Women are friendly. But men are more competitive. Why? Researchers have found it's all down to the hormone oxytocin (荷尔蒙催生素). Although known as the love hormone, it affects the sexes differently.

"Women tend to be social in their behavior. They often share with others. But men tend to be competitive. They are trying to improve their social status," said Professor Ryan.

Generally, people believe that the hormone oxytocin is let out in our body in various social situations and our body creates a large amount of it during positive social interactions (互动) such as falling in love or giving birth.

But in a previous experiment Professor Ryan found that the hormone is also let out in our body during negative social interactions such as envy.

Further researches showed that in men the hormone oxytocin improves the ability to recognize competitive relationships, but in women it raises the ability to recognize friendship.

Professor Ryan's recent experiment used 62 men and women aged 20 to 37. Half of the participants(参与者)received oxytocin. The other half received placebo (安慰剂).

After a week, the two groups switched with participants. They went through the same procedure with the other material.

Following each treatment, they were shown some video pictures with different social interactions. Then they were asked to analyze the relationships by answering some questions. The questions were about telling friendship from competition. And their answers should be based on gestures, body language and facial expressions.

The results indicated that, after treatment with oxytocin, men's ability to correctly recognize competitive relationships improved, but in women it was the ability to correctly recognize friendship that got better.

Professor Ryan thus concluded: "Our experiment proves that the hormone oxytocin can raise people's abilities to better distinguish different social interactions. And the behavior differences between men and women are caused by biological factors (因素) that are mainly hormonal."

Abebe Bikila stared at the athletes from his own country, who were competing in the Olympic Games. The name Ethiopia (埃塞俄比亚) was written across the back of each athlete's uniform (衣服). As Abebe Bikila watched, he made up his mind to become one of those athletes.

In 1932, Abebe Bikila was born in a poor family in a small town near Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. As a child, he always ran to school a few kilometres away from his home. After leaving school, Abebe Bikila went into the army. He was later found to be excellent as a marathon (马拉松赛跑) runner. In 1960, he was on his way to Rome as a member of the Ethiopian Olympic team.

But Abebe Bikila ran the marathon this time wearing shoes and won it! He beat his own record in 1960 by more than four minutes. That made him the first runner to continuously win two Olympic marathons.

In 1968, a car accident left the great runner unable to walk for ever. Abebe Bikila died in 1973. A huge crowd, including the then ruler of Ethiopia, Atse Haile Selassie, gathered as he was laid to rest. Abebe Bikila will always be remembered for his great ability, love of country, and true Olympic spirit. In the heart of all sports fans, Abebe Bikila remains an excellent Olympic athlete.

How to remember names easily

Not everyone is good at remembering names.   36   What’s worse is that someone else is with you and you know you’ll have to introduce the two of them to each other. Here are some strategies that may help you remember names easily.

Listen attentively.   37   Listen attentively to the name and concentrate on the face. Don’t look at the person’s clothes or her jewelry (首饰). If you did not hear the name clearly, ask the name to be repeated.

Find connections. The person you are introduced to may be a doctor, a mother of five or a cancer survivor.   38   The details may come out during your conversation or another person may provide them at a later time.

Repeat the name.   39   If the conversation is short, once should be enough. For a longer conversation, you can repeat her name two or three times, but never use her name in every sentence.

Refer the name to another person. You can tell a friend or a family member that you met, for example, Anna Smith at a party. Describe a little about Anna.   40       However, this is an exercise for you to remember the person’s name.

A.     Write down the name when necessary.

B.     You’d better connect the details about the person to her name.

C.    Of course your friend may not care so much for this information.

D.    Pronounce and spell the name so that you can remember it.

E.     Whenever you are introduced to someone, keep your mind on it.

F.     During the course of your conversation with anyone new to you, use her name once in a while.

G.    You may have been in situations where you see a familiar face but you just can’t remember her name.

Where do the turtles go?

Every summer, thousands of endangered green sea turtles climb onto beaches around the world. Each mother sea turtle produces 100 or more eggs in a hole, and covers the hole with sand before she swims away.

Two months later, the eggs hatch(孵化), and the baby turtles climb out of the sand and swim into the ocean. They don’t reappear until they have grown as large as dinner plates. Until now, no one knows where the baby turtles go or what they do.

“if we don’t know where these little turtles are, we can’t protect them,” says Kim Reich, who helps solve part of the mystery.

Her teacher, Karen Bjorndal, has studied green sea turtles for more than 30 years. Every year, Bjorndal goes to the Bahamas Islands. Many young sea turtles come here to live and eat at the end of their childhood.

These turtles are the only sea turtles that live as plant eaters. In fact, their name may be a result of what they eat. The turtles don’t look green but they do have green fat. Scientists learned that the turtles eat green sea plants, which may turn their fat green.

Between 2002 and 2004, Bjorndal caught 44 green sea turtles in the Bahamas. After testing them, she found something to support the 20-year-old idea: baby green sea turtles eat meat before they turn to a diet of plants. In fact, they eat animals that live in the open ocean.

Scientists still need to find where exactly green sea turtles grow. We now know that baby green sea turtles are out in the open ocean, but the open ocean is a big place.

It is really a problem,” says Bjorndal. The discovery may help us do a better job of protecting this sea animal.

Building Trust in a Relationship Again

Trust is a learned behavior that we gain from past experiences. 36 . That is a risk. But you can’t be successful when there’s a lack of trust in a relationship that results from an action where the wrongdoer takes no responsibility to fix the mistake.

Unfortunately, we’ve all been victims of betrayal(背叛). Whether we’ve been suffering from, lied to, misled, or cheated on, there are different levels of losing trust. Sometimes people simply can’t trust anymore.37. It’s understandable, but if you’re willing to build trust in a relationship again, we have some steps you can take to get you there.

38  Having confidence in yourself will help you make better choices because you can see what the best outcome would be for your well-being.

39  If you’ve been betrayed, you are the victim of your circumstance. But there’s a difference between being a victim and living with a “victim mentality”. At some point in all of our lives, we’ll have our trust tested or violated(侵犯).

You didn’t lose “everything”. Once trust is lost, what is left? Instead of looking at the situation from this hopeless angle, look at everything you still have and be thankful for all of the good in your life. 40 Instead, it’s a healthy way to work through the experience to allow room for positive growth and forgiveness.

  A. Learn to really trust yourself.

  B. Stop regarding yourself as the victim.

  C. It is putting confidence in someone.

  D. Remember that you can expect the best in return.

  E. They’ve been too badly hurt and they can’t bear to let it happen again.

  F. Seeing the positive side of things doesn’t mean you’re ignoring what happened.

  G. This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationships.
