Like a backward tape, time returns to my mom's teens. She is waiting for admission results from a famous high school. She has studied for the test but with joy, since she feels no suffering in learning.Suddenly I spy her jumping and laughing, waving a paper in her hand while her family stands nearby, more shocked than happy. No one else from their village has ever passed the test.
Later, at her new high school, I proudly watch as she continues to rise to the top. Many of her essays are published in newspapers, and her classmates seek her advice when a test is approaching. She never refuses them, and I feel honored to be related to such an intelligent person.
As I walk with her through her journey, I finally come to the point I have been looking forward to most: her life in America. After passing several tests and finding a kind boss to sponsor her, she becomes a college student at University of California, Los Angeles. At first, I sense her loneliness and panic as she tries to adapt to her new surroundings.Though her English is broken and she knows little about American culture, I can tell she is more than grateful to be here. Here she has access to electricity and running water, and most importantly, better schools. At UCLA, she has so many opportunities to grow and advance in her field.
Her journey to America was for just one reason: education.Though having an education will better her life, I know she doesn't do it for herself. My mom wants her children to have an easier life that will not require hard labor.I see what my mom goes through, and I'm filled with gratitude that she has made the brave choice to move here.

Maurice Mountain is a retired lawyer in Washington, D.C. He developed a prototype(原型机) for a device he calls the Presto Emergency Boat Ladder. His invention is a small folding ladder that attaches to the side of a boat to help people who fall into the water. Mr. Mountain plans to mass-produce his boat ladder.
He created his invention at a workshop called TechShop. Mr. Mountain says, “I think it encourages innovation. I think people who probably have had ideas rolling around in the back of their minds for years but have never had the opportunity to actually put them into production or even experiment with them would find this place wonderful. Members of TechShop use high-tech equipment to develop and produce ideas they have for inventions.” Isabella Musachio manages a TechShop in Arlington, Virginia. She says the shop has many different kinds of equipment.
“TechShop is a do-it-yourself maker space. So when you come in we have all these different areas of the shop, and we have a metal shop, wood shop, lasers, 3D printers, electronics. I mean, we have so many different areas and we have all the equipment that is availahle to anybody above the age of 12.”
Membership costs for TechShop start at just over $ 100 per month. Members are able to use costly machines including 3D modeling tools and laser cutters. Isabella Musachio says TechShop helps its members build their dreams.
“Our motto is ‘build your dreams here’ because you can really come in with just an idea, and then with the help of TechShop make that leap from an idea to building your project o, your prototype or even your business.”
Jim Newton is the founder of TechShop. He first introduced the idea for the technology workshops at an arts and sciences event called Maker Faire in San Mateo, California in 2006. His idea attracted hundreds of members during that event, Now, there are eight TechShop locations in the U. S. In all, there are more than 6,000 members. What makes a house a home?
Not size, of course. I’ve been in some of the grandest houses in America, and it’s apparent no one lives there. Earlier this year, I had dinner in a mud hut in Ethiopia, where we sat on chairs next to the hostess’ bed — a home that had more warmth than any house I’ve been in since.
Now John Edwards is exploring what makes a house a home in his just-released Home: The Blueprints of Our Lives. There Edwards writes, “This isn’t a book about houses; it’s a book about home. About the values they rest on, the dreams they are filled with, and the people they have shaped,” Edwards writes. “The houses and circumstances are different, but much of what you find inside will be familiar.”
Whether you’re sitting in an airport right now, waiting to fly to your childhood home for Thanksgiving, or in your own home waiting for the relatives to arrive, you know what he’s talking about.
We’ve lived in our townhouse for 21 years. It’s home now. The loose windows that rattle in the wind. The fireplace so shallow that it holds only one log. The kitchen window that offers a view of the world passing by. It’s where friends sit on the kitchen counter drinking wine while dinner is being fixed. It will always be my true home. Even the lamp in the west living room window, which I could see far down the road when driving home late at night, still shines.
While all this talk about childhood memories can be warm and comforting, home is whom you’re with, not where you are. As Edwards writes, “Home is family. Home is safety. Home is faith.”
Happy homecoming.

It is a common belief that of all the wonderful gifts that we’ve been given, one of the greatest is freedom. That is why so many of us try to gain freedom at any cost. But are all kinds of freedom worth seeking?
One windy spring day, I observed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites. Multicolored creations of varying shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds moving and dancing. As the strong winds blew against the kites, a string kept them in check.
Instead of blowing away with the wind, they arose against it to achieve great heights. They shook and pulled, but the restraining (约束) string and the tail kept them being pulled along, facing upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled and trembled against the string, they seemed to say, “Let me go! Let me go! I want to be free!” They flew beautifully even as they fought the restriction of the string. Finally, one of the kites succeeded in breaking loose. “Free at last,” it seemed to say. “Free to fly with the wind.”
Yet freedom from restraint, simply put, is at the mercy of an unsympathetic soft wind. It soon fell to the ground and landed in a mass of weeds and string against a dead bush. “Free at last” free to lie powerless in the dirt, to be blown helplessly along the ground, and to get stuck lifeless against the first obstruction (障碍物).
How much like kites we sometimes are. The Heaven gives us misfortunes and restrictions, rules to follow from which we can grow and gain strength. Restraint is a necessary match for the winds of opposition. Some of us fought at the rules so hard that we never fly to reach the heights we might have obtained. We keep part of the rules or laws and never rise high enough to get our tails off the ground.
Let us each rise to the great heights, recognizing that some of the restraints that we may feel annoyed about are actually the steady force that helps us go up and achieve.

A. If we want to fly higher, we should fight hard at rules.
B. People shouldn’t obey rules because it’s hard to follow.
C. Rules are necessary for us to reach a higher level.
D. Some rules are too strict for people to obey.
71. In the author’s opinion, some of the restraints ________.
A. are wonderful gifts given by the God B. should be ended right away
C. are something that we are upset about D. can give us power to fly higher
Trapped on the 37th Floor
Melinda Skaar wasn’t expecting any phone calls. Skaar was working late in her office at the First Internet bank of California. By 10:45 that night she was almost ready to go home when the phone rang.
Picking it up, she heard a guard shouting. There is a fire! Get out of there.

Skaar called out to office mate Stephen Oksas, who also stayed late to work. But when they got out to the hallway, they were met by a cloud of black smoke. Rushing back, Skaar shut the door and filled the space at the bottom of the door with her jacket to keep the smoke out.
Then they called 911. before they could call their families, however, the line went dead. That meant that they were completely cut off from the outside world. All they could do was wait and hope someone would come to rescue them.

Looking around, Skaar noticed a small workroom. It seemed to have cleaner air. So they crowed there. That helped for a while, but in time even the workroom was filled with deadly smoke.

Wen Jiabao arrived in Singapore yesterday for an official visit to the country. It is the first visit by a Chinese premier to Singapore in eight years. In the arrival statement, Wen said he is looking forward to the meeting with Singapore on ways to deepen East Asian cooperation between two nations so as to contribute to the building of a peaceful, harmonious relationship.
Premier Wen Jiabao and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong agreed to jointly develop an environmentally friendly city in northeastern China. The city will be a model for sustainable development, a Singapore government statement said. The “Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city” will be developed by a joint venture (合资) formed by Chinese and Singapore companies. “This eco-city, to be built in Tianjin, will become another highlight in our relations,” Wen said after signing an agreement with Lee, who agreed, “On the Singapore side, on all levels, we’ll give this project our full support.”
The two sides will share expertise (技术) and experience in urban planning, environmental protection, resources conservation, recycling, use of renewable resources and wastewater re-use. China’s economic planning agency issued a set of guidelines earlier this month welcoming foreign investment in environmentally friendly areas such as recycling, “clean” industries and environmental protection.
Bilateral (双边的) relations between China and Singapore have seen big progress even though the two countries established diplomatic ties (外交关系) only 17 years ago, Wen said during his talks with Lee.
China and Singapore have also kept close contact and coordination (协调) on regional issues, he added. Wen said China and Singapore are both important Asian countries that share common interests in many areas.
