Here is a statistic that will surprise you. More young people are killed each year by sleepy drivers than by drunk drivers. This proves one thing.   16    How are we dealing with the problem? Sleep clinics(诊所)appears all over the United States. They are always working to find out more about sleep.

Driving when tired can be dangerous. During the daytime, over half of drivers report feeling sleepy at some point. At night, over 80 percent of drivers sometimes get sleepy. And here is the most frightening of all.    17

What is going on here? One thing is that people are not getting enough sleep. One person out of three gets by on less than six hours a night.    18    Others fall asleep easily, but then wake up time after time. Few people get enough of the deep sleep they need to feel really rested.

Here are some facts to remember. Believe it or not, people need seven to nine hours of nighttime sleep to keep healthy. During that sleep, a person's immune system (免疫系统) is built up. This helps fight off diseases.    19     It will make a person feel refreshed. But it cannot make up for the lack(缺乏)of nighttime sleep.

What if you are a person with real sleeping problems? What if you have tried all the home treatment like hot milk? You might consider going to a sleep clinic.    20  They will study your sleep problems, and you will not have to pay anything.

A. Too much sleep may make you tired.

B. Many such places look for volunteers.

C. Many people have trouble falling asleep.

D. Getting enough sleep can be a big problem.

E. Sleep is part of a person's daily activity cycle.

F. And taking a short sleep in the daytime does not really help.

G. Almost one-quarter of all drivers have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Memories of Christmas

For me, Christmas always began in the middle of the cold, windy month of November. My sister, Alison, and I sat down in front of the fire and wrote a letter to Father Christmas telling him about all the presents we wanted. We seriously wrote “Father Christmas, the North Pole” on the envelope, before giving them to our mother to post.

With December our excitement grew each day - as we opened the new year calendar, Christmas cards arrived in the post, Christmas lights appeared in the streets, and we attended the town carol service. And of course, there was snow everywhere. Enough snow to make snowmen, and to have exciting snowball fights in the school playground.

On Christmas Eve, the whole family helped to decorate the house, put up the Christmas tree, the decorations and the balloons. Then, in the afternoon, when Auntie Kathleen and my two cousins arrived, everything was ready. Before we went to bed, we left some wine and biscuits for Father Christmas and then put our stockings at the end of our beds. We tried to stay awake as long as possible to see Father Christmas but the next thing we knew it was morning. Christmas morning!

At the bottom of the bed was the stocking, now full of all kinds of small presents. Lunch was always late, but what a lunch! A big turkey with all the vegetables followed by Christmas pudding. I like turkey breast the best. I put so much food in my mouth sometimes that it was hard to swallow. We sang Christmas carols happily, laughed at jokes, put on silly paper hats and laughed again.

After lunch, the adults slept on the sofas in front of the Queen’s speech on television while we all played cards. Then we had tea, with a huge Christmas cake covered with snowmen. It didn’t seem possible, but we carried on eating. By bedtime all of the children were very tired. As soon as we turned off the light, we all fell into a deep, happy sleep.

17. What happened on Christmas Eve.

C. The writer saw Father Christmas.

18. Why did they laugh?

      A. The Christmas carols were happy songs.

请阅读下面短文,并按要求以Our Life Rests on Our Choice为题,用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

Life is a matter of choice. Seemingly, it means a choice of concrete (具体的) things. But in fact, it means choosing a way of life. Life is to be lived and enjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about.

Hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the threat from the life-and death disease --- SARS. Yet, even during those dreadful times, some suffering people remained optimistic. Instead of wearing white masks, some people turned to color1 ful ones, and thus displayed a happy mood. And some creative people dubbed SARS to mean SMILE AND REMAIN SMILING. People who survive these kinds of circumstances decide in their minds to carry on in spite of the hardships.

Although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn gifts and even avoid unexpected disasters and adversities (逆境), we do have the right to choose to live optimistically, to love our lives, to have dreams, and to cherish hopes.

Every morning when we get up, we have a choice of how we want to approach life that day.

【写作内容】

1. 用约30个单词写出上文的概要;

2. 用约120个词就“Our Life Rests on Our Choice” 谈谈你的看法和感受,内容包括:

  1)简要叙述你对“Our Life Rests on Our Choice”的理解;

  2)请举例说明你会选择怎样的人生态度;

  3)简要叙述你这样选择的理由。(至少2点)

Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there's a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most situations these people are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a computer. “You've got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”                                                                               The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune (运气) there are thousands more whose longing (渴望) is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer (自由撰稿人), I had no chance of being successful at all; What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn't even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used type-writer and felt like a real writer.

After a year or so, however, I still hadn't gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely(几乎不) made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn't going to be one of those people who die wondering (胡思乱想), what if? I would keep putting my dream to the test—even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadowland of hope, and anyone with dream must learn to live there.

29. The passage is meant to ________.

A. warn young people of the hardship that a successful writer has to experience

B. advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional (职业的)writer

C. Show young people it's unrealistic (不现实的)for a writer to gain wealth and fame

D. encourage young people to make efforts to be a writer

30. What can be concluded(推理) from the passage?

A. Real writers often find their work interesting and rewarding.

B. A writer's success depends on luck rather than on effort.

C. Famous writers usually live in the state of being poor and lonely.

D. The chances for a writer to become successful are small.

31. “Shadowland” in the last sentence refers to ________.

A. the wonderland one often dream about

B. the bright future that one is looking forward to

C. a world that exists only in one's imagination

D. the uncertainty before one's final goal is reached

There are four of us now in the house, but over time I've had nine people come in and move on to other places. We'd all be in___39___if we hadn't banded together.

I took the bus to work for many years. No one knew each other; the passengers all sat there sleepily in the morning. The bus was cheerless and silent.

One of the passengers was a small gray-haired man who took the bus to the center for senior citizens every morning. No one ever paid very much attention to him.

One July morning he said good morning to the driver and smiled. The driver nodded guardedly(戒备地). The rest of us were silent.

The next day, the old man boarded with a big smile and said in a loud voice: “A very good morning to you all!” Some of us looked up, amazed, and murmured “Good Morning” in reply.

The following weeks, our friend was dressed in a nice old suit and tie. His thin hair had been carefully combed. He said good morning to us every day and we gradually began to nod and talk to each other.

One morning he even had a bunch of wild flowers in his hand. The driver turned around smiling and asked: “Have you got yourself a girlfriend, Charlie?” We never got to know if his name really was “Charlie”, but he nodded shyly and said yes. The other passengers whistled and clapped at him. Charlie waved the flowers before he sat down on his seat.

Every morning after that Charlie always brought flowers. Some passengers also brought flowers for him. The bus became a happy place.

Then, one morning, as autumn was closing in, Charlie wasn’t waiting at his usual stop. When he wasn’t there the next day and the day after that, we started wondering if he was sick or—hopefully – on holiday somewhere.

When we came nearer to the center for senior citizens, one of the passengers asked the driver to wait. We all held our breaths when he went to the door.

The old gentle man was fine, but one of his close friends had died over the weekend. How silent we were the rest of the way to work.

The next Monday Charlie was waiting at the stop, stooping (弯腰) a bit more, a little bit more gray, and without a tie. Inside the bus was silent. Even though no one had talked about it, all of us sat there silently, our eyes filled with tears and a bunch of wild flowers in our hands.

32. From the passage, we can infer that             .

A. The atmosphere on the bus was cheerful and lively at first.

B. People were surprised at the old man’s first greeting.

Blogs(博客)are the place where young people go to reveal their souls, and even to vent(发泄).

Many people enjoy the freedom in blogging. Some, however, find that putting one’s life online can have a price. Some students in America got suspensions (暂停) because on their blogs they posted threatening words to their teachers.
Recent surveys found that nearly a fifth of teens who have access to the Web have their own blogs. And 38% of teens say they read other people’s blogs. By comparison, about a tenth of adults have their own blogs and a quarter say they read other people’s online journals.
With the development of the Internet, more and more people will be engaged in blogging.
In another survey, 79% of teens agreed that people at their age aren’t careful enough when giving out information about themselves online. Besides, careless blogging can also affect blog viewers. When you are angry or frustrated, your blog is the first place you turn to. The words you post then may not be rational which you may regret later. To minimize (
减少) the negative effect, change the permission setting and make such posts “private” so that only you can read them.
As long as you are careful with what you post, blogging is a great means of staying in touch with friends and displaying one’s creative works.

They are learning about body language, as well as what to say, when it comes to finding a job.

Job trainers said when a person walks through the door for an interview he or she has about seven seconds to make a good first impression.

April Garner at Horry Georgetown Technical College said nonverbal skills are essential in getting a job.

She said, “Eye contact is very important. Eye contact can convey whether or not you are sincere or honest about a particular answer.”

Garner explained what you do with your hands can tell an employer a lot about a person. “Do not cross your arms. Crossing your arms can convey that you are unapproachable. Twisting of the hair conveys nervousness. ”

She said using small gestures is okay, but just don't overdo it.

“People talk with their hands and their arms and they are waving them around like they are bringing in airplanes” commented Garner.

Before you even open your mouth an employer can judge on looks alone.

So dress for success, give a firm handshake and get to your interview early so you can have time to calm any nerves.

Also, a person trying to get a job can try breathing techniques before your interview. This helps a person relax and lower your blood pressure.

Garner said people don't realize how controlling your breathing also stops you from blushing or appearing nervous.

When I was nine years old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasn’t very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldn’t catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, “Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish”, I remember being even more upset then because, “I’m not a fish!” I didn’t know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned(推论), how could what I think influence what a fish does?

As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish don’t have any eyelids(眼皮) and the sun hurts their eyes… The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them.

When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need to think like salespeople.” But it didn’t completely make sense. My dad never once said, “If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.” Years later, with great efforts to promote(提高) long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters.
