3). Listen carefully to what people say, remember important details about them (their names, their likes and dislikes), ask questions about their interests, and just take the time to learn more about them.

4). Encourage your friends: A true friend always gives courage to his friends. Never make fun of or laugh at your friends in front of others. You should come to support them.

Wang Mengshu, an expert at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said at a group discussion on the sidelines of the annual session of the National People's Congress that Wi-Fi should not be provided on high-speed trains, as it might disturb communication signals of trains and would also cost a lot in keeping trains in good condition. He also encouraged passengers to enjoy the views, instead of fixing their eyes on tiny screens of smart phones and laptops. However, on last Tuesday Beijing Youth Daily said it should be market demand that decides whether the Wi-Fi is offered on the trains or not.

An increasing number of residents, especially young white-collar workers, are addicted to their smart phones rather than face-to-face interactions, thanks to the extensive Wi-Fi coverage across the country. That partly justifies Wang's opposition to the offering of Wi-Fi on high-speed trains, because they are not supposed to be dependent on high-tech devices. It is also evident that passengers on trains without free Wi-Fi will use their smart phones and other mobile devices less. However, whether the trains should provide a free Wi-Fi service fundamentally depends on customer demand.

In other words, state-owned as it is, the China Railway Crop still has to obey relevant market rules, and provide technologically possible services to passengers if that is what they want. It cannot turn a blind eye to customers' wants "for the sake of their well-being".

Free Wi-Fi, in fact, is already available on a lot of buses and coaches. This is a natural response to their competition with trains (especially high-speed ones), which are significantly faster and safer. The bus companies have been forced to improve their services to survive. It requires proper guidance, not a total ban on the bus, to make up for the negative effects of high-end technologies, such as people's increasing addiction to smart phones.

  1. (1) Which is one of the reasons for Wang Mengshu saying no to free Wi-Fi on the train?

A . Making communication signals of trains stable. B . Not focusing on the screens of phones and laptops. C . A high cost of keeping trains in good condition. D . Missing the beautiful views throughout a journey.
  2. (2) Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the second paragraph?

A . Some people go against Wang's proposal. B . Wang's opposition proves reasonable in part. C . Most people think Wang's suggestion hard to carry out. D . Young white-collar workers consider Wang's advice right.
  3. (3) What does "market rules" in the 3rd paragraph refer to?

A . Demand depends on supply. B . The market decides purchasing power. C . Everything depends on money. D . The market is in the control of customers.
  4. (4) According to the last paragraph, the author agree       .

A . People should drop smart phones. B . Every coin has two sides. C . High-end technologies cause more side effects. D . A total ban on free Wi-Fi is reasonable.

There are many famous museums throughout the world where people can enjoy art. Washington D. C. has the National Gallery of Art (美术馆); Paris has the Louvre; London, the British Museum. Florida International University (FIU) in Miami also shows art for people to see. And it does so without a building, or even a wall for its drawings and paintings.

FIU has opened what it says is the first computer art museum in the United States. You don't have to visit the University to see the art. You just need a computer linked to a telephone.

You can call the telephone number of a University computer and connect your own computer to it. All of the art is stored in the school computer. It is computer art, produced electronically (采用电子手段) by artists in their own computers. In only a few minutes, your computer can receive and copy all the pictures and drawings.

Robert Shostak is director of the new computer museum. He says he started the museum because computer artists had no place to show their work.

A computer artist could only record his pictures electronically and send the records, or floppy discs (软盘), to others to see on their computers. He could also put his pictures on paper. But to print good pictures in paper, the computer artist needed an expensive laser (激光) printer.

Robert Shostak says the electronic museum is mostly for art or computer students at schools and universities. Many of the pictures in the museum are made by students. Mr. Shostak says the FIU museum will make computer art more fun for computer artists because more people can see it. He says artists will enjoy their work much more if they have an audience. And the great number of home computers in America could mean a huge audience for the electronic museum.

  1. (1) To see the art in FIU museum, your special needs include___________.
A . floppy discs B . a computer and a printer C . pictures and drawings on paper D . a computer connected to the museum by telephone line
  2. (2) What are stored in this museum?
A . Paintings drawn by means of computer. B . Different styles of paintings. C . Drawings done by art students of FIU. D . Old paintings
  3. (3) The museum was started when____________.
A . Robert Shostak wanted to do something for computer scientists B . Robert Shostak wanted to help computer artists C . art students needed a place to show their works D . computer scientists wanted to do something about art

Australia is a nation of pet lovers but it may be loving its animals to death because pet owners pass on rising levels of obesity(肥胖) by overfeeding their cats and dogs, the country's main animals welfare body says. Despite its image as a sports-mad country full of fit, sun-bronzed youth, Australia in reality is battling the obesity and challenging the United States as the world’s fattest nation. The problem now extends to household pets.

Obesity rates for Australia have doubled over the past 20 years, with 62 percent of men and 45 percent of women overweight. The same trend applies to household pets, with an increase in the number of overweight cats and dogs being dealt with by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(RSPCA) and even one case of a fat pet mouse. “It's a big problem, and quite reflective of what's happening in the human situation,” said Mark Lawrie, the RSPCA's chief . Australia is a nation of 20 million people, almost 4 million dogs, 2.5 million cats, 8.7 million pet birds and more than 12 million pet fish. It has one of the world's highest rates of pet ownership at 64 percent of households, compared to 62 percent in the United States and 44 percent in Britain.

Lawrie said that surveys had found that between 40 and 44 percent of dogs and more than one in three household cats were now overweight, due to poor diet and a lack of exercises. Fat cats and dogs were much easier to suffer from heart problems and liver disease. The RSPCA said low levels of exercises had an impact on pet obesity, but the key problem was over-eating.

Is it difficult for you to fall asleep at night, and almost impossible to get up in the morning? Oversleeping is often caused by a lack of sleep or a restless nighttime routine. 1 Luckily, we can do something with oversleeping.

2

Hitting the snooze ( 打盹 ) button on the alarm in the morning for five more minutes sleep can be a lot of people’s choice. However, when you hit snooze, your brain goes even deeper into your sleep cycle. By the time you hit “snooze” several more times, and finally wake up, you will feel even more tired than if you got up with your alarm. So, if possible, instead of having your alarm close to your bed, put your alarm clock somewhere that forces you to get out of bed. Besides, make morning routine positive. 3 Treat the morning like a positive experience and look forward to your day.

Adjust sleep habits

Do a relaxing activity before bed. 4 Then, keep your bedroom dark. Put up heavy curtains or shades to block the light from windows. You can also use a sleep mask to cover your eyes to help you sleep.

Talk to your doctor

When everything is tried but in vain, then speak to your doctor about problems with oversleeping. Your doctor may get you tested for sleep disorders. 5 You may also need to let him know if you are having chronic ( 慢性的 )issues with sleep. It is a serious issue. You should tell him if you suffer from headaches or back pain.

A Change morning routine

B Adjust your daily arrangements

C Stretch, get up, and let the morning light in

D It can lead to many oversleeping symptoms

E.You may try sleeping pills to get yourselves calm when necessary

F.You need to describe your specific symptoms or sleeping problems

G.This could be a warm bath, a good book, or a quiet conversation with your partner

Would you believe that the first outstanding deaf teacher in America was a Frenchman? His name was Laurent Clerc. He became a friend of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and together they founded America' s first school for the deaf.

Laurent Clerc was born in a small village near Lyons, France, on December 26, 1785. When he was one year old, he fell into a fire, losing both his hearing and his sense of smell.

At 12, Laurent entered the Royal Institution for the Deaf in Paris where he excelled in his studies. After he graduated, the school asked him to stay on as an assistant teacher.

Meanwhile, in America, Thomas Hopkins Galaudet was studying to be a minister. He was very concerned about the lack of educational opportunities for the deaf. Therefore, in 1815, Gallaudet sailed to London, England to seek ideas on how to teach deaf people. While he was there, he met a French educator of the deaf who invited him to go to Paris to spend three months learning at the Royal Institution for the Deaf, the school where Lauren Clerc was teaching. Gallaudet accepted the offer. The two men worked and studied well together. When the time came for Gallaudet to return, he asked Clerc to come with him. Clerc accepted on one condition: that he would stay in America only a short time.

The two men set sail on June 1816. The voyage across the Atlantic Ocean took 52 days; however,Clere and Gallaudet put the time to good use. Clerc studied English, and Gallaudet studied sign language. They discussed the school for the deaf which they planned to open. On the long trip, they had many conversations about education and deafness. The year after they arrived, they founded a school for the deaf in Harford, Connecticut.

At the school, Clerc led a busy life. He taught signs to Principal Gallaudet; he taught the pupils;and he taught hearing men who came to the school to study deaf education.

In 1819, Clerc married Eliza Crocker Boardman, one of his pupils. They had six children. He retired from teaching in 1858. Although he had intended to return to France, he never did. He died on July 18, 1869 in the United States.
