My hometown is a small village surrounding with hills. Small as it is, but it’s very beautiful.

I can still remember the days when I spent with my fellow boys there on my childhood. In spring, we often fly kites made by ourselves on the top of the hills. The kites went very high. In summer, the trees were green and the flower were bright on the hills. Besides, the wild apples tasted nicely. In autumn, corns at foot of the hills were ripe. In winter, when it snowed, something was covered with snow.

Today, in my hometown, there are still blue sky, fresh air, sweet water and kind people. I love my hometown.

Alibaba started taking the lead in China by connecting big Chinese manufacturers with big buyers across the world. Its business-to-business site, Alibaba.com allowed business to buy almost everything. Alibaba’s advantage wasn’t hard to judge: size. Alibaba is just big, even by Chinese standards. Its market attracts 231 million active buyers, 8 million sellers, 11.3 billion orders a year — and Alibaba is just the middleman. It encourages people to use its markets — not charging small sellers a percentage of the sale.

If you want a quick look into the influence of Alibaba on daily Chinese life, take my experience. I moved to Beijing a year ago and quickly got tired of visiting small stores across the crowded, polluted city of 20 million people in search of new electronics, bathroom furnishings, and anything else my wife wanted. “You’re looking for what exactly? Why not try it? ” my Chinese teacher asked me one day. With that, my wonderful new relationship with Alibaba began.

Alibaba’s original business-to-business model now is second to consumer buying. Chinese retail(零售) buying makes up 80% of Alibaba’s profit, and leading that group is Taobao, with 800 million items for sale and the most unbelievable selection of things you’ll ever find. TMall.com is Alibaba’s other big site, where you can find brand name goods from Nike and Unilever near the lowest prices.

What I have a hard time explaining to friends and family back in the U.S. is how China has gone beyond traditional shopping — big-box retailers especially —in favor of online purchases on Taobao and a few other sites. In smaller towns than Beijing, where big retailers have not yet traveled, shopping online is shopping, and shopping is Taobao.

I have a list of some of my recent purchases on Taobao for a sense of how wide the marketplace is. Almost everything arrived a day or two after ordering with free shipping. I’m not even a big buyer, because I need friends to help me search the Chinese-language site. When I was searching my purchase history on my Chinese teacher’s iPad, which helps me buy goods, I looked through with great difficulty about 10 of her purchases for every one of mine.

28. Alibaba’s advantage mainly lies in          .

A. its low price                         B. its big size

C. its not charging small sellers            D. its business-to-business service

29. We know from the passage that Alibaba          .

A. will continue to develop.

B. charges all the sellers on its site a percentage of the sale.

C. acts as a bridge between the buyers and sellers

D. is of middle size among all the online sites.

30. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Alibaba’s business-to-business service earns more money than retail.

B. TMall.com provides more profit than Taobao.

C. Taobao has no obvious advantage over other similar online sites.

D. The author’s Chinese teacher is also an online purchase lover.

31. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Shopping online in China is TaoBao.

B. How the author purchases online in China.

C. Shopping online goes beyond traditional shopping.

D. Alibaba influences people’s daily purchase in China.

Too high house prices can be brought under control, ________ the authorities introduce a series of regulatory policies.

  A. even if             B. as if               C. so that          D. provided that

F. Believe someone else has the answers for you.

FIVE WAYS TO KILL YOUR DREAMS

I dedicated the past two years to understanding how people achieve their dreams. When we think about the dreams we have, and the footprint we want to leave in the universe, it is striking to see how big of an overlap there is between the dreams that we have and projects that never happen. So I'm here to talk to you today about five ways how not to follow your dreams.

61. ______

You know the story, right? The tech guy built a mobile app and sold it very fast for a lot of money. You know, the story may seem real, but I bet it's incomplete. If you go investigate further, the guy has done 30 apps before and he has done a master's on the topic, a Ph.D. He has been working on the topic for 20 years. This is really interesting. I myself have a story in Brazil that people think is an overnight success. I come from a humble family, and two weeks before the deadline to apply to MIT, I started the application process. And, voila! I got in. People may think it's an overnight success, but that only worked because for the 17 years prior to that, I took life and education seriously. Your overnight success story is always a result of everything you've done in your life through that moment.

62. ______

Constantly, people want to help out, right? All sorts of people: your family, your friends, your business partners, they all have opinions on which path you should take: "And let me tell you, go through this pipe." But whenever you go inside, there are other ways you have to pick as well. And you need to make those decisions yourself. No one else has the perfect answers for your life. And you need to keep picking those decisions, right? The pipes are infinite and you're going to bump your head, and it's a part of the process.

63. ______

So when your life is going great, you have put together a great team, and you have growing revenue, and everything is set — time to settle. When I launched my first book, I worked really, really hard to distribute it everywhere in Brazil. With that, over three million people downloaded it, over 50,000 people bought physical copies. When I wrote a sequel, some impact was guaranteed. Even if I did little, sales would be okay. But okay is never okay. When you're growing towards a peak, you need to work harder than ever and find yourself another peak. Maybe if I did little, a couple hundred thousand people would read it, and that's great already. But if I work harder than ever, I can bring this number up to millions. That's why I decided, with my new book, to go to every single state of Brazil. And I can already see a higher peak. There's no time to settle down.

64. ______

I constantly see people saying, "Yes, I had this great idea, but no investor had the vision to invest." "Oh, I created this great product, but the market is so bad, the sales didn't go well." Or, "I can't find good talent; my team is so below expectations." If you have dreams, it's your responsibility to make them happen. Yes, it may be hard to find talent. Yes, the market may be bad. But if no one invested in your idea, if no one bought your product, for sure, there is something there that is your fault. Definitely. You need to get your dreams and make them happen. And no one achieved their goals alone. But if you didn't make them happen, it's your fault and no one else's. Be responsible for your dreams.

65. ______

Once I saw an ad, and it was a lot of friends, they were going up a mountain, it was a very high mountain, and it was a lot of work. You could see that they were sweating and this was tough. And they were going up, and they finally made it to the peak. Of course, they decided to celebrate, right? I'm going to celebrate, so, "Yes! We made it, we're at the top!" Two seconds later, one looks at the other and says, "Okay, let's go down." Life is never about the goals themselves. Life is about the journey. Yes, you should enjoy the goals themselves, but people think that you have dreams, and whenever you get to reaching one of those dreams, it's a magical place where happiness will be all around. But achieving a dream is a momentary sensation, and your life is not. The only way to really achieve all of your dreams is to fully enjoy every step of your journey. That's the best way.

Schools are never perfect and not all teachers are perfect, either. If you meet a difficult teacher, or if you can't get along with a teacher for some reasons, what will you do? 36

   1. Show respect for your teachers.

You may not always feel like sitting down and paying attention in class 37 But you do need to show them respect and study hard.

   2. Learn to listen in class.

38 If you don't listen, you will miss valuable information. And it is also a sign of respect for your teacher in class.

   3. Ask proper questions when necessary.

You will not always understand everything you see and hear in class 39 If the teacher is too busy, ask to arrange a proper time for further explanation.

   4. 40

Talking about someone behind his/her back means spreading gossip. They are all hurtful. If you hear a story about a teacher, do not pass it on.

Getting along with your teachers is vital for you in many ways, especially when you are in your last year of high school. Wish you good luck in your school days and have a good time with your teachers!

A couple of weeks ago, a few friends and I had an opportunity to attend a dear friend’s wedding in New York. After the wedding and reception, rather accidentally four of us gathered in a hotel room and began to explore the deeper meaning of life and death. What does it mean to live truly? If we are all getting closer to death, is all the material accumulation worth it? It is not exactly the type of conversations one has at a wedding.

While the answers varied from person to person, I was left with more questions than answers and a feeling of gratefulness to be surrounded by friends who were asking the “right” questions. As the clock kept ticking past 3 a.m., one of the roommates suggested we watch a short film titled “Last Days of Zach Sobiech”. The film is about a teenager’s journey through the last days of his incurable illness. The film brought up a lot of mixed emotions but one quote that stood out for me was Zach’s simple explanation of happiness, “ What makes one happy is seeing someone else smile because you put it there.” By 4 a.m. , there was this energy in the room that had to be shared! With a few packages of post-it notes, we hit the halls of the hotel. We decided to leave short inspirational words on guests’ doors, so when they opened their doors few hours later a smile would turn up.

We ended up sticking post-it notes on all the doors until we ran out of them. The note on the door of the newly-weds properly said, “Where there is love, there is life.”

21. About “explore the deeper meaning of life and death” at a wedding,  the author thinks______.

  A. it is rather meaningful.    B. it is interesting.            C. it is natural.       D. it is not proper.

22.  After watching the film, what impressed the author most?

  A. Zach’s mixed emotions                          B. Zach’s poor fate

  C. Zach’s simple explanation of happiness           D. Zach’s struggle with illness

23. What did the author and his friends do after they saw the film?

  A. They knocked door to door to offer help in the hotel.

  B. They shared happiness with the workers of the hotel.

  C. They stuck notes with encouraging words on guests’ doors.

  D. They thanked the wedding couple gratefully for invitation.

24. What can we learn from the author and his friends’ action?

  A. One who brings happiness to others is also happy oneself.

  B. Helping others in trouble is good to oneself.

  C. Friends are your valuable treasure.

  D. Good is rewarded with good.

When a patient calls for help at Seton Medical Center, “Hi, Mr. Rogers, can I help you?” says a nurse; it’s never a problem finding the nurse. It’s because they all wear locator tags that are part of a wireless system that tracks their movements on the floor. “You can even tell when they are walking down the hallway.” says James Hattori.

This system made by Hill-Rom uses infrared(红外线的)signals to detect when nurses enter a room to answer a call. The Hill-Rom devices look like a mini computer mouse. Some hospitals are putting them in nurses’ kitchens. Staff can talk and listen through a wall unit to nurses or even to patients in other rooms. “We can put the time we were spending hunting staff down, trying to find and locate them to much better use,” says a staff member from Seton. Hill-Rom says it has systems installed in more than 850 U.S. hospitals.

Some nurses worry that the devices will be used to listen in on conversations and scrutinize their movements. “I’m not wearing mine. I will still meet my patient’s needs but I will not wear this badge.” Annette Bearden is among dozens of nurses at Eden Medical Center who staged an active protest two months ago and hid their badges though they were later recovered. “You know it makes me not feel like a professional. It makes me feel like that someone has to watch me to make sure I am doing my job.”

“The biggest reason we installed this technology is because our old call system is about 25 years old,” says a hospital manager. For hospitals this is a case of technology allowing, perhaps forcing people to better make use of their time. Officials at Eden don’t deny they monitor how long it takes nurses to respond to calls but say their main concern is patient care. “I think it is one tool that we can use in measuring overall performance but by itself it is not a valid disciplinary tool,” says an Eden spokesperson.

Eden is expanding its system with hopes the nurse will eventually accept the new technology, but back at Seton where it’s been in place for about two years, there is no uneasiness. “Once the staff actually find out how advantageous it can be for them and the patients, well, actually it became very popular.”

In Castro Valley, California, the Eden Medical Center spent almost three hundred thousand dollars to install the Hill-Rom systems on two floors. Eden hopes to get more of the systems for other floors.

73. Why is it easy to find a nurse at Seton Medical Center?

A. The nurses are on television.

B. The nurses wear locator badges.

C. Every patient has his/her own nurse.

D. Each room has a telephone.

74. How can the staff talk to their patients when they are not in the same room?

A. With hand signals.                         B. Through microphones in the pocket.

  C. Through a wall unit.                D. With infrared signals on the doors.

75. According to the passage, the underlined word “scrutinize” (paragraph 3) probably means _______.

A. watch closely                                B. see inside

C. scan word by word                       D. make right

76. How did the nurses at Eden Medical Center react to the badges?

A. The nurses really liked the badges.

B. They threw the locator badges away.

C. They refused to work.

D. They protested and concealed the badges.

77. According to the administrators of the hospital, Eden Medical Center, the application of the Hill-Rom devices mainly aims at _______.

A. introducing modern technology

B. adding a tool for discipline

C. replacing the old call system

D. improving the service for patients

The number of people hiding their identity while surfing the web has risen in the past year.

Research shows that the level of “encrypted” internet activity has risen dramatically across the world, suggesting that millions of people have begun to use software that hides who they are while accessing the web.

According to Sandvine, the technology networking company, hidden internet traffic in peak hours in Europe has been up to 6.1 per cent of all web activities compared with about 1.5 per cent a year earlier. In North America encrypted traffic went up to 3.8 per cent from 2.3 per cent a year earlier, while in Latin America it jumped to almost 10.4 per cent from 1.8 per cent.

Experts said that the changes in online behavior were the result of exposure(曝光) about widespread internet spying by intelligence agencies, such as that exposed by Edward Snowden, the US National Security Agency whistleblower.

“It will be interesting to see how these trends develop,” said Ernesto Van der Sar, the pen-name used by the editor-in-chief of Torrentfreak.com, the website that first reported the figures. “In any case, it’s clear that internet services and their users are becoming more aware of their privacy online, which is generally a good development.”

Last week Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the British inventor of the web, defended the right of agencies to spy on the internet for law enforcement (强制实施) . He said, “We have to figure out how to balance that against rights.”

28. The word “encrypted” in Paragraph Two has the closest meaning with ______.

A. false              B. hidden         C. cheating          D. changed

29. Which area has seen the largest rise in “encrypted” internet activity?

A. Europe.            B. North America.  C. Latin America.    D. Eastern Asia.

30. Why do more people hide their identity while surfing the web?

A. To cheat others.                       B. To have more fun.

C. To follow the fashion.              D. To prevent their privacy being spied on.

31. What’s Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s opinion on some agencies’ spying on the internet?

A. It’s illegal.                            B. It’s totally right.

C. It’s against human rights.                D. It’s acceptable to some degree.

No one knows what would happen in the future for sure.61.we often think of the future and wonder what the world would be like 62.a hundred years' time.

Think of space. Perhaps 63.permanent station on the moon will have been set up. Perhaps people will be able to visit the moon as a64.(tour). Cheap rockets for space travel will have been developed, permitting long journeys throughout the solar system. 65.that time comes, people will be taking holidays in space66.visiting other planets, such as the Mars Colony and the Venus Exploration Outpost.

Scientists of the future will almost certainly find other ways to make life last67.(long). 68.probably will find cures for most diseases. If a hospital 69.(have) a "body bank", it will give you almost any new part you need to keep on 70.(live). People of the future may live to be a lot older than 100 years.

Why does most of the world travel on the right side to day? Theories differ, but there's no doubt Napoleon was a major influence. The French have used the right since at least the late 18th century. Some say that before the French Revolution, noblemen drove their carriages on the left, forcing the peasants to the right. Regardless of the origin, Napoleon brought right-hand traffic to the nations he conquered, including Russia, Switzerland and Germany. Hitler, in turn, ordered right-hand traffic in Czechoslovakia and Austria in the 1930s. Nations that escaped right-hand control, like Great Britain, followed their left-hand tradition.

The U.S. has not always been a nation of right-hand drivers; earlier in its history, carriage and horse traffic travelled on the left, as it did in England. But by the late 1700s, people driving large wagons pulled by several pairs of horses began promoting a shift (改变) to the right. A driver would sit on the rear (后面的) left horse in order to wave his whip (鞭子) with his right hand; to see opposite traffic clearly, they travelled on the right.

One of the final moves to firmly standardize traffic directions in the U.S. occurred in the 20th century, when Henry Ford decided to mass-produce his cars with controls on the left (the reason was stated in a 1908 catalog: the convenience for passengers exiting directly onto the edge, especially if there is a lady to be considered). Once these rules were set, many countries eventually adjusted to the right-hand standard, including Canada in the 1920s, Sweden in 1967 and Burma in 1970. The U.K. and former colonies such as Australia and India are among the Western world's few remaining holdouts (坚持不变者). Several Asian nations, including Japan, use the left as well—though many places use both right-hand-drive and left-hand-drive cars.

Antidepressant(抗忧郁) drugs such as Prozac were viewed in the early 1900's as wonder pills that would remove depressive blues for good. But in the past five years, growing scientific evidence has shown these drugs work for only a minority of people. And now a research journal says that these antidepressants can make many patients' depression worse. This alarming suggestion centres on the very chemical that is targeted by antidepressants-serotonin(血清素). Drugs such as Prozac are known as selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors ( or SSRIs). Their aim is to increase the level of this "feel-good" chemical in the brain.

But the new research, published in the journal Frontiers In Evolutionary Psychology, points out that serotonin is like a chemical Swiss Army knife, performing a very wide range of jobs in the brain and body. And when we start changing serotonin levels purposely, it may cause a wide range of unwanted effects. These can include digestive problems and even early deaths in older people, according to the study's lead researcher Paul Andrews. "We need to be much more cautious about use of these drugs," says Andrews, an assistant professor of evolutionary psychology at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.

Previous research has suggested that the drugs provide little benefit for most people with mild depression, and actively help only a few of the most severely depressed. Famous psychologist Irving Kirsch has found that for many patients, SSRIs are no more effective than a placebo pill. A research in 2010 on Danish children found a small, but significant, increase in the risk of heart problems among babies whose mothers had used SSRIs in early pregnancy(怀孕). "The key to understanding these side-effects is serotonin", says Andrews. Serotonin is also the reason why patients can often end up feeling still more depressed after they have finished a course of SSRI drugs. He argues that SSRI antidepressants disturb the brain, leaving the patient an even greater depression than before.

"After long use, when a patient stops taking SSRIs, the brain will lower its levels of serotonin production," he says, adding that it also changes the way receptors in the brain respond to serotonin, making the brain less sensitive to the chemical. These changes are believed to be temporary, but studies indicate that the effects may continue for up to two years.

Most disturbingly of all, Andrews' review features three recent studies which, he says, show that elderly antidepressant users are more likely to die earlier than non-users, even after taking other important variables into account. One study, published in the British Medical Journal last year, found patients given SSRIs were more than 4 percent more likely to die in the next year than those not on the drugs.

"Serotonin is an ancient chemical," says Andrews. "It is regulating many different processes, and when you disturb these things, you can expect that it is going to cause some harm."

Stafford Lightman, professor of medicine at the University of Bristol, and a leading UK expert in brain chemicals and hormones, says Andrews' review highlights some important problems, yet it should also be taken with a pinch of salt. "This report is doing the opposite of what drug companies do," he says. "Drug companies selectively present all the positives in their research, while this search selectively presents all the negatives that can be found. Nevertheless, Andrews' study is useful in that it is always worth pointing out that there is a downside to any medicine." Professor Lightman adds that there is still a great deal we don't know about SSRIs-not least what they actually do in our brains.

When it comes to understanding why the drugs work only for a limited part of patients, U. S. scientists think they might now have the answer. They think that in many depressed patients, it's not only the lack of feel-good serotonin causing their depression, but also a failure in the area of the brain that produces new cells throughout our lives. This area, the hippocampus, is also responsible for regulating mood and memory. Research suggests that in patients whose hippocampus has lost the ability to produce new cells, SSRIs do not bring any benefit.
