The $11 billion self-help industry is built on the idea that you should turn negative thoughts like "I never do anything right" into positive ones like "I can succeed." But was positive thinking advocate(倡导者) Norman Vincent Peale right? Is there power in positive thinking?
Researchers in Canada just published a study in the journal Psychological Science that says trying to get people to think more positively can actually have the opposite effect: it can simply highlight how unhappy they are.
The study's authors, Joanne Wood and John Lee of the University of Waterloo and Elaine Perunovic of the University of New Brunswick, begin by citing older research showing that when people get feedback which they believe is overly positive, they actually feel worse, not better. If you tell your stupid friend that he has the potential of an Einstein, you're just underlining his faults. In one 1990s experiment, a team including psychologist Joel Cooper of Princeton asked participants to write essays opposing funding for the disabled. When the essayists were later praised for their sympathy, they felt even worse about what they had written.
In this experiment, Wood, Lee and Perunovic measured 68 students' self-esteem(self-respect). The participants were then asked to write down their thoughts and feelings for four minutes. Every 15 seconds, one group of students heard a bell. When it rang, they were supposed to tell themselves, "I am lovable."
Those with low self-esteem didn't feel better after the forced self-affirmation. In fact, their moods turned significantly darker than those of members of the control group, who weren't urged to think positive thoughts.
The paper provides support for newer forms of psychotherapy (心理治疗) that urge people to accept their negative thoughts and feelings rather than fight them. In the fighting, we not only often fail but can make things worse. Meditation (静思) techniques, in contrast, can teach people to put their shortcomings into a larger, more realistic perspective (view). Call it the power of negative thinking.
58. What do we learn from the first paragraph about the self-help industry?
A. It was established by Norman Vincent Peale. B. It is based on the concept of positive thinking.
C. It is a highly profitable industry. D. It has led to positive results.
59. What does the author mean by "… you're just underlining his faults" (Line 4, Para. 3)?
A. You are pointing out the errors he has committed.
B. You are not taking his mistakes seriously enough.
C. You are emphasizing the fact that he is not intelligent.
D. You are trying to make him feel better about his faults.
60. What do we learn from the last paragraph?
A. People can avoid making mistakes through meditation.
B. Meditation may prove to be a good form of psychotherapy.
C. The effects of positive thinking vary from person to person.
D. Different people tend to have different ways of thinking.
Doesn’t it sound crazy? Fans are so excited as Justin Bieber is scheduled to perform at a stadium in Dubai, the capital city of UAE on May 4. In less than 36 hours all the tickets available were sold out.
If you have a teenager lying under your roof, it’s likely that she has spent your hardearned cash on some concert tickets. Clare Smart, a researcher on teenage development in Dubai, has some idea about the pop phenomenon. “Justin Bieber is a teenager himself and therefore teenagers feel a connection to him, in the songs that he sings, his hairstyle and how he dresses. He represents what many teenagers would like for themselves, such as the latest clothing trends, exciting travel and high earnings. What’s more, it gives teenagers the feeling of being part of a group and a shared experience with other teenagers who have the same interest in a particular celebrity…”says Smart.
It’s easy to be sheltering as a parent and it’s a good idea to talk to your teenagers about their idols, find out what they like about them and why. “You could accompany your teenagers to a concert or listen along to the latest song in the car with them, ”suggests Smart. “This shows that you are interested in the things they consider to be important.’’
Sometimes, however, a normal level of interest slips into an obsession(痴迷)and then it becomes a cause for concern. It is now considered a personality disorder, which is closely related to higher levels of depression, anxiety and stress. In practice, teenagers who are overly obsessed with stars often have damaged relationships with their parents.
The good news, however, is that there is plenty that parents can do to prevent their teenagers from becoming overly obsessed with those so called celebrities. Let them know what their real life is like behind the story, and they can see these celebrities in a new angle.
35. What does the first paragraph intend to tell the reader?

B. Why teenagers love music concerts.

D. How popular Justin Bieber is.
36. According to Para 2, teenagers can get from worshiping an idol.

The stress of daily life has caused a new phenomenon—sleep texting.People with the rare condition send incoherent (语无论次的) text messages while asleep to their friends and family—completely unaware that they are doing it.
Sleep specialist Dr David Cunnington of Melbourne Sleep Disorder Centre in Australia, said patients had reported incidents of sleep texting—and he has advised people to leave their mobile phones outside the bedroom. He said; "We have had patients who have reported sending text messages to their friends and family while asleep. It is one of those things that happen, but it is very rare, and certainly not a common trend."
Unsurprisingly, there are no studies into sleep fexting—but a similar phenomenon, sleep emailing, was studied in 2008.Researchers at the University of Toledo reported the case of a woman, 44, who would compose emails while sound asleep. She did not remember sending the emails when awake.Dr Cunnington said cases of sleep emailing were more common, and were likely to have a more detrimental effect on the lives of sufferers. He said; "Emails can be sent to work colleagues and have much more serious consequences, while text messages are more likely to be accidentally sent to a friend or family member, so people aren't as likely to complain, of a problem."
Dr Cunnington described sleep texting as the result of people having too much to do during waking life.He explained; "People are doing so much during a normal day that it can mean that they feel like they're "on call'; even at night.Because it's so easy to receive emails constantly, and get notifications (通知) from cellphones, it becomes more difficult for us to separate our waking and sleeping lives." Dr Cunnington said people struggling to get a quality night's sleep should keep their phones out of the bedroom."The key point is that people need to respect their sleep, and make an effort to switch off at night."

You know the saying "You're as young as you feel." Well, there may be some truth t, according to that, according to researchers at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Ellen Langer, a Harvard psychologist who studies how the mind influences the body, and colleagues reviewed the scientific literature for evidence that a person’s perception of their age might influence their health. They published their results in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science.
In one study that Langer led, 47 women had their hair done. The women who thought their new hairdos made them look younger did look younger to objective observers, who were shown before-and-after pictures. The women who thought they looked younger also showed a drop in blood pressure. Another study involving 4,421 men found that thise who became bald(秃顶)at a relatively young age were more likely to get cancer and heart disease than men who did not. Similarly, another study involving 2,017 men found that those who lost their hair early were more likely to develop heart disease. “We believe that the feelings associated with being older than one’s real age account for some of these health outcomes,” the researchers wrote.
The researchers also described studies that found that women who had children later in life were more likely to be healthier and live longer than those who had children early, which they attributed to the fact that these mothers tend to spend more time with younger women. Similarly, people who marry younger partners tend to live longer than those who marry older partners, according to other studies.
Taken together, the research “supports the general mind-body hypothesis(假说)that when a younger mind is prepared, a younger body can accompany it.” While the mechanism remains unclear, the researchers figured that suggestions associated with aging can “make one unconsciously or consciously aware of old age and set in motion a series of physiological processes that can have real effects on short-term and long-term health.”

Many of us feel somehow nervously whenever we are taking an important exam. Nervousness not only does harm to students’ health but disturb their studies. So it’s necessary for our students to learn to relax. I think it’s very important to have a right attitude for exams. Exams are only a means of checking how we have learned. Therefore, there is no need to worry too much the results of the exams. Before an exam, make a scientific study plan and keeping a peaceful mind can helped to reduce the pressure from the exam.
