The arts, especially music, should be part of every school's lessons at every grade level. Students would be much smarter if they had some musical experience. They could improve their classroom skills, like paying attention and following directions. People develop all these skills when they learn music. Making music also lets children use their imagination. It provides students with a chance to try out their own ideas.

Music not only makes children better students, but also gives them something positive to do. In a music program, children can be part of a band instead of joining a gang (团伙). Parents can enjoy listening to their children's music instead of seeing them glued to a computer or TV screen. In a school band, students get to be part of a team. They can get along well with old friends and make new friends through music.

Music builds self-confidence, too. It gives children a sense of achievement and success. Making music is something for them to be proud of, and it lets kids practice performing in front of an audience. Music gives children an opportunity for self-expression, and that helps develop their self-confidence.

Once again, music is important because it can make children better students, give them something positive to do, and build their character. That is why music should be offered in every single grade in every school.

Why I Would Raise Chickens

If you were living on $2 a day, what would you do to improve your life?

That’s a real question for the one billion people living in extreme poverty (贫穷) today. There’s no single right answer and poverty looks different in different places. But through my work with the foundation (基金会), it’s very clear to me that just about anyone who’s living in poverty will be better off if they have chickens.

Chickens are easy and inexpensive to take care of. Many kinds of them can eat whatever they find on the ground. Hens needs some kind of shelter where they can nest and as the chickens grow, you might want some wood and wire to make a coop (鸡舍).

They are a good investment (投资). Suppose a new farmer starts with five chickens. One of her neighbors owns a rooster. After three months, she can have 40 chicks. Eventually, with a sale price of $ 5 per chickens, she can earn more than $ 1000 a year, versus the extreme poverty line of about 700 a year.

They help keep children healthy. Malnutrition (营养不良) kills more than 3.1 million children a year. Although eating more eggs can help fight malnutrition, many farmers find it a better idea to let the eggs hatch (孵化), sell the chickens and use the money to buy food. But if the farmers have enough hens to give them extra eggs, they can then cook them for families.

They empower (授权) women. Because chickens are small and stay close to home, many cultures consider them as a woman’s animal. Women who sell chickens are likely to spend the money on their families.

When I was growing up, chickens weren’t something you studied---they were something you made silly jokes about. It has been eye-opening for me to learn what a difference they can make in the fight against poverty. It may sound funny but I mean it when I say that I am excited about chickens.

56. Which of the following is NOT the reason why writer suggests raising chickens?

    A. It is more likely that children can become healthy.

    B. It is a good way to earn more money.

    C. It is not difficult but expensive to raise chickens.

    D. It gives women power to support their families.

57. What does “better off” in the first paragraph mean?

    A. earlier           B. richer           C. healthier          D. happier

58. What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. Raising chickens is the best way to fight poverty.

    B. If a farmer sells 40 chickens, she will earn 1000 more than before.

    C. The writer dislikes chickens very much.

    D. The writer does think chickens can help to fight poverty.

The next time you eat a piece of chocolate, be sure to enjoy it, because according to two of the world’s largest chocolate makerMars Inc and Barry Callebaut, the treat may soon be in short supply. The problem? We are consuming the candy at a faster pace than farmers can grow cocoa. The can manufacturers say that in 2013, people consumed 70,000 tons more cocoa than was produced. Experts say that this is the worst supply-demand imbalance they have experienced m more than 50 years.

Parts of the reason for the condition is the large reduction in supply, caused by a continuous drought in the west African countries of Ivory Coast and Ghana, where more than 70 percent of the world’s cocoa is produced. Additionally, a certain disease known as frosty pod has destroyed 30 to 40 percent of global cocoa production. As a result, many farmers have turned to more profitable and easier grown crops like corn. This means that even if conditions improve, cocoa production may never get back to normal.

Meanwhile, the world is only getting hungrier for chocolate. The biggest increase in demand is from the residents of emerging market countries like India. Though their consumption is nowhere close to the amount European devour, their newly acquired amount for the treat, is making a huge dent (凹痕) in an already tight market.

There is also the growing desire for dark chocolate, which contains more than 70 percent cocoa compared to normal chocolates. Experts believe that if consumption continue at this pace, cocoa deficits (差额) could swell to one million tons by 2020 and to an even more worrisome, two million tons, by 2030.

Not surprisingly, cocoa prices have risen by 60% since 2012, a cost that manufacturers have offset by raising the prices of everyone’s favorite candy. As the situation worsens, the price of chocolate can only riseso be sure to enjoy piece of the sweet treat, like it is your last!

With a growing number of people in San Francisco choosing not to own a car, German carmaking company BMW has decided to branch out into car-sharing services with 70 cars spread around the city, first in 14 locations, with a further 100 being added gradually.

“This is not an A-to-A service — it is A-to-B,” says Richard Steinberg, chief executive of the DriveNow scheme (方案), pointing out that members can pick up a car downtown for the half-hour drive to the airport for only $12, compared with about $40-50 for a taxi.

Whether that is possible in real life depends on traffic, of course. A midmorning drive from Union Square down Highway 101 to the airport takes just 22 minutes; however, driving back during the rush hour takes twice as long.

Most of the cars that are stuck in San Francisco's traffic jams (交通阻塞) are giving off all sorts of harmful gas. But not DriveNow's BMW ActiveE cars.

“All the cars in San Francisco are electric,” Mr Steinberg says.

In San Francisco, handing back the car to DriveNow is easy — just pick one of its drop-off points, park and walk away. There are no forms to fill in, no time-consuming (耗时的) rules.

Several other carmakers and other players within the motor industry are experimenting with similar schemes, for example Daimler's Car2go scheme, which is operated in many cities around the world.

“We picture a future where car-sharing members outnumber car owners in big cities around the world,” says Car2go spokesman Andreas Leo.

Franck Leveque, from company Frost & Sullivan, agrees.

“Car sharing is growing at a pace we have not seen before,” he says. “By 2020 we believe there will be 15 million members of car-sharing schemes in Europe alone, with 140,000 vehicles in operation.”

After a late night doing tons of homework, you are trying hard to keep your eyes open in class. “  16   You are probably thinking. “This weekend I’ll make up for all the sleep I have lost.”

Most people think like you, that if you stay in bed longer on Saturdays and Sundays, you will catch up hour-by-hour on your missed sleep during the week.

However, this is wrong.  17  In fact, scientists have just found that sleeping-in during the weekend will not do you any good, but rather make you feel more tired on Monday morning, reported The Telegraph.

18   It tells us when to wake up in the morning and when to feel sleepy at night. But the time on our body clock can be changed if we start taking on different sleeping habits.   19

If we decide to get up only    20  minutes or half an hour late, it won’t matter. This is because our body clock can accommodate(适应) a delay of up to an hour, which means that a short lie-in at weekends is unlikely to have any big effect. 20 This means on Monday morning we sometimes struggle to get out of bed.

So, what should we do to balance out all the rest we’ve missed? Scientists say that simply getting eight hours of sleep would do the trick, not any longer,. That’s because our brain rests more efficiently when it’s tired.

A. Sleeping is nothing like paying back money.

B. Sleep is important for everyone.

C. This is why staying in bed for longer than usual might confuse our body clock.

D. But delays of up to two hours or more can throw our body out of order.

E. I need more sleep!

F. However, if we sleep longer, our sleep becomes less efficient.

G. Our body keeps a clock inside.

When you make a mistake, big or small, cherish it like its the most precious thing in the world. Because in some ways, it is.

Most of us feel bad when we make mistakes, beat ourselves up about it, feel like failures, get mad at ourselves.

And thats only natural: most of us have been taught from a young age that mistakes are bad, that we should try to avoid mistakes. Weve been scolded when we make mistakes—at home, school and work. Maybe not always, but probably enough times to make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction.

Yet without mistakes, we could not learn or grow. If you think about it that way, mistakes should be cherished and celebrated for being one of the most amazing things in the world: they make learning possible; they make growth and improvement possible.

By trial and error—trying things, making mistakes, and learning from those mistakes—we have figured out how to make electric light, to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, to fly.

Mistakes make walking possible for the smallest toddler, make speech possible, make works of genius possible.

Think about how we learn: we dont just consume information about something and instantly know it or know how to do it. You dont just read about painting, or writing, or computer programming, or baking, or playing the piano, and know how to do them right away. Instead, you get information about something, from reading or from another person or from observing, then you make mistakes and repeat, making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, until youve pretty much learned how to do something. Thats how we learn as babies and toddlers, and how we learn as adults. Mistakes are how we learn to do something new—because if you succeed at something, its probably something you already knew how to do. You havent really grown much from that success—at most its the last step on your journey, not the whole journey. Most of the journey was made up of mistakes, if its a good journey.

So if you value learning, if you value growing and improving, then you should value mistakes. They are amazing things that make a world of brilliance possible.

32. Why do most of us feel bad about making mistakes?

A. Because mistakes make us suffer a lot.

B. Because its a natural part in our life.

C. Because weve been taught so from a young age.

D. Because mistakes have ruined many peoples careers.

33. According to the passage, what is the right attitude to mistakes?

A. We should try to avoid making mistakes.

B. We should owe great inventions mainly to mistakes.

C. We should treat mistakes as good chances to learn.

D. We should make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction.

34. The underlined word toddler in Paragraph 6 probably means         .

A. a small child learning to walk          B. a kindergarten child learning to draw

C. a primary pupil learning to read      D. a school teenager learning to write

35. We can learn from the passage that .

A. most of us can really grow from success

B. growing and improving are based on mistakes

C. we learn to make mistakes by trial and error

D. we read about something and know how to do it right away

It’s nothing new that you can find many files or services you can download or use from the Internet. The question is : Is downloading legal or not? In most cases the answer is negative, because sharing and downloading are illegal. Of course, you can find files for legal downloading, but you have to pay for them.

It seems innocent if you click on the download mark, but it isn’t. It should be compared with stealing in a store. Would you steal a magazine, an MP3 player or a car? Downloading from the Internet is a theft, and sharing files, once you have stolen them, only makes it worse. For example, if everybody only downloaded, movies wouldn’t make money and the studios wouldn’t invest millions of dollars to make new ones.

Many people may think it better, easier and cheaper to do downloading. I think, that is the main reason why Internet users prefer sharing something to buying them. In the modern world we love convenience and what could be more convenient than getting music, films and games without having to leave your house? You don’t need to pay for what you get, there is no registration, and you don’t have to wait until shops open or the CD/DVD you want is posted to you. However, you could be in big trouble if you are caught. You could go to prison as a result of acting unlawfully, but so far only a tiny amount of people have been charged for downloading illegally. The majority of people who download illegally, and use the files for their personal use, will not get in trouble. And that’s why it’s important for people to understand what the long-term consequences are if they don’t want to pay for their music, films and TV.
