One day, Dad and I was taking a walk by the lake when a boy rode by with a very high speed. Suddenly, we heard the loud scream. We turned around and saw the boy struggling in the lake, crying out help. Daddy and I ran towards him quickly and had pulled him out of the water. However, the boy rode away immediate without saying "Thank you". I felt disappointing at his behavior. To my surprises, the boy came back with hot drinks and dry towels several minute later. You may have heard of the book Moby Dick(《白鲸记》), written by the American author Herman Melville. You may also know that Moby Dick is considered one of the greatest novels ever written. However, it might surprise you to find out Herman Melville was not always a highly regarded author.
Melville’s first two novels, Typee and Omoo, were widely read and financially successfully. They were both exciting tales of adventures at sea and experiences with people in foreign lands. Melville became quite famous. However, upon the publication of his third book, Mardi, Melville’s popularity began to weaken. He was no longer interested in telling tales of pure adventure, and his writing took on a style that alienated(使疏远) the general reading public of his time.
Melville published Moby Dick in October of 1851. It was an original novel, combining aspects of sociology and philosophy, which confused readers by its complex symbolism. The book sold poorly.
Melville’s next book, Pierre, was almost completely ignored by the public. Debt frustration and ill health finally forced Melville to take a low-paying job as a customs inspector. Eventually, Melville abandoned prose(散文) and began to write poetry.
The Civil War is the main subject of Melville’s poetry. He and his brother made a trip to the front line, and he published a book of poems, Battle-Pieces and Aspects of War, based on this experience.
Melville died in 1891 at the age of 72. At this point, his work had been completely forgotten by the public. His talent was to go unrecognized for the next thirty years. Then, in 1920s, his reputation began to improve as critics and readers rediscovered his work. Today Moby Dick is one of the best-known novels ever penned by an American author.

It's school time again! You're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer vacation is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little worried on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stay around for a little while. Let's find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the new things you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not allowed. Please pay close attention to what teachers say.
You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day, but it's a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don't. Make the first move and you'll be glad about what you did, and so will your new friends!
Seeing friends you haven't seen for a short time can make the first day a good one. You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers(运动鞋). It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you'll be needing. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don't have time in the morning.

C.make new friends D.go over your new lessons
49.If you happen to see an old friend on the first day of school, from the passage we know that you will feel________.
A.nervous B.lucky C.happy D.excited
SOMETIMES we make friends with unexpected people. For example, who would have thought that a spider would make friends with a pig? But in E B. White's classic novel "Charlotte's Web", this is exactly what happens.
The pair will appear in a movie at the end of this year.
In the story, Wilbur is an ill-fated (倒霉的) pig. When he is born, he is so small that the farmer decides to end the pig's life. Fortunately, the farmer's daughter stops him from killing Wilbur and volunteers to raise the pig in a barnyard (谷仓前的空地) .
Wilbur grows day by day and makes many friends in the barnyard, including the spider, Charlotte. However, one day a sheep tells Wilbur that he will be served up as dinner. But, Charlotte is determined to save her friend from this danger. By making words such as "famous pig" in her web, she persuades the farmer that Wilbur is some sort of supernatural (神奇的) animal, too important to kill. After Wilbur is saved, Charlotte is so tired that she finally dies.
Unusually, the author makes a spider the heroine (女英雄) of the book. Spiders are normally creatures many people regard with fear. Charlotte does everything in her power to keep Wilbur alive. It shows how a strong friendship can last through the worst possible times.
Who would you like to make friends with if you could?
