If you are a human, you can’t help but experience the time when everything seems to be going wrong and you feel as if your life is completely out of controlIt is during the low time that words of encouragement from family, friends, coworkers or even strangers can boost your spiritsIt is also during the low time that destructive words can be devastating毁灭性的 and make you sink deeper and deeper into depression

For example, consider this story about a group of frogs who were traveling through the woods when two of them fell into a deep pit深坑).All of the other frogs gathered around the pitWhen they saw how deep the pit was, they told the two unfortunate frogs they would never get out

The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump out of the pitThe other frogs kept telling them to stopFinally, one of the two frogs took notice of what the other frogs were saying and simply gave upHe diedThe other frog continued to jump as hard as he couldOnce again the crowd of frogs shouted at him to stop the painThe more they shouted, the harder he jumped and finally he made it

When he got out, the other frogs asked him why he continued to jump when they were all shouting at him to tell him to give upThe frog explained to them that he was a little bit deafHe thought they were encouraging him the whole time

Every time you have a chance to say either something positive or negative to another human being, do choose the chance to say something positive! Don’t let those opportunities get away from youYour words have a large amount of powerUse them wiselyYou really never know just how much they can mean to someone else

60Why did the frog that succeeded in jumping to safety neglect忽视 the other frogs comments?

ABecause he would like to jump out of the pit

BBecause he could hardly hear what the other frogs said

CBecause he didn’t want to give up his hope

DBecause he had a positive attitude toward life

61What can we infer from the first paragraph?

AThere is no way to go when we go wrong

BLife depends on encouragement

CDestructive words will lead to death

DWords are playing an important role around us

62The writer mainly wants to tell us ________ in the last paragraph

Athe power of words                         Bpositive words

Cnegative words                            Dthe opportunities to say something

Along the river banks of the Amazon and the Orinoco there lives a bird that swims before it can fly, flies like a fat chicken, eats green leaves, has the stomach of a cow and has claws () on its wings when young. They build their homes about 4.6m above the river, an important feature (特征) for the safety of the young. It is called the hoatzin.

In appearance, the birds of both sexes look very much alike with brown on the back and cream and red on the underside. Its most striking feature, though, is only found in the young.

Baby hoatzins have a claw on the leading edge of each wing and another at the end of each wing tip. Using these four claws, together with the beak (), they can climb about in the bushes, looking very much like primitive(远古的) birds must have done. When the young hoatzins have learned to fly, they lose their claws.

During the drier months between December and March hoatzins fly about the forest in groups of 20 to 30 birds, but in April, when the rainy season begins, they collect together in smaller living units of two to seven birds for producing purposes.

I came to study in the United States a year ago. Yet I did not know the real American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court.

After the accident , my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day . But the next day , he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done . I was astonished . He had good reason to charge me , he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury , I’d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer .Now that he had helped me find a good doctor , it was only fair that I should pay him .But every time I went to see the doctor , I had to wait about 50 minutes . He would see two or three patients at the same time ,and often stop treating one so as to see another . Yet he charged me $115 each time . The final examination report consisted of ten lines , and it cost me $215. My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met . But after that he avoided seeing me at all .    Don’t you just hate it when you have to take an important phone call and you’re surrounded by potential eavesdroppers(潜在偷听者)? You either have to whisper or go outside to keep the conversation private, which is not good. Now Hushme aims to fix this problem by muffling your voice and making you look like Bane in the film Batman.

Hushme is a strange high-tech mask(口罩)that blocks the sound of the wearer’s voice so that people nearby can’t hear what is being said. It connects to your phone via Blucetooth and comes with a pair of earphones. When you get a private call, all you have to do is put the mask on and it will do the rest. The pair of thick pads over your mouth does a good job of muffling your voice, but to ensure nothing gets through. Hushme also has speakers that play a variety of sounds when you speak.

The Hushme mask, which comes in a variety of colors, can be worn around the neck, like a regular pair of earphones, and attaches in front of your mouth thanks to a couple of very powerful magnets(磁铁). It’s not yet clear how comfortable speaking with this Bane-like mask over your mouth really is, or how effective its speech muffling ability is, so we know so far is that it makes you look strange. The sound choices for covering your voice currently include wind, ocean, rain, birds, monkey, but new ones could be added in the future.

During an earthquake, you should know what to do. If the earthquake strikes while you’re inside a house, you should lie on the floor under a strong table or other furniture. If there is no furniture, you can cover your head with your arms and keep still in the corner of the room. You should keep away from windows, glass walls, or anything that can fall.

If you are in bed, hold firmly onto your bed and make use of a pillow to safeguard your head. You may use a doorway but only when it is close to you. It should also be considered whether it is strong enough to deal with the load.

If you are running out, do not use lifts, even if they work. Electricity may go out at any time. Many injuries happen when people try to rush out. This means you ought to stay in your house or perhaps wherever you are.

When you stay outdoors, you should stay far from buildings, power wires or lights. You should be in the open until the quake stops. Remember that many earthquake deaths outside the house come from falling-apart walls, flying glass and other falling things.

If an earthquake strikes and you are driving, you should pull up to the side of the highway and stop as quickly as possible. You ought not to stop under trees, buildings or energy wires. Don’t stop in the middle of the street as it could trouble others.

When trapped, you shouldn’t move. Your mouth should be covered with a piece of clothing or a handkerchief. This is because it is possible for you to breathe in some dust. Do not shout whenever possible. You should only shout in the end to get help from rescuers.

32. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?

A. To tell us the dangers of an earthquake.

B. To tell us what to do before an earthquake.

A. lie still on the floor

B. stay near the window

C. stay in the center of the room

D. keep still in the corner of the room

34. According to the passage, during an earthquake, you’d better not

C. How to make use of a handkerchief in an earthquake.

Most of us have lost our wallet at some stage in our lives. But few would imagine having it returned after a nearly seven-decade gap. Edward Parker dropped his wallet in 1950 into an inaccessible spot behind a bookshelf, while working as an electrician, repairing World War Two bomb damage in the palace. The wallet stayed there until this year when a builder, doing some restoration work, finally found it.

The wallet is a time capsule(时光胶囊). Its leather and webbing has long ago started to disintegrate. But it contains numerous pictures of family, invoices, receipts, old union cards, results of a chest X-ray (sent to him in 1948, the same year as the NHS was founded), a national service card dated 9 December 1944 and a medical insurance card. His business cards—E Parker, Electrical Contractor—seem almost original. Reflecting the typical methods of contact of the time, they have an address but no telephone number.

A month ago I was speaking a press officer Lambeth Palace and he mentioned that the wallet had just been handed in. We thought it might be nice to try and work out whose it was and give it back to the family. Edward Parker is a pretty common name, but his medical card contained two places of residence—Poets Road and Springdale Road in north London. From this, Islington Council were able to find details of a marriage between Edward Parker and Constance Butler in 1947.

That information was enough to work out that he was still alive and in a care home in Essex, so I went to visit him. Now 89, Edward has dementia (痴呆), but he was clearly happy to get the wallet and in particular, the photographs back. He pointed out pictures of his mother and father, his brother, his cousins and his wife Constance, who was with him when I visited. He hadn't seen a picture of his father since he lost the wallet, Constance, 90, says.

24. It can be inferred that Edward Parker ___________.

 A. always lost his wallet                   B. once participated in World War II

 C. once worked as a builder                      D. once worked as electrical technician

25. What’s the main idea of the second paragraph?

 A. The producer of the wallet.                B. The material of the wallet.

 C. The contents of the wallet.                      D. The shape of the wallet.

26. What does the underlined word “disintegrate” in the second paragraph mean?

  A. Keep       B. Damage      C. Disappear      D. Destroy

27. What plays a key role in returning the wallet?

   A. Medical card.                          B. Business card.

C. Old union card.                               D. National service card.
