高三英语上学期上册试题

No personal success, achievement, or goal, can be realized without self-discipline.  36  It is the ability to control ones impulses, emotions, desires and behavior. To possess it is to be able to make the decisions, take the actions, and carry out your plan regardless of the obstacles, discomfort, or difficulties, that may come your way.

How to develop self-discipline? Well explore it together.

· Start with baby steps. No process takes place overnight.  37   So, begin by making the decision to go forward and learning what it takes to get there.

· Learn what motivates you and what your bad triggers are.   38  Sometimes it is very difficult to fight off urges, so know the areas where your resistance is low and how to avoid those situations. Remove the temptations and surround yourself with encouraging items such as motivating slogans and pictures of what you want to achieve.

· Make certain behaviors a routine. Once you have decided whats important to you and which goals to strive for , establish a daily routine that will help you achieve them.   39   They can put you in a negative frame of mind and hinder(阻碍)your self-discipline. A poor attitude can also be a bad habit.

___40___ Michael Jordan has always maintained that his greatness as a basketball player came as much from his willingness to work hard at his craft, as it did his talent.    In summer, millions of people will head for the beachAnd while the ocean can be a great place to swim and play, it may also be useful in another waySome scientists think that waves could help make electricity
“Have you ever been on a surfboard or boat and felt yourself being lifted up by a wave? Or have you jumped in the water and felt the energy as waves crashed over you?” asked Jamie Taylor of the Wave Energy Group at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland
“There is certainly a lot of energy in waves
Scientists are working on using that energy to make electricity
Most waves are created when winds blow across the ocean“The winds start out by making little ripples (波纹) in the water, but if they keep on blowing , those ripples get bigger and bigger and turn into waves, ”Taylor said“Waves are one of nature’s ways of picking up energy and then sending it off on a journey
When waves come towards the shore, people can set up dams or other barricades to block the water and send it through a large wheel called a turbine (
涡轮) The turbine can then power an electrical generator (发电机)
The United States and a few other countries have started doing research on wave energy , and it is already being used in Scotland

    The resource is huge
We will never run out of wave power, besides, wave energy does not create the same pollution as other energy sources, such as oil and coal
Oceans cover three quarters of the earth’s surface
That would make wave power seem perfect for creating energy around the worldThere are some drawbacks, however
Jamie Taylor said that wave power still cost too much money
He said that its effects on animals in the sea were still unknownPlus, wave power would get in the way of fishing and boat traffic
With more research, however, “many of these problems might be overcome,” Taylor said
“Demand for energy to power our TVs and computers, drive our cars, and heat and cool our homes is growing quickly throughout the worldFinding more energy sources is very important, for traditional sources of energy like oil and gas may run out some day
In the future, when you turn on a light switch, an ocean wave could be providing the electricity!
67
Which of the following is NOT true?
    A
Wave power costs too much money
    B
Wave energy creates the same amount of pollution as other energy sources
    C
Wave power affects fishing and boat traffic
    D
Wave power may affect marine animals
68
We can infer from the passage that ______
    A
finding new energy sources like wave energy is important
    B
wave energy is a resource that will never run out and is used all over the world
    C
wave power is perfect for creating energy around the world
    D
wave power doesn’t create any pollution
69
The underlined word “drawbacks” probably means ______

Aregrets             Badventures     Cdisadvantages     Ddifficulties

70What can be the best title for the passage?

AHow to Get Electricity by Waves

BA Huge Resource of Energy

CCan Waves Make Electricity?

DThe Disadvantages of Wave Energy

I am grateful to my English teacher Susan, at whose help I couldn’t have won the first prize in English Talent Competition for high school student last week.

I used to be poor in speaking English. I was too shy to speak in class. Since she teaches us last term, she has been encouraging him to overcome fear and speak out in class. Thanks to her, I have made great progresses. Besides, I practiced several times in the front of her. It was her advice which made me a better speaker and full of confidence. And I owe my success to her.

Susan set me a good example, I am determined to become an English teacher when I grow up.

After spending a year in Brazil on a student exchange program, her mother recalled(回忆), Marie Colvin returned home to find that her classmates had narrowed down their college choices. “Everyone else was already admitted to college,” her mother, Rosemarie Colvin, said from the family home. “So she took our car and drove up to Yale and said , ‘You have to let me in .’ ”*% ziyuanku.com

“Impressed--she was a National Merit (全国英才) finalist who had picked up Portuguese in Brazil--Yale did, admitting her to the class of 1978, where she started writing for the Yale Daily News and decided to be a journalist,” her mother said.

On Wednesday, Marie Colvin, 56, an experienced journalist for The Sunday Times of London, was killed as Syrian forces shelled(炮击) the city of Homs. She was working in a temporary media center that was destroyed in the attack.

“She was supposed to leave Syria on Wednesday”, Mrs. Colvin said. “Her editor told me he called her yesterday and said it was getting too dangerous and they wanted to take her out. She said she was doing a story and she wanted to finish it.”*% ziyuanku.com

There was no saying ‘Don’t do this.’ This is who she was , absolutely who she was and what she believed in :cover the story, not just have pictures of it, but bring it to life in the deepest way you could.” “So it was not a surprise when she took an interest in journalism,” her mother said.

D. Recalling Her Daughter, a Journalist Killed in Syria.

I stared down at the $14.86 left in my hand after paying the weekly rent for the small house we’d found. We had only a small amount of food in our kitchen. I wondered how I could have gotten my eight-year-old daughter and me to the point where we were so close to homelessness. I made one or two wrong assumptions about being able to find new employment. It seemed that I was on a ladder sliding downward, with no end in sight.

Staying here were single moms trying to escape from bad marriages, alcoholics and people who just seemed to have a hard time fitting in. I fell normal, so what was I doing here? More importantly, was there something these people could teach me about surviving until I could climb out of my difficult situation? I swallowed my pride and began to knock on doors. Whether they were single parents or travelers, I was told how to donate blood to earn a bit of money and how one family worked at a local temp(临时雇员) agency that paid daily. Doing everything they recommended allowed me to keep going.

The whole time I continued to go to interview after interview in search of a regular job. I landed a job as a receptionist. I saw all the business partners as they came and went. Whenever I had an opportunity to make any kind of a positive impression, whether offering to return calls, making reservations, recommending a solution to a caller’s problem or anything else, I did so. The effort paid off. My temp-to-perm job was lengthened for another two-week period. I was moved from the reception desk to the second assistant for one of the partners. This gave me the opportunity to see even more of what went on in the firm. I offered the executive assistant help in completing her work so that we could both go home at a more reasonable time.

Even though I knew it was rare for this firm to move anyone from a temporary position to a permanent one, I decided I’d do my job as if it were already mine. I organized the file. I set up a follow-up calendar(日程表). I made sure whatever was needed for meeting was there beforehand. I figured that if I could keep working there for over four months, I might have a chance.

I had been working there for eight weeks when the executive assistant became ill and was in hospital. Since she was expected back shortly, I offered to step in and do her tasks as well as my own task. Sadly, the executive assistant never did fully recover from her sickness. After working for six of the hardest months of my life, I was permanently offered her position. It provided benefits, stability and eventually the opportunity to move into a better and closer apartment. I worked for that firm for almost five years. I eventually took over the operation of a department and was promoted to the position of manager. Who could have imagined that?

My time as a nearly homeless person had given me new compassion(同情) for people in trouble. Instead of simply evicting(驱逐) everyone who couldn’t pay, my apartment developed an awarding-winning program which allowed them to work off their rents by providing needed services, such as cleaning, gardening or painting, somewhere in our apartment buildings.

I went on to have other corporate jobs, and I now live in my house. Whenever I see a person who needs help today, I wonder what his story is. And I try to offer him at least a warm cup of coffee or something to eat. Who knows, some day it might be me again. I’d like to think that someone would help me if they could.

Oceanography has been defined as "The application of all sciences to the study of the sea".

Before the nineteenth century, scientists with an interest in the sea were few and far between.

Certainly Newton considered some theoretical aspects of it in his writings, but he was unwilling to

go to sea to further his work.

For most people the sea was remote, and with the exception of early intercontinental travelers

or others who earned a living from the sea, there was little reason to ask many questions about it,

let alone to ask what lay beneath the surface. The first time that the question "What is at the bottom of the oceans?" had to be answered with any commercial consequence was when the laying of a telegraph cable(电缆)from Europe to America was proposed. The engineers had to know the depth profile(起伏形状)of the route to estimate the length of cable that had to be made.

It was to Maury of the US Navy that the Atlantic Telegraph Company turned, in 1853, for

information on this matter. In the 1840s, Maury had been responsible for encouraging voyages

during which soundings(测深)were taken to investigate the depths of the North Atlantic and

Pacific Oceans. Later, some of his findings aroused much popular interest in his book ---The

Physical Geography of the Sea.

The cable was laid, but not until 1866 was the connection made permanent and reliable. At the

early attempts, the cable failed and when it was taken out for repairs it was found to be covered in

living growths, a fact which defied contemporary scientific opinion that there was no life in the

deeper parts of the sea.

Within a few years oceanography was under way. In 1872 Thomson led a scientific expedition,

which lasted for four years and brought home thousands of samples from the sea. Their

classification and analysis occupied scientists for years and led to a five-volume report, the last

volume being published in 1895.

32.  The passage implies that the telegraph cable was built mainly________.

    A.  for oceanographic studies   B .for military purposes

C .for business considerations   D.   for investigating the depths of the oceans

33.The aim of voyages Maury encouraged in the 1840s was_________.

    A.  to make some sound experiments in the oceans

B .to collect samples of sea plants and animals

C .to estimate the length of cable that was to be made

D .to measure the depths of the two oceans

34.   The underlined word "defied" in the 4Th paragraph probably means_

    A.  doubted   B .challenged   C .gave proof to   D .agreed to

35 .The theme of this passage is about__

A .the beginnings of oceanography   B.the laying of the first undersea cable

C .the investigation of ocean depths   D .the early intercontinental communications

Why College Is Not Home

The college years are supposed to be a time for important growth in autonomy(自主性)and the development of adult identity. However, now they are becoming an extended period of  adolescenceduring which many of today's students are not shouldered with adult responsibilities.

For previous generations, college was a decisive break from parental controlguidance and support needed to come from people of the same age and from within. In the past two decades, however, continued connection with and dependence on family, thanks to cell phonesemail and social media, have increased significantly. Some parents go so far as to help with coursework. Instead of promoting the idea of college as a passage from the shelter of the family to autonomy and adult responsibility, universities have given in to the idea that they should provide the same environment as that of the home.

To prepare for increased autonomy and responsibility, college needs to be a time of exploration and experimentation. This process involves "trying on" new ways of thinking about oneself both intellectually(在思维方面)and personally. While we should provide "safe spaces" within colleges, we must also make it safe to express opinions and challenge majority views. intellectual growth and flexibility are fostered by strict debate and questioning.

Learning to deal. with the social world is equally important. Because a college community(群体)differs from the family, many students will struggle to find a sense of belonging. If students rely on administers to regulate their social behavior and thinking pattern, they not facing the challenge of finding an identity within a larger and complex community.

Moreover, the tendency for universities to monitor and shape student behavior runs up against another characteristic of young adults: the response to being controlled by their elders.

If acceptable social behavior is too strictly defined(规定)and controlled, the insensitive or aggressive behavior that administrators are seeking to minimize may actually be encouraged.

It is not surprising that young people are likely to burst out, particularly when there are reasons to do so. Our generation once joined hands and stood firm at times of national emergency. What is lacking today is the conflict between adolescents, desire for autonomy and their understanding of an unsafe world. Therefore, there is the desire for their dorms to be replacement homes and not places to experience intellectual growth.

Every college discussion about community values, social climate and behavior should include recognition of the developmental importance of student autonomy and self-regulation, of the necessary tension between safety and self-discovery.

24. What's the author's attitude toward continued parental guidance to college students?

A. Sympathetic    B. Supportive    C. Disapproving    D. Neutral

25. The underlined word "passage" in Paragraph 2 means        .

A. text    B. choice    C. extension    D. change

26. According to the author, what role should college play?

A. To foster students' intellectual and personal development.

B. To define and regulate students' social behavior.

C. To develop a shared identity among students.

D. To provide a safe world without tension for students.

27. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage?

I: introduction  P: point  Sp: sub-point  C: conclusion

Things to Remember When You’re Having a Bad Day

Even the hardest days contain lessons that will help you be a better person. Feeling down? Consider these things to remember when you’re having a bad day.

l          No one promised life would be perfect.

36    Don’t base your happiness on meeting every expectation you set for yourself. It is good to be ambitious, but you’ll never be perfect. If you expect otherwise, your life will be filled with disappointments.

l             37

Trees that are slow to grow bear the best fruit. Don’t kid yourself into thinking success will come quickly. It isn’t easy to be patient, but anything worth doing requires time.    38

l          Without hard times, you wouldn’t appreciate the good ones.

Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to give up, that is strength.    39     . It is hard to find much to smile about when you fail, but how else would you improve yourself? If you look at failures as a part of your growing process, you’ll stay positive and follow your goals for as long as it takes.

l          It’s OK to cry sometimes.

Do not apologize for crying. Without this feeling, we are only robots. Don’t be afraid of crying.    40      Instead, it is an acceptable way to let go of your depressed feelings. If you let those feelings build up without release, you’ll have a much harder time dealing with them later.

A. Don’t get sad if you lose.

B. It isn’t a sign of weakness.

C. Success doesn’t happen overnight.

D. It’s not OK to worry now and then.

E. Don’t compare your life with others’.

F. Remember: Rome was not built in a day.

G. If you look for perfection, you’ll never be content.

More and more pupils are giving teachers presents, but the practice only creates insecurity in parents and staff.

I’ve certainly noticed some pupils being feverishly overgenerous of late. Last year, I received not one bottle of wine but four for helping a disaffected pupil through his GCSEs. By and large, my colleagues report the gifts differing along gender lines. Gentlemen get ties, mugs, booze and, if they’re really lucky, tickets to football matches. The ladies are often presented with flowers, jewels, chocolates and so on.

When my son was at private school, I noticed there was a real competitiveness between the students about giving presents to teachers, with expensive baskets from fancy stores and huge bouquets being handed out on the last days of term. Since my wife and I only let my son give thank-you cards, it was clear we were not “classy”. Now he is at an inner-city primary, we’ve noticed that this kind of nonsense seems to have more or less disappeared. For one thing, there isn’t that kind of money floating around – but there isn’t that kind of competitive culture either.

Personally, I think gifts to teachers should be banned beyond the thank-you card they cause many more problems than they solve, creating insecurity in both parents and staff. Perhaps the recession and the lack of money in people’s pockets might be a good excuse for the government to issue some guidelines to schools that gifts shouldn’t be accepted by teachers.

The gifts that I really value are the cards which say a genuine thank you. I still keep them in a file at home.

21.What can the author most probably be?

A.A teacher.        B.A school nurse.

C.A researcher.     D.A gift shop owner.

22.The underlined word “nonsense” in Paragraph 3 refers to the fact that ________.

A.the son only gives thank-you cards to teachers

B.the author and his wife are not classy

C.the son goes to an inner-city primary

D.the students give gifts to teachers

23.To solve the problem, the author thinks it’s a good way to ________.
