Modern science and technology have a great effect on our daily life. At a dinner party, all the young people are busy play their mobile phones instead of talking with the relative sitting around them.

It is obviously that some young people today are addicted in playing with mobile phones. But they don’t bother to talk with their friends or families face to face. Thus they lack in good communication skills.

It is time to reflect how we were using mobile phones. The mobile phone is designed to help us communicate with others conveniently, not spoil our life. So that we should do is to express concern for the people around us and talk to them as often as possible instead of ignoring them.

Two weeks before Christmas, two little girls were walking down the street  1  they saw old Harry, who was on his knees pulling weeds from around a tree. He wore a pair of worn gloves. His fingers were sticking out   2  the ends, blue from the cold. They stopped to talk to him.

Harry told them he  3 get) the yard in shape as a Christmas gift for his mother, who had died several years before. “My mother was all I had. She loved her yard and trees, so I do this for her every Christmas.”

His words touched the girls and soon they   4  join) him, pulling weeds. When they finished, Harry pressed a coin into each of their hands. “I wish I could pay you more, but that's all I’ve got right now,” he said.

The girls had often passed his house, and they remembered that it had always been  5  poor condition. No decorations to add cheeriness were anywhere in sight.

As they walked on, the coin in one little girl's hand seemed to burn a hole of   6   (guilty). The next day she called her  7  (friend). And all of them agreed to put their coins in a jar marked“Harry's Christmas Gift". Then they began to seek out small jobs to earn more. Every coin they earned went into the jar.

Finally, they had enough  8 buynew gloves. Christmas Eve found them on Harry's doorstep singing carols. They presented him with the gloves. With   9  tremblehandshe held the gloves to his face and wept. No doubt he once again felt  10  love of others as the girls reached out to him.

When I was 16 years old and in foster care (非亲代养)in Tennessee, people told me I was unadoptable. But I desperately wanted a family. I sought the help of a judge, even the commissioner of the Department of Children’s Services, and was adopted just a week before my 18th birthday.
We have a lot to be grateful for and this holiday season let’s not forget about the more than 415,000 youth in foster care especially older youth. These youth are the most likely to get overlooked for adoption, but they shouldn’t be. They need and deserve a family just as much as young children do. Making an older youth a part of your family can bring just as much a joy as adopting a baby or a younger child—without all the diapers and potty training.

My adoption was life changing and probably the best thing that ever happened to me. I still remember the first gift my parents gave to me. It was a Mickey Mouse key chain with a key to their home. They told me that no matter what happened they would always love me and I’d always have a place to come home to. This is our 17th Thanksgiving together...
My first Thanksgiving with my family was a little overwhelming with lots of extended family including grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. However, it’s when I realized that I would never have to spend another holiday alone and that was truly an amazing feeling.
I was always eager to spend time with my little sister, Beth. She was six when I joined the family. My dad always says he knew we were really sisters, and I was no longer a guest in the house when Beth and I had our first fight. Today, she’s one of my best friends, and I’m her biggest cheerleader.
There were also bittersweet Thanksgivings. One we spent in my mom’s hospital room. It was there that she helped me plan my wedding but passed away three weeks before the ceremony. My dad walked me down the aisle, and my sister was my maid of honor. Because of our bond, we were able to support each other through that challenging time and that’s what family is for—the good and bad times.
It’s nice having my dad and sister to share holidays and special occasions. But they’re even more important when it comes to the little things—like having someone to share my bad day with, celebrate my promotion at work, or help me think through a difficult decision. It’s in these moments that I just can’t imagine being alone in the world.
I’m so glad that I didn’t listen to those people who said I was unadoptable, I’d never find a family, and that I was putting myself out there for rejection. It’s a risk for older foster youth to consider adoption. It’s an opportunity to be rejected once again. But it’s a risk they should take because life doesn’t end at 18. It’s really just beginning.
If you know someone who might consider adopting an older teen, please share my story -- and have him or her think of my family. They didn’t get to see my first steps or watch me be a pilgrim in my second grade Thanksgiving play. But they taught me so many things about life, and were there to watch me walk across the stage when I graduated from college and law school and accompanied me to the White House last year as I was honored for my work helping foster youth.
I look forward to many more Thanksgivings with my family, and I’m eternally thankful they chose me to be a part of their family.

Today I visited the zoo with several classmate. Early in the morning, we got together at 7 am outside our school gate. Then we went to the zoo by food. It was half an hour’s walk. When we arrived there, the zoo already crowded with people. There were many animals in the zoo, which were very interesting, and we were especially interested in monkeys. They made all kinds of faces and we also talked with some foreign guests in English. Laughing and chatting, they really had a good time. Besides, some people behaved very bad there. For example, they drop litter everywhere, as well as spit freely in the public. I think it is everyone’s responsibility to behave themselves, since it’s well known what China is an ancient civilized country with a long history. I do hope changes will happen in the future.

Poet William Stafford once said that we are defined more by the detours(绕行路) in life than by the narrow road toward goals. I like this image. But it was quite by accident that I discovered the deep meaning of his words.

For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents' home in Boise in nine hours. We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest, easiest road, especially when I was alone with four noisy, restless kids who hate confinement(限制) and have strong opinions about everything.

Road trips felt riskyso I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick to the freeways and arrive tired.

But then Banner, our lamb was born. He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip to Boise. I had two choices: leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me. My husband made the decision for me.

That is how I found myself on the road with four kids, a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting optimism to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop every hour, let Banner shake out his legs and feed him. The kids chased him and one another. They'd get back in the car breathless and energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.

We explored side roads, catching grasshoppers in waisthigh grass. Even if we simply looked out of the car windows at baby pigs following their mother, or fish leaping out of the water, it was better than the best ride down the freeway. Here was life. And new horizons(见识)

We eventually arrived at my parents' doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories.

I grew brave with the trip back home and creative with my disciplining technique. On an empty section of road, everyone started quarreling. I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told them to meet me up ahead. I parked my car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence.

Some road trips are by necessity fast and straight. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes to a world available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and made me realize that a detour may uncover the best part of journey—and the best part of yourself.

6Why did the author use to take freeways to her parents' home?

  AIt was less tiring.

BIt would be faster and safer.

CHer kids would feel less confined.

DShe felt better with other drivers nearby.

7The author stopped regularly on the country roads to   ________

  Arelax in the fresh air

  Btake a deep breath

  Ctake care of the lamb

Dlet the kids play with Banner

8What does the author discover from the trip according to Paragraph 6?

  AFreeways are where beauty hides.

BGetting close to nature adds to the joy of life.

CEnjoying the beauty of nature benefits one's health.

DOne should follow side roads to watch wild animals.

Every few years comes a fitness trend that has people scratching their heads in amazement. “Crunning” will probably be one of them. The “c” stands for “crawling”(爬行). This new sport needs two-legged humans running on all fours!

The funny idea is the brainchild of Shaun McCarthy. The 34-year-old is convinced that it will revolutionize

fitness as we know it. According to the sports enthusiast, “The only thing that crunning’s changed about fitness is that it’s changed everything about fitness.”

Mccarthy has no scientific evidence to prove that crunning is more efficient than traditional two-legged running. However, he believes it is a more effective way to exercise because it puts an emphasis on the shoulders and arms, providing a complete body workout. Mccarthy also says crunning seems to tire him out more. He therefore concludes that the unconventional exercise is a bigger calorie burner than normal running.

While experts generally agree that crunning may provide a better workout, many are not sure if it is the right exercise for humans. Fitness coach Kevin Dean says we are not built to be on all fours and our wrists are therefore not as strong as our ankles. He believes crunning, which he calls a fad(时尚), could result in bad wrist and shoulder injuries, not to mention broken noses.

But McCarthy is not worried. Since the release of his crunning video a few weeks ago, many Melbourne residents have been seen scampering around on all fours. As it turns out they are not the only ones. In the Chinese city of Zhengzhou, crawling, a much slower version of crunning, has been a favorite activity for many years. According to some enthusiasts, the light exercise that is believed to date back two thousand years to the Han Dynasty, is good for curing back and spine ailments.

Ready to give crunning try? Then Mccarthy recommends investing in some good shoes, hardy gloves and most important of all, a face mask!

28.What can we learn about crawling according to Kevin Dean?

A. Our ankles are stronger than our wrists.

B. Crawling is an efficient way to work out.

C. The city of Zhengzhou is the origin of crawling.

D. Crawling can burn more calories than normal running.

29.What does the author think of crunning?

A. Dangerous.  B. Interesting. C. Beneficial.  D. Unbelievable.

30.Why does McCarthy suggest people wearing a face mask when crunning?

A. To amuse other people.                            B. To avoid being recognized.

C. To protect the nose from being injured.                D. To prevent sweat dropping on the ground.

31.What is the text mainly about?

A. A new way of crawling.     B. A new trend of exercising.

C. A scientific discovery.       D. A traditional way to keep fit.

Music is magic! Music speaks louder than words and it is a “language” that the whole world can understand. A piece of music can produce a response in the heart and mind. Like feeling an electrical current or receiving a personal radio signal, music has a spiritual effect on a person. Different kinds of music influence people in different ways.

I have listened to music all my life. When I was twelve years old, the Beatles came to America and my whole world opened up. Maybe young people today cannot understand the influence of the Beatles when they exploded across America. Their influence changed the way we dressed, looked, acted and spoke... even our culture. The Beatles arrived in America from the UK just three months after the assassination(暗杀) of President John Kennedy, which had put America into a great depression. And the freshness and lively spirit of the Beatles was exactly what the country needed to refresh itself.

Music links the heart of the hearer with that of the composer. This means that it mixes the spirit of the composer with your spirit when you listen to it. And the music can take your spirit out of your body and transport you into another world. Music has a great way of touching people. Music can make you laugh, cry or shout. It's also a great source of inspiration.

Try this one day and notice what happens: make yourself a cup of tea, sit on your sofa and play one of your favorite songs. Close your eyes, and soon you'll find yourself creating vivid mental images-matching the music that you are listening to.

28. Music has magical power because it ________.

   A. is a kind of language

   B. can be played much louder than words

   C. receives a personal radio signal

   D. can influence a person's spirit

29. What can we learn about the Beatles from the passage?

   A. They were the biggest band in American history.

   B. They are not accepted by modern American people.

   C. They appeared at a special time in American politics.

   D. They represented the roots of American culture.

30. Music influences people in the following ways except ___________.

   A. connecting the listener and the composer mentally

B. transporting people from one place to another

   C. allowing people to express their emotions

D. touching and inspiring people

31. What does the writer suggest people do in the last paragraph?

   A. Relax and listen to their favorite music.

   B. Enjoy drinking in spare time.

C. Create vivid pictures.

D. Notice everything happening around.

Topics for conversation should be ______ to the experience and interests of the students.

   A. relevant           B. remarkable         C. reminded            D. replaced

It is reported that more than half of ________ surveyed on the website say they are content with their current life.

A. whom                     B. them                 C. ones                        D. those

In 1988, a company in Ohio invented an alcohol-based hand cleaner, which was meant to be used by health-care worker; when soap and water were unavailable. Joe Kanfer, the company's C. E. O., told me recently, “there were a couple of other alcohol products out there, but they were really ugly. Either they were greasy (油腻的) or they burned your hands white.” Kanfer took a year and a half to develop this product which is visually appealing and does almost no harm to one's skin. Still. Kanfer lost money on it for more than a decade because people couldn't get what it was for.

The product was called Purell. Today, you see it everywhere. My doctor uses it several times during every office visit. You can hear it in almost every office in the U. S. and school picnics would be impossible without it. The former president Grorge W.Bush was called a racist for using hand cleaner after first shaking hands with Barack Obama, but Bush also gave some of it to Obama and recommended it as a cold preventative (预防药). What was once barely even a product is now a growing product category, worth hundreds of millions per year.

The rise of Purell makes some health professionals uneasy. Some claimed that promoting hand cleaner may worsen “our culture's irrational (非理性的) fear about bacteria.” Still, the clear agreement among experts is that unclean hands pose a serious health risk, and are one of the main reasons in the spread of infections in hospitals. A 2007 study estimated that, in America in 2002, such infections resulted in more than a million and a half patient illnesses and caused or contributed to nearly a hundred thousand patient deaths - about double the number of U. S.deaths currently caused each year by AIDS and guns combined.

However, I asked a food microbiologist whether clean hands might have a medical drawback. He said, “We might have a much healthier population if we adopted the kinds of condition that we see in many Third World countries, with poor-quality food and poor-quality water and lots of bacteria. If we did that, we would have adults who were very healthy and have very strong immune systems. Unfortunately, the price that we would pay would be extremely high child death rate. ”

28. Why did Joe Kanfer lose money on his product according to Paragraph 1?

    A. Because people didn't think it useful.

    B. Because people thought it was ugly.

    C. Because it was harmful to the skin.

    D. Because it burned the hands white.

29. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

    A. Purell brings in lots of money for Kanfer.

    B. Purell has been widely used in the US.

    C. Purell is a cold preventative.

    D. Purell meets different needs.

30. What mainly caused patient deaths according to the figures in Paragraph 3?

    A. People's fear about bacteria.   B. Hand cleaner.

    C. Bacteria on the dirty hands.    D. AIDS and guns.

31. What can we learn about the people in Third World countries?

    A. They adopt healthy living habits.

    B. They have poor immune systems.

    C. They eat food with fewer bacteria.

    D. Their child death rate remains high.

My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldnt fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didnt get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.

Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电)noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉)shaking my set.

When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.

1. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set?

3. How did the author finally get his TV set working again?

A. By shaking and hitting it.

B. By turning it on and off.

C. By switching channels.

D. By having it repaired.

4. How does the author sound when telling the story?

A. Curious.             B. Anxious.

C. Cautious.            D. Humorous.

A great many parents send their children to pre-school---educational programs for children under the age of five. It has been said that his is the time period when the brain does over fifty percent of its growing. This could mean that the learning process should be introduced during these years.

However, the views that different societies hold regarding the purpose of early childhood education are not same. Whereas Chinese parents tend to see preschools primarily as a way of giving children a good start academically, parents in the United States regard the primary purpose of preschools as making children more independent and self-reliant.

Preschools can operate under a guiding philosophy of play-based or academic learning. Play-based programs are guided by the central belief that children learn best through play. Play is thought to build children’s interest and love of learning. Academic programs emphasize reading, math and science, and use structured, teacher-directed activities to promote foundational skills in these areas. In the United States, the best-known program designed to promote future academic success is Head Start. The program, which stresses parental involvement, was designed to serve the “whole child”, including children’s physical health, self-confidence, social responsibility, and social and emotional development.

A recent evaluation suggests that preschoolers who participate in Head Start are less likely to repeat grades, and more likely to complete school in future. Furthermore, graduates of Head Start programs show higher academic performance at the end of high school, although the gains are modest. In addition, results from other types of preschool readiness programs indicate that for every dollar spent on the program, taxpayers saved seven dollars by the time the graduates reached the age of 27.

Not everyone agrees that programs that seek to enhance academic skills during the preschool years are a good thing. In fact, according to developmental psychologist David Elkind, United States society tends to push children so rapidly that they begin to feel stress and pressure at a young age. Elkind argues that academic success is largely dependent upon factors such as inherited abilities and a child’s rate of maturation, which parents can do nothing about. Consequently, children of a particular age cannot be expected to master educational material without taking into account their current level of cognitive(认知的) development. In short, children require development appropriate educational practice, which is education that is based on both typical development and the unique characteristics of a given child.

Everybody loves self-improvement. Thats why were such enthusiastic consumers of top 10 lists of things to do to be a more productive, promotable, mindful you name itleader. But these lists seldom work. What if we didnt think of self-improvement as work? What if we thought of it as playspecifically, as playing with our sense of self?

Traditionally, people work on themselves, committed to doing everything in their power to change their leadership style. You set your goals and objectives, you are mindful of your time, and seek efficient solutions. Youre not going to deviate(偏离) from the straight and narrow. You focus on what you should do, especially as others see it, as opposed to what you want to do. Its all very serious and not whole of fun. There is one right answer. Success or failure is the outcome. We judge ourselves.

In contrast, no matter what youre up to, when youre in play mode, your primary drivers are enjoyment and discovery instead of goals and objectives. Youre curious. You lose track of time. Like in all forms if play, the journey becomes more important than a pre-set destination.

Much research shows how play develops creativity and innovation. Play with your own idea of yourself is similar to playing with future possibilities. So, we stop evaluating todays self against unachievable ideal of leadership that doesnt really exist. We also stop trying to will ourselves to commit to becoming something we are not even sure we want to bewhat we call the feared self, which is composed of images negative role models. And, we shift direction from submitting to what other people want us to be to becoming more self-authoring. As a result, when you play, youre more creative and more open to what you might learn about yourself.

Unfortunately, we dont often get or give ourselvespermission to play with our sense of self. In life, we equate playfulness with the person who dips into a great variety of possibilities, never committing to any. We find inconsistency distasteful, so we exclude options that seem too far off from todays authentic self, without ever giving them a try. This kills the discontinuous growth that only comes when we surprise ourselves.

Psychoanalyst Adam Phillips once said, people tend to play only with serious thingsmadness, disaster, other people. Playing with your self is a serious effort because who we might become is not knowable or predictable at the start. Thats why its as dangerous as it is necessary for growth.
