Personal transportation in America is mostly by car. Most families have two cars, one for the husband and the other for the wife. Usually they also have a double garage.

But in large cities, many people take a bus or a subway to work. If they drive their cars, they may have to pay a high fee for parking the car in the city. In a few cities, some workers come by train. To travel from city to city, most Americans use the plane unless the distance is very short. The plane is very quick because they don’t want to spend too much time traveling when they work. Some cities located near the water use boats to bring people to work. It’s the same in a city in China like Wuhan. People there use the boats to cross the Yangtze River. The right use of transportation improves American life by saving time. They always choose the best way to get to work so they have more time for family life.

These days we are exposed to ads wherever we go. They try to sell us products by using beautiful art, videos, images or slogans that are catchy. Below, you can find some of the most famous logos that you can see everywhere in your life.

Audi

This business logo is very popular and the company is a competitor of BMW. The four rings can be interpreted as many things, like four elements, or four nations, but the truth lies elsewhere. In the 1930s, there were four different car manufacturers in Germany and they were called Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer. They decided to get together and create one company: Audi. But they didn’t use the logo right away. It took 30 years to see the four rings for the first time.

BMW

BMW was founded in Germany in 1916. The business logo of the company is easily recognized by anyone. Nevertheless the true meaning is a bit controversial(有争议的). According to one side of the story, it represents the propeller(螺旋桨)of an airplane, because BMW used to produce airplanes in Munich. The other story goes that the blue and white triangles(三角形)are taken from the Bavarian(巴伐利亚) flag, which is the place where they were made. It’s your choice — you can pick up your favorite story!

Ferrari

The story behind this logo is very interesting. During World War I, an excellent pilot, Count Francesco Barraca, painted a horse, the logo of his spuadron(空军中队), on his airplane to bring him luck. But he died in the war. In order to remember him, his mother then convinced Enzo Ferrairi to put the logo on his racing cars in the early 1930s to bring him good luck. The logo has stayed the same ever since. The yellow on the background represents the birthplace of Enzo Farrari, Modena, Italy.

25. When did people first see the Audi logo?

  A. In the 1930s              B. In the 1940s

  C. In the 1950s              D. In the 1960s

26. What can we learn about BMW from the third paragraph?

A. The logo of BMW represents an airplane.

B. It once produced airplanes in Bavaria.

C. The Bavarian flag includes blue and white triangles.

D. Most people prefer the second story.

27. Why did Ferrari use yellow as the logo’s background?

   A. In memory of Count Francesco Barraca

   B. To show respect for Enzo Ferrari

   C. In order to bring good luck to drivers

   D. To express his thanks to Count Francesco Barracca’s mother

What happens when the children leave to start new lives at university? Joanna Moorhead talks to some emptynesters.

When Paul, our oldest, left, I remember feeling this terribley sad: it was a physical sadness, almost like walking around with a hangover. It seemed to me like the very opposite of childbirth: that had been about being given someone, my baby, whereas this was a pain, my child being taken away from me. For days the grief was very, very raw; I cried a lot of the time for the first day or two after he left. And that helped a lot, because I needed to feel sad, I needed to grieve for what I was losing.

It didn't get any easier when Adam and then Alice went, either; I remember Alice leaving to go InterRailing, and that was really the start of Tom and I having the house to ourselves; and for several days after she'd gone I wandered around in a bit of daze(头晕), I felt so sad. It felt such a shock, to be suddenly disconnected from this person with whom you've been so involved, whom you've looked after for so long.

Each time one of them has left, I've tried hard not to cry at the moment of parting, but usually I don't manage it. The children have all been really sweet about it—they do understand, at some level, how hard it is for me. But the thing is that the experience they're having is the complete opposite to the experience I'm having: for them, leaving home is all about excitement and adventure and something new, whereas for me it's all about being worried and anxious and feeling that my life isn't nearly so exciting or interesting now; they're not around in it the whole time.

21. How did Paul feel when he entered university?

Aexcited and independent.             Bsad and unconscious.

Cselfconfident and proud.                Dboth cold and sad.

22. What can we learn from what Joanna Moorhead did in paragraph 2?

AWhen children leave home, parents need to cry.

BParents like Joanna Moorhead felt alone.

CParents should prevent children leaving home.

DParents reduced to miss children by crying.

23. What is the main idea of the whole passage?

AParents cry again and again.         BChildren leave home for university.

CParents are at home alone again      DThe missed parents cry home.

Dear Editor

I'm writing to tell you about how we students use computers in our daily lives. Some use them in a good way when some others don't. As far as I am concerned, more and more students now use computers help with their study. If we meet some difficulties when they are doing their homework, they always got help from the Internet. To spend their spare time, they look for more informations with the computers to have much more knowledge. At the same time, however, the great number of students are still so interested in PC games and chatted with other on the Internet that they can not force themselves to return to their study. They are really in dangerous .That is how we mainly use computers. They can either do good and harm to us.

Best wishes!

Yours truly,

Let children learn to judge their own work. A child who learns to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time. If corrected too much., he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the differences between the language he uses and the language those around him. Little by little, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learn to do all the other things without being taught-to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle-compare their performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes.

But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them himself. We do it all for his act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says , what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.

If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine(daily) work? Our job should be to help the children when they tell us that they can’t find the way to get to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.
