Glynis Davis:

I first piled on the ponds when I was in the family way and I couldn’t lose them afterwards. Then I joined a slimming club. My target was 140 pounds and I lost30 pounds in six months. I felt great and people kept saying how good I looked. But Christmas came and I started to slip back into my old eating habits. I told myself I’d lose the weight at slimming classes in the new year…but it didn’t happen. Instead of losing the pounds, I put them on. I’d lost willpower and tried to believe that the old age of fish and chips didn’t make any difference but the scales don’t lie.

Roz Juma:

To be honest, I never weigh myself any more I’ve leant to be happy with myself. It seemed to me that I would feel sorry about every spoonful of tasty food that passed my lips. My idea is simple. You shouldn’t be too much thinking about food and dieting. Instead, you should get on with life and stop dreaming of a supper-thin body. This is obviously the size I’m meant to be and, most of all, I’m happy with it.

Lesley Codwin:

I was very happy about winning Young Slimmer of the Year. I’d look in the mirror to believe this slim lady was me! That might have been my problem——perhaps from then on I didn’t pay any attention to myself. Winning a national competition makes everything worse, though, because you feel the eyes of the world are fixed upon you. I feel a complete failure because I’ve put on weight again.

It’s 9 a. m. , the morning rush hour in Toronto. A man has fallen down on a downtown street suddenly. Several passers-by stop to help the man. One woman reaches into her purse for her cellphone and hits 911, the emergency number.    36   Within ten minutes, the stricken(患病的) man is in the back of an ambulance and is sent to the hospital for life-saving treatment.

This scene is fairly common in Toronto and other major cities. Over the years, cities have developed systems to respond quickly to emergencies.    37   But none of this would be possible without the cooperation of car drivers who yield(让路)to emergency vehicles on busy downtown streets. In fact, it’s against the law for drivers not to yield.

To yield (让路)means to give away or, more specifically, to get out of the way.    38   . As yet, China doesn’t have any specific laws that require drivers to yield, whether it is for slower cars to move over to the inside lane of a highway or for all cars to give way to emergency vehicles.    39   Drivers did not yield when they heard the ambulance’s siren.

In Canada, failing to yield to an ambulance vehicle can result in a fine of $400~$2, 000 and reduction of three points off your license. That’s for a first offense.    40   This punishment is severe because lives are in danger.

A. It has resulted in (导致)many lives being saved.

B. A second offense results in a bigger fine, the loss of your driver’s license for two years and a possible jail sentence.

C. It saves lives and, who knows, someday it may save your own.

D. Three minutes later, sirens(警报)are heard in the distance as a police car, an ambulance and a fire truck race to the area.

E. It means pulling to the side of the road to let others pass.

F. Recently, an injured Beijing cyclist died on the way to hospital because the ambulance carrying him got stuck in city traffic.

G. Safe driving depends on driver’s being aware of the traffic around them and yielding when necessary.

Five years ago, when I taught art at a school in Seattle, I used Tinkertoys as a test at the beginning of a term to find out something about my students. I put a small set of Tinkertoys in front of each student, and said: “Make something out of the Tinkertoys. You have 45 minutes today—and 45 minutes each day for the rest of the week.”

A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see what the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations.

Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time. His constructions filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home. I was delighted at the presence of such a student. Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect(感染)other students.

Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside. I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking. Without fail one would declare, “But I’m just not creative.”

“Do you dream at night when you’re asleep

“Oh, sure.”

“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams.”The student would tell something wildly imaginative. Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads. “That’s pretty creative. Who does that for you

“Nobody. I do it.”

“Really—at night, when you’re asleep

“Sure.”

“Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay

25. The teacher used Tinkertoys in class in order to         .

A. make the lessons more exciting           B. know more about the students

C. raise the students’ interest in art           D. teach the students about toy design

A. He liked to help his teacher.              B. He preferred to study alone.

C. He was imaginative.                    D. He was active in class.

27. What does the underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

A. Mistake.        B. Disadvantage.        C. Difficulty.         D. Burden

28. Why did the teacher ask the students to talk about their dreams?

A. To find out about their sleeping habits.

B. To help them to improve their memory.

C. To find out about their ways of thinking.

D. To help them to see their creativity.

One cold winter day in 1900, a small boy was called Charles Chaplin was walked along the

street in London. He doesn’t have breakfast or lunch. He wanted to buy some bread, and he didn’t have any money. His father died since he was very young. His mother was often very sick, so she wouldn’t take care of Charles or his brother. Neither of them had to work to help his mother. He was very young but his dream was very big. He wanted to be great man in the world of films. So he worked very hardly.

A man steps on what seems like solid ground but discovers with horror that the ground is giving way beneath his feet. The man struggles desperately, but he is trapped. He cannot escape. Slowly he sinks deeper and deeper until at last he is gone, buried in the treacherous earth. The solid ground was solid only in appearance. It was actually quicksand, which is a deep mass of fine sand mixed with water.

How is quicksand formed? Water pushes up from below the surface and is held by the sand. The grains of sand are forced apart by the water. They cannot hold any weight. The subsurface water may have come from a spring, a river or a stream. Sometimes pools of water near beaches become filled with sand. When the soil under these pools does not allow for good drainage排水, the sand can become stretches of quicksand.

Is it true that a man who steps into quicksand is doomed to(注定)die? No, for men have fought their way from quicksand to firm land again. It is panic(恐慌)that creates the condition that can result in death, for the more a person struggles, the worse matters become. Quick movements will make the sand give way temporarily(临时地), but then it rushes and settles solidly around the body. A man trapped in quicksand should either lie back, or not move at all, except to stretch out his arms. When the weight of the sand his body has displaced equals his weight, he will stop sinking. With feet held still, and with slow movements of the arms, as in the backstroke in swimming men can manage to roll to safety and reach firm ground.

21 What is quicksand?

A. A piece of solid ground mixed with water.

B. A pool near the beach filled with water.

C. A deep mass of fine sand mixed with water.

D. A piece of sinking land in the water.

22The underlined part “giving way” in the first paragraph probably means ______.

D. breaking or breaking into pieces

23A person stops sinking when the weight of his body is _____ that of the sand his body has displaced.

A. greater than     B. the same as

C. half of          D. close to

24Men can manage to reach firm ground by ______.

A. holding feet still and moving arms slowly

B. lying back calmly and moving arms frequently

C. stretching out arms and swimming quickly

D. swimming quickly and moving arms slowly

Most children now chat daily either online or through their mobile phones. They are connecting to a huge number of other children all over the world. Some are shy “in real life” but are confident to communicate with others online; others find support from people of their own age on relationship issues, or problems at home.

Sometimes the online world, just like the real world, can introduce problems, such as arguments. Going online is great fun, but there are also a few people who use the Internet for offensive (冒犯性的) or illegal aims. Children must be made aware of both the good things and the dangers.

To keep children safe your management must cover the family computer. Just as you decide which TV pro-grams are suitable, you need to do the same for the websites and chat rooms your children visit. Remind your children that online friends are still strangers. Re-minding them of the risks will keep them alert (警惕).

Computer studies are part of schoolwork now, so it’s likely that your children may know more than you do. We get left behind when it comes to the latest gad-gets and the interactive areas of websites, like chat rooms and message boards, which are especially strange. The language of chat is strange to many parents, too. Chatters love to use abbreviations (缩写) such as: atb — all the best, bbfn — bye bye for now, cul8er — see you later, gr8 — great, Idk — I don’t know, imbl — it must be love, kit — keep in touch, paw — parents are watching, lol — laugh out loud, xlnt — excellent!

21. The passage is meant for ______.

A. children             B. parents      C. teachers      D. net bar owners

22. In order to keep children safe online, you’d better ______.

   A. choose suitable websites and chat rooms for them

   B. teach them to use correct net words

   C. surf the Internet together with them

   D. forbid them to use the Internet

23. If you stand beside him when your son is chatting about something secret online, he may use ______.

   A. bbfn           B. lol       C. paw             D. cul8er
