Warmer temperatures are the new normal

Hotter weather appears to be here to stay,El Nino or not. That's according to the U.N. weather agency. It warned that the Paris climate accord(协定)last year shouldn't give way to complacency(自满)about global warming.

The World Meteorological Organization issued(公布)its annual climate report following a record-hot 2015.It drew people's attention to records already announced by different countries' weather agencies. The agency pointed out that 2015 was breaking records on the surface. It also broke records hundreds of meters deep in the ocean.

And the first two months of 2016 were even hotter. These months are so unusual that they "have sent shockwaves around the climate science community."That's according to David Carlson of the World Climate Research Program.

Climate scientists blame record high temperatures last year and this year so far on a combination of a super-sized El Nino.It is a natural warming of pans of the Pacific that changes weather worldwide.Another factor is a long-term global warming trend from the burning of fossil fuels(化石燃料).

NASA said last month was 1.35 degrees Celsius (2.43 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than average.Of that,0.8 degrees (1.44 degrees Fahrenheit) comes from the long-term warming. And 0.25 degrees (0.45 degrees Fahrenheit) comes from El Nino. The rest is from unexplained results. This was calculated by climate scientist Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute in Germany and the University of New South Wales.

Even after the El Nino phenomenon becomes less strong in coming months, way above normal temperatures won't exactly go away,Carlson and others said.

"We're on a slope; sometimes the slope goes very steep, sometimes it's a little bit more shallow, but we're going upward,"Carlson said in a news conference."So the normal is going to be increases: It's going to be increased temperature, increased ocean heat content, loss of ice,we know all of these things."

Katharine Hayhoe is a Texas Tech climate scientist who wasn't part of the WMO team. But she agreed:"These records vividly show the destructive power of an El Nino on climate changes."

The WMO predicts warmer weather accompanied by pockets of both drier and wetter conditions, depending on the region, around the world.

WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas told reporters in Geneva that many people believe the climate issue is "solved...since we reached a nice agreement in Paris."But,he said,"We haven't changed our behavior yet."

The drunken thief who pretended he was Superman to stop a child raising the alarm has been caught after he leapt from the apartment building in his pants to make the girl convinced.

Thief Ethan Adamson, 25, told police that he had broken into a fifth-floor flat after a drinking session, believing it was empty. But he was horrified when the owner’s 10-year-old daughter woke up while he was there.

From his hospital bed, the thief told reporters, “To keep her quiet, I told her I was really Superman and I’d soon be flying off back to my secret headquarters.” “She called my bluff (吓唬) and told me, ‘If you’re Superman, show me you can fly or I’ll scream’ ”.

Police later found him on the roof in just his yellow pants, covered in cuts and bruises after a baffled neighbor heard his cries of pain. He now faces seven years behind bars for burglary.

Police spokesman Frank Amado said, “He was in quite a serious state and couldn’t move until we got up there using ladders. He was treated for his injuries and we got him some fresh clothes before taking him to hospital, where he is being kept under guard until he is well enough to be arrested.”

The Chess Competition

I had signed up to play in the School Chess Competition two months before. I’d been counting the days, filling my afternoons with practice games and   26   everyone I knew to play chess with me.

Soon the competition was about to begin. I would be competing against twenty   27  , and all of us would be battling for just a few trophies. Looking at the prizes, I could just    28   one of them sitting on my bookcase.

My daydream was interrupted by the announcement of the   29   round. “Shake hands and start playing!” said the judge. I   30   across the board and saw that my first opponent (对手) was almost too small to see over the top of the table. “Aha!” I thought. “This will be a (n)   31   win.”

One unexpected game later, I   32   my over confidence. My opponent, the nine-year-old girl, had beaten me in only 10 minutes! I hid my disappointment and   33   her. “Good game! You’re a fantastic player,” I said with a sincere smile.

The next three rounds went by very quickly, with each game proving more   34   than the one before. By evening I had one win and three losses. After the second game, I was ready to go home and give up,   35   I stayed anyway, smiling and sincerely congratulating each of my opponents.

As the trophies were being awarded, I listened respectfully (尊敬地), clapping my hand when each winner’s name was   36  .

It was hard to hide my disappointment, but I tried.   37  , I heard the announcer say my name. “For excellent chess etiquette (礼仪), a   38   relationship, and great determination, the Good Sport Award   39   to Dustin Hodges,” the judge declared. It was amazing and I smiled broadly as I walked up to accept the prize. Although it wasn’t the trophy that I had hoped for, the gold cup looks pretty good on my bookcase. I think it won’t stay there forever, and I plan to   40 it with the championship trophy next year.

I ran into quite a few language problems while vacationing with my family last summer. The most embarrassing was when my Mom apologized to the people we were staying with because her “pants were dirty”. They looked at her in amazement (吃惊), not knowing how to react. You see, Mom had fallen over and gotten mud on her jeans. But in Britain, “pants” means underpants or knickers, not trousers as it does back home.

                                                          Katie-From America

I went to stay with a friend on the west coast last summer. Her flat was on the first floor of a high-rise building so I got the lift up. Then I wandered round for ages looking for her flat but couldn’t find it. Fed up and tired, I finally had to go out to find a phone box. She explained that her flat was on the first floor, which for me meant the ground floor.

                                                          David-From Britain

When I asked for the “restroom” in a big department store, people kept directing me to a room with seats where I could sit and “rest”. It took me years to get through to someone that I only wanted the toilet!

                                                       Tom-From America

Last summer we went on a two-week family touring holiday, so Dad hired a car over the Internet. This was an old vehicle (汽车) and there turned out to be lots of things wrong with it. When he phoned the hire company and tried to explain that the lock on the boot was broken, they thought he was talking about footwear!  He had no idea their word for “boot” was “trunk”.  In the end we went to a garage and just solved the problem.

The Taj Mahal (泰姬陵) is a love story, a sad and beautiful one. If it didn’t exist, we would easily imagine that the story of its construction was simply a fairy tale. Three hundred years ago, there lived an Indian emperor called Shah Jahan. His wife was a beautiful and bright woman whom he loved greatly. Her title was Mumtazl Mahan: its shortened form Taj Mahan, means “pride of the palace”. In the year 1630 this beloved wife of the emperor died. He was so brokenhearted that he thought of giving up his throne. He decided out of his love for his wife, to build her the most beautiful tomb that had ever been seen.

He summoned the best artists and architects from India, Turkey, Persia and Arabia and finally, the design was complete. It took more than twenty thousand men working over a period of 18 years to build the Taj Mahan, one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.

The building itself stands on a marble platform 29 meters square and 6-7 meters high. Towers rise from each of the four corners. The Taj itself soars another 61 meters into the air. It is an eight-sided building made of white marble.

The emperor planned to build an identical tomb of black marble for himself on the other side of the river connected by a silver bridge. However his son put him into a prison in the palace before he could finish, and for the rest of his life, he could only gaze across river at the tomb of his beloved wife.

Everyone is forgetful, but as we age, we start to feel like our brains are slowing down a bitand that can be a very annoying thing. 36 Read on for some techniques worth trying.

1.  37

People who regularly made plans and looked forward to upcoming events had a 50 percent reduced chance of Alzheimer's disease (早老性痴呆症), according to a recent study.    38  Something as simple as setting a goal to havea weekly coffee date with a friend will do. There's evidence that people who have a purpose in life or who are working on long or short-term goals appear to do better. In other words, keep your brain looking forward.

2. Go for a walk.

Mildly raised glucose (葡萄糖) levels can harm the area of the brain that helps you form memories and physical activity can help get blood glucose down to normal levels. In fact, exercise produces chemicals that are good for your brain.  39

3. Learn something new.

Take a Spanish class online, join a drawing club, or learn to play cards. A study found that mental stimulation (刺激) limits the weakening effects of aging on memory and the mind. But the best thing for your brain is when you learn something new and are physically active at the same time.   40 .

A. Focus on the future.

B. This can be especially harmful to the aged.

C. It should be something like learning gardening or go dancing with your friends.

D. So take a few minutes each day to do some reading.

E. But don't worry if your schedule isn't filled with life-changing events.

F. Luckily, research shows there is a lot you can do to avoid those moments.

G. In other words, when you take care of your body, you take care of your brain.

In the famous fairy tale, Snow White eats the Queen’s apple and falls victim to a curse; in Shakespeare’s novel, Romeo drinks the poison and dies; some ancient Chinese emperors took pills that contained mercury, believing that it would make them immortal(不朽的), but they died afterward.
Poison has long been an important ingredient in literature and history, and it seems to always be related to evil, danger and death. But how much do you really know about poison?
An exhibition, The Power of Poison, opened last month at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, intended to give the audience a more vivid understanding of poison. The exhibition will continue until Aug 2014, reported The New York Times.
The museum tour starts in a rainforest setting, where you can see live examples of some of the most poisonous animals: caterpillars, frogs and spiders. Golden poison frogs, for instance, aren’t much bigger than a coin, but their skin is covered in a poison that can cut off the signaling power of your nerves, and a single frog has enough venom to kill 10 grown humans.
The exhibition also features interactive activities. In an iPad-based game, visitors are presented with three puzzling illnesses and asked to identify the poisons based on symptoms. In one case, for example, a pet dog is found sick in a backyard and visitors have to figure out whether it was the toad (
蟾蜍), the leaky batteries in the trash or the dirty pond water that did it.
“Poisons can be bad for some things,” Michael Novacek, senior vice president of the museum, told NBC News. “Yet they can also be good for others.”
This is what visitors learn from the last part of the exhibition, which displays how poisons can be used favorably by humans, including for medical treatment.
The blood toxins of vampire bats, for example, can prevent blood from clotting (
凝结), which may protect against strokes. A poisonous chemical found in the yew tree is effective against cancer, which is what led to the invention of a cancer-fighting drug called Taxol. One chemical in the venom of Gila monsters can lower the blood sugar of its victims, so it has been used to treat diabetes.
The benefits from natural poisons are not limited to just medicine. Believe it or not, many substances that we regularly take in – chili, coffee and chocolate, etc. – owe their special flavors or stimulating effects to chemicals that plants make to poison insects.

63. By mentioning Snow White and Romeo at the beginning of the story, the author intends to ___________.

A. show that poison has long been involved in literature
B. show that poison is always linked with evil and death
C. draw readers’ attention to the topic of the article

D. get readers to think of more examples of the use of poison in stories

64. What is the main purpose of the exhibition The Power of Poison?

A. To give people more knowledge about poison.
B. To teach people how to handle poisonous animals.
C. To inform people about which animals are the most poisonous.
D. To show how poison has been used for medical treatment.

65. Which of the following statements about the exhibition is TRUE according to the article?

A. The exhibition will lead visitors to a real rainforest.

B. Golden poison frogs are the most poisonous animals on display.
C. Those who visit the exhibition can join in some iPad-based interactive games.
D. Visitors can listen to lectures on recent studies of poisonous animals.
