the view of the Chicago skyline never fails to impress. In fact, the view made all of us head over heels!

Our time in Chicago has come to an end.Tomorrow, the true journey begins, as we pass through Illinois and into Missouri via Route 66. Springfield, the home of Abe Lincoln, and St. Louis, the "gateway to the West," wait for us.

I think machine power is better than human power because we cannot survive without our daily used machines like bikes, coolers, computers, etc.

Yes, it’s very clear that machine power is better than man power. But machine power has its limitations (局限). It cannot survive without electricity and manhandling. If it doesn’t have these two then it is completely useless. So man should not completely depend on machines. One more point is that because of the use of machines man has become lazy. This laziness has brought in many problems like obesity, arthritis (关节炎) and other health problems. But I am not saying that man should completely turn from machine power to man power. He should have a balance of both. Even I can’t think of life without a car, a computer and a cooler.

Sally

9-May-2008

Humans only created the machines. So, human power is greater than machine power. To do the things quickly we created the machines. But machines cannot think. That thinking power beats machine power.

Tina

17-May-2008

But without humans there is no value of any machine. If someone wants to use his machine perfectly then one must have expert labor or man power.

Tommy

19-May-2008

Hi to all, my opinion is that human power is more powerful than machine power, because human beings created the machines. Human brain works more compared to machines.

Mike

20-May-2008

I think human power is better than machine power because even if we travel on foot to near places the money will not be wasted and we can get exercise.

Are you facing a situation that 61.       (look) impossible to fix?

In 1969, the dilution was terrible along the Cuyahoga River Cleveland, Ohio. It was unimaginable that it could ever be cleaned up. The river was so polluted that it 62.       (actual) caught fire and burned. Now, years later, this river is one of 63.       most outstanding examples of environmental cleanup.

But the river wasn’t changed in a few days 64.       even a few months. It took years of work 65.       (reduce) the industrial pollution and clean the water. Finally, that hard work paid off and now the water in the river is 66.       (clean) than ever.

When you’re in the market to buy a cheap laptop, there are many factors to consider. Do you want to go with a refurbished(翻新的)laptop or a new one? Are you willing to give up some features for a cheap laptop?   36

Decide what features you need. If you are only going to be using your new laptop for word processing, connecting to the Internet, and email, you can save much more than someone who will need a laptop capable of supporting gaming etc.  37

Do you want a Netbook or a Notebook? Netbooks are the new option for smaller, cheaper laptops.   38   However, they are limited in their functionality. If you know what you will be using your new laptop for, you can get the one that best suits your needs.

Choose an appropriate processor.  39   If you go with a cheap laptop, you should make sure the processor is fast enough to support your everyday work.

Check the memory. Just as with the processor, cheap laptops are generally going to have less memory. If you are using your new laptop in a limited way, this may be just fine for you. Be sure to check that the memory will be enough for your everyday uses.

40   If you’re looking for a cheap laptop that will store a lot of information, definitely pay attention to the hard drive capacity. You may be able to get a great deal but may have to pay for it with limited storage space.

A. Find a cheap laptop.

B. Check the hard drive capacity.

C. The processor will determine how fast your laptop will run.

D. They usually start at around $ 300 and are much easier to transport.

E. By knowing what features you need, you can significantly cut the cost.

F. All of these can influence your decision when you buy a laptop.

G. When in the market to buy a cheap laptop, looks aren’t always a major factor.

You may have heard adults say they are uncomfortable in the morning without a cup of coffee. One reason they may feel that way is that coffee contains caffeine(咖啡因). Caffeine appears naturally in coffee, tea, and cocoa beans, which are used to make chocolate. But now food makers are adding it to many products, from potato chips to water.

The US government is especially worried about the problem. That’s why the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is studying the health effects of caffeine on young people. Studies show that too much caffeine can make people nervous and unable to sleep. What’s more, caffeine is habit-forming. Those who consume it regularly and stop suddenly may experience headaches and feel tired.

One of the biggest concerns is the large amount of caffeine added to so-called energy drinks, like Red Bull. A 12-ounce can of cola has about 35 milligrams of caffeine. A similar serving of Red Bull contains more than three times that amount.

The Institute of Medicine is also working on caffeine-safety measures. “Teenagers should not drink beverages that contain caffeine. They should be aware of caffeine’s effects on health and on how the brain works. Take, for example, teenagers who consume caffeine to stay awake and study for a test. They will remember less of what they just studied,” said Stallings, a member of the institute.

Companies that make products with added caffeine claim they do not advertise them to kids. However, there is no law to stop children from buying them. So the FDA needs to set limits on caffeine, especially in energy drinks. As for added caffeine in foods, the government should just say no. If not, the amount of caffeine should be printed on food labels to remind consumers. The government must do that.

Doctors say kids should avoid caffeine. If you need extra energy, try these natural boosters: eat right, exercise, and get plenty of sleep.

32. What is the US government particularly concerned about?

A. The fact that coffee contains caffeine.       B. The practice of adding caffeine to foods.

C. The measures of avoiding caffeine’s effects.  D. The practice of using caffeine to make chocolate.

33. Red Bull is listed in the third paragraph as an example of _____.

A. caffeine’s effects on health           B. teenagers’ addiction to caffeine

C. drinks which contain much caffeine    D. people’s concern about teenagers’ health

A. the measures of protecting teenagers from caffeine’s effects

B. the process of the government’s controlling the use of caffeine

C. the government’s responsibility of taking care of teenagers

D. the risk of buying products containing caffeine nowadays

35. The author may agree that _______.

  A. headaches and feeling tired are common in teenagers

  B. food makers don’t add much caffeine to many products now

C. caffeine is good and useful for teenagers’ study

D. getting enough sleep can make people energetic

The Harp Seal is one of nature’s most beautiful and appealing (吸引人的) creatures. Many years ago it was hunted for its fur. Hunting Harp Seals is now illegal.

The seals spend the summer months migrating (迁徙) in large groups. Harp Seals close their nostrils (鼻孔) and earholes when diving in water, but have to surface frequently to breathe. Their favourite place to rest is on the top of icebergs.

The female Harp Seal gives birth in February or March and feeds her pups for 14-18 days. Baby Harp Seals begin to lose their white fur at around six to eight weeks of age. As an adult, the Harp Seal has brown skin. At birth, Harp Seals weigh 12kg but can weigh up to 130kg as adults. Harp Seals eat small fish, shrimps and krill. However, they are able to switch from one food to another depending on what they can get as food. Males have a lifespan of 29 years while females usually live for longer than 30 years.

Since the Canadian Government introduced laws to protect the seal pups from hunters, their numbers have increased to more than one million. Now every year, thousands of tourists flock to the pack ice to witness the wonderful sight of new pups born in spring.

If you want your life to stand for peace and kindness, it’s helpful to do some kind, peaceful things. One of my favorite  41  to do this is by developing my own helping rituals(习惯). These little acts of  42  are opportunities to be of service and reminders of how good it feels to be kind and  43 .

We live in a rural area of the San Francisco Bay Area. Most of what we see is  44  nature. One of the  45  to the beauty is the litter that some people throw out of their car windows as they are  46  on the rural roads. One of the few 47  to living out the rural areas is that public services, such as litter collection, are less  48  than they are closer to the city.

A helping ritual that I practice  49  with my two daughters is picking up litter in our surrounding areas. We’ve become so accustomed to doing this that my  50  will often say to me in a pleasant voice, “There’s some litter, Daddy; 51  the car!” And if we have enough  52 , we will often pull over and pick it up. It seems strange, but we actually  53  it. We pick up litter in parks, on sidewalks, practically anywhere. Once I even saw a(n) 54  picking up litter close to our house. The man whom I didn’t know smiled at me and said, “I  55  saw you doing this, and it seemed like a good idea. ”

Picking up litter is only  56  of an endless supply of possible helping rituals. You might like holding a door open for people, visiting and  57  lonely old people in nursing homes, or shoveling() snow off someone else’s driveway. Think of something that seems effortless  58  helpful. It’s worthwhile, personally rewarding, and can be a good example. Your acts of kindness can  59  others to do the same things. And everyone  60  from this.
