Another thing, remember that you matter. If you have something to say, force yourself to say it clearly and loudly. You can do this without sounding angry. _____19_____    Move towards your goal. _____20_____ Having a purpose and fl goal is great to feed your confidence. Start with the little things like the stuff you have been putting off for later. The more things you accomplish, the better you feel.

Insurance companies are normally willing to insure anything, but it must be unique to insure a dish. It was a unusual pie dish, for it was eighteen feet in long and six feet in width. They had been purchased by a local authority so that an enormous pie could baked for an annual fair. The pie committee decided that the best way to transport would be by a canal, so they insured it for the trip. Short after it was launched, the pie committee went to the loacal inn to celebrate. In the same time, a number of teenager climbed on to the dish and held a little party of their own. Dancing proved to be more than the dish could bear, but during the party it capsized(倾覆) and sink in seven feet of water.

You're not doomed to toss and turn every night. Although you might not be able to control all of the factors that relate to your sleep, you can adopt habits that encourage better sleep. Start with these simple sleep tips.

No. 1: Stick to a sleep schedule

Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even on weekends, holidays and days off. Being consistent reinforces (加强) your body's sleep-wake cycle and helps promote better sleep at night. If you don't fall asleep within about 15 minutes, get up and do something relaxing. Go back to bed when you're tired.

No. 2: Pay attention to what you eat and drink

Don't go to bed either hungry or stuffed. Your discomfort might keep you up. Also limit how much you drink before bed, to prevent disruptive middle-of-the-night trips to the toilet. Nicotine, caffeine and alcohol deserve caution, too. The stimulating effects of nicotine and caffeine — which take hours to wear off — can ruin quality sleep.

No. 3: Create a bedtime ritual

Do the same things each night to tell your body it's time to wind down. This might include taking a warm bath or shower, reading a book, or listening to light music. Be careful of using the TV or other electronic devices as part of your bedtime ritual. Some research suggests that screen time or other media use before bedtime has impact on sleep.

No. 4: Get comfortable

Create a room that's ideal for sleeping. Often, this means cool, dark and quiet. Consider using room-darkening shades, earplugs, a fan or other devices to create an environment that suits your needs.

Your mattress and pillow can contribute to better sleep, too. Since the features of good bedding are subjective, choose what feels most comfortable to you. If you have children or pets, set limits on how often they sleep with you — or insist on separate sleeping quarters.

No. 5: Limit daytime naps

Long daytime naps can affect nighttime sleep — especially if you're struggling with poor sleep quality at night. If you choose to nap during the day, limit yourself to about 10 to 30 minutes and make it during the mid-afternoon.

If you work nights, you'll need to make an exception to the rules about daytime sleeping. In this case, keep your window coverings closed so that sunlight — which adjusts your internal clock — doesn't interrupt your daytime sleep.

No. 6: Include physical activity in your daily routine

Regular physical activity can promote better sleep, helping you to fall asleep faster and to enjoy deeper sleep. Timing is important, though. If you exercise too close to bedtime, you might be too energized to fall asleep. If this seems to be an issue for you, exercise earlier in the day.

No. 7: Manage stress

When you have too much to do — and too much to think about — your sleep is likely to suffer. To help restore peace to your life, consider healthy ways to manage stress. Start with the basics, such as getting organized, setting priorities and dividing tasks. Give yourself permission to take a break when you need one. Share a good laugh with an old friend.

Nearly everyone has an occasional sleepless night — but if you often have trouble sleeping, contact your doctor. Identifying and treating any underlying causes can help you get the better sleep you deserve.

They wear the latest fashions with the most up-to-date accessories(配饰)Yet these are not girls in their teens or twenties but women in their sixties and seventiesA generation which would once only wear old-fashioned clothes is now favouring the same high street looks worn by those half their age

Professor Julia Twigg, a social policy expert, said, “Women over 75 are now shopping for clothes more frequently than they did when they were young in the 1960sIn the 1960s buying a coat for a woman was a serious matterIt was an expensive item that they would purchase only every three or four years — now you can pick one up at the supermarket whenever you wish toFashion is a lot cheaper and people get tired of things more quickly

Professor Twigg analysed family expenditure(支出) data and found that while the percentage of spending on clothes and shoes by women had stayed around the same — at 5 or 6 percent of spending — the amount of clothes bought had risen sharply

The professor said, “Clothes are now 70 percent cheaper than they were in the 1960s because of the huge expansion of production in the Far EastIn the 1960s Leeds was the heart of the British fashion industry and that was where most of the clothes came from, but now almost all of our clothes are sourced elsewhereEveryone is buying more clothes but in general we are not spending more money on them

She said, “When people see stars such as Judi Dench and Helen Mirren looking attractive and fashionable in their sixties, they want to follow themOlder women are much more aware of celebrities There’s also the boom in TV programmes showing people how they can change their look, and many of my older customers do yoga to stay in shape well in their fiftiesWhen I started my business a few years ago, my older customers tended to be very rich, but now they are what I would call ordinary womenMy own mother is 61 and she wears the latest fashions in a way she would never have done ten years ago

Cthey are in much better shape now   Dclothes are much cheaper than before

31Which is the best possible title of the passage?

AAge Is No Barrier for Fashion Fans   BThe More Fashionable, the Less Expensive

On the eve of our daughters’ weddings, I gave both of them what I considered to be excellent marital advice: never leave your husband unsupervised (无人监督的) with pruning shears (修枝剪).

If only I had taken my own advice. I recently let my guard down. Thirty-some years of marriage can do that to a woman. Give a man pruning shears and electric trimmers (电动修剪器) and he will give new meaning to “armed and dangerous.”

One day earlier this year, my husband said that the crab apple tree was dead.

“Why do you think it is dead?” I asked.

“Look at it. There’s not a leaf on it.”

“There’s not a leaf on anything. It’s March,” I said.

“It looked sick last fall and with this bitter winter we had, I’m convinced it’s dead.”

The truth is he’s never liked the crab apple. Sure, it has beautiful blooms in the spring, but then it gets a disease, the leaves curl, and it drops those little apples that sit on the driveway.

Each passing week he pronounced the tree dead. Eventually I began to believe him. Though he agreed it would be a regrettable loss, there was a twinkle in his eye. He armed himself a couple of weeks ago and began trimming. A branch here, a branch there, a small limb, then a large limb. I watched and then decided to check the wood on some of the branches closer to the trunk. I broke one off and saw green.

The crab apple was not dead. It just hadn’t had time to leaf out. The tree was now falling to one side, but it was not dead. I would have told him so, but he had moved on to a maple. Once the man starts, he can’t stop. One trim leads to another.

“Please, stop!” I called.

He smiled and nodded, but he couldn’t hear because he had started the hedge (树篱) trimmers and was getting ready to fix a line of hedges.

Zip (飕飕声), zip, zip.

“What do you think?” he shouted.

“It’s supposed to be a privacy hedge; now all that will be private are our ankles.”

He started the trimmers again. “Stop!” I called, “Come back!”

“Why?” he shouted.

“You’re in the neighbor’s yard.”

An old woman diverted ( 转移 ) attention from the book when I was sitting in my car. She walked slowly towards my parked car with a large shoulder bag.  She stopped and put a hand out to rest against the car. She gently closed her eyes, took a deep breath and wiped the sweat off her forehead. Was there a way I could do anything to help her? But I wondered if the lady noticed me sitting inside the car, she would feel embarrassed and walk away.

I stilled my body while my mind searched for answers. I turned my head towards my driver, wanting him to ask the lady if we could give her a ride. Because of my head movement, she noticed me and moved her hand away from the car. Her calm expression changed to a cautious one. I grabbed the water bottle next to me, smile, gently opened the door and offered the bottle to her. She looked at me hesitatingly, shook her head with downcast ( 低垂的 ) eyes and walked away.

I was so annoyed with myself. I should have been more careful not to move. However, she was back I opened the door and patted the seat next to me. She sat down, opened her bag and offered me a banana. I took it and offered her the water bottle again. She took it. I ate, she drank and we smiled. She rested for a couple of minutes.

Memo

To: All Staff

From: Jakie Mok, Secretary; Sports Development Committee

Date: May 20, 2010

A week ago, “Sports for Life” programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones.

Sports 1 : Basketball

We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.

Sports 2: Gym

We will be using St. Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has lots of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Ten

activities, skipping, baseball, dive, shoot, badminton, bowling, boxing, cycling, jogging, outdoor aerobics (有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.

Sports 3: Hiking

Hiking (远足) will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75/hr. Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

Sports 4: Swimming

The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (i. e. 2:45 pm to 3:45 pm). Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.

21. Which of following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Students selecting basketball had better register early.

B. Students participating in gym should arrive at 6:00 pm.

C. Hiking usually begins at 2:30 pm and lasts 2 hours.

D. Students having swimming suit can take up swimming.

22. It can be inferred from the passage that_________.

A. students taking part in basketball will walk to the courts.

B. every student can gain admission to one of the four sports.

C. hiking students can have a regular rest in the shade of trees.

D. students taking up the four sports should bring bottles of water.

23. It can be concluded that__________.

A. each sport will take only one hour.

B. students will be charged for the four sports.

C. all the sports will take place at Kowloon Peak.

D. teachers will accompany students on each sport.

24. The purpose of the memo is to ________.

A. attract students’ interest in the programme.

B. require the parents to select a sport for their child.

C. help the staff explain the programme to the parents.

D. remind teachers and lifeguards to be present on time.

On the banks of Tanzania’s Lake Eyasi lives the world’s last hunter-gatherer tribe (部落) — the Hadza. They don’t grow food, raise animals or build houses. Instead they live a life unchanged for more than ten thousand years.

Their world is one of complete freedom — something modern society can barely imagine and is unlikely to ever experience, let alone have the skills to stay alive. Text messages and phone calls don’t exist. Nor do cars and electricity. No jobs, timetables, and social structures. No laws, taxes and unbelievably, no money — the closest thing to currency is the trade for a pair of shorts with a neighboring tribe.

We spent our time with the Hadza hunting baboons (狒狒), a daily activity for the men. Their land is packed with sharp bushes, poisonous snakes and man-eating lions. But a successful hunting trip is the difference between eating or going hungry.

The Hadza diet consists mainly of honey, fruit and meat. Men often hunt in pairs to shoot animals with bows and arrows. The Hadza show us how to track animals, from baboons to snakes to lions. They are hugely skilled with their handmade bows and arrows — we have a go and barely get the arrow to go three feet in front of us.

The language of the Hadza is believed to be the oldest still-spoken language known to man. The Hadza don’t have conflict, and have no memory of starvation. Their population never reaches numbers that cannot be supported through hunting or gathering. They never get from their land more than they need.

Unlike modern-day office workers, the Hadza enjoy an extraordinary amount of free time. Their “work” — hunting for food — takes up around five hours of their day. They’ve been in such a state of peaceful existence for thousands of years.

8. We can learn from the text that the Hadza_______.

A. lead a very primitive life

B. live on traditional agriculture

C. have their own system of currency

D. show a lot of interest in new technology

9. Which of the following can describe the Hadza’s environment?

A. Stressful.                  B. Comfortable.

C. Exciting.                        D. Dangerous.

10. The relationship between the Hadza and nature_______.

A. is going wrong

B. is full of conflict

C. is in perfect harmony

D. is changing all the time

11. Why does the author come to visit the Hadza?

A. To study their native language.

B. To get to know their way of life.

C. To learn survival skills from them.

D. To persuade them to protect animals.

When it comes to parents bring up children, two great trends stand out.First, children are now praised to an unbelievable degree. As Dorothy Parker once joked,American children aren’t brought up;they are motivated.Children are constantly told how special they are.The second is that children are honed(磨砺)to an unimaginable degree. In general, parents spend much more time than in past generations on their children’s development.

These two great trends--greater praise and greater honing--combine in close ways.Parents shower their kids with affection, but it is intermingled with the desire to help their children achieve success.Parents are happy when their child studies hard, practices hard, wins first place, gets into a famous college.

The wolf of conditional love is hidden in these homes. The parents feel they love their children in all circumstances. But the children often think differently. They feel that childhood is a performance--on the athletic field,in school and beyond. The shadowy presence of conditional love products a fear, the fear that there is no completely safe love.

Meanwhile, children who are uncertain of theirs parent’s love develop a great hunger for it.This conditional love is like an acid that affects children’s criteria(标准)to make their own decisions about their own colleges, majors and careers. At key decision-points,they unconsciously imagine how their parents will react.

These children tell their parents those things that will bring praise and hide the parts of their lives that won’t.Studies suggest that children who receive conditional love often do better in the short run. They can be model students. But they suffer in the long run. They come to hate their parents. They are so influenced by fear that they become afraid of risk.

Parents today are less likely to demand obedience(顺从)with explicit(明确的)rules and lectures. But they are more likely to use love as a tool to exercise control. But parental love is supposed to ignore achievement. It’s meant to be an unconditional support a gift that can not be bought and cannot be earned.

32.According to Dorothy Parker,American children_______.

  A.need more concern

  B.grow better under pressure

  C.Have unimaginable potential

  D.Receive much praise and encouragement

33.What does the underline word”intermingled” in Paragraph2 mean?

  A.greeted   B.mixed   C.compared  D.separated

34.Some children can’t make their own decision probably because_______.

  A.they have too many options

B.they are lacking in parents’ advise

C.they are doubtful about parents’ love

D.they care too much about parents’ reaction

35.What’s the author’s opinion about parental love?

A.It doesn’t go to children with poor grades

B.It is meant to control children’s  behaviour

  C.It shouldn’t focus on children’s achievement

D.It works with strict rules and constant reminding.

We’ve just moved into a bigger house and there’s a lot to do. Let’s ______ it.

A. keep up with             B. do away with            C. get down to                     D. look forward to

Edmund Halley was an English scientist who lived over 200 years ago. He studied the 1111]observations of comets (彗星) which other scientists had made. The orbit(轨道)of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical problem. He could not figure it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems.

However, Halley had a friend named Isaac Newton, who was a brilliant mathematician. Newton thought he had already worked out that problem, but he could not find the papers on which he had done it. He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse(椭圆形).

Now Halley set to work. He figured out(解决,计算出)the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed by scientists. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years 1531, 1607, and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearance had been 75 to 76 years apart.

This seemed very strange to Halley. Three different comets followed the same orbit. The more Halley thought about it, the more he thought that there had not been three different comets as people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times. The comet had gone away and had come back again.

It was an astonishing idea! Halley felt certain to make a prediction(预言)of what would happen in the future. He decided that this would appear in the year 1758.
