The first-ever direct China-to-Britain freight train (货运列车) arrived in London last week. It was the 61        (late) evidence of China’s efforts to redevelop the “Silk Road” trade routes that once stretched from Asia to Europe.

62      (travel) from China through Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany, Belgium and France for 18 days, the train finally arrived in London. Inside the 68 containers 63 (be) household goods, clothing, cloth, bags and suitcases. “This is 64     (two) as quick as sea and it’s much, much cleaner and cheaper than air freight,” said Philippa Edmunds, 65      works at the British Campaign for Better Transport.

But the train itself may be more important than the goods 66      was carrying. Observers say the trip had a political message: that China is developing new trade routes and new markets. China needs to find more places 67        (sell) the goods it makes. That is the 68      (believe) of Jie Yu from the London School of Economics. “The domestic market in China now seems not to be very promising, so the Chinese are 69

(desperate) looking for the new markets. And obviously that freight train serves 70     a very good vehicle for the Chinese manufacturers and may help restore the business confidence inside China. ”

About three decades ago, China was known as the “Bicycle Kingdom”. But the two-wheeled approach of transport’s popularity began to fade, with many bikes soon replaced by their fuel-powered competitors.

But recent months have seen a repopulality of the humble bike across China, with an increasing number of people choosing cycling instead of driving to schools, to workplaces or to do sightseeing. The introduction of bike-sharing schemes, pioneered by start-up company like Ofo and Mobike, has brought the trend to a new level. According to data shown by iResearch Consulting Group, the first week of this year saw 5.85 million active users of Mobike while Ofo had 1.4 million active users.

People can unlock the shared bikes by simply using their smartphone. The bikes are equipped with GPS and can be left anywhere in public for the next user. They’re popular among many Chinese people as they provide an effective solution to the “last mile” problem, which refers to the final leg of a person’s journey.

However, the schemes have also led to problems such as illegal parking, damage on purpose and theft. To deal with these problems, the company came up with the idea of encouraging people to return the bikes to stations by rewarding free time for their next rides.

9.  Why did the two-wheeled approach of transport become less popular?

Norm Pethrick, a 36-year-old man in Australia’s northern city Darwin, was praised on Thursday for jumping onto a crocodile’s back to save his wife Wendy at Litchfield National Park, a popular tourist spot southwest of Darwin, a local newspaper reported.

Dr. Ellen Bronson of the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore always wanted to work with animals. Unlike many animal-loving little girls, though, her first idea was to be a naturalist. If a naturalist is someone who sits in the woods and observes animals and takes notes, then that’s exactly what she was doing at the time. Dr. Bronson grew up “in the middle of nowhere”, and her parents didn’t let her watch TV. “So I spent a lot of time hanging out in the woods because there was not a lot to do otherwise,” she says. “I had a funny notebook that my parents still have, where each page is about a certain animal.”

When she got a little older, being an animal doctor seemed like a better choice than working with animals in the forest, and the success in giving medical help to them satisfied her hugely, but she says that even the cases that don’t work out as well can be meaningful. “You also have the failures, which are hard at the time, but they help not just you but the whole zoo learn,” She says.

And, of course, another advantage of the job is getting to work with really cool animals. “I really like the animals that feed on meat — they’re very tough, and you can get them through hard times,” she says.

Finally, another advantage of her job is how often she gets to work with an animal over its life. “We’re there doing medical examination when they’re born, we watch them grow up,” she says. “And we watch them as they age. We help them age peacefully and help them be pain-free, and then we’re also there when they die. That is something very special.”

25. What can we learn from the second paragraph?

    A. Giving animals medical help is always Ellen’s dream.

    B. Even failures can also mean something to Ellen.
