Everyone has a phone in their pocket nowadays, but how often do we really use them for their original purpose—to make a call? Telephone culture is disappearing. What brought us to this moment, and what are its effects?

"No one picks up the phone anymore," wrote Alex C. Madrigal on The Atlantic. "The reflex (习惯性动作) of answering—20th-century telephonic culture—is gone."

The shift is of course due in large part to more communication options: Texting with photos, videos, emojis, reaction gifs, links and even voice messages can be a more attractive option.

Texting is light and fun, not nearly as demanding of your attention as a phone call. It can also be done with multiple people at the same time. Social media, email and video calls have also eaten away at traditional phone calls.

In recent years, another reason has caused people to ignore phone calls completely: robocalls. Robocalls are automate (自动化的) messages from organizations verifying (核实) your phone number or telemarketers trying to sell something. Americans received 22.8 billion robocalls halfway through 2020, equaling an annual rate of 45.6 billion, slightly below 2018 numbers, according to YouMail, a robocall protection service and blocking app.

As telephone culture disappears, what is the loss of a singular family phone doing to the family unit? Early landline phones unified family members, whereas mobile phones isolate(隔离) them.

"The shared family phone served as an anchor for home," said Luke Fernandez, a Weber State University computer-science professor and co-author of Bored, Lonely, Angry, Stupid: Feelings About Technology, From the Telegraph to Twitter. "With smart phones, we have gained mobility and privacy. But the value of the home has been diminished, as has its ability to guide and monitor family behavior and perhaps connect families more closely," Fernandez said.

Of course, as technology progresses, lives always change for better or for worse. With the loss of telephone culture, families will need to find other ways to unite.

  1. (1) What has caused the traditional telephone to lose its appeal according to the text?
    A . People's preference for robocalls. B . People's addiction to social media C . People's growing need for privacy D . People's wide range of communication choices
  2. (2) What can we infer from Fernandez's remark?
A . Smart phones make families closer. B . Smart phones help people monitor family behavior. C . The value of home depends on how phones are used. D . The use of mobile phone has affected family bonds.
  3. (3) What does the article mainly talk about?
A . The past and future of telephone B . The development of communication tools. C . The downfall of traditional telephone culture. D . The relation between phone use and family bonds.

My experience of teaching students was a wonderful adventure. I had to deal with various challenges again and again.

The  (great) part of it was the relationship I developed with two students. One of the students was Michael,  I met when I was working for a kindergarten. Before I became a morning bus assistant, I  (hear) that Michael was a student who would always shout, stand up on the bus, make fun  other students, and distract the bus driver. So I decided that each morning,  he got on the bus, I'd have Michael sit beside me. At first he didn't like this idea. But soon he settled down,  (know) he had no choice. I began to talk to him about little things outside of school life, such as his weekend  (activity) and things that he liked to do. I also listened  (close) to him. As I gave Michael the attention that he needed, little by little, he began to behave better and better.

Another student I took a special interest in was a boy  (name) Tony, a third grader. To some degree, Tony seemed to be a slow or passive learner. So I decided to see if I could find a way to encourage Tony  (stay) at the task. Before long, he was paying more attention to his studies and scored high in all tests.

When asked about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, an absolute delight, which seems to get rarer the older we get.

For kids, happiness has a magical quality. Their delight at winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved (毫无掩饰的).

In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes. Suddenly it's conditional on such things as excitement, love and popularity. I can still recall the excitement of being invited to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party.

In adulthood the things that bring deep joy—love, marriage, birth—also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. For adults, happiness is complicated (复杂的).

My definition of happiness is “the capacity for enjoyment”. The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It's easy to overlook the pleasure we get from the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, and even good health.

I experienced my little moments of pleasure yesterday. First I was overjoyed when I shut the last lunch-box and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids and my husband come home, I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.

Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable leisure time and satisfying work. I don't think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this what satisfied her.

We, however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing we've got to have. We're so self-conscious about our “right” to it that it's making us miserable. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things aren't necessarily happier.

Happiness isn't about what happens to—it's about how we see what happens to us. It's the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. It's not wishing for what we don't have , but enjoying what we do possess.

  1. (1) As people grow older, they ____.
A . feel it harder to experience happiness B . associate their happiness less with others C . will take fewer risks in pursuing happiness D . tend to believe responsibility means happiness
  2. (2) What can we learn about the author from Paragraphs 5 and 6?
A . She cares little about her own health. B . She enjoys the freedom of traveling. C . She is easily pleased by things in daily life. D . She prefers getting pleasure from housework.
  3. (3) What can be inferred from Paragraph 7?
A . Psychologists think satisfying work is key to happiness. B . Psychologists' opinion is well proved by Grandma's case. C . Grandma often found time for social gatherings. D . Grandma's happiness came from modest expectations of life.
  4. (4) People who equal happiness with wealth and success ______.
A . consider pressure something blocking their way B . stress their right to happiness too much C . are at a loss to make correct choices D . are more likely to be happy
  5. (5) What can be concluded from the passage?
A . Happiness lies between the positive and the negative B . Each man is the master of his own fate. C . Success leads to happiness. D . Happy is he who is content.

Nearly everyone is shy in some ways. If shyness is making you   21   , it may be time for a few lessons in self-confidence. You can   22    your confidence by following some   23   from doctors and psychologists.

Beware of those who use the truth to cheat. When someone tells you something that is   36    , but leaves out important information that should be     37   , he can create a false impression.

For example, someone might say, “I just    38     a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and     39    it for one hundred dollars!”

This guy’s a winner,    40   ? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought two hundred     41     , and only one was a winner. He’s really a big     42    !

He didn’t say anything that was    43    , but he deliberately left out some important   44   . That’s called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically     45   , but they are just as not   46     .

Untrustworthy candidates in     47     campaigns often use this strategy. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs and    48    three million jobs. Then she    49     another term. One of her opponents runs an advertisement   50   , “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” That’s true.    51    , an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state had a net gain of   52    million jobs.”

Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It’s    53    the law to make false claims so they try to mislead you with the    54    . An advertisement might boast (吹嘘), “Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples.” It     55    to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation.

This kind of cheat happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

We can stay young forever. That is the message Dr. Shen Ziyin wants to give the world.

And the Chinese doctor claims that he has found an answer to the problems of aging. His solution is a herbal medicine to slow the process of aging.

Dr. Shen Ziyin has been trained in Western medicine. At the same time he studied traditional Chinese medicine. And, he has been working for the past forty years to put together the best of both and find a cure for aging. He has taken a hint from the ancient Chinese medicine system called “Shen”.

According to Shen, it is the kidney () that adjusts the functioning of the body as well as its aging process. It is responsible for the level of activity that the human bodies go through. Studies conducted by Dr. Shen show that herbal medicine based on the Shen system slows the aging process.

We notice that when people grow old, they have reduced strength, loss of hair, backache, weakness in general, and wrinkles. This happens because when people grow old, their bodies produce T-cells. These T-cells contain a particular substance called Fas. Fas makes the cells in the body destruct themselves.

So the only way to slow down aging is to slow the production of T-cells in the body. This can happen if people eat low-calorie food. Then the body is not active enough to produce extra T-cells. But, is going hungry all the time a good price to pay for staying young?

This is where Dr. Shen’s herbal medicine comes. But how effective it will be, only time can tell.

28. How did Dr. Shen find the solution to the problem of aging?

A. By studying Western medicine.

B. By learning traditional Chinese medicine.

C. By doing research on both Western and Chinese people.

D. By combining both Western and Chinese medicine.

29.What plays the most important role in keeping people young according to Shen?

A. Medical treatment.         B. People’s good kidney.

C. Level of people’s activity.   D. Positive life attitude.

30. The reason why people become old is that ________.

A. their bodies produce T-cells

B. their bodies are unable to fight diseases

C. they have reduced strength, loss of hair

D. they become weaker and weaker

31.We can probably learn from the passage that ________.

A. producing more low-calorie food allows people to keep young

B. the more Chinese herbal medicine people drink, the better for health

C. people should try to quicken the production of T-cells in the body

D. it remains unknown how effective Dr.Shen’s herbal medicine is

If you want to express something so unbelievable that it must have been a special effect, you have a new word to add to your vocabulary.

It’s “Duang”, an onomatopoetic (拟声词) word which doesn’t relate to any particular Chinese character and refers to a special effect.

A video parody (恶搞) adapted from a shampoo commercial featuring Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan spread quickly online, leading Internet users to invent the new word.

The video begins with Chan flashing his black, smooth hair, which would have been perfect except that it was not his real hair.

Next, a self-satisfied Chan admits, to the repetitive, rhythmical sounds of “Duang”, “I refused to approve of this product when they first came to me because of my thin hair, but the director insisted, saying special effects could be used to make my hair look healthy on the screen. Now you see, it’s all special effects. It’s not real.”

The original advertisement became the target of punishment by the government for over- spreading the effects of the shampoo after it was broadcast in 2004.

“Duang” has now become one of the hottest topics on Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like Chinese social network site among those crazy ones imitating Jackie Chan’s speech in different situations.

The actor’s Weibo account was flooded with comments containing the word in this sweeping online trend.

The video came at a time when the famous movie star has been under public attention after trying to save the ill image of his son, Jaycee Chan, who was released from prison this week.

Data from Baidu, the major Chinese search engine, also proved the phrase’s popularity as it has been searched more than 586,000 times within two days.

The word of geili’s sudden rise in 2010 caught the attention of international media when it made up for the word’s official translationgeilivableto describe something cool or awesome.

It’s not the first time that online word has become a regular vocabulary in China.

25From the passage we know that the word “Duang” was originally made       .

A. by some crazy Internet users

B. to refer to a kind of product

C. by Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan

D. to expresssome special meaning

26From the passage we know that the new word “geili” is       .

A. only popular in China

B. a cool and awesome word

C. used by ordinary people

D. also widely used abroad

27What is the purpose of the author in writing the passage?

A. To tell us online words have enriched Chinese vocabulary.

B. To teach all the Internet users how to invent new words.

C. To explain how Jackie Chan invented the popular word.

D. To urge people to fight against the false advertisements.
