高一英语试题

Millions of girls grow up with the hope of becoming a famous singer. Some even win local talent competitions as children, but only a few such early successes and dreams turn into reality. Jessica Andrews is one of the few whose dreams have come true.

Andrews, first taste of success came at the age of 10. She won a talent competition in her home town of Huntingdon, Tennessee, singing I Will Always Love You, originally sung by Whitney Houston. Houston's version of the song appeared on The Bodyguard sound track, which happened to be the first album Andrews ever bought.

Within two years, talk of Andrews had spread to Nashville and caught the attention of producer Byron Gallimore, whose credits include work with Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Jo Dee Messina. With Gallimore signed on to produce, Andrews soon had a recording contract (合同)with Dream Works' Nashville label.

Andrews' professional career was launched with 1999's Heart Shaped World, recorded when she was 14 years old. The album included the country hit I Will Be There For You, which also appeared on The Prince Of Egypt. She followed up the release of the album by touring as a support act for such country superstars as Faith Hill and Trisha Yearwood.

With the release of 2001's Who I Am, Andrews became a star in her own right. The album was certified (证明)gold for sales of 500,000 copies. Andrews returned in April 2003 with Now, an album that she promised would show a new side of the young artist. "This album has a very different feeling for me," she said. "It's a lot more personal and there's a confidence that wasn't quite there on the first two. I feel especially connected to this group of songs."

   Going Green

Green is no longer just a color. It is a new way of thinking about the world and a way of living your life. It’s catching on all over the world. More and more people decide to “go green” because they know that we only have one planet to live on. We won’t be able to live on it much longer if we keep wasting energy, and destroying(破坏) our home with air, land, and water pollution.

“Green Living” means:

Understanding that your choices affect(影响) not just you, but everybody everywhere.

Understanding that your choices affect not just today, but the future.

Understanding that when we talk about “saving the planet” or “saving the environment,” we are actually talking about saving ourselves!

You may be thinking: “Hey, I’m just one person, on a planet with billions. I can’t really make a difference.” Well, have you ever seen a group of people do “the wave(波浪)”? It always starts off with one or two people, jumping up and down like crazy. Soon thousands of people are joining in. “Going green” is just like that. It starts with small, simple actions. It can soon build into a wave that will change the whole planet and lead us all to healthier, happier lives.

Many students have already shared with us their efforts to help the environment:

Gabrielle, 12, writes, “I have helped my community plant a garden and I ride my bike or skateboard to school.”

Kaitlyn, 10, says, “Lots of paper towels are thrown away, so I use a reusable cloth towel to dry my hands instead.”

“I always recycle(重复利用)” says Natalie, 13. “You can call me a recycler! I always look at the bottom of things. I want to see whether they have the little sign that tells you it can be recycled. So I almost recycle everything!”

Now it’s your turn to think about how you can “go green”. Make important choices and take actions to improve the environment right around you and the health of the whole world.

13What does the expression “catch on” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

AGo worse.        BCome to an end.

   CGet help.          DBecome popular.

14From the passage we can learn that ______.

Aour choices can’t affect the future

Bone person can’t make a difference

Cour planet is destroyed by pollution

Dgoing green starts with small actions

15The writer may agree that ______.

Agoing green is hard for students

Bgoing green means changing others

Cgoing green is actually a choice

Dgoing green remains far away from us

It was a cold and wet night, I had just left a local club to travel home when I lost control of my car. I crashed into a car, then hit a tree. The force was so great that is knocked the parked car several meters forwards. I was knocked out cold. Worse still, I had no idea that a fire had started under the engine of my car. It then set the tree on fire.

Driving behind me was a young man, who I later found out was called Jared. He saw the accident occur and stopped to help me out of the burning car. He put his own life in danger when he got into the back seat to try to undo my seat belt. This wasn’t easy because I’d hit the car on my driver’s side and my seat belt was squeezed into the console (操纵台).

With my seat belt undone, Jared then hit open the driver’s window to drag me out as I had still not regained consciousness (意识). He bravely did this while my car and the tree were burning. Woken by the crash, the homeowners came out to investigate. Jared told them to ring emergency services. I was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a serious condition. I eventually woke up a day later.

I owe my life to Jared and I consider him a friend due to the special bound. Jared says that although the events of that night initially shocked him, he never once hesitated to help. In addition, he doesn’t believe that he did anything special.

D. To put out the burning fire in the car.

6. Which is the best title for the passage?

A. A narrow escape from death               B. A courageous crash rescue

C. Jared, my best friend                         D. A frightening car fire

Sharks are among the oldest animals on Earth. There are hundreds of kinds of sharks. Most are about two meters long. The dogfish shark, however, is less than twenty centimeters in length. A shark has an extremely good sense of smell. It can find small amounts of substances in water, such as blood, body liquids and chemicals produced by animals.  29   Sharks eat fish, other sharks, and plants that live in the ocean.
Sharks grow slowly. About forty percent of all sharks lay eggs.   30   Some sharks carry their young inside their bodies as humans do. Some sharks are not able to reproduce until they are twenty years old. Most reproduce only every two years. And they give birth to fewer than ten young sharks. For this reason, overfishing of sharks is of special danger to the future of the animal.
Sharks are important for the world’s oceans. They eat injured and diseased fish. Their hunting activities mean that the numbers of other fish in ocean waters do not become too great.

  31

People hunt sharks for sport, food, medicine and their skin. Experts say the international market for some kinds of sharks has increased because many parts of a shark are valuable.
Collectors pay thousands of dollars for the jaws of a shark.   32   The skin of a shark can be used like leather.
In Asia, people enjoy a kind of soup made from shark fins. Experts say a fisherman can earn a lot of money for even one kilogram of shark fins. Sharks are among the oldest animals on Earth, but some sharks are in danger of disappearing from Earth.   33

A. The others give birth to live young.
B. They are a threat to other forms of life in the ocean.
C. This powerful sense helps sharks find their food.
D. Sharks are valuable to us and we can make full use of them.

E. Shark liver oil is a popular source of Vitamin A.
F. This protects the plants and other forms of life that exist in the oceans.

G. If too many sharks in one area are killed, that group of sharks may never return to normal population levels.

11   People traveled in search of food and shelter or in order to flee from their enemies. Sometimes they were looking for gold or silver in order to become rich. On other occasions they were searching for rich farmland.

This is not to say that no one ever traveled just for fun. Even in ancient times, some pleasure travel occurred. During a typical season, 700,000 tourists would crowd into the ancient city of Rome, where animals performed and magicians entertained them.    12

13   International tourist arrivals alone reached as many as 546 million in 1994 and are forecast(预测;预报) to rise to 937 million in 2010, according to the World Trade Organization.

14   Probably the most common reason for traveling is related to our physical well-being. Actually, traveling to sports events is one of the fastest growing types of travel. In our fast developing, modern society where stress has become part of people’s life, people can rest and relax by having a change of environment and activities.

15   No one seems to doubt that travel broadens the mind. In 18th century Europe, young men would go on a Grand Tour to various countries in order to complete their education. Today the desire to travel to different countries is encouraged by modem mass media. People who travel to other countries can at the same time learn more about their own country and culture.

A. But why do people like traveling so much?

B. Throughout history, most travel was not for pleasure.

C. So they travel to a lake for a swim or to a park for a hike.

D. The improvement in transportation has also encouraged people to travel.

E. Wealthy Romans made trips to Greece to take part in the Olympic Games.

F. The growth of tourism has become a modern phenomenon experienced by all countries in the world.

G. Another important reason for traveling is to satisfy our curiosity about different places and cultures.

For 52 years my father got up at 5:30 am every morning, went to work, and returned home at 5:30 pm. I never saw my father stayed home from work ill, nor did I ever see my father lay down to take a nap. He had no hobbies, other than taking care of his family. All he asked from me, his daughter, was to help him while he was repairing something, so we could have some time to talk.

For 22 years, after I left home for college, my father called me at 9:00 am every Sunday. Nine years ago when I bought my first house, my father, 67 years old, spent eight hours a day for three days painting my house. He would not allow me to pay someone to have it done. All he asked for was a glass of iced tea. Five years ago, at age 71, my father spent five hours putting together a swing set for my daughter.

On the morning of January 16, 1996, my sister telephoned me: my father was in the hospital with an aneurysm(动脉瘤) in Florida. I got on an airplane immediately, and on the way I realized that I hadn't communicated with him as much as I'd always wanted to. I vowed(发誓) that when I arrived, I would have a long talk with him. I arrived in Florida at 1:00 am, only to find that my father, at the age of 76, had passed away at 9:12 pm. This time it was he who did not have time to talk, or time to wait for me.
