高三英语下学期下册试题

In this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet, despite all these, my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition she won last year.

As a writer I know about winning contests, and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher. I also know the pressures of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn’t win the contest again? That’s the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface.

A revelation (启示) came last week when I asked her, “Don’t you want to win again?” “No,” she replied, “I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.”

I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地) told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly “guided” by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.

Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting (借用) my daughter’s experience.

While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough a way to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.

Telephone tips

If the phone rings and someone speaks in English, don’t be afraid to answer it! The fear of talking on the phone in a second language will disappear if you practice often. Here are a few tips for helping you improve your ability to answer a call in English.

61._______________

Listening to someone speaking in a second language over the telephone can be very challenging because you cannot see the person you are trying to hear. However, it may be even more difficult for the person you are talking with to understand you. You may not realize that your pronunciation isn’t clear because your teacher and fellow students know and understand you. Pay special attention to your weak areas of your pronunciation when you are on the phone.

62._______________

Don’t pretend to understand everything you hear over the telephone. Even native speakers ask each other to repeat and confirm information from time to time. This is especially important if you are taking a message for someone else. Learn the appropriate expressions that English speakers use when they don’t hear something properly. Don’t be afraid to remind the person to slow down more than once. Keep your telephone in an area that is away from other noise distractions such as a radio or television.

63._______________.

Ask another student to practice talking on the phone with you. You might choose one night a week and take turns phoning each other at a certain time. Try to talk for at least fifteen minutes. You can talk socially, or role play different scenarios in a business environment. The most important thing about practicing telephone English is that you are not able to see each other’s mouths.

64. _______________.

There are many ways to get free telephone English practice. After business hours, you can call and listen to recorded messages. Write down what you hear the first time, and then call back and check if your notes are accurate. Make sure you have a pen handy so that you can repeat the information and check your comprehension.

65._______________.

The way that you speak to your best friend on the phone is very different from the way you should speak to someone in a business setting. Many speakers make the mistake of being too direct on the telephone. It is possible that the person on the other line will think that you are being rude on purpose if you don’t use formal language in certain situations. Sometimes just one word such as could or may is necessary in order to sound polite. Take the time to learn how to answer the phone and say goodbye in a polite manner, as well as all the various ways one can start and end a conversation casually.

Listening to someone on the telephone is like listening to a taped recording in class. The only difference is that you have to talk back! Follow the tips above and remember that practice makes perfect!

Anne Whitney, a sophomore at Colorado State University, first had a problem taking tests when she began college.” I was always well prepared for my tests. Sometimes I studied for weeks before a test. Yet I would go in to take the test, only to find I could not answer the questions correctly. I would blank out because of nervousness and fear. I couldn't think of the answer. My low grades on the tests did not show what I knew to the teacher." Another student in microbiology had similar experiences. He said, “My first chemistry test was very difficult. Then, on the second test, I sat down to take it, and I was so nervous that I was shaking. My hands were moving up and down so quickly that it was hard to hold my pencil. I knew the material and I knew the answers. Yet I couldn't even write them down!”

These two young students were experiencing something called test anxiety. Because a student worries and is uneasy about a test, his or her mind does not work as well as it usually does. The student can't write or think clearly because of the extreme tension and nervousness. Although poor grades are often a result of poor study habits, sometimes test anxiety causes the low grades. Recently, test anxiety had been recognized as a real problem, not just an excuse or a false explanation of lazy students.

Special university counseling courses try to help students. In these courses, counselors try to help students by teaching them how to manage test anxiety. At some universities, students take tests to measure their anxiety. If the tests show their anxiety is high, the students can take short courses to help them deal with their tension. These courses teach students how to relax their bodies. Students are trained to become calm in very tense situations. By controlling their nervousness, they can let their minds work at ease . Learned information then comes out without difficulty on a test.

An expert at the University of California explains. “With almost all students, relaxation and less stress are felt after taking our program. Most of them experience better control during their tests. Almost all have some improvement. With some, the improvement is very great.”

1According to the writer, poor grades are mainly the result of _________.

  Atest anxiety                                Blaziness

Clack of sleep                          Dinability to form good study habits

2To deal with this problem, students are supposed to _________.

Atake a short course on anxiety

  Bread about anxiety

Cbe able to manage or understand their anxiety

Dtake tests to prove they are not experiencing anxiety

3An expert at the University of California said _________.

Aall students could overcome the anxiety after taking a special test program

Balmost all students felt less stress after taking the counseling course

Cstudents found it difficult to improve even though they had taken a special test

It is well-known that priceless undiscovered treasures and antiques may lie a mere 30 feet below the surface in Rome. Therefore, building an underground subway in the city of Rome is no easy work. The dilemma is how to build one without disturbing any artifact(古器物) that may lie buried and undiscovered below its large roads and streets.

Compared to other European capitals, Rome’s subway is far less developed. For years, Rome’s 2.8 million citizens relied only on two subway lines that fell short of meeting the people’s transportation needs. Being one of the oldest cities in the world, it faces some problems in constructing a new subway line such as the shortage of money, but especially protecting the underground treasures.

During the construction of the first two subway lines in the 1950’s, each excavation exposed archaeological remains and the construction had to be stopped to allow the local archaeologists to check them to see whether the discovery proved valuable to the history of the Romans.

After years of debate, the construction of a third subway line was agreed on. Now that the third subway line is under construction, it has been marked as an "archaeological survey" from the very beginning and great care is being taken. This new line will run through the very heart of the ancient city. It will be 24 kilometers in length and 25 to 30 meters below ground.

Archaeologists are working together with construction workers to excavate beneath Rome’s center. Almost immediately, excavation revealed some great finds. Just below the surface, excavators discovered building remains that were torn down in the late 19th century. They dug one layer deeper, which exposed a 10th century’s road that once crossed the city, and one layer below it, they discovered a sidewalk from the 8th century. Near the ancient Forum, workers discovered a 6th century’s copper factory. The early factory consisted of six small ovens used to work on copper alloys. Small copper masses discovered at the scene were sent for analysis. The workers also found the base of an imperial Rome public building.

There isn’t an inch of Rome that doesn’t have any artifacts below. Like their ancestors, today’s Romans have found a way to protect the old while creating the new.

39. What is the main difficulty Romans face when building a third subway line?

A. How to get the money needed to construct it.

B. How to protect the buried artifacts.

C. How to make it popular with tourists.

D. How to bring in new technology to construct it.

40. Why is a third subway line expected to be built in Rome City according to the passage?

A. Because its present subway lines fail to meet people’s needs for transportation.

B. Because it is the foundation of developing Rome’s economy.

C. Because its officials expect to discover valuable treasures while building it.

D. Because its citizens prefer subway lines to other transportation forms.

41. We can infer from the passage that the building of the third subway line          .

   A. will be impossible because Romans want to protect their artifacts

   B. is not difficult because of the government’s support

   C. was opposed by some people at first

D. was considered an easy thing

42. Which is the best title for this passage?

A. Roman Archaeologists’Research on Artifacts.

B. The Reason Why Romans Want to Build a Third Subway Line.

   C. Large Findings in Rome During the Process of Building Subway.

D. The Protection of the Artifacts in the Construction of a New Subway.

Cursive(手写体)is about to become extinct. Do we raise the red flag? To teach or not to teach cursive is the question that several state education departments are struggling with.

Before you read this write-up, do a simple exercise. Pick a pen and paper and start writing in cursive. Yes, that fancy handwriting that you learned in grade school. You may not have forgotten the good times you had while writing loopy Ps and Gs as well as curly Ms and Ns. However, the chances are you won't be able to write it as excellently as you used to. Some people are good at making the perfect loops and curls, while some are bad. I am still terrible at it.

Cursive is hardly used by kids anymore as even adults don 't write in this style, unless they are using it for their

signature. Learning this handwriting was a usual practice in school for several decades. However, in 2011, the Indiana Department of Education made it optional (可选择的)for schools to teach cursive writing to the students. In fact, there were 46 more states who have done the same.

There are some who believe that it is high time for cursive to retire from school curriculum. After all, if we don ’ t leave the past behind, we cannot make way for new things. If you walk into any classroom, you would find children using keyboards to communicate in written form. On the other hand, fans of this cursive insist on its usefulness. They remind us that if we stop teaching and learning cursive in schools, very soon most of our historical documents will become hard to us.

Where do we stand on this subject Is it the right time to erase an almost forgotten handwriting and live in the keyboarding world? Or can we do both without compromising (妥协)on our school curriculum? Let me know your thoughts on this matter by leaving a comment in the section below.

32.People use cursive when they______________.

A. give their signature    B. are in Indiana

A. prefers to learn cursive

B. is a cursive teacher

C. welcomes people to show their opinions

D. is a very famous expert in education

35. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Is Cursive Writing Necessary

B. Is Keyboarding World Good

C. A Keyboarding World

D. Advantages of Cursive

I was shopping with my wife and we have plenty of things to buy. We drove to the centre of the city but stopped our car in front of a shop. An hour later, we came back to the car. But it was strange that we could open the doors. So we asked the policeman for help. He was glad to help us. a few minutes later, he got the door open. Just then a man came up and shouted angry, “What are you doing with my car?” We were surprising and went to see the number of the car. It was not his. We were very embarrassed on that time. What do you think that we did then? We had to speak sorry to the man.

I’m usually fairly skeptical about any research that concludes t hat people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck by a report which concluded that today’s children are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children ages 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.

Why are America’s kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolation brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other things and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.

Given that we can’t turn the clock back, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation cope.

At the top of the list is nurturing(培育) a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress.

To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.

Limit the amount of virtual(虚拟的) violence your children are exposed to. It’s not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.

Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard or Yale.

Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn’t have to ruin your life.

AIt’s impossible to slow down the pace of change.

BThe social reality children are facing cannot be changed.

CLessons learned from the past should not be forgotten.

DIt’s impossible to forget the past

3According to the analysis, compared with normal children today, children treated as mentally ill 50 years ago_______.

Awere less isolated physically                  Bwere probably less self-centered

Cprobably suffered less from anxiety       Dwere considered less individualistic

4The first and most important thing parents should do to help their children is______.

Ato provide them with a safer environment

I had the meanest mother in the whole world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs or toast. When others had cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids' also. But at least, I wasn't alone in my sufferings. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.

My mother insisted upon knowing where we were at all times. You'd think we were on a chain gang. She had to know who our friends were and where we were going. She insisted if we said we'd be gone an hour, that we be gone one hour or less not one hour and one minute.

We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath everyday. The other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of insults because she made our clothes herself, just to save money.

The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by nine each night and up at eight the next morning. We couldn't sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept --- my mother actually had the nerve to break the Child Labor Law. She made us work. We had to wash dishes, make beds, learn to cook and all sorts of cruel things. I believe she laid awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.

Through the years, things didn't improve a bit. We could not lie in bed, "sick" like our friends did, and miss school. Our marks in school had to be up to par. Our friends' report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, being as different as she was, would settle for nothing less than ugly black marks.

As the years rolled by, first one and then the other of us was put to shame. We were graduated from high school. With our mother behind us, talking, hitting and demanding respect, none of us was allowed the pleasure of being a drop-out.

My mother was a complete failure as a mother. Out of four children, a couple of us attained some higher education. None of us have ever been arrested or divorced. Each of my brothers served his time in the service of this country. She forced us to grow up into God-fearing, educated, honest adults. Using this as a background, I am now trying to raise my three children. I am filled with pride when my children call me mean. Why? Because now I thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the whole world.
