Nowro
z
Iranian New Year or Nowroz is celebrated on the first day of spring sometime in March. Nowroz ceremonies are symbolic represent ations of good and evil. People sing, dance and parade as in a carnival through the streets with drums and trumpets to spread the news of the coming new year.
Rosh Hashanah
The Jewish New Year is called “Rosh Hashanah”, and is celebrated in the month of September. It is a holy time when people think of the things they have done wrong in the past, and promise to do better in the future. Special prayers are held, and an instrument called a Shofar is played. Children are given new clothes, and New Year loaves are baked and fruits are consumed to remind people of harvest time.
Shogatsu
In Japan, the New Year (Shogatsu)
celebrations are from January 1 to January 3 and most Japanese don’t work during these days. In Japan, years are traditionally seen as completely separate from each other, and the New Year is a fresh start. This means that in December all the duties should be completed. Parties are held to forget the worries and troubles of the old year. Homes and cars are decorated. On New Year’s Eve, most people spend their time with their families.
Muslim New Year
The Muslim New Year falls eleven days earlier than the previous year because the Muslim calendar is based on the movements of the moon. In Iran, people celebrate the New Year in March. As the New Year approaches, Muslims set grains of wheat or barley in small dishes and sprinkle(泼洒)them with water. When the New Year arrives, the growth of the sprouted(发芽的)grains reminds people of spring and a new year of life.
Bahai New Year
The Bahai People have their own calenda
r consisting of nineteen months of nineteen days plus a couple of extra days between the eighteenth and nineteenth months. They have however adopted the Iranian custom of beginning the New Year in the spring equinox(春分). The day begins at sunset rather than midni
ght, and the New Year celebrations are held on the evening of March 20th.

As the old saying goes, laughter is the best medicine. 36 . However, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects is has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health.
37 . People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, makes the heart beat quicker and makes people breathe deeper; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. 38 .
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. 39 . The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which diminishes both stress and pain.
40 . They try to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.
A. Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body.
B. Until recently, few people took the saying seriously.
C. Therefore, people are taught to laugh.
D. The group that tolerated (忍耐) the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program.
E. As a result, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics.

Scientists are trying to copy the process of photosynthesis(光合作用)by making a “man-made leaf” to produce clean power.
Through photosynthesis plants use sunlight to change water and carbon dioxide into sugar. It is the most effective use of solar energy on the earth. All the power needed in a year could be met by the energy contained in the sunlight hitting the earth in one hour.
Researchers at Imperial College in London have begun a £1 million study of the so-called “man-made leaf”, hoping to produce a system that can produce clean energy the way leaves do, The Guardian reports. It could be used in fuel cells to make electricity and to power clean vehicles without harming the environment.
Scientists forecast that if man-made photosynthesis systems could use 10 percent of the sunlight falling on them they would only need to cover 0.16 percent of the earth’s surface to satisfy global energy needs.
James Barber, a biologist at the college and leader of the project, tells The Guardian, “If a leaf can do it, we can do it even better. It doesn’t mean that you try to imitate the leaf exactly. The key lies in the basic principle of how it works. Leonardo da Vinci tried to design flying machines with feathers, but in the end we’ve built planes like 747s and Airbus 380s, completely different from birds, and in many ways better.”
“The challenge is to get hydrogen(氢气)out of water using a ready supply of energy,” Barber adds. Scientists can already produce hydrogen by breaking down water, but the process is quite expensive. John Loughhead, executive director of the UK Energy Research Centre, tells The Guardian, “ We know that, since plants have already evolved to do it, it’s fundamentally(基本上) a workable process on a large scale. In the long run, the only sustainable(可持续的)form of energy we’ve got is the sun. What makes this look really interesting is that we’re starting from a base we know is workable.
32. If scientists succeed, what will the “man-made leaf” provide?
A. Sugar. B. Water and carbon dioxide.
C. Clean power. D. Electricity.
33. Why is Leonardo da Vinci mentioned in Paragraph 5?
A. He tried to design flying machines with feathers, similar to what researchers developing the man-made leaf have in mind.
B. Real planes are completely different from the ones he imagined, just as the “man-made leaf” will be different from a real one.
C. It was his invention that inspired the scientists to design the “man-made leaf”.
D. Planes are better than the machines he designed, so the “man-made leaf” will be better than a real one.
34. What will be a breakthrough for the “man-made leaf” project?
A. How to get hydrogen out of water cheaply.
B. How to copy the process of photosynthesis.
C. How to get enough sunlight and hydrogen.
D. How to get enough funds to support the research.
35. What is the researchers’ attitude toward this project?
A. Positive. B . Negative. C. Objective. D. Passive.
Hello, everyone, welcome to toady’s presentation. Here we will introduce how we see the development of the motor car in the short to medium term ,and that is why we have invited all of you here today.
To begin with, let’s talk about power. It is clear that petrol-driven engines have no future. Already there are many alternative fuel vehicles on the market, powered by anything from solar power to natural gas. Some independent thinkers have even produced cars that run on vegetable oil. But as we all know, of all these alternative fuel vehicles, the most practical are electric vehicles. Sure, in the past electric vehicles had their problems, namely, a limited driving range, and very few recharging points, which limited their use. Now, however, recent developments in electric vehicle technology mean they can match conventional petrol engines in terms of performance and safety. Let’s not forget the electric vehicles are cleaner. Plus, importantly, the power source is rechargeable, so this doesn’t involve using any valuable resources.
With the development of technology, very soon, cars will be linked to GPS satellites, so they will do all the driving for you. What controls remain for the users will be auto-based, so, for example, you’ll just have to say “a bit warmer”, and the air conditioning will adjust automatically. You’ll also be able to receive email, music and movies, all via an internet link. So just type in the destination you want, sit back, sleep, watch a movie, whatever.
5. What is the presentation mainly about?
A. Advice on the purchase of cars
B. Information about the new green-fuel vehicles.
C. Trends for the development of the motor car.
D. Solutions to global fuel shortage.
6. What used to restrict the use of electric vehicles?
A. Limited driving range. B. Huge recharging expenses.
C. The short life of batteries. D. The unaffordable high price.
7. What does the speaker say about electric vehicles of today?
A. They need to be further improved.
B. They can easily switch to natural gas.
C. They are more cost-effective than vehicles powered by solar energy.
D. They can match conventional motor cars in performance and safety.
The how-to book can be of help to _____ wants to do the job.

It`s a sunny afternoon here in Texas, and my wife Barbara is at the park again, counting and recording the number of eggs laid by monarch butterflies. After collecting her data, she`ll share it with the professional scientist who recruited her. In another state, our friend Antonio listens for frogs by visiting 12 different sites, four times a year. He has been submitting(提交)his findings to scientists for almost 20 years now.And on the other side of the country, our niece Emily is catching native bees, putting tiny tags on them, and handing in weekly reports to the biology department at a local university. Nobody is Paying Barbara, Antonio, or Emily for their efforts, but all three consider themselves lucky to be "citizen scientists.”
When volunteers participate as assistants in activities like these, they are engaging in citizen science, a valuable research technique that invites the public to assist in gathering information. Some of them are science teachers or students, but most are simply amateurs who enjoy spending time in nature. They also take pride in aiding scientists and indirectly helping to protect the environment. The movement they are involved in is not a new one. In fact, its roots go back over a hundred years. One of the earliest projects of this type is the Christmas Bird Count, started by the National Audubon Society in 1900. However, citi zen science projects are burgeoning more than ever: over 60 of them were mentioned at a meeting of the Ecological Society of America not long age.
In formal studies, Professional scientists and other experts need to maintain the highest possible standards. For research to be accepted as valid.it must not only be thorough, but also objective and accurate. Some might argue that citizen scientists cannot maintain the necessary attention to detail ,or that amateurs will misunderstand the context of the investigation and make mistake when collecting and organizing .In other words, can citizen science be considered truly reliable?
Two recent studies show that it can. The first focused on volunteer knowledge and skills. In this study, a scientist asked volunteers to identify(鉴定、识别)types of crabs along the Atlantic coast of the US. He found that almost all adult volunteers could perform the task and even third graders in elementary school had an 80% success rate. The second study compared professional and nonprofessional methods. Following a strict traditional procedure,a group of 12 scuba divers identified 106 species of fish in the Caribbean. Using a procedure designed by professionals to be more relaxed and enjoyable for volunteers, a second group of 12 divers spent the same amount of time in the same waters. Surprisingly, the second method was even more successful: this group identified a total of 137 species. Results like these suggest that research assisted by amateurs can be trusted when scientists organize it.
33. The citizen scientists in Paragraph I
A. compare their data with that of other volunteers
B. earn some money for the information they gather
C. monitor the life cycles of insects in laboratories
D. report on their results or activities to professionals
34. The word burgeoning in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to 。
A. causing arguments B. increasing rapidly
C. losing popularity D. receiving awards
35. Why does the author emphasize.80% success rate in Paragraph 4?
A. To contrast negatively with the adults'success rate.
B. To show the high quality of the overall results.
C. To emphasize how many types of crabs there are.
D. To reveal the elementary students'lack of skills.

Sleep deprivation(缺失)is an important hidden factor in lowering the achievement of school pupils, according to researchers carrying out international education tests.
It is a particular problem in richer countries with sleep experts linking it to the use of mobile phones and computers in bedroom late at night. Sleep deprivation is such a serious problem that lessons have to be dragged down to a lower level to suit sleep-deprived learners, the study found. The international comparison, carried out by Boston College, found the United States to have the highest number of sleep-deprived students, with 73% of 9- and 10-year-olds and 80% of 13- and 14-year-olds identified by their teachers as being negatively affected.
In literacy(读写能力) tests there were 76% of 9- and 10-year-olds lacking sleep. This was much higher than the international average of 47% of primary pupils needing more sleep and 57% among the secondary age group.
Other countries with the most sleep-deprived youngsters were New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Australia, England, Ireland and France. High-performing Finland is also among the most lacking in sleep. Countries with the best records for getting enough sleep include Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Japan and Malta.
The analysis was part of the huge date-gathering process for global education rankings, the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study(TIMSS)and Progress in International Reading Literacy Study(PIRLS)
“I think we underestimate the impact of sleep. Our data show that across countries internationally, on average, children who have more sleep achieve higher in maths, science and reading. That is exactly what our data show,” says Chad Minnich of the TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center.
“It’s the same link for children who are lacking basic nutrition,” says Mr Minnich, based at the Lynch School of Education, Boston College. “If you are unable to concentrate, to attend mentally, you are unable to achieve at your best level, because your mind and body are in need of something more basic. Sleep is a fundamental need for all children. If teachers report such large proportions of children suffering from lack of sleep, it’s having a significant impact. But worse than that, teachers are having to adjust their instruction based on those children who are suffering from a lack of sleep. The children who are suffering from a lack of sleep are driving down instruction.”
That means that even the children who are getting enough sleep are still suffering from this sleep-related lowering.
24.What did the researchers of Boston College try to find?
A. Why children don’t get enough sleep B. How many hours children sleep every night
C. The relationship between sleep and test results D. The relationship between sleep and health
25. Many children suffer from sleep deprivation because _________.
A. they sit in front of the TV for too long
B. they can hardly sleep soundly and deeply
C. their homework occupies too much of their time
D. modern technological devices consume a lot of their time
26. Which of the following countries has the most sleep-deprived students?
A. Japan B. Malta
C. Finland D. Portugal
27. Why are children who get enough sleep also victims?
A. Because they are disturbed by sleep-deprived students
B. Because teaching is driven down by sleep-deprived students
C. Because they have to spend time helping sleep-deprived students
D. Because the teachers waste time disciplining sleep-deprived students

I grew up in a busy family, both parents working jobs that demanded their attention 24/7. I was little and rushed around, always at risk of moving too quickly, missing the bus and making mistakes.
Luckily, my enthusiasm for the world took me from the troubles at home to climbing mountains. When I was 19, I learned something called the "rest step" from an old mountain climber. He advised me to rest in the middle of each step completely but briefly. The rest step, which I still practice today, allows me to move quickly yet still find a pause in every step. Even when needs seem most urgent, the practice of slowing down offers calm and clarity.
In 1987, I was in Pakistan to climb Gasherbrum II. It was a very big mountain. Our expedition (探险队) faced more than its share of difficulty: A long storm wiped out most of our good and an avalanche (雪崩) destroyed our camp site. One of our party developed altitude sickness. In the face of each disaster, we carefully developed a new plan. Snow caves replaced lost tents. Soups replaced gull meals. Eventually we climbed slowly to the top, and then made our way sagely down.
There is magic in any faith. Every once in a while, my belief in pace rises up, slows me down and shows me a view of a sunset, a smile from a stranger or a conversation with a child. I owe these moments to what I learned from an old mountain climber and have practiced ever since.

I received a call today asking if I would be willing to bring food to a family in need. The mother was having a major operation and would be lying down for several weeks. Of course, I responded with an immediate “Yes!”. As I planned the meal in my head, I reflected on how many times over the years I had been asked to prepare food. I have done so countless times with a very open heart.
But the truly amazing thing is that I have received double over the course of my life. When my mother passed away, our house was filled with fresh dinners for weeks. A woman from the church of our community stopped by each evening with some food. The gift of food was her small way of trying to ease our pain.
Later in my life, when I was on bed rest during my pregnancy with twins, women of the church again stepped in to help. They arranged babysitting for my two year old daughter, and brought lovely dinners to our house. Even when I was put in the hospital, my husband would bring cooked meals to my hospital room. How we relied on these dinners to feed my tired husband and young daughter.
Food is all about comfort. It feeds our bodies, but it can also feed our souls. When you hear people talking about their favorite holidays, it usually includes their feelings connected with sharing food. I know that I will have many more opportunities in my lifetime to prepare food for others. It is truly a gift I want to prepare and deliver to someone in need.

I can still remember it as if it happened yesterday. I was a college freshman and had stayed up most of the night before laughing and talking with friends. Now just before my first class of the day my eyelids were feeling heavier and heavier and my head was drifting down to my desk to make my textbook
a pillow. A few minutes’ nap time before class couldn’t hurt, I thought.
Boom! I lifted my head immediately and my eyes opened wider than saucers. I looked around with my heart beating quickly trying to find the cause of the noise. My young professor was looking back at me with a mischievous, boyish smile on his face. He had intentionally dropped the pile of textbooks he was carrying onto my desk. “Good morning !” he said, still smiling. “I’m glad to see everyone is awake. Now let’s get started.”
For the next hour I wasn’t sleepy at all. It wasn’t from the shock of my professor’s textbook alarm clock either. Instead, it was from the attractive discussion he led. With knowledge and good humor, he made the material come alive. His insights were full of both wisdom and loving kindness. And the enthusiasm and joy that he taught with were contagious(有感染力的). I left the classroom not only wide awake, but a little smarter and a little better as well.
I learned something far more important than not sleeping in class that day too. I learned that if you are going to do something in this life, do it well, do it with joy, and make it an expression of your love. What a glorious place this world would be if all of us did our work joyously and well ! What a beautiful world we could create if every doctor, teacher, musician, cook, waitress, poet, miner, farmer, and laborer made their work an expression of their love ! Don’t sleepwalk your way through life then. Wake up! Let your love fill your work and your soul. Life is too short not to live it well.

Hundreds of years ago,a Roman army came north from England to make war on Scotland. The Scots,a brave people, loved their country very much. They fought hard to drive the enemy out of Scotland, but there were too many Romans. It looked as if the Romans would win.
One night, the leader of Scots marched his soldiers to the top of a hill. “We will rest here tonight, my men,” he said. “Tomorrow we will fight one more battle. We must win or we will die.”
They were all very tired, so they ate their supper quickly and fell asleep. There were four guards on duty, but they were very tired, too, and one by one, they fell asleep.
The Romans were not asleep. Quickly they gathered at the foot of the hill. Slowly they climbed up the hillside, taking care not to make a sound. Closer and closer they came to the sleeping Scots. They were almost at the top. A few minutes more, the war would be over. Suddenly, one of them put his foot on a thistle(蓟). He cried out and his sudden cry woke the Scots. In a moment, they were on their feet and ready for a battle. The fighting was hard but it did not last long. The Scots wiped out the Romans and saved their country.
