It's not right for an adult to leave a child locked in a parked car in the burning heat while they chat with a friend or do anything else without supervising their child. This kind of behavior is so wrong that states have even carried out laws allowing good citizens to rescue trapped kids. Unluckily one Georgia man learned that these laws aren't true to pets after he decided to save a dog and was arrested(逮捕).
According to a story from USA Today, Michael Hammons, used his wife's wheelchair leg to break the window of a parked car after hearing from bystanders that there was a dog inside.
One witness(目击者)told reporters that“if it is 80 degrees outside, within 30 minutes, it will be 114 degrees inside a car, even with the windows broken.” Bystanders had reportedly already phoned 911 before and were waiting for police to arrive, but for Hammons there was no time to lose.
Police were forced to take action after the owner of both the dog and car came out of the store and requested police arrest Hammons. Oconee County Chief Deputy Lee Weems told USA Today, “We would not have made those charges on our own.” But the owner of the car insisted that Hammons be charged with criminal trespassing(非法入侵).WWW.ziyuanku.com
The dog's owner said that she had only been gone five minutes, even though bystanders said it was actually much longer. No matter how long it actually was, the decision to leave her dog locked in a car in 80 degree weather wasn't a bright one on her part. Interestingly enough, USA Today reports that Georgia state law does allow a person to break a window to save a child in a hot or cold car, just not a pet.

For a year and half, kids sent hurtful messages like “You are ugly.” or “Why are you still alive?” to Rebecca Sedwick. In 2013, Rebecca, then 12, couldn’t stand it anymore. She took her own life near her home in Florida. Soon afterward, Trisha Prabhu read about the story. “I was surprised and heart-broken,” said Trisha, now 15, who is from Naperville, Illinois, “I know that I had to do something to stop this from happening again.”
Trisha did some research. Studies show that one fourth to half of all teens in the US have been cyberbullied (网络欺凌). Experts say that if you are ever bullied online, you should tell a trusted adult. Tell the cyberbully to stop, and prevent him or her from contacting you again. Print and save messages to share with the police. This is good advice, agrees Trisha. But these methods all take place after the bullying has already happened. Trisha had a different idea. Why not teach cyberbullies to stop before they post these messages?
Trisha’s research won awards, including a prize in the Google Science Fair. Then, Tresah built the ReThink app (应用软件). It is programmed to recognize words or phrases that could be hurtful. When that happens, different warning messages come out. “Don’t say things that you may regret later!” says one message. Others ask, “Are you sure you want to say this?” and “Are these words really yours?”
Now Trisha is working on a version(版本) of ReThink for computers. “I am a big dreamer,” she says. “I want to stop cyberbullying before the hurt is done.”
21. What do we know about Rebecca Sedwick?
A. She was one of Trisha’s best friends. B. She sent hurtful messages to others.
C. She ended her life at the age of 12. D. She went to Florida to study further.

A.Stop talking with the cyberbully. B.Stop the messages before they are sent.
C.Turn to your parents or close friends. D.Show the messages to the police at once.
23. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. How the ReThink app works. B. Trisha’s research on cyberbullying.
C. People’s attitudes to the ReThink app. D. The Google Science Fair.

Bad habits to drop
When unfortunate events happen in your life, you'll wonder how they all came about without realizing what had happened all resulted from bad habits. 36 and you may be a lucky dog again.
The “later” mind. It's the small steps that need to be done to settle serious problems. This principle is true to all areas of your life. For example, instead of holding off the task you've been putting off for weeks or months, work on it step by step now.
37 .Learning to say “no” is important for everyone. It's one thing to do a favor for a friend or coworker, but overextending yourself is another. There's always a nice way of saying “no”, so don't worry about hurting people's feelings.
Unhealthy addictions (瘾). 38 .Addictions can be costly to your health,so you'd better assess your addictions and figure out the easiest one to drop at the beginning.
Self doubt. Insecurities (不安全感) can hold you back and set negative thoughts that will make you feel upset or give up easily. 39 .For example, you may be overly sensitive to what others say,and this may affect the way you get along with them. To remove self doubt and go on a self-improvement journey now.
Living in the now. People usually quote (引用) the popular phrase “you only live once” and use it as an excuse for short-term pleasure. 40 ,but it's usually the long-term approach that achieves the biggest accomplishments and goals.
A.Nodding to everything
B.Drop the bad habits
C.It's true that life is short
D.Saying “no” to something
E.Carry out the following behaviors firmly
F.It can also worsen your relationships with people
G.Self-control is a key to a healthy and balanced lifestyle
Have you ever received a gift that was so dearly, not your taste that you wondered if perhaps it had been handed to you by mistake? Worse, have you ever given a present and watched your friend look as though she had opened the wrong box? Maybe she responded with a polite "Why, thank you," but you knew you had missed the mark. Why do presents sometimes go wrong? And what do your choices (good and bad) reflect about your personal qualities?
Choosing the right gift is an art, I believe. It calls for empathy -- the ability to put yourself into someone else's head and heart. We're all able to do this; in fact, we're born with a kind of natural empathy. After the earliest period of childhood, however, it needs to be reinforced (加强)--by our parents, teachers, friends. When it isn't, we're not able to understand other people's feelings as sharply. This can show in the gifts we select, and so can many other emotional (情感的) qualities.
Think back to the presents you’ve given over the past year, the time and effort you put into your selection, how much you spent, your thoughts while you were shopping, and your feelings when the receiver opened the package. Keep in mind that what you choose displays your inner world. (Of course, you may express yourself differently with different friends, relatives, and other people you know.
We live in a society where exchanging presents is an important part of communication. Ignoring the tradition won't make it go away. If you really dislike such a tradition, tell your friends ahead of time.
32. The underlined expression "you had missed the mark" means "you had failed to _____.
A. make her feel better
B. keep your friendship
C. get the expected effect
D. receive a present in return
33. Which of the following is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Natural empathy needs to be reinforced.
B. Emotional changes influence one's choice of gifts.
C. Selecting the right gift is an ability people are born with.
D. Choosing gifts requires one to understand the receivers.
34. In the third paragraph, the author tells us that________.
A. the choice of gifts reflects one's emotional qualities
B. one learns from what he did in the past
C. attention should be paid to the receivers' responses
D. one should spend more time choosing gifts
35.The best possible title for this passage is “_______”.
A. Ways of Choosing Gifts B. An Important Tradition
C. Exchanging Presents D. Message in a Gift
A newly discovered ancient Chinese map may prove that it was a Chinese navigator who first discovered America. He may have made the discovery seventy years before Columbus discovered the New World.
The map, which has gone on display in Beijing, is said to be a copy made in 1763 of a much older map dating back to 1418. It clearly describes Africa, Europe and the Americas. If it’s proven to be believable, the map would provide strong evidence to suggest that the famous Ming Dynasty sailor, Zheng He, beat Christopher Columbus, who arrived in America in 1492, to the discovery of the New World.
Liu Gang, a Chinese lawyer and map collector, bought the map in an antique store in Shanghai in 2001 for about 500 U.S. dollars. Liu Gang thinks the map supports the thesis of British author, Gavin Menzies, who in his 2003 book argued Zheng He was the first person to circumnavigate (环航) the globe and discover America sometime between 1421 and 1423. “In principle the British author Gavin is right. Before Columbus, Zheng He discovered America and the whole world. But in detail, not exactly... three years difference. I don’t think that’s a big deal.” Liu said.
Zheng He commanded a group of ships, which sailed between 1405 and 1433 at the order of the emperor during China’s Ming Dynasty. His aim was to spread the glory (光荣) of China to the world and establish trade.
59. We learn from Paragraph 1 that .

B. both the Chinese navigator and Columbus were heroes
C. the ancient map made by a Chinese navigator was just found
D. the Chinese navigator may be the first man who discovered America

A. The ancient map on display in Beijing is said to be made in 1418.
B. The ancient map, which is said to be made in 1763, has been on display in Beijing.
C. The ancient map was bought by Liu Gang, a Chinese navigator in 2001.
D. The ancient map was introduced to be listed in Gavin’ book by Liu Gang to support his idea.
61. What does the British author in his book try to argue in the passage?
A. The first person who discovered America may be Zheng He.
B. The first person to circumnavigate the globe is not worth discussing.
C. The year when Zheng He discovered America may be between 1421 and 1423.
D. The year when Christopher Columbus discovered America was ahead of 1423.
62. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

In the United States, 30 percent of the people have a “weight problem”。To many people
the cause is obvious (明显的): they eat too much. But scientific evidence (证据) does little to support this idea. Going back to America of 1910, we find that people were thinner than today, yet they ate more food. In those days people worked harder physically, walked more, used machines much less, and didn’t watch television.
Several modern studies, moreover, have
shown that fatter people don’t eat more on
average than thinner people. A 1979 study of 3,545 London office workers showed that
fat people eat less than slim (苗条的) people.
Studies also show that slim people are more active than fat people. A study by a
research group at Stanford University found the foll
owing interesting facts:
The more the man ran, the greater loss of the body fat,
The more they ran, the greater increase in food intake.
Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.

A. Yes, there is plenty of evidence.
B. Of course, there is some evidence to support this.
C. We are not sure.
D. There is hardly any scientific evidence to support this.
4.The Americans in 1910 ________.

It is five years now since I graduate from No. 6 High School. Last Saturday, the class that I was on held a get-together, which took us a long time prepare. It was indeed not easy to get in the touch with everybody and set a well time for all of us. We all enjoyed this precious day greatly, remember the time we spent together and the people they were familiar with. It was a pity which some of us were not present as they had gone to abroad for further study, but they called back or sent greeting card from different places.
In my life,I've been told that teamwork is golden. There is no "i" in "team".And for many years it is true.Living alone gets a bad rap in our society. But I've found that living alone can be a positive experience.
I'm not the first person to notice the appeal of being our own roommate—31 million people are living alone in the U.S.,making up 28 percent of the total population, according to a survey. In NYC,the number jumps to 1 in 2.Comparing that number with the 9 percent of people who lived alone in 1950,we know we have a trend on our hands.
In my opinion.many people are afraid of being totally alone. But I've learned to really enjoy my own company. When I first started living alone,I found that I could go anywhere without using my voice.Sometimes,I would stop at a grocery store and buy something I didn't need just to test that I could say "thank you" to the cashier. But then I discovered something far easier—I started talking to myself.
Living alone isn't the same thing as living lonely. When I'm feeling a need for communication,I reach out for it. Or I can pick up the phone to call my family or those roommates. When the time is right,I hope to live with a partner and even raise children. In the meantime,it's just me and me.
4.Which of the following opinion will the author probably agree with?
A.Teamwork is everything. B.Living alone can be positive.
C.Living alone means loneliness. D.Teamwork deserves criticism.
5.In paragraph 2,the author proves his point mainly .
A.by making comparison B.by presenting examples
C.by providing statistics D.by quoting(引用)famous sayings
6.The author sometimes bought what he didn't need .
A.to test his speaking ability B.to improve his communicative skills
C.to get rid of the annoying cashier D.to enjoy others' company when necessary
7.What does the author mean by the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
A.He doesn't feel lonely though living alone.
B.He still thinks it better to live with his family.
C.He can tell the difference between "alone" and "lonely".
D.He sometimes communicates with his family and friends.
