Everyone has got two personalities—the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don't show your secret personality when you are awake because you can control your behaviorbut when you are asleepyour sleeping position shows the real you. In a normal nightof coursepeople frequently change their positions. The important position is the one that you go to sleep in.

If you go to sleep on your back you're a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by fashion or new ideas. You don't like to displease people. So you never express your real feelings. You're quite shy and you aren't quite sure of yourself.

If you sleep on your stomachyou are a rather secretive person. You worry a lot and you're always easily upset. You always stick to your own opinions or judgmentbut you don't raise your hope too much. You usually live for today not tomorrow. This means that you enjoy having a good time.

If you sleep curled upyou are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and so you're often defensive(防卫的). You're shy and you don't normally like meeting people. You prefer to be on your own. You're easily hurt.

If you sleep on your sideyou have usually got a wellbalanced personality. You know your strength and weakness. You're usually careful. You trust yourself. You sometimes feel anxiousbut you don't often get sad. You always say what you think even if it makes people rather angry.

Funds: You may not use your event to make money. You may not use your event to raise funds for charities or other organizations.

Admission: Based on approval from TED, you can charge an attendance fee for a TEDx event featuring live speakers. In order to charge an admission fee, you must first submit your proposed ticket price for approval from TED.

Attendance: Up to 100 individuals may attend your event. Only individuals who have attended an official TED conference may organize an event with more than 100 attendees. Having attended one or multiple TEDx events or TEDWomen does not qualify you to host an event for more than 100 guests.

Suppose you become a leader in an organization. It's very likely that you'll want to have volunteers to help with the organization's activities. To do so, it should help to understand why people undertake volunteer work and what keeps their interest in the work.

Let’s begin with the question of why people volunteer. Researchers have identified several factors that motivate people to get involved. For example, people volunteer to express personal values related to unselfishness, to expand their range of experiences, and to strengthen social relationships. If volunteer positions do not meet these needs, people may not wish to participate. To select volunteers, you may need to understand the motivations of the people you wish to attract.

People also volunteer because they are required to do so. To increase levels of community service, some schools have launched compulsory volunteer programs. Unfortunately, these programs can shift people's wish of participation from an internal factor (e. g. , “I volunteer because it's important to me”) to an external factor ( e. g. ,“I volunteer because I'm required to do so”). When that happens, people become less likely to volunteer in the future. People must be sensitive to this possibility when they make volunteer activities a must.

Once people begin to volunteer, what leads them to remain in their positions over time? To answer this question, researchers have conducted follow-up studies in which they track volunteers over time. For instance, one study followed 238 volunteers in Florida over a year. One of the most important factors that influenced their satisfaction as volunteers was the amount of suffering they experienced in their volunteer positions. Although this result may not surprise you, it leads to important practical advice. The researchers note that attention should be given to “training methods that would prepare volunteers for troublesome situations or provide them with strategies for coping with the problem they do experience”.

Another study of 302 volunteers at hospitals in Chicago focused on individual differences in the degree to which people view “volunteer” as an important social role. It was assumed that those people for whom the role of volunteer was most part of their personal identity would also be most likely to continue volunteer work. Participants indicated the degree to which the social role mattered by responding to statements such as “Volunteering in Hospital is an important part of who I am. ” Consistent with the researchers’ expectations, they found a positive correlation (正相关) between the strength of role identity and the length of time people continued to volunteer. These results, once again, lead to concrete advice: “Once an individual begins volunteering, continued efforts might focus on developing a volunteer role identity... Items like T-shirts that allow volunteers to be recognized publicly for their contributions can help strengthen role identity”.

28People volunteer mainly out of       .

Security—for the information on your smartphone, as well as for the phone itself is a hot topic these daysThe truth is that you’re packing a lot of sensitive information on your phone, and you should keep it safe

When it comes to physical security, iPhone users would do well to download Find My iPhone, a free app from Apple that allows you to visit a website and see your (lost, stolen or misplaced) phone on the mapYou can then sound an alarm, send a message that will pop up on its screen, lock the phone or erase all your data

Android does not have an exact equivalent(等价物), but there are plenty of alternativesA free app called Lookout offers the find my  phone featureThe paid version allows you to wipe the data from your phone remotely

Then there is your coffee shop’s WiFi networkAnyone with minimal technical expert skill can snoop on(窥视) people using shared wireless networks, harvesting passwords and other personal dataLookout’s apps will caution you when you’ve logged on to an insecure network, but cannot protect you once you’re there

In order to protect yourself on such networks, you can use a virtual private network, or VPNThis turns all your activity into nonsense to anyone trying to read along with you from across the StarbucksIt also keeps websites from tracking you and, if you’re traveling, allows you to get access to sites that may be blocked in other countries

If you have an iPhone, the simplest VPNapp is probably Hotspot Shield, whose distinguishing feature is said to be that it automatically kicks in each time you start browsing (浏览), as opposed to other VPNapps that require you to start them up manually(手动)This matters, because even if you decide you want a VPNapp, you want to spend approximately zero time thinking about itFor the most part, that was true of Hotspot Shield, though occasionally it took a while to connect or temporarily lost connection without warningI found myself having to turn the app on and off sometimes, which involved setting my phone constantly

If even reading about the setting on your phone drives you crazy, then it is probably best to stay away from a VPNappBut if you’re the type who can’t resist checking your bank balance from your comer bar, the hassle (麻烦) may be preferable to the risk

33Which of the following can warn you against the insecure network?

AAndroid

BVPN

CLookout

DFind My iPhone

34By using VPN, users can ________

Afind their lost phone on the Internet

Bremove all the data form the phone remotely

Ccheck the bank balance now and then

Dsave their browsing from being tracked

35The underlined word “that” in Para6 refers to the fact that _________

Aa VPNapp kicks in automatically

Bthe users starts VPNapps manually

Cthe app take a while to connect

Dusers spend no time thinking about it

Last night’s meteor (流星) shower left many people in the community dissatisfied and demanding answers. According to Gabe Rothschild, Emerald Valley’s mayor, people gathered in the suburbs of the city, carrying heavy telescopes, expecting to watch the brightly burning meteors passing through the sky. What they found instead was a sky so brightened by the city’s lights that it darkened the light of the meteors passing overhead.

“My family was so frustrated,” admitted town resident Duane Cosby, “We wanted to make this an unforgettable family outing, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment.”

Astronomers---scientists who study stars and planets----have been complaining about this problem for decades. They say that light pollution prevents them from seeing objects in the sky that they could see quite easily in the past. They call on people and the government to take measures to fight against it.

There is yet a population besides professional and amateur star observers that suffers even more from light pollution. This population consists of birds, bats frogs, snakes, etc. For example, outdoor lighting severely affects migrating (迁徙的) birds. According to the International Dark-Sky Association, “100 million birds a year throughout North America die in crashes with lighted buildings and towers.”

Countless more animals casualties伤亡result from the use of artificial lighting. Clearly, people enjoy the benefits of lighting their evenings, but some scientists think it can be harmful for humans, too. They worry that exposure to light while sleeping can increase person’s chances of getting cancer.

Emerald Valley is only one community that is becoming aware of the negative effects of light pollution. For years, Flagstaff, Arizona, has enforced lighting regulations in its city in order to assist astronomers at the Lowell Observatory. Similar efforts have been made worldwide, and a movement is underway to remind us to turn off lights when we are not using them, so that other creatures can share the night.

11It happened last night that________.

A. the city light show attracted many people

B. the meteors flew past before being noticed

C. the city’s lights affected the meteor watching

D. the meteor watching ended up a social outing

12What is the author concerned about according to Paragraph 4?

A. Birds may take other migration paths.

B. Animals’ survival is threatened by outdoor lighting.

C. Varieties of animals will become sharply reduced.

D. Animals’ living habits may change suddenly.

13Lighting regulations in Flagstaff, Arizona are put into effect to________.

A. lessen the chance of getting cancer

B. enable all creatures to live in harmony

C. ensure citizens a good sleep at night

D. create an ideal observation condition

14What message does the author most want to give us?

A. Human activities should be environmentally friendly.

B. Great efforts should be made to save energy.

C. Saving wildlife is saving ourselves.

D. New equipment should be introduced for space study.

Nick was not the kind of boy I had expected to spend my summer with. I was hoping to have some   36   the summer before my busy senior year, but my mother asked me to do her a   37  . One of her colleagues needed a full-time   38  . “You planned to volunteer at the local hospital, why not volunteer to   39   Nick instead?” Then she told me that this six-year-old boy was not a   40   child.

Nick was a lovely little boy who suffered from many disorders. Normal day-care centers would not   41   him. As a baby, he had serious ear infections which left him with equilibrium (平衡) problems.

He couldn’t   42   or run properly. I was   43   if I was to take the job when my mother   44  , “Don’t you want to be a nurse in the future? I doubt if you even have the   45  .”

Then I told her I was   46   for the job.

The day started at 7:00 a.m. Nick was my wake-up call! With so much energy and very little   47  , he was quite a mix.

At the park, when he saw all the other children play on the jungle gym and swings, the boy’s face   48   up — How he wished he belonged to the group of his age! You would think it would be   49   to get a child to go down a slide. Believe me, it wasn’t! It took time, a lot of time. But with patience and support, Nick took one step up the slide each day. We worked together to face his   50   and gradually he got closer to taking the slide of his life.

Halfway through the summer, he   51   it to the top of the slide. With my arms holding him tightly, we flew down the slide! I waited for his   52  . After realizing that he was safe and sound, he gave me a big   53   and asked, “May I go down again, alone?”

I had never been happier in my life when I saw this little child climb the ladder and enjoy what other children   54   for granted.

This   55   child taught me that being a nurse means respect, kindness and patience.

   Saturday, March 24th

We have arrived in the hot, wet city of Bangkok. This is our first trip to

Thailand(泰国). All the different smells make us want to try the food. We are

going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is

cheap, and very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in

the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the North.

  Tuesday, March 27th

Bangkok is wonderful and surprising! The places are interesting. We visited

the famous market which was on water, and saw a lot of fruits and vegetables.

Everything is so colorful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later

today we will leave for Chiang Mai. We will take the train north, stay in

Chiang Mai for two days, and then catch a bus to Chiang Rai.

  Friday, March 30th

Our trip to Chiang Rai was long and boring. We visited a small village in

the mountains. The village people here love the quiet life-no computers or

phones. They are the kindest people I have ever met. They always smile and say

"hello". Kathy and I can only speak a few words of Thai, so smiling is the best

way to show our kindness. I feel good here and hope to be able to come back

next year.

We thought we had it alla beautiful house, three healthy children and one more on the way, two cars ---- and we loved it. We spent money like it was going out of style. Then, the market turned and my husbands job as a bigwig(大人物) at a construction company was gone. The company was closing down for ever.

We both started looking for jobs right away, but there werent any to be found. With each passing day our panic increased and we continued to work together in order to pull our family through. The more we pulled together, the closer we got. I felt feelings of great love for my husband that I hadnt felt in years.

Thats why it was so hard for me to watch him blame himself for our present situation. I knew that he had no control over the economy, however, he constantly degraded (降低…身份)himself and his spirit sunk lower with each unkind comment. I continually asked him to stop, but he seemed to want to punish himself for not having a job.

Finally one afternoon I pulled him aside and said, We have four healthy children. Thats whats important. That makes you a rich man.

But what if we lose the house? Theyll hate meyoull hate me. he replied.

I smiled at him and put my hands on both sides of his face to make him look me in the eye.

If we live in a cardboard box on the empty place across the street I will be happyas long as I have you. I smiled again as I realized that I wasnt saying it. Somehow, in all the struggling together I had found that deep love for him that I had on the day we said I do.

I could see relief wash through him as his shoulders and neck relaxed and the tension left his body. He held me close and we were able to talk and plan and dream together in a way that we hadnt in quite some time.

We are still struggling financially, but I consider us well-off because we have something that money cant buy and no one can take away from us.
