Time and tide wait no man. My mother is becoming a middle-age woman quietly. She had been busy running after us all the years. My father is very busy every day outside. But the heavy burden falls on my mother's shoulder. Because my school is far from my home, I have to go to school by the train and my mother sees me off at the station every time. I often choose a seat where is close to the window, so I can see her. However, I always can't help run tears from my eyes. All the buildings and people outside the window disappear. I wave gentle to my mother and I look at her till the view of her back disappears. Up to now, even if he is busy, she still does it as usual. The view of my mother's back will never change in my heart.

In the US, people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don’t know. This means a hostess may not seat a small group until a small table is available, even if a large one is. If you are sitting at a table with people you don’t know, it is impolite to light up a cigarette without first asking if it will disturb them.

At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap (水龙头)water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill(重续).

Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing time for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day.

Serving in restaurants is often large; too large for many people. If you can’t finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a “doggie bag”. It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you’re taking the food for yourself.

Tips are not usually added to the check. They are not included in the price of the meal, either. A tip of about 15% is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. In some restaurants, a check is brought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress brings you your change.

My community and suite are still recovering from the disaster that struck recently. A wall of storms with hurricane force winds struck late on a Friday evening knocking down trees, blocking roads, damaging homes, and destroying power lines.

Hundreds of people suddenly found themselves in the dark without water, electricity, air conditioning, telephones, the Internet, and television. They found themselves cut off from the modem world enduring uncomfortable heat.

The most amazing thing happened, however, as the reality of the crisis sank in: it brought out the best in us. While there were a few acts of selfishness and stealing they were covered by the wave of love that came from the hearts of so many.

People shared their food, ice, and gas. People who still had power opened their homes to those who had none. People rushed out to clear roads and homes. Selfless power crews worked around the clock to repair the damage and restore electricity. People gathered to talk, share hugs and offer words of hope and faith that God would see them through it all. Strangers came together as one family to help each other in this time of great need.

It was such a joy seeing all these people acting like true Children of God under the most trying circumstances. Life's disasters often strike all of us. No one is spared. We all get hurt and challenged. How we respond to them, though, is up to us. We can let them bring out the worst or the best in us. We can react to them like demons of selfishness or like angels of love.

May you always bring the best from your heart and soul to whatever life may throw at you then May you live all of your days here with so much love that Heaven sings and God smiles.

A. Power lines were restored.    B. People were blocking the roads.

C. Electricity supply was cut off.    D. The unbearable heat killed people.

5. Why did the reality bring out the best in people?

A. Because there were no acts of selfishness and stealing.

B. Because people were busy repairing the damaged roads.

C. Because Children of God got all of people together here.

D. Because people are only too ready to help others selflessly.

6. What docs “trying” in paragraph 5 mean?

A. easy.    B. difficult.

C. convenient.    D. comfortable.

7. What suggestion does the writer give when it comes lo difficulties?

A. Throw your heart to life.

B. Leave your soul to demons.

C. Face difficulties with love.

D. Choose whatever you like.

What Theresa Loe is doing proves that a large farm isn’t a prerequisite  for a modern grow-your-own lifestyle. On a mere 1/10 of an acre in Los Angeles,Loe and her family grow, can(装罐)and preserve much of the food they consume.

Loe is a master food preserver, gardener and canning expert. She also operates a website, where she shares her tips and recipes, with the goal of demonstrating that everyone has the ability to control what’s on their plate.

Canning is a natural extension of the planting she does. With every planted food,Loe noted, there’s a moment when it’s bursting with its absolute peak flavor.“I try and keep it in a time capsule in a canning jar.”Loe said.“Canning for me is about knowing what’s in your food, knowing where it comes from.”

In addition to being more in touch with the food she’s eating, another joy comes from passing this knowledge and this desire for good food to her children:“Influencing them and telling them your opinion on not only being careful what we eat but understanding  the bigger picture,”she said,“that if we don’t take care of the earth,no one will.”

It’s easy to blame (责备) technology for having damaged our social abilities, since most people feel more comfortable chatting online than meeting face to face. But this is actually a “chicken-and-egg” problem. It’s possible that social networking is damaging our ability to socialize offline. As people rely more and more on typed words and emoji, their emotional sensitivity is decreasing. “You can’t learn non-verbal expression of feelings from a screen in the way you can learn it from face-to-face communication,” Yalda Uhls, a researcher at the University of California said. “If you’re not practicing face-to-face communication, you could be losing important social skills.”

A study in 2013 found that people unlocked their phones more than 100 times on average per day. Constantly checking your phone----a symptom of the phenomenon called FOMO (fear of missing out)----is also distracting people from face-to-face communication.

But for people who already suffer from social anxiety, the Internet is a safe barrier (屏障) for them to function normally. Behind that barrier, they feel more comfortable saying what they want without the risk of embarrassment. For them it’s much easier to look at a phone than to look at someone in the eye. Social media may even help with offline communication. In a study, US teenagers who are afraid to talk to the opposite sex were asked to approach a boy or a girl online first before talking to them in person. “Once they felt like they were doing okay online, then they could continue the conversation face to face in a more comfortable state,” a researcher said. “The anxiety was lessened by using technology.”

C. They can say whatever they want.

D. It can free them from social anxiety.

55. According to the last paragraph, how do teenagers benefit from social media?

A. They get less nervous in offline communication.

B. They find it easy to talk to the opposite sex.

C. They learn to chat with others online.

He knew that his friends all had bicycles. It was hard to hang out with people when you were the only one without a bicycle. He thought about what he could do. There was no point asking his parents, for he knew they had no extra money.

There was only one way to get money, and that was to earn it. He would have to find a job. He decided to ask Mr Clay for advice.

“Well, you can start right here,” said Mr Clay. “You see, my windows need cleaning and my car needs washing.”

That was the beginning of James’ part-time job. For the next three months he worked every day after finishing his homework. He took dogs for walks, cleared out cupboards and mended books.

The day finally came when James counted his money and found $94.32. He wasted no time and went down to the shop to pick up the bicycle he wanted. He rode home proudly, looking forward to showing his new bicycle to his friends. Have you ever run out of coffee or tea? Found no eggs in the fridge? No bread for the sandwich and the nearest shop is too far away? Well, all that can change in the future.

If all goes well, the intelligent future kitchen will soon help solve all your problems. In the future, all kitchen units will be connected to the Internet. The intelligent future kitchen will give wise advice on planning your menu for the day. Worried about your weight? — It will tell you the right diet and what is good for your health. It will even keep in mind your likes and dislikes!

Designed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, this smart kitchen promises to pay attention to all your needs. The computer’s system will help keep an “eye” on the fridge. If the fridge is empty, the kitchen will automatically call and place an order at the local supermarket. So you don’t have to worry about it at all.

You get home late, and don’t know what to make from the collection of ingredients (原料) in your fridge. A while back you might have ordered a take-out but now, instead of worrying about eating a collection of this and that, you’re excited. You can pull out each vegetable, and pass each one in front of a web camera next to your fridge. A few moments later, a screen on your fridge would display a tasty recipe.

After dinner, you take your plates to a box next to the sink. You don't have to clean them, your machine does. It produces new plates every time you need to eat. Later in the evening, you phone your other half, who is on a business trip half-way around the world. As you drink your cup of hot coffee, it makes your other half’s cup change color on the other side of the world, another special way to keep in touch.

B. by finding a good housekeeper

C. after you call the supermarket

D. after you buy great amounts of food

Last week I took part in geography research study group. Our topic was environmental pollution and protection. We took a variety of pictures what show the present pollution conditions of our city. In our anxiety, there are still a lot of people who does silly things to our surroundings. Some people throw rubbish anywhere, some cars give off harm gases, and waste water was poured into the rivers by some factories. Better still, people sometimes have to make his way through dusty winds as a result of the pollution. Through our research, we suggest that everybody pays more attention to our environment as before and some measures should be taken to protect it.
