Questions you should ask yourself when you fail
The more new things we try the more failure we are likely to have.. Experiencing failure can be a learning experience and an opportunity for a fresh start. A good way to begin this process is by asking yourself some tough questions.
⑴What can I learn from this?
Take responsibility for what went wrong. OK, so it was not all your fault—but some of it was. Successful people don't make excuses or blame others. So you should look at the experience objectively(客观地).
⑵Do I need to acquire or improve some skills?
Did the problem reveal some lack of skill on your part? How could you learn or improve those skills? Perhaps there are books or courses or people you could turn to.
⑶Who can I learn from?
Is there someone to whom you can turn for advice? Did a boss, colleague or friend see what happened? . Most people do not ask for help because they believe it to be a sign of weakness rather than strength. It's not. It shows that you are ready to learn and change.
⑷What will I do next?
Now draw up an action plan. Will you try something similar or something different? Revisit your goals. Failure doesn't mean you have to give up; maybe you just need to change it in another way.
A. You can now reset your sights on your destination and plan a new course. B. Make them step stones to future success. C. They take responsibility for the failure. D. In fact the only way to avoid failure is to do nothing new. E. The important thing is how we deal with failure. F. Make a self-development plan to acquire the skills and experience you need. G. If they are constructive and supportive then ask them for some feedback (反馈) and guidance. |
History is a record of what has happened in the past. The really fascinating thing is that much of history has been repeated time and again. It allows us to learn from the past, both the mistakes and the successes.
One of the benefits of history is reading how other people have overcome tremendous challenges in their life. These challenges, although particular to a person, or to a certain time in the past, or occurring in a different country or culture, all convey the same thing.
He encountered many failures while on the road to finally inventing the light bulb. He could be held out as an example of a person who never gave up. However, he did not let those failures stop him. He had a dream and he just kept trying different things until he did reach success.
Or, consider the story of Abraham Lincoln who managed to become President of the United States even though he suffered many setbacks and personal losses. Most of us only realise his success. His life was not easy. His story motivates us to keep moving forward no matter what obstacles we have in life.
A. History has a lot of influence on us.
B. Take the story of Thomas Edison for example.
C. History has some very unique qualities.
D. I am sure he was discouraged by his many failures.
E. They convey wisdom in their short stories of perseverance.
F. Few of us know about the many challenges he had to overcome.
G. Only those with courage to face challenges can realise their dreams.
Last Sunday, I sat with Tony, my college classmate, in a well-known coffee shop in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As we1our coffee, two men entered and sat on an empty table beside us.
They2the waiter and ordered three cups of 3, two on the table and one on the wall. We heard this order with great4and observed that they were served with two cups of coffee 5they paid for three. As soon as they6, the waiter pasted (粘贴) a piece of paper on the wall saying A Cup of Coffee.
It 7that the matter was normal at this place. However, it was something8for Tony and me. Since we had nothing to do with the matter, we 9our coffee, paid the bill and left.
After a few days, we again had a10to go to this coffee shop. While we were enjoying our coffee, a man entered. The way this man was dressed did not 11the standard nor the atmosphere of this coffee shop. Poverty was12from the looks on his face. As he13himself, he looked at the14and said, “One cup of coffee from the wall.” The waiter served coffee to this man with15, politeness and warmth.
After a few minutes, the man finished his coffee and left16paying. We were amazed to watch all this when the waiter 17a piece of paper from the wall and18it in the dustbin.
Now it was no 19for us because the matter was very clear. Although the man didn't know about the one who was giving this cup of coffee to him, he would have a better understanding of the wall which had a great role between the 20and receiver.

Why is setting goals important? Instead of just letting life happen to you, goals allow you to make your life happen. Successful people imagine how their life should be and set lots of goals.
By setting goals you are taking control of your life. It's like having a map to show you where you want to go. Think of it this way. There are two drivers. One has a destination in mind which can be found on a map. She can drive straight there surely without any wasted time of wrong turns. She starts off at the same time from the same place as the first driver, but she drives aimlessly around, never getting anywhere, just using up gas. Which driver do you want to be?
Winners in life set goals and follow them through. They decide what they want in life and then get there by making plans and setting goals. Goals aren't difficult to set and they aren't difficult to reach.
You are the one who must decide what to achieve and in what direction to aim your life.
Research tells us that when we write a goal down we are more likely to achieve it. Like a contract(合同) with yourself, they are harder to neglect or forget. Also when you write your goals in a particular way, you are able to make yourself continuously aware of situations that will bring you nearer to your goal.
A.Because everybody should have a goal in his mind. B.Unsuccessful people usually just let life happen by accident. C.The other driver has no goal, or destination or map. D.It's difficult for a driver to reach his destination without a map. E.It's up to you to find out what your goals really are. F.Because goals can help you do, be, and experience everything you want in life. G.Written goals can be reviewed regularly, and have more power. |

A couple of days ago, as the test results came out, my son and a group of his 13-year-old friends piled into the back seat of my car, ready for the last-day-of-school party at McDonald's. “Jack got a laptop for getting straight A's, and Laurie got a cell-phone,” one boy said. “Oh, yeah, and Sarah got an iPad, and she's only in third grade,” said another. “And how about Brian? He got $10 for each A.”
I suddenly became concerned. These payoffs might get parents through grammar school, but what about high school and beyond? What would be left after the electric guitar, the cell-phone, and the DVD player?
I saw the road ahead:As the homework load increased, my income would decrease.I saw my comfortable lifestyle disappear before my eyes — no more of those $5 bags of already-peeled organic carrots. No more organic anything!
I started to feel surprised and nervous. Would every goal achieved by my two children fetch a reward? A high grade point average? A good class ranking? Would sports achievements be included in this reward system: soccer goals, touchdowns? What about the orchestra? Would first chair pay more than second? I'd be penniless by eighth-grade graduation.
“We never paid anything for good grades,” said my neighbor across the street, whose son was recently accepted at MIT. “He just did it on his own. Maybe once in a while we went out for pizza, but that's about it.”
Don't you just hate that? We're all running around looking for the MP3 player with the most updates, and she's spending a few dollars on pizza. She gets motivation; we get negotiation. And what about the primary grades? What do these students get? “When the teacher asked if anyone got rewards for good grades, everyone in my class raised their hands and said they got ice cream cones ,” said one third-grader.
It sounds like something is wrong with the car's engineer. ,we'd better take it to the garage immediately.
