Break Your Bad Mood
Having one of those days or weeks-- when everything seems to annoy you? Even if you do nothing about it, your bad mood will probably go away after some time. But with a little effort, you can forget it much faster--often within a day or two.
Walk it off
Exercise is the most popular bad-- mood buster. A person who's in a bad mood has low energy and high tension,
taking a fast ten--minute walk, or doing some quick exercises can do wonders towards changing that bad mood.
Tune it out
Listening to your favorite music for a while can also make tension go away quickly, because music starts associations with past positive experiences we've had.
Give yourself a pep (激励的)talk
Stop and listen to what's on your mind. Bad moods are often started by too many negative thoughts. Write them all down on paper--the pessimistic messages you've been giving yourself and then give optimistic answers. ("I still don't have a job." vs "I have two interviews next week.")
Reduce your stress
Relaxation techniques are wonderful modifiers. These include deep breathing, stretching and visualizing, all of which sound complicated but aren't. One easy way to visualize: close your eyes and picture a favorite place, such as the beach. Another simple way to be against distress is to make a to-do list. One reason for being in a bad mood is feeling you have no options. By taking control over certain areas, you realize you're not helpless. You can make changes in your mood and life.
Avoid things that won't improve your mood
TV may not help much: You need to increase your energy level and stimulate your mind-something that the TV show "Neighbors" won't do. And before you reach for that piece of cake and coffee, think about how mood and food are linked. Sugar and caffeine contribute to depressed moods. A better choice? Research shows that carbohydrates, such as potatoes and pasta(意大利面食), produce a calming effect on people who have a desire for them.

B. it keeps you sitting without moving

I wrote a business plan the other day. I gave it to my husband for suggestions. After reading it, he said, “I don’t think this is up to your usual standards.” I said, “I need more information. What doesn’t work?” He said he wasn’t sure. I then took the letter and reread it.
He asked, “How about if I look at it again and make notes between the space?” I agreed. A half hour later I looked at his notes and told him he didn’t understand the situation and what I really wanted to express. He shrugged (耸肩) and said OK. I took the letter and went back to my computer and again revised. As I was writing, I could see my letter improving based on his suggestions. When I finished, I proudly handed the letter back to my husband. He read it for the third time and said, “It’s still not right but I couldn’t exactly say.” I was a little annoyed and then told him I was the writer and I had seen some goofy letters he sent out. But I picked up my letter and went back to the computer.
After an hour of revisions, I went back to my husband apologetically with letter in hand. I told him I was sorry for what I’d said and asked if he would please read the letter again because I did value his contribution. Being a very patient and kind-hearted fellow, he once again read my letter and declared that it was fine.
This all leads me to the following: When you ask for advice on a project, be appreciative and grateful. Understand that the advice and suggestions you get may be negative. Understand that it may mean more work for you. And keep in mind that the final responsibility for the project is still yours. So be modest and thankful even if he or she has noted some problems.
25. Why did the author give her business plan to her husband at first?
A. To show off her excellent work.
B. To have him type it on the computer.
C. To ask him to make some changes from all details.
D. To ask him to give her some advice.
26. The author’s husband shrugged after hearing her words because he ________.
A. believed in his judgement but couldn’t find why
B. knew there was nothing wrong in the business plan
C. doubted about himself since he found no excuses
D. believed he himself was right and knew the roots
27. We can infer from the passage that the author’s husband was _________.
A. selfish, proud and determined
B. good at expressing himself
C. honest, kind and patient
D. humorous, active and careful
28. The author wants to tell us that if you ask for suggestions, ________.
A. do accept all suggestions from the givers
B. don’t get upset if some are negative
C. do keep silent before taking action
D. do be grateful and confident

In Japan, hikikomori is a word used to describe the young people who hide away. ” They want to go out in the world, they want to make friends, but they can’t,” says Tamaki Saito, a doctor who has been studying the social problem since the early 1990s.
Although it’s hard to tell the exact number of today’s hikikomori, it actually remains very high. A 2010 study for the Japanese Cabinet Office reported it was 700,000. Since sufferers are always hidden away, Saito himself places the number higher, at around one million. And the age of hikikomori seems to have risen over the last twenty years. Before it was twenty-one----now it is thirty-two.
What first caused a boy to hide away from society might be slight---poor grades or a broken heart, for example---but it can also become a source of suffering. And powerful social forces can strongly keep him staying in his bedroom.
One such force is sekentei, a person’s reputation in the neighborhood and the difficulty he or she has in impressing others. The longer hikikomori remain apart from society, the more they realize their social failure. They lose whatever confidence they had and the possibility of leaving home.
Andy Furlong, an expert at the University of Glasgow, connects the increase in the number of hikikomori with the rapid economic growth in the 1980s and the slowdown in the 1990s. It was at this point that the conveyor belt (传送带)of good school grades leading to good university places leading to jobs-for-life broke down. The Japanese youth at the time were faced with the reality of short-term and part-time work.
And it came with the loss of respect. Those who change their jobs frequently are called “freeters”---a mixture of the word “freelance” and the German word for “worker”, arbeiter. In public discussion, freeters are often connected with “neets”--- a word made up from the first letters of “not in education, employment or training”. Neets, freeters and hikikomori are often used to describe the good-for-nothing young people.
Needless to say, what matters most is how to get those who hide away to return to society. Tamaki Saito’s approach is to begin with “reorganizing” the relationship between these patients and their parents.
21. What can we learn about hikikomori?
A. They are very popular in Japan. B. Most young people are hikikomori.
C. There are 700,000 hikikomori in Japan. D. They are cut off from the outside world.
22. What influence does sekentei have on hikikomori?
A. It opens up a wider world for them. B. It stops them from leaving home.
C. It offers them social knowledge. D. It helps them impress others.
23. According to Furlong, why did more Japanese youth hide away?
A. because they disliked social activities B. because they didn’t perform well at school
C. because they had little interest in hard work D. because they couldn’t find good, regular jobs
24. In Japan, freeters and neets .
A. don’t want to work at all B. refer to full-time workers
C. are not accepted by society D. dislike working with others
25. In the next part, what would the author most probably discuss?
A. how to help hikikomori out B. why Saito studies hikikomori
C. why there are many hikikomori D. how to get along with hikikomori

“I see you’ve got a bit of water on your coat,’’ said the man at the petrol station. ‘‘Is it raining out there?’’ ‘‘No. it’s pretty nice,” I replied, checking my sleeve. “Oh, right. A pony(马驹) bit me earlier.”
As it happened, the bite was virtually painless: more the kind of small bite you might get from a naughty child. The pony responsible was queuing up for some ice cream in the car park near Haytor, and perhaps thought I'd jumped in ahead of him.
The reason why the ponies here are naughty is that Haytor is a tourist—heavy area and tourists are constantly feeding the ponies foods, despite signs asking them not to. By feeding the ponies, tourists increase the risk of them getting hit by a car, and make them harder to gather during the area’s annual pony drift(迁移).
The purpose of a pony drift is to gather them up so their health can be checked, the baby ones can be stopped from feeding on their mothers’ milk, and those who’ve gone beyond their limited area can be returned to their correct area. Some of them are also later sold, in order to limit the number of ponies according to the rules set by Natural England.
Three weeks ago, I witnessed a small near—disaster a few miles west of here. While walking, I noticed a pony roll over on his back. “Hello!” I said to him, assuming he was just rolling for fun, but he was very still and, as I got closer, I saw him kicking his legs in the air and breathing heavily. I began to properly worry. about him. Fortunately, I managed to get in touch with a Dartmoor’s Livestock Protection officer and send her a photo. The officer immediately sent a local farmer out to check on the pony. The pony had actually been trapped between two rocks. The farmer freed him, and he began to run happily around again.
Dartmoor has 1,000 or so ponies, who play a critical role in creating the diversity of species in this area. Many people are working hard to preserve these ponies, and trying to come up with plans to find a sustainable(可持续的) future for one of Dartmoor’s most financially—troubled elements.
4. Why are tourists asked not to feed the ponies?
A. To protect the tourists from being bitten. B. To keep the ponies off the petrol station.
C. To avoid putting the ponies in danger. D. To prevent the ponies from fighting.
5. One of the purposes of the annual pony drift is _________.
A. to feed baby ponies on milk B. to control the number of ponies
C. to expand the habitat for ponies D. to sell the ponies at a good price
6. What was the author’s first reaction when he saw a pony roll on its back?
A. He freed it from the trap. B. He called a protection officer.
C. He worried about it very much. D. He thought of it as being naughty.
7. What does the author imply about the preservation of Dartmoor’s ponies?
A. It lacks people’s involvement. B. It costs a large amount of money.
C. It will affect tourism in Dartmoor. D. It has caused an imbalance of species.

Dear Sir,
I’m glad to learn that part-time assistants were wanted in your studio and I’d like to have a try.
I’m a student who is graduated from high school soon. Before attending the college, I’ll have a long holiday and I’m determined to make the best of them. Since childhood, I have developed a strong interest in storytelling and watching films. My teacher thinks high of my performance in the language class, when I have also acquired a good knowledge of American movie industry. Except that, I am monitor of my class and thus have gained many experience in management.
I will undertake full responsibility and spare no effort to do my share of work. I am fully convinced that through communication with the staffs, I can get some valuable work experience as well as develop my social skills.
I’m looking forward to receiving your reply soon. Thank you for your consider.
Yours,
Li Hua
THANK-you cards--heartfelt expressions of gratitude for gifts, services and general kindness--seem to be rare in an age when the Internet continues to reduce human interaction.
Although our society has changed greatly over the past century, the etiquette of thank-you notes has not.
While most people would agree that thank-you notes under these circumstances are a necessity, there are still those who forever postpone or are forgetful for unknown reasons.
And at no time of the year are thank-you notes more visible (or lacking) than June, the month of graduations, and the beginning of summer parties.
"It's a must-do thing. A real thank you does not come by e-mail. It comes in the mail in an envelope. And what comes out of an envelope is a beautiful thing to touch and to handle and to pass around for everyone to read," said etiquette expert Letitia Baldrige.
Don't think for a second that Baldrige is old-fashioned. Handwritten thank-you notes--any handwritten correspondence, for that matter- have taken on an air of extra importance and dignity (庄重) in this e-hyper (电子狂躁的) world.
Baldrige remains hopeful that the art may be enjoying a renaissance (复兴,再生).
More than simply obeying rules of etiquette, thank-you cards are a sign of caring.
"They're more important now than ever," expert Peter Post says. "You are building a relationship. And part of building that relationship is that you acknowledge when someone has done something nice for you. "
"The payoff," Post says, "can be huge. The more we do it, the more it comes back to us, and it's a benefit to us all. It makes our world a little bit nicer place to live in. "
25. Nowadays thank-you cards seem to be rare mainly because ______.
A. people think that they are out of fashion
B. it is quicker to say thanks by e-mail
C. the Internet has reduced people's contact
D. people are too busy to remember these things
26. From the context, the word "etiquette" in the second paragraph probably means ______.
A. old objects for sale
B. rules for people to obey
C. hand-made articles
D. customs for polite behavior
27. The author implies in this article that ______.
A. old-fashioned people take a negative attitude to e-mails
B. the changing society is making people impolite and lazy
C. modern technology is driving people apart
D. the e-hyper world is not a nice place to live in
28. What’s Baldrige’s attitude towards handwritten thank-you cards?
A. Regretful to disappear
B. Promising to come back
C. Old-fashioned to keep
D. Unnecessary between friends
The flood last month in the east was a real disaster, ______ 19 people dead and 78 missing.
A.having left B.to leave C.left D.leaving

Some people will do just about anything to save money. And I am one of them.Take my family's last vacation. It was my six﹣year﹣old son's winter break from school, and we were heading home from Fort Lauderdale after a weeklong trip. The flight was overbooked, and Delta, the airline, offered us 400perpersonincreditstogiveupourseatsandleavethenextday.IhadmeetingsinNewYork,soIhadtogetback.Butthatdidn'tmeanmyhusbandandmysoncouldn'tstay.Itookmynine﹣month﹣oldandtookoffforhome.Thenextday,myhusbandandsonwereofferedmorecreditstotakeanevenlaterflight.Yes,Iencouraged﹣okay,ordered﹣themtowaititoutattheairport,to"earn"moreDeltaDollars.Ourtotaltake:1,600.Not bad, huh?
Now some people may think I'm a bad mother and not such a great wife either. But as a big﹣time bargain hunter,I know the value of a dollar. And these days,a good deal is something few of us can afford to pass up.
I've made a living looking for the best deals and exposing (揭露) the worst tricks.I have been the consumer reporter of NBC's Today show for over a decade.I have written a couple of books including one titled Tricks of the Trade:A Consumer Survival Guide. And I really do what I believe in.
I tell you this because there is no shame in getting your money's worth.I'm also tightfisted when it comes to shoes, clothes for my children, and expensive restaurants. But I wouldn't hesitate to spend on a good haircut. It keeps its shape longer, and it's the first thing people notice. And I will also spend on a classic piece of furniture.Quality lasts.

Sunscreens (防晒霜) can offer protection from two types of ultraviolet (UV) rays (紫外线): UVB, which according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, are the chief cause of sunburn and play a key role in the development of skin cancer, and UVA, which get through the skin more deeply and are largely responsible for skin aging and wrinkling, as well as skin cancer risk. The SPF (防晒指数) measurement on sunscreens refers to the UVB protection level — and the number may not mean what you think it does. SPF 15 doesn’t protect you from 15% of UVB rays, just as SPF 100 doesn’t protect you from 100% of the rays. In fact, as you get into the higher numbered SPF sunscreens (think: 50 and above), the difference in UVB protection is actually pretty small.
Theoretically, though the increase in UVB protection with a super-high SPF sunscreen may be not worth considering, it may help, and certainly can’t hurt, to use it — that is, as long as you do so correctly. “The only downside is whether you’re giving yourself a sense of false security,” Dr. Gohara says.
Indeed, as Dr. Wang also pointed out, when people choose increased SPFs, they may actually feel so protected by the product that they finally ignore proper sun protection. “When people use really high SPF products, they tend not to reuse, they tend to stay out in the sun much longer, and they don’t use other protective measures such as clothing and hats,” he says. Regardless of any increase in protection that a high SPF may or may not offer, one thing is certain: It doesn’t give your body a free pass from sunburns, aging, or cancers, and it doesn’t protect you from those things for any greater length of time than the lower SPF options. Both Dr. Wang and Dr. Gohara emphasized that, no matter what the SPF is, it’s important to reapply your sunscreen every two hours.
