Today show's Kathie Lee Gifford is hoping to bring the story of David to a new generation with her latest musical project, The Little Giant.

The 13-song album tells the story of the shepherd (牧羊人) boy who defeated a giant with five stones and a slingshot and became a king. The idea of the record came after Gifford and her husband Frank went on a life-changing trip to the Holy Land in 2012.

Gifford hoped to shine light on David's story to help a new generation find their own purpose; it's why she decided to compose this album that invites kids to hear the tale of the shepherd in a fun and educational way. Gifford based the record's opening track "What is Your Stone" on bravery and faith. She hopes the songs can help children find confidence in themselves.

Though the album is aimed towards families and children, Gifford found recording the story of David to be an exercise in healing after the death of her beloved husband Frank who passed away two years ago.

"I catch myself saying that I lost him sometimes," Gifford says, "No, he hasn't been gone. The trip took root in my husband's life, because he truly came to understand exactly what David did. "

Gifford says the trip and the teachings stayed with her husband until his death. 66For the next three years, when people came to visit us, they'd always see Frank's trophy (奖杯) room because it's like a museum," Gifford explained. "He would take them over. Instead of all of his trophies, he would point to the stones we brought back from the travelling destination and talk a out them. "

Gifford expects her own journey, her new album and her commitment to bringing a bit of joy to people through her show can help inspire children to discover their own faith and purpose.

  1. (1) What was Gifford's main intention of making the album?
A . To honor the meaningful trip. B . To show her love to her husband. C . To help children find faith and purpose. D . To make children understand David's story.
  2. (2) How did the album benefit Gifford?
A . It made her become a superstar. B . It made her win lots of trophies. C . It helped her plan to have a trip to the Holy Land. D . It helped her recover from the pain of losing Frank.
  3. (3) What does the underlined word "them" in paragraph 6 refer to?
    A . The visitors. B . The stones. C . The trophies. D . The trips.
  4. (4) What do we know from the text?
A . David was the hero of many children. B . Gifford finished recording the album in 2012. C . Frank had won much glory when he was alive. D . The author liked Gifford's songs very much.

Parents everywhere praise their kids. Jenn Berman, author of The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy and Confident Kids, says, "We've gone to the opposite extreme of a few decades ago when parents tended to be more strict." By giving kids a lot of praise, parents think they're building their children's confidence, when, in fact, it may be just the opposite. Too much praise can backfire and, when given in a way that's insincere, make kids afraid to try new things or take a risk for fear of not being able to stay on top where their parents' praise has put them.

Still, don't go too far in the other direction. Not giving enough praise can be just as damaging as giving too much. Kids will feel like they're not good enough or that you don't care and, as a result, may see no point in trying hard for their accomplishments.

So what is the right amount of praise? Experts say that the quality of praise is more important than the quantity. If praise is sincere and focused on the effort not the outcome  you can give it as often as your child does something that deserves a verbal reward. "We should especially recognize our children's efforts to push themselves and work hard to achieve a goal," says Donahue, author of Parenting Without Fear: Letting Go of Worry and Focusing on What Really Matters. "One thing to remember is that it's the process not the end product that matters."

Your son may not be the best basketball player on his team. But if he's out there every day and playing hard, you should praise his effort regardless of whether his team wins or loses. Praising the effort and not the outcome can also mean recognizing your child when she has worked hard to clean the yard, cook dinner, or finish a book report. But whatever it is, praise should be given on a case-by-case basis and be proportionate (相称的) to the amount of effort your child has put into it.

As our Earth’s temperature warms up because of climate change, it is having unexpected effects on our world’s forests. When temperatures rise, trees close their skins to    1    the loss of water, and this, in turn, slows down the    2    of photosynthesis(光合作用). As a result, these trees are shorter and grow slowly, as well as have a    3    death rate.

Climate change also increases the    4    of droughts and wildfires. After wildfires, it takes a while for the forest systems to    5    , and in some cases, the forests are    6    permanently. Trees that are stressed are also    7    to attacks by bacteria(细菌). In tropical forests, vines that use the trees as    8    can often choke the trees and rob them of nutrients. Finally, humans have    9    the forest landscape through logging. When trees are replanted on the soil, they will never grow as large as the    10    trees that were cut down.

As these forests disappear, species that once called them “home” are forced to change,    11    the variety of those systems.    12    , some endangered species are unable to    13    and die. Old-growth forests are disappearing in all regions of our world. When forests die, younger forests that are reestablished in the same area grow back weaker and smaller    14    poor vegetation. With trees dying increasingly and continuously, will future generations    15    out on the wonders of forests?

People should have one meat-free day a week if they want to make a personal and effective sacrifice(牺牲) that would help deal with climate change,” the world’s leading authority on global warming has told The Observer.

Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said that people should then go on to reduce their meat consumption even further.

Pachauri, who was re-elected the panel’s chairman for a second six-year term last week, said diet change was important because of the huge greenhouse gas emissions (排放) and other environmental problems associated with raising cattle and other animals. “It was relatively easy to change eating habits compared to changing means of transport,” he said.

The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation has estimated that meat production accounts for nearly a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions. These are produced during the production. For example, ruminants (反刍动物), particularly cows, give off a gas called methane(甲烷), which is 23 times more effective as a global warming agent than CO2.

Pachauri can expect some opposite responses from the food industry to his advice, though last night he was given unexpected support by Masterchef presenter and restaurateur John Torode. “I have a little bit and enjoy it,” said Torode. “Too much for any person is bad. But there’s a bigger issue here: where the meat comes from. If we all bought British and stopped buying imported food, we’d save a huge amount of carbon emissions.”

Professor Robert Watson, the chief scientific adviser for the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs, said government could help educate people about the benefits of eating less meat, but it should not regulate. “Eating less meat would help, there’s no question about that,” Watson said.

However, Chris Lamb, head of marketing for pig industry group BPEX, said the meat industry had been unfairly targeted and was working hard to find out which activities had the biggest environmental impact and reduce them. “Some ideas were contradictory,” he said. “For example, one solution to emissions from cattle and other animals was to keep them indoors, but this would damage animal welfare. Climate change is a very young science and our view is there are a lot of simple solutions being proposed.”

63. What is directly related to global warming?

A. Consumption of meat.              B. Growth of cattle.

C. Methane from ruminants.               D. Processing of meat.

64. Who holds a view opposite to the others’ in the passage?

   A. Rajendra Pachauri.    B. John Torode.     C. Robert Watson.       D. Chris Lamb.

65. It is implied in the passage that _____.

   A. we should try to keep away from cattle    B. ruminants should not be left outdoors

   C. the meat industry will soon close down   D. we must do our duty to save the earth

66. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

A. Less meat, slower global warming

B. More animals, more greenhouse gas

C. Less imported food, better our environment

D. Greater diet change, smaller climate change

Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States and Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes which will give them a head start in life.   31   So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education.   32    However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap.

Parents can see that their children’s skills differ. Some children are very skilled in some areas while poor in others.   33    The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills that they need to be confident, happy and clever.

Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework. Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in

life.  34   It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully step by step. The result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and lots of self-confidence.

Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to repair them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up.    35    And that is more important.

A. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.

B. The more cost in education, the better the result will be.

C. Cooking requires patience and time.

D. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today's children are badly off for self-respect and self-confidence.

E. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is.

F. These activities are not only teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind.

G. Thus, the more the children use the computer, the better the result will be.

—The government should try to balance economic growth and pollution from industry.

—____. It’s time to do it.

A. All right      B. Exactly         C. Go ahead            D. That’s OK
