Reseachers at the University of Kansas say that people can accurately judge 90 percent of a stranger's personality simply by looking at the person’s shoes“Shoes convey useful information about their wearers’’the authors wrote in the new study published in the Journal of Research in Personality

Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the stylecostcolor and condition of someone’s shoesIn the study63 University of Kansas researchers looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study’s participants.Volunteers in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoesand then filled out a personality questionnaire

Some of the results were expectedPeople with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoesand flashier shoes were typically worn by outgoing peopleHoweversome of the more specific results are strange enoughFor example“practical and functional’’shoes were generally worn by more“pleasant"peoplewhile ankle boots were more linked with ‘‘aggressive’’personalitiesThe strangest of all may be that those who wore‘‘uncomfortable looking” shoes tend to have “calm” personalities. And if you have several pairs of new shoes or take extreme care of themyou may suffer from“attachment anxiety"spending lots of time worrying about what other people think of your appearanceThere was even a political calculation in the mix with more liberal(主张变革的)types wearing“shabbier and less expensive” shoes

The researchers noted that some people will choose shoe styles to mask their actual personalitiesbut researchers noted that volunteers were also likely to be unaware that their footwear choices were showing the deep side of their personalities

Once one of my classmates laughed him, “Why are you so fat?” We all stopped to stare at Mike, wonder how he would answer the question. He just said in the calm voice, “Well, because of my size must be large enough to hold my heart of love.” Hearing his word, we all burst into laughter. Not only does Mike take the joke, but he also managed to cope with the embarrassed situation. What an important part humor plays in ours daily life!

In a few yearsyou might be able to speak ChineseKoreanJapaneseFrenchand English-andall at the same time. This sounds incrediblebut Alex Waibela computer science professor at US's Car-negie Mellon University (CMU) and Germany's University of Karlsruheannounced last week that it may soon be reality. He and his team have invented software and hardware that could make it far easier forpeople who speak different languages to understand each other.

One applicationcalled Lecture Translationcan easily translate a speech from one language into an-other. Current translation technologies typically limit speakers to certain topics or a limited vocabulary. Us-ers also have to be trained how to use the programme.

Another machine can send translations of a speech to different listeners depending on what languagethey speak. “It is like having a simultaneous translator right next to you but without disturbing the person next to you”Waibel said

Prefer to read? So- called Translation Glasses transcribe(转录) the translations on a tiny liquid-crystal display(LCD) screen.

Then there's the Muscle Translator. Electrodes capture the electrical signals from facial muscle movements made naturally when a person is mouthing words. The signals are then translated into speech. The electrodes could be replaced with wireless chips implanted in a person's faceaccording to research-ers.

During a demonstration held last Thursday in CMU's Pittsburgh campusa Chinese student named Sang Jun had 11 tiny electrodes attached to the muscles of his cheeksneck and throat. Then he mouthed-without speaking aloud- a few words in Mandarin(普通话) to the audience. A few seconds laterthe phrase was displayed on a computer screen and spoken out by the computer in English and Spanish: “Let me introduce our new prototype.”

This particular instrumentwhen fully developedmight allow anyone to speak in any number of lan-guages oras Waibel put it“to switch your mouth to a foreign language”. “The idea behind the universi-ty's prototypes is to create'good enough' bridges for cross- cultural exchanges that are becoming more common in the world”Waibel said.

With spontaneous(自发的) translatorsforeign drivers in Germany  could listen to traffic warnings on the radio; tourists in China could read all the signs and talk with local people;leaders of different coun-tries could have secret talks without any interpreters there.

71.What can't be learned from the text?

A.The spontaneous translators will help us a lot.

B. There is no Muscle Translator in the world now.

C. Muscle Translators can translate what you think into speech if you just move your mouth.

72. What does the underlined word mean?

A. happening at the same time.          B. happening by itself.

C. similar in size.                      D. Similar in quality.

73.What's the final destination of inventing the language translators?

A. To make cultural exchanges between different countries easier.

B. To help students learn foreign languages more easily.

C. To make people live in foreign countries more comfortably.

The State of Marriage Today

Is there something seriously wrong with marriage today? During the past 50 years, the rate of divorce in the United States has exploded: almost 50of marriages end in divorce now, and the evidence suggests it is going to get worse, if this trend continues. It will lead to the breakup of the family, according to a spokesperson for the National Family Association. Some futurists predict that in 100 years, the average American will marry at least four times and extramarital affairs(婚外恋) will be even more common than they are now.

But what are the reasons for this, and is the picture really so depressing? The answer to the first question is really quite simple: marriage is no longer the necessity it once was. The practice of marriage has been based for years partly on economic need. Women used to be economically dependent on their husbands as they usually didn’t have jobs outside the home. But with the rising number of women in well-paying jobs, this is no longer the case, so they don’t feel that they need to stay in a failing marriage.

In answer to the second question, the prospects may not be as pessimistic as they seem. While the rate of divorce has risen, the rate of couples marrying has never actually fallen very much, so marriage is still quite popular. In addition to this, many couples now cohabit(同居) and don’t bother to marry. These couples are effectively married, but they do not appear in either the marriage or divorce statistics. In fact, more than 50of first marriages survive. The statistics are unreliable because there is a higher number of divorces in second and third marriages than in first marriages.

So is marriage really an outdated practice? The fact that most people still get married indicates that it isn’t. And it is also true that married couples have a healthier life than single people: they suffer less from stress and its consequences, such as heart problems, and married men generally consider themselves more satisfied than their single counterparts. Perhaps the key is to find out what makes a successful marriage and apply it to all of our relationships!

65. What does “this is no longer the case” in paragraph two mean?

  A. It is not necessary to get married any more.

  B. Women do not need a husband any longer.

  C. Women are not economically dependent any more.

  D. Many wives do well-paying jobs outside home now.

66. Why may the prospects of marriage not be as depressing as it appears?

  C. many couples would rather cohabit than marry

  D. The statistics of divorce is not quite true

Although Wu Huifei was only a concubine (妃子) of Tang Xuanzong (AD 685-762), the sixth emperor of the Tang Dynasty, her influence was far greater than most in her position.

Historians say that the ruler loved her so much that, in AD 724, he banished his wife and made Wu a royal concubine.

"Although she was only a concubine, she was treated as an empress with palace etiquette (礼节)," explained Shi Xiaoqun, director of relics collection for Shaanxi History Museum. "Tang Xuanzong even wanted to make her his empress but was opposed by the ministers."

The emperor had thousands of concubines in his palace in Chang'an (now called Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi province) but, according to Shi, he only loved Wu, the mother of seven of his children.

Wu died in the December of AD 737 at the age of 38 and was buried in Jingling Mausoleum. She was given the title Empress Zhenshun after her death.

"It's rare for a concubine to be given so much posthumous (死后获得的) honor in the history of Chinese feudal (封建) society," said Liu Daiyun, research director at the Shaanxi Archaeological Research Institute.

Her tomb ---53 meters wide by 56 meters long --- is located in the west of Pangliu village, which is part of Xi'an's Chang'an district.

The recovered sarcophagus (石棺) is 4 meters long, 2 meters wide and 2 meters tall and is decorated with flowers and maiden figures, which archaeologists say is a rare cultural relic of high scientific, historical and artistic value. In ancient times, a sarcophagus was used to house wood coffins in order to preserve the body of the noble person.

“I knew it was precious but I didn’t know it was so beautiful,” said Han Qinglong, who headed the team that brought the relic back to China four years after it was stolen and sold abroad by tomb raiders (盗墓者).

You're busy filling out the application form for a position you really need; let's assume you once actually completed a couple of years of college work or even that you completed your degree. Isn't it highly attractive to lie just a little, to claim on the form that your diploma represents a Harvard degree? Or that you finished an extra couple of years back at State University?

More and more people are turning to complete deception like this to land their job or to move ahead in their careers, for personnel officers, like most Americans, value degrees from famous schools. A job applicant may have a good education anyway, but he or she assumes that chances of being hired are better with a diploma from a well-known university. Registrars at most well-known colleges say they deal with deceitful claims like these at the rate of about one per week.

Personnel officers do check up on degrees listed on application forms, then. If it turns out that an applicant lying, most colleges are unwilling to accuse the applicant directly. One Ivy League school calls them impostors(骗子); another refers to them as special cases. One well-known West Coast school, in perhaps the most delicate phrase of all, says that these claims are made by no such people.

To avoid outright(彻底的)lies, some job-seekers claim that they attended or were associated with a college or university. After carefully checking, a personnel officer may discover that attending means being dismissed after one semester. It may be that being associated with a college means that the job-seeker visited his younger brother for a football weekend.

If you don't want to lie or even stretch the truth, there are companies that will sell you a phony(假的)diploma. One company will put your name on a diploma from any number of non-existent colleges. The price begins at twenty dollars for a diploma, which seems rather high for one sheet of paper.

Job seekers’ lying is a social phenomenon, and therefore, the whole society should take its responsibility to deal with the problem.
