In American history, today’s grandparents used to grow up in a period of angry rebelling against their parents’ authority. As time goes by and they ease into the role of ___51___ family members, they may wonder: What happened to the generation gap? Is it gone or just in the ___52___? Or is it still present but mostly underground?

A generation gap is commonly recognized to refer to differences between generations that cause conflict and ___53___ communication, creating a gap.Sociologist William Safire provides a more positive definition.  Generation gap, according to him, can be a(n) ___54___ lack of communication between young and old, which results in misunderstanding, or, on the good side,  it can be regarded as a useful stretch of time that separates cultures within a society, allowing them to develop their own ___55___. From their position in the family, and with more ___56___ than younger family members, grandparents are more likely to look at the generation gap ___57___, expecting that differences between generations can sometimes do some good to all those concerned.

Although there have always been differences between the generations, the drastic differences that the term implies were not much ___58___ until the twentieth century. Before that time, society was not very ___59___. Young people typically lived near their extended families, prayed in their childhood churches and often worked on the family farm or in a family business. With the appearance of television and movies, young people were exposed to cultural influences ___60___ to their own families and cultures. Performers like Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and James Dean won admiration from the younger generation but were often ___61___ by the older generation. Then, to make the matter worse, came the 1960s, and the Vietnam(越南)War caused a more serious ___62___ between young and old.

Today, although more Americans have admitted the existence of generational differences, most do not see them as too ___63___. That is partly because of the areas of difference. The top areas of disagreement between young and old, according to a research, are use of technology and taste in music rather than ___64___ issues like religious beliefs or political viewpoints.  In fact, most American people today have found ways to, on the one hand, live in harmony with family members and, on the other hand, ___65___ their own tastes and preferences.

"I'm feeling quite well I greet the Chinese people and the people of the world," Zhai said as he climbed out of the craft at around 16:40 Beijing time, a historic achievement telecast live on CCTVTens of millions of Chinese viewers gathered before TV screens to watch the moment

Chinese President Hu Jintao and other top leaders had appeared at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center to watch the live transmission of Zhai's space walk

Zhai, 42, chosen by an expert team for the first "out-of -capsule activity," showed a red national flag, helped by colleague Liu Boming, who also briefly popped his head out of the capsule

The astronauts went abroad on their walk after receiving a clean bill of health from doctors on the ground at mission control in Beijing, Xinhua said

       Last Saturday,

If you haven’t heard or seen anything about Road Rage in the last few months, you’ve probably been avoiding the media. There have been countless stories about this new and scary phenomenon, considered a type of aggressive driving. You have most likely encountered aggressive driving or

Road Rage recently if you drive at all.

While drunk driving remains a critical problem, the facts about aggressive driving are surely as disturbing. For instance, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Association,

41,907 people died on the highway last year. Of those deaths, the agency estimates that

about two-thirds were caused at least in part by aggressive driving behavior.

Why is this phenomenon occurring more than ever now, and why is it something that seemed

almost nonexistent a few short years ago? Experts have several theories, and all are probably

partially correct. One suggestion is sheer overcrowding. In the last decade, the number of cars on theroads has increased by more than 11 percent, and the number of miles driven has increased by 35 percent. However, the number of new road miles has only increased by 1 percent. That means more cars in the same amount of space; and the problem is magnified in urban areas. Also, people have less time and more things to do. With people working and trying to fit extra chores and activities

into the day, stress levels have never been higher. Stress creates anxiety, which leads to short tempers. These factors, when combined in certain situations, can spell Road Rage.

You may think you are the last person who would drive aggressively, but you might be

surprised. For instance, have you ever yelled out loud at a slower driver, sounded the horn long

and hard at another car, or sped up to keep another driver from passing? If you recognize yourself in any of these situations, watch out!

Whether you are getting angry at other drivers, or another driver is visibly upset with you,

there are things you can do to avoid any major conflict. If you are susceptible(easily influenced) to Road Rage, the key is to discharge your emotion in a healthy way. If you are the target of another driver’s rage, do everything possible to get away from the other driver safely, including avoiding eye contact and getting out of their way.

60. The first sentence in Para. 1 implies that ______.
A. one may be angered by media reports and wants to avoid them
B. the media coined the term "Road Rage" only a few months ago C. Road Rage has received much media coverage in the last few months D. people not interested in the media know little about recent happenings

61. The underlined word “spell” in Para. 3 means ________.
   A. relieve             B. cause           C. spread            D. prevent

62. Which of the following characterizes aggressive driving?

   A. Talking while driving.               B. Driving at high speed.

   C. Sounding the horn when passing.      D. Shouting at another driver.
63. The last paragraph is intended to _________.
   A. tell people how to deal with Road Rage
   B. inform people how aggressive drivers could be
   C. show people how to control themselves when angry
   D. warn people against eye contact with another driver

There are many things we need to know that we do not learn at school. For example, if we want to use our money wisely, we need to shop carefully. We need to know how to compare the prices of things in different shops. We need to be able to compare the quality of different brands. We need to know how to make a choice when we shop.

Knowing how to make such choices is a “life skill”, and we need these skills if we are to live useful and happy lives.

Some of these choices are small. For example, will I take an apple for lunch or a pear? Will I go to school by bus or on foot? Will I wear the red T-shirt or the blue one to the movies? Other choices are more important. For example, will I eat healthy food for lunch or will I eat junk food because it is tastier? Will I work hard in all my classes or will I only work hard in the classes I enjoy? We make choices like this every day.

We have to realize that the choices we make can affect the rest of our lives. Just as importantly, our choices can also affect other people. The next time you decide to waste time in class, play a joke on someone or talk loudly at the movies, think about this: Who else does your choice affect?

Evaluating Sources of Health Information

Making good choices about your own health requires reasonable evaluation. A key first step in bettering your evaluation ability is to look carefully at your sources of health information. Reasonable evaluation includes knowing where and how to find relevant information, how to separate fact from opinion, how to recognize poor reasoning, and how to analyze information and the reliability of sources.   36

Go to the original source. Media reports often simplify the results of medical research. Find out for yourself what a study really reported, and determine whether it was based on good science. Think about the type of study.   37

Watch for misleading language. Some studies will find that a behavior “contributes to” or is “associated with” an outcome; this does not mean that a certain course must lead to a certain result.     38   Carefully read or listen to information in order to fully understand it.

Use your common sense. If a report seems too good to be true, probably it is. Be especially careful of information contained in advertisements.   39  Evaluate “scientific” statements carefully, and be aware of quackery(江湖骗术)

___40   Friends and family members can be a great source of ideas and inspiration, but each of us needs to find a healthy lifestyle that works for us.

Developing the ability to evaluate reasonably and independently about health problems will serve you well throughout your life.

AMake choices that are right for you.

BThe goal of an ad is to sell you something.

CBe sure to work through the critical questions.

DAnd examine the findings of the original research.

EDistinguish between research reports and public health advice.

FBe aware that information may also be incorrectly explained by an author's point of view.

GThe following suggestions can help you sort through the health information you receive from common sources.
