Inserting needles through the skin may sound scary, but acupuncncture and moxa-moxibustion, two key components of (tradition) Chinese medicine (TCM), are said to improve the patient's health and well-being.
(add) to UNESCO's representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010, acupuncture and moxibustion are (wide) practiced in China. Their format and practice have distinctive regional characteristics and they have a precious heritage based Chinese culture and science.
The theory of Chinese medicine believes the human body is a small universe with (it) own circulatory system, in this system, there are acupoints (穴位) connecting the channels. By stimulating these acupoints, the self-regulating functions of the human body can (promote). Acupuncture refers to the practice of inserting needles into the body of a patient at a certain angle and using (technique) such as twisting and lifting the needles to excite acupoints (treat) diseases. Moxa-moxibustion normally refers to placing moxa (艾) directly on acupoints or holding moxa sticks at distance to warm the body.
In 1995, the World Health Organization published can be treated by acupuncture and moxibustion. TCM has become more and more accepted by other countries in the world.
When I decided to leave my home country to get a degree in Canada, I hadn't expected that communication would be an issue. I had thought I could express myself in English easily. I took English lessons in my teens and scored well on English tests.
But soon after my arrival in Canada, I realized how wrong I was. In research discussions, surrounded by native English speakers, I had to be careful about what they said. I needed to consciously follow each conversation and translate it into my native language. Then, I had to reflect carefully on it and think of an answer. Finally, I tried to find the right English words to communicate. Constantly thinking about what I would say next, I had a hard time remaining focused on conversations.
But when I again failed to say exactly what I meant in a meeting a few months later, I came up with a simple idea. Why not take part in the discussion in writing? Communicating with my workmates by e-mail, I had more time to think and comfortably express my thoughts. Over time, this practice helped improve my English significantly.
In addition, I learned to be open with my workmates. I decided to remind them that English is not my first language. I asked them to speak more slowly to help me follow the discussions. It was a little awkward to draw attention to what might be seen as a weakness. And at first, the other members of the research team seemed slightly surprised. But they gradually seemed to become more aware of how they were speaking. And then I felt more comfortable joining in the conversation. With efforts on both sides, we could overcome language problems.

Management Consultant Suzy Welch remembers the moment 14 years ago when her life “imploded(压破).” She was speaking to an auditorium full of insurance executives in Hawaii when she saw the faces of two of her children, then six and five, pressed against the glass door. She had parked them in a dance class, but they’d fled out to find her. She wrapped up her remarks and canceled the Q&A. “I was trying to please everyone but pleasing no-one,” she says, “I had to rethink the way I made my decisions.”
Author of the bestselling Winning (written with husband Jack Welch, former head of GE), Suzy Welch, 49, has a new book, 10-10-10, that details the strategy she created after the tremendous decision-making moment. The mother of four explains: “When faced with a vital decision, ask yourself, how will my choice affect my life ten minutes from now? Ten months from now? Ten years from now?
“Too often we decide something by avoiding the immediate ouch. But by looking at the middle and longer time frames as well as the short-term, we’re accessing our real values. My business trip is an example. Had I applied the strategy to it back then, I would have declined it. I had other work travel coming up. I was needed at home.
“Many people have found ‘10-10-10’ thrilling. An entrepreneur moved forward with a new business plan but without the girlfriend, who didn’t share his goals. A mum of a troubled teen finally got him to a psychologist after putting it off. Often, in our most stressful moments, we make decisions by instinct only. Or we ask a friend for advice. Or we make no decision and suffer for it. We can live much more deliberately by taking control of choices and really understanding them.
“Sure, there’s still room for spontaneity(自发的行为). But when you look at things from three distinct time frames and assess the consequences, never again will you say, ‘I have no idea why I made this decision.’”

What are the biggest problems that society will have to deal with in the new age? There are diseases like AIDS and cancer. There’s climate change, of course. And what about producing enough cheap food and energy for the world’s growing population? Who’s going to solve all these terrible problems? Yes, politicians and world leaders will have a big part to play. Yes, businesses will need to create the economic wealth to pay for some of these things. But who’s going to make a much greater difference to something like AIDS or climate change? It’s going to be a scientist. It is the scientist who can turn some new bit of science into a new technology to solve these problems.
If you like thinking about the world around you, why not become a scientist? It doesn’t mean you have to wear a white coat and plastic glasses and spend all your time in a lab as most people often imagine! Scientists do all kinds of amazing things that are actually interesting!
Military scientists develop not only new weapons but new military technologies that could help make wars out of date. Forensic(法医的) scientists work with the police to find quite small clues to catch criminals. Scientists work in schools and colleges as the teachers and professors who will train tomorrow’s scientists. Don’t think a scientist is far away! Maybe you like cooking? You could be a food technologist helping to keep fruit and vegetables fresher for longer. Perhaps sport is your thing? Do you know that most top athletes work with sports scientists in order to improve their performance? You could even be the science writer who gets to spend the life studying the latest advances and sharing them with the world.
Looking for something to do for the rest of your life? My advice? Take a long and hard look at science. It is interesting and ever.
