I am usually in a bad mood after a long day at work, but on this particular Friday afternoon I was in a high mood. I planned to have a good meal and watch Bridget Jones’s Diary.
My local supermarket is always busy. The first parking space I spotted was convenient, but I’d noticed a woman in an old car circling for a while. I let her have it. On the edge of the car park I backed into the next available spot — it was a tight fit.
In record time I’d made my way through the supermarket and was back in the fresh air. In a rush of good spirits, I emptied my purse change into the hands of a homeless man and helped a struggling woman reverse (倒车) into a parking space.
Just as I spotted my car, I saw the woman I’d let have my car spot earlier. I smiled and wished her a pleasant day.
As I got back into my car, I spotted the same lady looking in at me. “ Hello,” she said, hesitantly (犹豫地). “ This might sound crazy but I was on my way to drop some of my mother’s things off at the charity bins.” I looked quickly at the orange bins in the corner of the parking lot, confused. “ I saw you helping those people, and you seemed so happy. My mom had a dress just like that.”
She looked at me meaningfully. I smiled at her in encouragement, hoping she wouldn’t notice that the dress she was admiring was now full of holes. “ I was going to give these away, but you are just so much like her.” She passed a box in through the window. Shocked, unthinking, I took it automatically (无意识地). “ I think she would like you to have it.” She smiled and walked away.
After a pause, I opened the box. Inside was a beautiful gold necklace. It was the nicest gift I’d ever received, and it was from a complete stranger.
Later, I thought back on the day. I didn’t feel the usual sense of exhaustion. The necklace was around my neck, a warm reminder of human kindness.

Third Culture Kids
As more cities and companies become increasing international, there is a growing number of children that are creating their own sub-culture. Often 41 to as TCKs (Third Culture Kids) or Global Nomads, these students have a(n) 42 impact on the global community.
So who are these Third Culture Kids? They are not a new phenomenon. As one looks 43 history, there is a realization that certain groups of people have led highly 44 lives, a key 45 in describing TCKs. They often 46 their parents into another country and spend a significant part of his or her development years outside the parents’ culture. They are 47 to new cultures and to other people in the community who 48 move constantly. Their numbers 49 into the hundreds of thousands and are increasing. Ease of 50 and constant relocation of people through multinational companies and global business links contribute to this 51 .
The question “Who am I?” is frequently asked by TCKs. They have 52 a host of cultural identities, and have built relationships to all the cultures, 53 not having full ownership of any. Although elements from each culture are absorbed into TCK’s life experience, the sense of 54 is in relationship to others of a similar background.
As you enter into the world of TCKs, one might suspect they are no 55 . But it is 56 , after spending only a short time with them, that they bring a deep knowledge from inside and a special ability to compare 57 and local issues. They represent many countries and cultures. They are the future cross-culturalists and 58 future politicians, diplomats, government employees and educators. They certainly experience a different lifestyle compared to their mono-cultural peers but we can benefit from their global and 59 lives. So, whatever one chooses to label the international students as ---TCKs, Global Nomads, or Global Souls ---we will gain unbelievable 60 ____.

Tattoos (纹身) are enjoying a great popularity among college students in America. They decorate students' shoulders, backs, arms, legs, feet, and even toes. A Harris online survey reported that 26 percent of college students in America had at least one tattoo. In the area of gender(性别), nearly equal percentages of males ( 16% ) and females ( 15% ) have tattoos.
In fact, the tattoos are popular among all age groups, as documented by a 2011 Pew Research Center survey. The Pew research shows that in America, 36 percent of those ages 18 to 25, and 40 percent of those ages 26 to 40, have at least one tattoo. In July 2009, "tattoos" reached its highest ranking ever, coming in as the number two most requested search term on the Internet.
Tattoos can be a sign of beauty or they can be used as a statement of rebellion (叛逆), to become empowered, to remember something or someone, and to feel included. According to an article by Cate Lineberry in Smithsonian.com, January 1, 2007, humans have been tattooed for
thousands of years. " These permanent(永久的) designs-sometimes plain and simple, sometimes elaborate, but always personal—have served as amulets (护身符) , status(身份) symbols, declarations of love, signs of religious beliefs, decorations and even forms of punishment," she said.
Josh Schuhz, a student from University of Maryland, who has had 22 hours of tattoo work done, says he feels empowered by his tattoos. "Getting my tattoo was almost like going through an important ceremony," he said, "I've gotten work done almost everywhere I've traveled: Texas, New York, San Diego, Afghanistan and New Zealand. " Sehuhz's tattoos are inspired by the work of spiritual and visual specialist artist Alex Grey. "I really love art, and Alex Grey's work represents a spiritual energy, an energy not seen by the naked eye," Schuhz explained.
Exercise Science major Shelly Stemper from Yale said she got her tattoo as a way to bond with her older brother. "He's nine years older than me, and we are fond of each other. " she said. "We decided to get tattoos together and had been looking for a tattoo that would be meaningful for both of us. Once, on a family trip to Denali National Park in Alaska, we saw wolves and I chose a wolf paw while my brother a wolf head as our tattoos because we love this animal and they reminds us of our family.
More college students in America began to accept and even welcome the art of tattooing. Tattoos are certain to be part of our culture for years to come, and due to the human desire to express oneself, tattoos promise to grow in diversity.

It was the first snow of the winter---an exciting day for every child but not for most teachers. Up to now, I had been old enough to dress myself, but today I would need some help. Miss Finlayson, my kindergarten teacher, Ontario, had been through best snow days many times, but I think she may still remember this one.
I managed to get into my wool snow trousers. But I struggled with my jacket because it didn’t fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear the ugly clothes. At least my hat and scarf were mine, and they were quite pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots.
In her calm, motherly voice she said, “By the end of the winter, you will all be able to put on your own boots.” I didn’t realize at the time that it was more a statement of hope than of confidence.
I handed her my boots and stuck out my feet. Like most children, I expected the adult to do all the work. After much pushing, she managed to get the first one into place and then, with a sigh, worked the second one on too.
I announced, “They are on the wrong feet.”
She struggled to get the boots off and went through the joyless task of putting them on again.
“They are my brother’s boots, you know, I hate them.”
Somehow, from long years of practice, she managed to act as though I wasn’t an annoying little girl. She struggled with me. She asked “now, where are your mittens(手套)?”
I looked into her eyes and said, “I didn’t want to lose them, so I hid them in the toes of my boots.”
5. The little girl was more satisfied with her __________.
A. trousers B. hat C. boots D. jackets
6. Miss Finlayson had difficulty with the little girl’s boots mainly because________.
A. the girl got them from her brother B. they were on the wrong feet
C. the girl put something in them D. they did not fit the girl well
7. Why does the author say Miss Finlayson would remember that first snow day?
A. Because the little girl was in her brother’s clothes.
B. Because the little played a trick on her.
C. Because the little girl wore a pretty scarf.
D. Because it was the most exciting day of the winter.
8. It can be inferred from the passage that Miss Finlayson _______________.
A. was gradually losing patience with the little girl
B. was losing confidence in the little girl
C. became disappointed with the little girl
D. got curious about the little girl

Glacier Bay is one of the most famous parks in America, located in the state of Alaska. This park in the southeastern part of the state covers more than 1 million hectares of Alaskan wilderness. It includes mountains, glaciers (冰川), bays, and even rainforests. Glacier Bay supports hundreds of kinds of animals, including many species of birds, fish, bears, whales and sea lions.
As its name suggests, much of Glacier Bay National Park is covered by glaciers. A glacier is a large area of ice that moves slowly down a slope (斜坡) or valley, or over a wide area of land. Glaciers cover more than 5,000 square kilometers of the park.
Glacial ice has shaped the land over the last seven million years. The glaciers found in the park today are what remains from an ice advance known as the Little Ice Age. That period began about 4,000 years ago.
During the Little Ice Age, the cold weather caused the ice to grow and advance. That situation continued until about 1,700s, when the climate began to warm. The higher temperatures caused the ice to start melting. That melting led the huge glacier to separate into more than 1,000 different glaciers.
The extremely tall and jagged (参差不齐的) mountains seen in Glacier Bay National Park were formed by the ice advancing and then melting over time. The melting of the ice also created water that filled in and created the many fjords (峡湾) within the park. Fjords are narrow parts of the ocean that sit between cliffs or mountains.
The huge amount of water from the melted ice killed off many kinds of plants. Vegetation returned to the area over the next 200 years. The regrowth in plants also brought back many animals to the land. This return of life to Glacier Bay is why it is sometimes called “a land reborn” by people.

A. The function of Glacier Bay.
B. The climate of Glacier Bay.
C. The area of Alaskan wilderness.

A. Many slopes or valleys came into being.
B. The glaciers grew and advanced.
C. Different glaciers became a whole one.
D. The fjords became narrow.
11. What is mainly discussed in the last paragraph?
A. How the water killed off the plants.
B. When vegetation returned to Glacier Bay.
C. What the relationship between plants and animals is.
D. Why Glacier Bay is sometimes called “a land reborn”.
It’s 5:00 in the morning when the alarm rings in my ears.I roll out of bed and walk blindly through the dark into the bathroom.I turn on the light and put on my glasses. The house is still as I walk downstairs while my husband and three kids sleep peacefully.Usually I go for a long run,but today I choose my favorite exercise DVD insanity.Sweat pours down my face and into my eyes.My heart races as I face my body to finish each movement. As I near the end of the exercise,I feel extremely tired, but a smile is of my face. It’s a smile because the DVD is over, but a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit.
Some people enjoy shopping, smoking, food, work,or even chocolate. But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town.Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite of their grandmother’s chocolate cake. They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my “no thank you,” or by my choice to have a salad.Over the years,I have learned it’s okay to just say “no.” I shouldn’t feel sorry for refusing food that I don’t want to eat.
So what drives me to roll out of bed at 5:00 a.m.?What gives me the reason to just say to ice cream?Commitment.A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily anxiety, increases self–confidence and energy, extends life and above all improves my body shape. This is the point where a smile appears on my face as I look at myself in the mirror or try on my favorite pair of jeans that now fit just right. It’s through commitment and sweat that I can make a difference within myself inside and out.
