Dear Mum and Dad

We're having a wonderful time in Australia. There is so much to see that it is impossible for me to tell you everything. During past three days, we've travelled a lot around Sydney. We went to the zoo, on where we saw many animals that can only be found in Australia. We spent some time relaxing in the sunshine at the beach, but we went to Pitt Street and wander around for a bit while we did some shopping. Though I would like to spend more time here, the locally guide told us that we will fly to Cairns tomorrow. It's said that word cannot describe the beauty of the ocean near Cairns. Now everybody is busy packed so that we will not lose time when we set off. This time tomorrow we will be enjoying the ocean near Cairns. I can't wait!

Because I have much more to tell you, I must go to bed now so that I can get up early and get to the airport on time. Please send my best wishes to Granny and tell she that I am coming back soon.

Love

Why do we read poetry? First obvious one: because we enjoy it. The only other reason is for academic purposes, and that's not why this is here.

Many of us read poetry simply because we often feel depressed and hopelessly lost, and in poetry we see how beautiful and strange everything is. So in that way poetry calms our anxiety.

There are many different kinds of poems. They are not all calming. Some poems make me anxious, angry, scared, and sad, which is why I value them. As a reader, I want a full meal, not just dessert. I want the sweet and the bitter. Often, I read poetry when I'm already relaxed. In fact, I read more when I'm not stressed out.

Here are the main reasons I respond to poetry, as far as I can tell. Metrical(格律的) poems are about setting up rules and then bending them. Usually, this is done by setting up a rhythm and then violating it or almost violating it. And then returning to it again. This satisfies my desire for order and also my desire for testing boundaries.

Poetry plays with language and often slams words together in surprising ways, which is thrilling the way food can be when the chef has paired ingredients you never thought would taste good together but somehow do.

Many poems are dense. Words mean two or three things at once and lots of suggestions are packed between the lines. This is intellectually inspiring and it allows me to read the same poem over and over always finding new things in it.

And, of course, there's the subject matter. It interests me just as it would if the same subject was explored in a story or essay. Not all poems interest me in this way, but then not all stories and essays do, either.

In the traffic lights, red means "stop",green means "go",and yellow means "hurry": Why those colors, though? Why not blue, purple, and brown? The following are transponded from others WeChat.

●Red is an inherited symbol from railroads

Red symbolizes danger in many cultures, which makes sense, considering it has the longest wavelength of any color, meaning you can see it from a greater distance than other colors.Red has meant "stop" since long before cars existed, with railway signals use of red dating bake to the days when mechanical arms lifted and lowered to indicate whether the rail ahead was clear. So that one's simple.

●Green meant "caution" at first

Green's role in lights has actually changed dramatically over time. Its wavelength is next to (and shorter than) yellow's,meaning it's still easier to see than any color other than red and yellow.Back in the early days of railway lights, green originally meant "caution",while the "all-clear" light was, well, clear or white.Trains,of,course, take an unlimitedly long time to stop, and legend has it that several disastrous collisions happened after an engineer mistook stars in the night horizon for an all-clear.Thus,green became "go",and for a long time, railways used only green and red to signal trains.

●Yellow means "caution" because it's almost as easy to see as red

From the earliest days of motoring up until the mid-1900s,not all stop signs were red-many were yellow, because at night it was all but impossible to see a red stop sign in a poorly lit area. The yellow stop-sign craze began in Detroit in 1915,a city that five years later installed its first electric traffic signal, which happened to include the very first amber traffic light,at the corner of Michigan and Woodward Aves.

  1. (1) What are the earliest traffic signals designed for from the passage?

    A . Cars. B . Trains. C . Motorcars. D . Not mentioned.
  2. (2) Which statement is true according to the passage?

A . Green means "go" all the time. B . Red is the easiest color to be noticed. C . All yellow things need dealing with carefully. D . All the three colors were once used as "caution".
  3. (3) What's the main idea of the passage?

A . What is your favorite color? B . Why are "Red,Yellow,Green" used as traffic signals? C . How can we figure out the wavelength of colors? D . What color can green, yellow and red make?
  4. (4) Where is the passage from?

    A . A diary. B . A scientific magazine. C . A newspaper. D . The Internet.

Some kinds of mental skills naturally decrease as people get older. Yet research seems to show that some training can improve such skills. A recently published study also appears to attest that the good effects of training can last for many years after that training has ended.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland wanted to learn how long memory and thinking skills would last in older people who were trained to keep them. The people were part of the ten-year research project. They were taught methods meant to improve their memory, thinking and ability to perform everyday tasks.

More than 2,800 volunteered for the study called ACTIVE short for Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly. Most were studied when they were more than 70 years old.

The volunteers took one of several short training classes meant to help them keep their mental abilities. One class trained participants in skills including how to remember word lists. Another group trained in reasoning. A third group received help with speed-of-processing speed of receiving and understanding information. A fourth group the control group did not get any training.

Earlier results had established that the training helped the participants for up to five years. Now, leading study writer George Rebok says, the research showed most of the training remained effective a full ten years later.

Professor Rebok and his team found that the people trained in reasoning and speed-of- processing did better on tests than the control group.

"We are wondering whether those effects which endured over time would still be there ten years following the training, and in fact, that's exactly what we found.

The effect on memory, however, seemed not to last as long. Still, the old people in any of the three classes generally reported less difficulty in performing daily activities than the control group. The total training time for the older people was between 10 and 15 hours.

  1. (1) Which statement is false according to the text?
A . This kind of training can only have effects on people for a few years. B . The people were trained during a period of ten years. C . Most of the people who were studied were more than 70 years old. D . The first group were trained how to remember word lists.
  2. (2) How would the old in the second group perform after receiving the training?
A . Remember more words. B . Understand information more quickly. C . Act as poorly as before. D . Perform daily activities better.
  3. (3) What does the underlined word "attest" in the first paragraph mean7
    A . Affect. B . Deny. C . Prove. D . Improve.
  4. (4) Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A . Some Kinds of Mental Skills Naturally Decrease. B . Mental Training Helped Elderly Stay Sharp for Years. C . Four Groups of Old People Were Trained Mentally. D . A Ten-year Research Affects Elderly.

Humans make mistakes. Even surgeons with years of experience are not infallible. But what if these doctors could pool their knowledge and experience together and create a surgical standard of care, to be carried out by machines?

That's the idea behind surgical robots, which may soon perform most surgeries, from sewing up tiny wounds to performing heart procedures. Many of these operations are, in fact, already completed with the assistance of robots. But a recent test suggests that robots in the operating room may soon go a step further, performing on soft tissue completely on their own, from start to finish.

The Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot(STAR), successfully completed surgeries on pigs. "We're the first group to develop autonomous robotic surgery with soft-tissue surgery, and when compared to standard operation, it's better, "says Peter Kim, professor of surgery. "The idea is not to replace surgeons;it will make the surgeons better and make the procedures safer. "

A recent Mayo Clinic study found that major surgical errors-including operating on the wrong site or side of the body, or even leaving tools or objects inside the patient-occur every one out of 22, 000 procedures. That's rare, but robots like STAR would aim to lower the number even further.

In the da Vinci surgical system, surgeons place their arms inside instruments and use their hands to control the movement of robotic tools on the operating table from afar. The robot's every major move is controlled by surgeons, and thus its results may vary based on the surgeon's training or experience.

STAR, on the other hand, is entirely autonomous. It's not only able to work on its own and perform surgeries with a more flexible "hand", but it's able to react to the unexpected incidents. Cutting into hard tissue like bones is one thing, but operating on moving soft tissue is far more complex. STAR reacts to a changing environment, similar to how self-driving cars are programmed to not only drive on the highway, but also react to another driver making a mistake and getting in your way.

  1. (1) The underlined word "infallible" in Paragraph 1probably means ______ .
    A . quite smart B . really creative C . rather responsible D . always right
  2. (2) We can learn from the passage that STAR ______ .
A . can perform the operation on its own B . has been widely used in the operating room C . can make surgeries much faster D . will take the place of surgeons
  3. (3) In the da Vinci surgical system, ______.
A . robots are trained from afar B . robots always make mistakes C . surgery results depend on surgeons D . surgeons have trouble controlling robots
  4. (4) In the last paragraph, the author mentions self-driving cars in order to show ______.
A . how smart an autonomous robot can be B . how difficult self-driving on the highway is C . how bad getting in another driver's way might be D . how dangerous operating on people is.
